Happy New Year, Happy Valentine’s Day Happy Pancake Day Happy Leap Year too...
As I write this, the predicted overnight temperature is -4 degrees! So far this year, it’s been extremely mild, extremely wet and now extremely cold and we’re only a few weeks in. Good old British weather, it keeps us on our toes, I guess. We welcome a new Q & A feature, starting next month, from Bruce at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, so please do email in with your canine questions, see page 16 for details. I’m looking forward to reading this new feature over the coming months. Competition time again, and up for grabs is a delightful children’s storybook, ‘Cinnamon and the Bat People’, by Cookie Thomas (no relation!) This lovely story is aimed at the 9 years and above age range. We will announce the winners in the March magazine. Info within, good luck to all who enter. Tuesday 9th Feb is Pancake Day, so we have included a lovely Waitrose recipe to brighten up your day. Pancakes are always a favourite in my house and a wonderful breakfast option too. Everyone here enjoys cooking their own! In addition to all this, you’ll find our normal regular features inside, plus a whole selection of other bits and bobs. I hope you enjoy exploring our pages.

T
he New Victoria Hospital, Kingston is well on the way to completing the first phase of its exciting new £21m expansion project, with the external structure of its new north wing now complete. The development will enable the hospital to meet a growing demand for its services, as well as providing a complete update of its facilities. In just a few months’ time, in summer 2016, the hospital will open its doors to: • Four brand new state of the art operating theatres replacing the existing 3 theatres. • A brand new high dependency unit which will allow The New Victoria Hospital to admit cases of greater acuity. • A 14 bed day surgery unit, in addition to the existing 27 beds. • A new enlarged pathology laboratory with state of the art analyser. • A new pharmacy - following on from this, later in 2017, the hospital will have completed the second phase of the development, which will provide: • A new outpatient department with new waiting room
and reception area • 5 additional consulting rooms with ancillary services, bringing the total number of consulting rooms to 12 • A new enlarged imaging department to accommodate an expanding range of services and equipment. Graham Ball, The New Victoria Hospital’s chief executive, commented: “Of course, the most important attribute of our hospital has always been the expertise of our staff and the caring ambience that pervades throughout. When the redevelopment is complete, we will be as proud of the physical environment as we are of our patient care. The development will help us grow further and provide more state-of-the-art facilities for our patients and consultants.” The private, charity-owned hospital is one of the few remaining independent hospitals in the country and has provided an excellent level of service to the local community for almost sixty years. Today, it is frequently ranked by patients as one of the top private hospitals in London. The hospital’s main specialities include orthopaedic surgery, gynaecology, general surgery and gastroenterology.

CT CARS
YOUR FRIENDLY, LOCAL GARAGE
NO JOB TOO SMALL, OR TOO LARGE Ian Whitmore knows a thing or two about cars. With over 32 years’ experience in the trade, Ian has owned CT Cars, opposite Squires Garden Centre, for 25 years. Here, he explains why a visit to CT Cars gives you dealer-quality work at a fraction of the price. Specialising in VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda, Ian is somewhat baffled why owners of these cars should want to take them to a dealer for servicing and repairs. While the cost of parts is, understandably, the same, expert labour at CT Cars comes in at about half the cost of a dealer’s labour. At CT Cars you are guaranteed: • Same diagnostic equipment as dealers • Same technology and parts as dealers • Same expertise and knowledge as dealers • As specialists, any work carried out by us WILL TheYOUR small, local, GREAT NOT AFFECT WARRANTY.

A large community choir in Cobham is delighted to announce that it will be opening its doors to new members from January 2016. The ever-popular Elmbridge Ladies’ Choir has had a waiting list of ladies wishing to join since its formation in 2009. However, membership has been limited, due to rehearsal space constraints. The choir has been rehearsing in Cobham Village Hall, but with its current membership of around 80, space has been a little tight and the ladies will now be moving across the road to Cobham Centre for the Community. All ladies are invited to join the choir, whatever their level of experience or ability. ‘We are a non-audition choir and welcome anyone who

We are a hugely friendly and sociable bunch and promise a warm welcome!’ Elmbridge Ladies’ Choir rehearses every Thursday from 8.00pm until 10.00pm. With a large & varied repertoire of popular & contemporary songs, the choir forms part of Surrey Community Music Society, a charitable organisation founded 10yrs ago by Cliff van Tonder, which has raised in excess of £150,000 for charity. WE HAVE RETURNED, & LO, IT‘S 2016, SO A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR As it’s February and I’m assuming it’s remained mild (erm, no. Ed.), we’ll go straight to pruning. My favourite job, especially savaging yellow shrubs. Pruning includes drastic tree lopping/tidying/ snipping out new growth, and here are 5 good reasons to prune: • To remove dead/diseased/damaged material • To shape • To encourage a healthier shrub by creating an open centre for air to circulate • To remove unnecessary parts so that energy is concentrated where it’s needed and growth is stimulated, usually from the dormant, outward-facing bud nearest the cut • To control the quantity of fruit/ flower by reducing the number of buds, as with tomatoes, grapes or prize chrysanthemums The golden rule is… if in doubt, prune immediately after flowering so that new growth and a ripening process can occur before the next flowering’s due. Generally, prune lightly in autumn and harder in spring, although foliage plants should always be pruned in spring. Before pruning, sharpen your tools and sterilise with a flame or surgical spirit, and make a clean cut with no jagged edges. With light pruning, relatively little is removed - 1 in 3 of the branches for forsythia/weigela/lilac/philadelphus/ climbing&rambling roses. Light pruning also involves shaping shrubs, eg ceanothus, after flowering, where you’re not aiming to reduce it to within an inch of
its life, but rather, to make its shape more pleasing and less random. Simply cut back to a growing bud. To encourage a plant to grow taller, prune its sides, whereas to increase its width/density/thickness, prune its top. Simples. Hard pruning involves the removal of much of the growth. Some shrubs become so overgrown, unsightly and old that they need pruning to 6” from the ground. You’ll miss out on 1 or 2 years’ flowering, but you may save a shrub otherwise doomed for the bonfire. Beech/laurel/privet all respond well to hard pruning, as does rhododendron, but be sure to give the latter an ericaceous feed. Cut buddleia and lavatera down to 6”-9” each year, and cornus to 3”. This apparently harsh pruning maintains shape, vigour, health, and with cornus, colour. Afterwards, the plant will suffer from shock, so rake away all debris, aerate the soil with a fork, apply a feed - Growmore, fish/ blood/bonemeal/pelleted poultry manure - hoe in, and water well. Some plants, eg conifers/lavender/santolina, shouldn’t be cut back to the brown, just back to a growing shoot or they’ll die. This pruning can still be quite drastic, but just be sure to cut to a leaf or flower bud/shoot. Variegated plants will eventually begin reverting to their original one colour, but if you cut out the reversions, you’ll prevent it reverting completely. There. All that cutting is very therapeutic. And all the prunings can be used for cuttings. Yaaay, free plants. Nature is wonderful.

PEUGEOT A R R E V I E W
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW PEUGEOT 308 GTi HATCHBACK
Looks, as the old saying goes, can be deceptive. And that could not be more apposite an adage than when applied to Peugeot’s 308 GTi Hatchback, the freshly-arrived French baby, devoid of teething problems. Wow! C’est magnifique! It may not revel in eye-poppingly spectacular kerb-appeal but, cor blimey, it is a rewarding experience from the moment you ease your derrière onto its bum-hugger seats in this ever-so-comfy hatchback and give it some stick. The response, especially if you really go for it, is a breathtaker reminiscent of any robust two-seater sports car shaped and built for performance and agility. The 308, outwardly a car with a familyouting/school-run appearance, and not at all threatening or looking like an open invitation for roadside speed cameras or traffic cops, is a reversion to fine tradition for the Gallic car maker. Remember the rather excellent 205s of the 80s, the transport for yuppies who yearned for performance without having the lolly to pay for a sporty flyer? Well, this latest five-door, low-slung presentation is a motor of that level of earlier excellence, expertise and
excitement, a recovery of oooomph and zip, and a surefire fightback on the extensive hot-hatch battleground. If I am coming across as overenthusiastic or as a suspect fan or victim of the Peugeot publicity machine, I apologise, but nothing could be further from the truth. My assessment is based solidly on a week of open and honest admiration for a car that gave me back all I asked of it and more. The speedo’s top end figure is 155mph - and I would guess it would reach into that promise if our road rules did not forbid such pace. As it is, it is electronically restricted, and its burst of relentless energy must remain a distant dream for the would-be racers. Whether you are skirting around town or streaking up our motorways, the 1.6-litre turbo-charged engine is your humble servant, obeying whatever heavy demands or otherwise that you impose upon it.The power seems to come from nowhere when you hoof it. In the deceptively roomy cabin, sport bucket seats, like home comforts, cope cosily with the longest treks, and the clutter-free dashboard with its multitasking colour touch-screen serves up all
the essential info. GTi trimmings abound, 19inch lightweight alloy wheels with low profile tyres, red-painted brake calipers with 380mm front discs, twin exhausts, and a GTi grrrrille. Throw in a reversing camera, parking sensors front and rear, cruise control, automatic folding door mirrors and an electric handbrake, and you are hard-pressed to think what else you might need. And the sheer generosity of deceptive space in the boot left Trophy Wife, an eager packer of a frock wardrobe fit for three, in a state of wideeyed gratitude as we headed for a partyfilled weekend. I am told that, when the hitherto heroic 205Gti was on offer in the UK from 1985 to 1994, it hit sales levels of 66,226. If that figure, despite opposition from, say, the Honda Civic Type R and the Seat Leon Cupra, is not beaten, then sacré bleu, buyers don’t know what they are missing. A real Purr-geot treat. The car that got the cream. Oh là là... Specification: Peugeot 308 GTi Hatchback. Engine 1.6T, 1598cc. BHP 2897. Max speed 155mph. 0-62 in 6.O secs. MPG 47. Price £28,155.

I was delighted to receive a call recently from a radio producer asking if I’d be available to interview The Corrs. “Haven’t they split up?” I wondered, but as the violinplaying vocalist Sharon told me “The Corrs never ended. Because even when we’re not in the band, we’re still the Corrs”. Sharon, who now lives in Andorra, has enjoyed a fair amount of success as a solo performer, but is delighted to be back in the limelight with her brother Jim and sisters Andrea and Caroline. They recently played in front of over 50,000 fans in Hyde Park and have just released a great new album, White Light, which is their first in ten years. As a group, they’ve sold in excess of 40 million albums, so when multi-instrumentalist Jim says “I have no doubt that this is our best record yet”, it’s worth checking out. Jim went on to claim that “the best of all of us is in this music”. At the heart of White Light lies the tragic loss of their father, Gerry, who motivated, inspired and supported the band from childhood. When he was suddenly taken ill in Dublin, the group supported him in hospital and later played at his funeral. Caroline said that it was an incredibly emotional time for them, and when they played at his funeral, it marked the first time they’d played together for 13 years. Andrea admitted that the experience brought them closer together because they were the only ones that have had this shared history and shared loss. Andrea went on to tell me that the album is certainly not a sombre affair. “There is defiance in the record rather than melancholy”. Andrea went on to say that there is a life-affirming feeling in the music, “bring it on, we can deal with it, because we’re here now and we have to”. To celebrate the release of White Light, they’re embarking on an 8 date UK tour in January and will play the O2 on Saturday, January 23rd . Lets’ hope that, in this case, the band that plays together stays together.
WINDOW 10
U P G R A D E Last July, Microsoft launched its latest operating system, Windows 10. A key part of Microsoft’s launch strategy was to provide a free-of-charge upgrade to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 users for the first 12 months. Although figures are difficult to obtain, there are estimates of about 200-500 million users currently enjoying the benefits of the new operating system. Windows 10 is a good, solid, stable operating platform. It is very fast to operate, it offers good compatibility with existing hardware and software products and it has a similar appearance and function to the Windows 7, Vista and XP product family. If you are buying a new machine, we would recommend Windows 10 on the system. However, as an upgrade to an existing installation ,we generally have advised against the upgrade because of a small number of problems that have been encountered during the upgrade process. Since its release, there have been a series of significant upgrades which have resolved some of the earlier issues, and so we are now recommending taking the upgrade, unless there are very specific reasons why you would not wish to. Before you take the upgrade, we recommend you back up your data, and if you have any non-mainstream software programs, we would advise you check with
the software publisher about their compatibility before upgrading. Bearing in mind the significant number of installations, we have encountered a few issues, ranging from apparent loss of all user’s data, email programs not functioning, inbuilt devices such as wireless network cards failing to function, machines locking up, machines stalling halfway through installation. In all cases, the problems have been resolved without any data loss or functionality. There are a couple of “features” in Windows 10 which you may wish to disable, the most obvious one being Peer to Peer Updates or P2P updates. This is where your machine becomes a server to enable other Windows users to obtain their updates from your computer without your knowledge. This can slow down your system and consume your broadband allowance, whilst slowing down your connection. To disable this feature, go to Settings/Updates, then Advanced option, select “Choose how updates are delivered”, then slide the slider from default “On” to “Off”. If we were to install or upgrade to Windows 10 for you, we would automatically disable this option and others aimed at decreasing your privacy. Please call for more details about how we can upgrade your system.

Every March, thousands of people take to the streets to collect donations for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal. Marie Curie is calling for more volunteers to help them in 2016 by signing up to collect at one of the 100 collections across Surrey. Most shifts are for 2 hours and it’s a great thing to do with a friend or family member, as most places allow two people to collect at a time. Dogs are also welcome! The money raised will go to Marie Curie’s Nursing Service, providing hands-on care and emotional support

NEW YEAR’S
HONOUR & SMASHED RECORDS THOUSANDS DESCEND ON HISTORIC SITE FOR RECORD-BREAKING CLASSIC START TO 2016!
T
he January Sales were practically nonexistent for anyone within driving distance of Brooklands Museum on January 1st. Over 7,000 people visited during the day from as far afield as Ormskirk in the north and Bournemouth in the south, with more than 1,500 classic vehicles making the annual pilgrimage to the historic setting in Weybridge, Surrey, to see in the New Year. The driving force of this unique event at the historic 32-acre site is inclusion: the beautiful, the ugly, the celebrated and the forgotten share equal billing at what is believed to be the UK’s largest January 1st classic gathering. And it isn’t hard to see why when you wander through row after row of family saloons, pre-war sports and touring cars, motorcycles, American hot rods and sixties icons, all packed onto the picturesque setting. Among the highlights were some heavy commercials, like the ‘cabover’ Chevrolet truck in a striking art deco style, a 2.5ltr Riley drophead and a very original Fiat 131 rally car recalling its heyday in the 1970s. Oddities ranged from a Citroen AMI6 with period Airstreamstyle caravan in tow, a pre-war Renault and an AEC WWI-era truck in combat finish. A Nash Metropolitan in two-tone raspberry and cream caused a stir, as did a beautifully restored rare RHD Jaguar XK120 fixed head

coupé in teal blue. Clubs represented included Rover P5 Owners, Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts, Porsche and Alvis Owners, and a gaggle of 1960s Minis from a number of clubs. As part of the Alvis OC display on the Hangar apron, one could see a 1927 1250 Alvista Saloon with a fabric body and a 12/60TK 2-seater sports Beetleback from 1931. On the Finishing Straight behind the Hangar, VW Camper Vans, a green Jensen Interceptor 3, Austin Healey 3000 MkIII from 1964 and a Rover 3500 happily shared the same concrete, whilst the crowds peered inside, chatted and took pictures. The swarms of eager visitors also filled all the exhibition areas to see the Museum’s own collections of classic racing cars, aircraft and motorcycles. The 4D Theatre and Concorde ran their respective virtual experiences, and the café and barbecue outlets just about kept up with the demand for hot food and drinks. Blessed with a cold but dry and crisp climate, the day heralds a fantastic start to the Museum’s calendar of events that run throughout the year. Brooklands Museum is open from 10am - 4pm (5pm in summer) every day, apart from a few days at Christmas. Admission is £11 for adults, £10 for seniors, £6 for children (aged 5 – 16) and just £30 for a family ticket. www.brooklandsmuseum.com | 01932 857 381

A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson (paperback £7.99) This is a companion novel to Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, and in my view, a far more satisfactory accomplishment. In Life After Life, the author toyed with time and created several different timelines and narratives for her main character Ursula Todd. In A God in Ruins, the focus is on Teddy, Ursula’s brother, and his life as an RAF Halifax pilot who is marked forever, not surprisingly, by that experience. Atkinson does bend time: she switches back and forth to different eras of Teddy’s life from chapter to chapter and it’s a technique that works well, giving us the fullest picture of the man. Teddy lives a very long life and this is such a rewarding book.
What the **** is normal? by Francesca Martinez (paperback £8.99) This warm-hearted and funny autobiography by award-winning comedian Francesca Martinez is more than a life story. It is a much-needed injection of rational thinking about contemporary identity and culture. What is normal, and what does the idea of normality do to us? Martinez tells a good story and her cultural critiques are immensely readable and uplifting. This is a book to thrust into the hands of teenagers and adults alike to promote the self-confidence that comes from rejecting our inner critic and revelling in the many joys of life.
I Refuse by Per Petterson (paperback £8.99) This is a novel of family and friendship, set in a rural Norwegian landscape. It follows Tommy, who is abandoned by his family in stages, starting at the age of 13, and whose strong bond with his only friend Jim is broken at the age of 18. Tommy’s emotional isolation and the violence he experiences are illuminated by Per Petterson’s sparse and minimalistic writing. A wonderful book.

A CRAFTY CIGARETTE TALES OF A TEENAGE MOD
A novel by Matteo Sedazzari -
foreword by John Cooper Clarke
A Crafty Cigarette is the powerful story of a teenager coming of age in the 70s, as seen through his eyes, who, on the cusp of adulthood, discovers a band that is new to him, The Jam, which leads him into becoming a Mod. A mischievous youth prone to naughtiness, he is attracted to the Mod ethos like a moth to a flame, which, in turn, gives him a voice, confidence and a fresh new outlook towards life, his family, his school, friends, girls and the world in general. Growing up in Sunbury-onThames, where he finds life rather dull and hard to make friends, he moves across the river with his family to Walton-on-Thames in 1979, the year of the Mod revival, where to his delight, he finds many other Mods his age and older and slowly but surely, he starts to become accepted and, furthermore, soon becomes a leading light within the young Mods of his peer group. Their tender years and their appearance, combined with a distinct lack of funds and parental control, conspire to prevent them from attending Mod related events, like gigs and clubs, in London. Thus, our eponymous hero, along with his new band of brothers, Vinnie, Rick and Tom, have many adventures out in the suburbs, ranging from fighting the local pub men and standing up to a local skinhead bully, to nicking Bruce Foxton’s bass. Our hero's adventures are not strictly within the confines of Mod; he finds himself bonding with the rebellious kids at his school, causing chaos at any given opportunity with the teachers. A Crafty Cigarette goes beyond just being a tale of a young Mod's passage into adulthood; it also focuses on the pitfalls of success or, rather, the lack of it, highlighting the failure of his father's circus career, who once worked with the famous Italian clown, Charlie Cairoli, only to be sacked by Cairoli whilst on the verge of making it, thereby, making him the Pete Best of the clown world! The ramifications of this blow to his proud father's ego just adds to the confused and crazy skewed outlook of our young hero. A Crafty Cigarette is a distillation of the metamorphosis of youth, embodied with a rebirth of the key character upon hearing the opening chord of The Jam’s song, ‘All Mod Cons’, and then growing up at a frantic pace, in keeping with Weller’s shouted '1,2,3 4' intro . Written in the first person, the story rocks along at a fast clip, on a par with a supercharged Jam single... a compelling narrative with the key character struggling to find his identity against the backdrop of late 70s chaos. Without being nostalgic or sentimental, A Crafty Cigarette is a candid snapshot of English suburban life in the late 70s and early 80s. The book is raw, honest, dark and witty, with the values and culture of Mod being paramount throughout (though not always presented as the ‘be all and end all’). A Crafty Cigarette is a powerful story and, arguably, not since The Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’, has there been such an in-depth study into the confused and multi-faceted lifestyle of striving to be a Mod… but this time, set in the very thick of the ’79 Mod revival. “ I couldn’t put it down because I couldn’t put it down.” John Cooper Clarke August 2015 For more info and press copies contact: Old Dog Publishing email: goldhawkpr@gmail.com

What’s great about Cobham A personal perspective by Transition Cobham member Ian Clifford. The Surrey countryside is very special. The bucolic outdoors is so close and yet we’re only 35 mins from the making Cobham healthier, heart of London. I’ve just taken up running and yesterday happier and more resilient I spotted a wide eyed Hawk spying a tasty rabbit. I moved to Downside 17 years ago from the little village of Taplow, Kent. The choice of Cobham was determined mostly on equal commuting times – my partner Sally was working in Docklands and I’m based in Bracknell. We got lucky! Strong local organizations, such as the CDRA, Cobham Heritage Trust and Downside & Hatchford community group, are critical to keeping Cobham a great place to live. They really help us, not just in terms of objecting to inappropriate planning, but also in their support of initiatives that make a difference. A great example is Transition Cobham’s Community garden on the leg O’mutton field. The community garden has now been fenced and will be growing tasty fruit and veg in 2016. If you are interested in helping – please email Jackie at garden@transitioncobham.org.uk If you’d like to join us, please visit www.transitioncobham.org.uk for more information. search for Transition Cobham
