Then contact Pioneer Insulation for a free quote. A three bedroom semi-detached house will cost around £15,000 to completely insulate. The government is so keen for people in older properties to have this external wall insulation fitted that they will refund up to a third of the cost of the work, whatever your income. This means that the cost to you will be only around £10,000. The government has already offered the Green Deal package twice before, with the funding snapped up very quickly both times. They have now offered further funds from the 1st February 2015. If you want to take advantage of this offer, act quickly and register your interest with us now. As an approved Green Deal installer, you can save yourself around £900 by coming straight to us, rather than going through other advice sites that will just pass you on and charge a hefty introduction fee. A testimonial from a recent customer. “The house looks great and it feels so much warmer. We used to have black mould in one of the rooms. Now that the insulation has been on for a few weeks, the wall has dried and the mould has disappeared completely. Amazing.” (Mrs. Anna B, Thames Ditton).

CROSSWORD WHAT’S COOKING? GARDENING MATTERS BENTLEY CAR REVIEW Ted Macauley tells us all about the Bentley Continental GTC
From the Editor
It’s great to be back with you after our winter break! I hope you all did a better job than I did of avoiding all the germs which seemed to be abundant in Bookham this year. My coughing has only just subsided, and as a result, drastic action needed to be taken. I treated myself to a New Year present in the form of a Nutri Bullet. Have you heard of them? They seem to be all the rage in the health industry and certainly make the preparation of your own fresh fruit and vegetable juices very easy indeed. My intention: to boost my immune system and generally become healthier. So far, apple, carrot and fresh ginger are featuring, with a touch of spinach and even goji berries too. I highly recommend it, my five-a-day has turned into eight or nine a day without even noticing it. Anyway, enough free promotion for Nutri Bullet for now! But if you have any good combinations you think I might like, please do email them over. We might just have to include a ‘Juice of the Month’ from now on! As well as looking after ourselves on the inside, it’s also very good to treat our outsides. Our feature writer, Cecelia John, did just that when she visited local business Skin Talk, where she enjoyed a very nice treatment, by all accounts. See pages 10/11 to find out more. Please form an orderly queue! Romantic times ahead with Valentine’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, so I suggest that if you intend to celebrate, it may be an idea to book your table nice and early to avoid disappointment! And not long after that it will be Pancake Day on Tuesday 17th so, despite the winter weather, there is still lots to look forward to! Warmest regards

PLANNING IN 2015 I was recently reminded of a common quotation often used to support the need for planning: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there...”, Usually ascribed to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the first interesting point to note is that this quote is taken from a text in 1865 – 150 years ago. Secondly, it doesn’t actually appear in the novel at all. The saying paraphrases a dialogue between Alice and the Cheshire Cat. “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat. “I don’t much care where...” said Alice. “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat. “...so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation. “Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.” In fairness, not many investors would admit to not caring WHERE their finances end up, but in reality, if the financial direction is not directly linked to a financial goal, isn’t that the same thing? The fact that this quote is still relevant today just shows that there is little truly new in the world! However, if we accept the need to plan, we also need to recognise that few people have the luxury of being able to define exact financial goals. I know people actually IN retirement who can’t precisely say how much money they need for the coming year. So what hope for people ten years or more younger, still paying mortgages or
ALISTAIR MANN FPFS
with dependents? But we can still plan, even if we can’t be exact. For instance, we wear sunscreen, but don’t exactly measure how much we put on, we’re not precise about how often. We can’t even estimate the sun’s strength with much accuracy on any given day. But the wise amongst us use sunscreen, just in case. In fact, most of our planning in life is done by estimation, rather than with absolute detail. Buying a new house, we may know some details [‘at least x bedrooms’ or ‘within xx postcode’] but are deliberately vague about finer points of precision – to narrow down the options and enable ‘last minute’ decisions or acceptable compromise. So, in broad terms, what do we actually want to do with our life, within our lifetime? In 2015, if you haven’t tried this before, I invite you to have a go at listing the things you want to do before you are, say, 80, then alongside each, put a cost and a ‘best before’ date. That list is the basis of a true plan for living, around which we can create a financial plan. The people who tend to be disappointed are not those who set out with a plan but only achieve some of it. Real disappointment is in the lives of those who don’t plan, and then look back on the things they could have done, but didn’t. Without a plan, there is equal danger and disappointment from too much life at the end of your money, or too much money at the end of your life. But even if you don’t want to plan, as Chicago journalist Mary Schmich, said in 1997 ‘Trust me on the sunscreen...’.

Skin Talk
O
n a beautiful autumn day, I arrived at Skin Talk in Cobham to meet Toni, an ITEC trained skin therapist and a member of the Guild of Beauty Therapists, who has achieved Dermalogica Expert Status. She gained her ITEC qualification in Beauty in South Africa and has been in Britain since 2006. Her main interest is skin health: she’s passionate about skin and treating it. 9 out of 10 people who come to see her do so because of skin problems and ageing, including acne and pigmentation, and the bulk of Toni’s work is facials. I’d come to experience one, using Dermalogica products, to which she’s totally loyal. She told me that it’s really important to follow a correct and
tailored beauty regime at home and then just go to the salon for top-ups: soooo, the main work’s done by you. She doesn’t believe in making the process expensive, but instead wants it to be affordable. A very refreshing attitude! Having stated that ageing skin is my main concern, I lay down on Toni’s supercomfortable couch and she applied a pre-cleanser to lift any residual products/ pollutants/sebum so that my skin would accept a cleanser. After cleaning, she applied an exfoliant to slough away dead cells, brighten my skin and even out pigmentation/ skin tone. This felt lovely, not at all gritty like some exfoliating creams, and she used gentle steam to speed up its absorption. All these
things she removed with a softly-fragranced botanical mixer, using two soft sponges which she gave me to keep. Toni then used magnifying goggles to inspect my skin close up, reporting that there was a little pigmentation - probably because I’m a gardener by trade and therefore outdoors a great deal – and some fine lines, but that my skin wasn’t too dehydrated, which was pleasing to hear. She decided upon the multi-vitamin power recovery masque to increase hydration and boost suppleness, with an oatmeal masque on the T-bar of my face to help with the more sensitive side of my skin, also ideal for any sun or wind burn and therefore perfect for me. While these were drying, she massaged my hands and arms. All these products smelt divine, and by now, I was very relaxed! After removal of the masque, I enjoyed a face and neck pressure point massage before she applied the multi-active toner, containing gentle Balm Mint and Aloe Vera which cools, softens and hydrates the skin. Finally, the
gentle skin-smoothing cream was applied to smooth out fine lines, improve skin texture and hydrate, followed by a primer, which was almost like a foundation and helped to smooth away fine lines. This contains a SPF of 30 and can be mixed in with your moisturiser. I also experienced the multivitamin power firm eye cream, which helps repair the signs of ageing and increases skin elasticity and firmness. By this time, I was so zen that I was falling asleep! Toni is a very warm and welcoming person who really loves beauty. She always offers incentives on the products, such as a free treatment with a purchase, or 15% off. She’s also now offering her clients the BioSurface peel, which takes skin health to a new depth, combatting fine lines and pigmentation. Go and visit, you won’t regret it! Thank you so much for your welcome and enthusiasm, Toni. I had a delightful morning with you, and would love to come again some time. Cecelia John

COBHAM HERITAGE
NEW DAFFODIL DISPLAY FOR THE LEG O’MUTTON Local school children dig deep
B
uilding upon the success of the daffodil bulb planting project at Riverhill last year, the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust has again joined forces with Elmbridge Borough Council’s Leisure and Cultural Services team and three local schools to continue the project. Around 40 children and their families made short work of planting 1,500 daffodil bulbs on the Leg O’Mutton field in Cobham last Saturday morning. The bulbs were planted around the bases of the oak trees which run through the middle of the field. Volunteers from The Royal Kent School, St Matthew’s School and St Andrew’s School each planted their own stretch of trees with narcissus Tete-a-Tete bulbs, a dwarf variety of daffodils which flowers in early spring. Lynne Randell, Schools Liaison Coordinator for the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust, said
“After all their hard work 12 months ago, it was very rewarding for the children to see the wonderful display of daffodils at Riverhill last spring. The schools were keen to continue working with us and it was pleasing to see lots of new, eager young faces wanting to get involved. Through initiatives such as this, it is our aim to inspire a whole new generation of conservationists by giving them pride in their local surroundings.” Laura Richardson, of Elmbridge Borough Council’s Leisure and Cultural Services, said “The newly re-planted avenue of oak trees on the Leg O’Mutton field is an ideal location for the bulbs. It is a continuation of the three way project between ourselves, the Trust and Waitrose, who donated the trees to the community to commemorate 75 years of being part of the John Lewis partnership. The daffodils will make a valuable contribution to improving the landscape and environment.”

WHAT’S COOKING?
Perfect But termilk Pancakes W I T H
C H O C O L A T E
For the chocolate sauce: • 100ml essential Waitrose Double Cream • 1 Cooks’ Ingredients Chipotle Chilli, roughly chopped • 200g Divine Fairtrade 70% Dark Chocolate For the pancakes: • 150g essential Waitrose Plain Flour • Pinch of table salt • 25g golden caster sugar • 4 essential Waitrose Free Range Eggs • 100ml whole milk & 100ml buttermilk • 40g essential Waitrose Dairy Butter • 4 tbsp rapeseed or sunflower oil • Duchy Originals from Waitrose Organic Vanilla Ice Cream, to serve
METHOD To make the sauce, gently warm the cream & chilli in a pan, then leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Break the chocolate into a bowl & place on top of a pan of simmering water, making sure the base doesn’t touch the water, and allow to melt slowly while stirring. Strain the warmed cream into the melted chocolate
and stir. Discard the chilli. Keep the sauce warm while you make the pancakes. Sift the flour into a large bowl & add the salt & half the sugar. In a separate dish, crack 2 eggs into the milk. Separate the remaining 2 eggs & add the yolks to the milk. Add the buttermilk to the milk & eggs & whisk together. Slowly pour into the flour, whisking gently but being careful not to overmix. In a separate bowl, add the remaining sugar to the egg whites, whisk until light and fluffy, then fold into the batter mixture in 2 stages. Heat a little butter & oil in a non-stick pan. Depending on the size of your pan, drop up to 5 large tablespoons of the pancake mix into it & fry each pancake for 40 seconds until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip over & fry for a further 40 seconds, then remove. Repeat in batches with the rest of the batter to make 18-24 pancakes. Divide the pancakes between 6 plates & top each with a scoop of ice cream & a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Serve swiftly. GARDENING MATTERS
O
h thank goodness, Christmas is over for another year. I am soooo full, yuck, no-one mention turkey or pudding for at least another 12 months. So, here we go again with the meaning of plant names, this month with prefixes and what they signify. Stay with me here…..
Most specific names are made up of simple words, for example alba, meaning ‘white’. They stand alone next to the actual name of the plant, as in Cornus alba, the white dogwood. But there is also a group of compound words, comprising two parts, a prefix and another bit. Sometimes, the prefix is a number, plus a part of the plant. This is quite common: triphyllum, for example, is tri, meaning ‘three’ and phyllum, meaning ‘leaf ’, so ‘three-leaved’, as in Colchicum triphyllum, the three-leaved colchicum. Or less well-known, Elatine hexandra, a waterwort with six stamens, hex in Greek meaning ‘six’ and andra in Latin, meaning ‘having a stamen’. Other examples of number prefixes are uni (one-…..), bi/bis, (two…..), quadri (four-…..) and poly (‘many’, as in Lupinus polyphyllus, a lupin with many leaves). Most prefixes are either adjectives or adverbs indicating size or position. There is macro, meaning ‘large’ or ‘long’, seen in Aster macrophyllus, the large-leaved aster - also magnus and grandis, as in Magnolia grandiflora, the large flowered magnolia - and parvi, meaning ‘small’, where Cyclamen parviflorum is the small-flowered cyclamen. If you’re planning your garden and it is either huge or weeny, it’s handy to
know these, so that the plants are in proportion to the size of the garden. Position is also seen frequently: trans-, or ‘across’ in Latin means exactly that in Cotoneaster transcaucasicus – a cotoneaster which comes from right across the Caucasian mountains, hailing from Armenia/ Iran/Turkey. There is also super - ‘above’- and sub - ‘below’, as in subalpinus, ‘below alpine levels’, but while meaning ‘below’, ‘sub’ also means ‘partially/nearly/somewhat’: for example, subcordata means ‘slightly heart-shaped’ as in Prunus subcordata, a plum native to California, and subhirsutum means ‘somewhat hairy’, as in Allium subhirsutum, the hairy garlic. Finally, as we saw last month, sometimes the prefix is another plant: salix, meaning ‘willow’, is used in the name Pyrus salicifolia, a weeping pear, which has leaves like a weeping willow; hedera, or ‘ivy’, gives us Cyclamen hederifolium, the ivy-leaved cyclamen; laurus, an easier one to work out if you don’t know Latin, produces laurifolius, or ‘laurel-leaved’, seen in Cistus laurifolius, the laurel-leaved rock rose. Could it possibly be suffixes next time? Hmmmmmm? In the meantime, a very Happy New Year to everyone.

CAR REVIEW
BENTLEY When you can afford to buy a legend of a luxury car for less than a week’s wages, & still have plenty change for the petrol, the temptation to indulge must be irresistible. Well, if you are a Premiership footballer, that is. And a millionaire to boot, as so many of them are nowadays. My view is evidenced by the parade of the Bentley Boys, otherwise known as the firstteamers, who pass by my house most mornings on their way to the Chelsea training ground at Stoke d’Abernon. They left me curious to discover what all the fuss is about over the daily transport favoured by the privileged, & a trusting dear friend let me borrow his Continental GTC to revel ohtoo-briefly among the elite. Now I fully appreciate what is meant by the wow factor & how a status-symbol car can excite your pleasure buzz zone beyond belief. Parking it outside a restaurant or hotel, for instance, triggers an embarrassing rush of attendants, but sparks a dangerous sensation of self-regard, too. Coping with that, & the intensity of stares,
glares & outright jealousy, becomes part of the pride of driving the ultimate in luxury on four wheels. Little wonder the £250,000 -a-week soccer heroes choose to commute from their £5m mansions in a hand-crafted motor definitely fit for purpose, if being seen to be a megastar is a priority. And it usually is with them. My trusting friend’s on-loan GTC was sheer, eye-catching beauty on the move, with a palatial interior of wood & luxurious leather & just about every touch-button gizmo, dial & read-out you could possibly desire. Despite its 2.5-tonne kerbweight, it drives & corners with perfect behaviour What isn’t there you can specify and Bentley will include it. At an extra cost, of course. With a parent company lsuch as
Audi, one should expect a level of reliability second to none &, my friend assures me that this is exactly the situation. He should know: he’s on his third Bentley. This one, he reckons, & I can’t argue, is the finest so far from the car’s up-north facility at Crewe in Cheshire. Demand is so high that the residuals should be copper-bottomed. But if you are money-bags who can afford it, who worries anyway? It may sound churlish, faced with such perfection, but I was a wee bit disappointed that the wind rush was so noisily invasive when the roof was up. And while there is plenty of space up front, the leg-room in the back is relatively sparse. As panache goes, the exquisitelycrafted, four-wheel drive chassis Bentley - fast, refined & as capable as can be - is personification proof positive. I was never more reluctant to hand back a car, but thankful I could without a scratch. And I never saw an owner so relieved to have his pride & joy returned in one immaculate piece.. Specification: The Continental GTC. Engine V8, BHP 500. Zero60mph 4.7 seconds. Top Speed 187 mph. Mpg 25.9. Price: £143.915. Don’t bother to haggle...

IS YOUR PRINTER G E T T I N G YO U D O W N ?
We hear frequently of users’ dissatisfaction with their printers, due to a number of common gripes, such as: they are too costly to run, too slow, don’t hold enough paper, are too fiddly, aren’t wireless.... the list goes on. Generally, there’s no such thing as a bad printer, but rather, one that doesn’t match your needs. With combined wireless printer/copier/scanners starting at £55.00, there is a massive array of choice at extremely good value. To achieve the best value from your purchase, ensure the printer has 4 or 6 (for true photo quality) separate ink cartridges. This enables you to replace the individual cartridges when they run out, rather than replacing a two-thirds full cartridge. The cost of the consumables is a major factor when selecting the best machine for you. The lower priced printers generally have smaller capacity ink cartridges, therefore greater running costs. If you are replacing your inks more than once a month, you probably have the wrong printer and are paying too much to run the printer. By way of an example, we have an Epson printer/copier/scanner for £55.00; the replacement black cartridge costing £9.00 will provide a page yield of 175 pages, therefore the cost is 5.1 pence per page. At the other end of the scale, we have an A3 Epson printer/copier/scanner for £200.00 (on special currently, down from £290.00); the replacement black cartridges cost £34.00 which will provide a page yield of 2,200 pages, therefore the cost is 0.64 pence per page. All information regarding cartridge yields was taken from Epson’s website on www.epson.eu/pageyield ....and yes, there is a standard European printed page!

George, the quiet Beatle, released his self-titled album in ’79 and Michael Jackson, the greatest song and dance man the world had known, was getting ready to release his ‘Off The Wall’ LP, a major breakthrough, which would go on to become one of the most influential recordings ever. It provided a glimpse of the brand new direction that funk and soul music would take, with Michael Jackson as the standard bearer, with hits such as ‘Rock With You’, ‘Off The Wall’ and ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’. The album ‘George Harrison’ was recorded in Hawaii at a time when he married Olivia, became a father for the first time and was also a regular visitor to the F1 paddock when not in the recording studio. It was a time of great contentment for the former Beatle and it shows in tracks such as ‘Blow Away’ and ‘Love Comes to Everyone. I recall the atmosphere being friendly and fun, and the picture brings back some very fond memories of my time at the BBC. A fantastic time then for me to have had the great privilege of interviewing two exceptional talents at the height of their creative powers.

INSPIRATION COACHING
A L L C H A N G E ! A re you comfortable with change? Do you thrive on new ideas, opportunities and possibilities? Or are you in the ‘better the devil you know’ camp?
Get in on the action Sometimes, change desperately needs to happen and we either ignore the signals or resist it. When things aren’t going the way we’d like them to, some of us shrug our shoulders and say ‘that’s life’; others rage inwardly and blame their partner/parent/child/ boss/neighbour. In both situations, we are making ourselves victims of the choices of others, powerless to choose for ourselves. Let’s face it, change is part of life. If you want to be happy with the changes in YOUR life, it helps to be part of the decision-making process and take charge of the change.
Get comfortable with change Some major changes are hard to make and most of us will resist changing until the pain of staying in the situation is greater than the pain we anticipate from leaving it. So Life has a way of turning up the volume on the pain until we finally decide to deal with it. The good news is that, at such times, we invariably grow as human beings and will be able to deal with other aspects of our life more resourcefully as a result. We become more resilient, a key life skill that enables us to recover quickly from difficulties.
‘But I’m OK - it’s my partner/boss/ neighbour who’s the problem.’ 44 Looklocal Magazine - February 2015
We can’t change anyone else, but if we change ourselves, our relationships will have to change too. Non-Violent Communication (NVC) is a great resource to help us take responsibility for our words, actions and impact on those around us. Sometimes we haven’t a clue where to start, sometimes we know what we need to do and don’t know how, and sometimes we just need someone to help us believe in ourselves enough to get out there and DO it.
So why not change, for a change?
Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC
PS – as you can see, I agree with Mark Twain’s comment: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”. If you’d like a hand making 2015 the year you change your life for the better, call or email me. A little inspiration can go a long way.. Coaching with Inspiration!

Community Garden crowdfunding campaign
making Cobham, healthier, happier and more resilient
You might have heard of our plans for a community garden in Cobham. We recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund part of the fence. We had 28 days to receive ÂŁ2500 in pledges or all monies would have been returned. Thankfully we managed to surpass our ÂŁ2500 target and raised ÂŁ2711!
We made a video about the garden which can still be viewed via our website (see link below). We encouraged the Cobham community to pledge for rewards, such as a knitted hat, a chutney making workshop or a foot massage. We also spoke to local radio stations such as Surrey Hills and Brooklands Radio. It was wonderful to see how interested people were in the garden and how willing they were to support a community project. We hope to start growing the garden very soon and will keep you up to date! Our next open meeting will take place on Thursday 19th of February 8-10pm in the Community Room, Sainsbury’s Local, 29-31 High Street, Cobham. If you’d like to join us, visit http://transitioncobham.org.uk for more information. search for Transition Cobham
