Open Meeting & Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust will take place on Wednesday 20th March at the Cobham Village Hall, Lushington Drive starting at 8pm. This will be an Open Meeting when the Trust will report on its work during a successful and busy year. We are proud of our achievements and the active role we play in helping to ensure that the Cobham area retains its heritage, and hopefully does not lose its ‘village atmosphere’ - not always easy in the present clamour for change.
During the evening, Historian June Davey will explore some of the fascinating figures and events associated with West Horsley Place over the last 1000 years, from King Henry VIII to Sir Walter Raleigh, and of the Mary Roxburghe Trust’s vision for bringing it back to life. Trust members and non-members are welcome at what we hope will be an interesting and enjoyable evening, and please join us for a glass of wine following the meeting.
New opportunities at Cobham Community Garden Cobham Community Garden has opened its gates for the new season. We’re open from 10am to 12noon on Thursdays and Saturdays every week with extra Saturday afternoon sessions if needed. Sessions will work on a particular project, so you could be planting seeds one week, planting plants or pruning fruit bushes another. We’ll all work on the same job so we can really see the difference at the end. We still need a new Lead Gardener/s (easily shareable). The job involves deciding what’s grown where, ordering the seeds, planning sessions to get the work done and leading some. It’s a highly respected role in an immensely satisfying community project. You can be experimental and creative with 3 greenhouses and a lot of space! Our very able, dedicated and enthusiastic committee offer lots of support.
See you there on Thursdays or Saturdays, 10.00am - 12noon Contact us on hello@cobhamcommunitygarden.org.uk or 01932 862195

cumin & lemon chicken with spiced rice ingredients
400g pack essential British Chicken Mini Breast Fillets 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1½ tsp ground cumin 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 lemon, zest and juice ½ x 375g pack Tilda Basmati & Wild Rice 1 large onion, finely sliced 15g unsalted butter 1 leek, halved and sliced 2 carrots, grated 1 tsp ground cinnamon 50g dried cranberries 25g pack flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped 4 tbsp natural yogurt
Prep: 15mins. Cooking: 35mins Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes
method
1. Preheat the grill to high. Toss the chicken in a bowl with ½ tbsp oil, ½ tsp cumin, the garlic & the juice of ½ lemon; season & set aside. Put the rice in a large saucepan & cover with plenty of cold water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 20 mins; drain. 2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining ½ tbsp oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion & a pinch of salt; fry for 10mins, stirring, until just golden. Add the butter, leek & carrots & fry for another 3-4mins. Stir in the remaining 1 tsp cumin, the cinnamon & cranberries; fry for another 2-3mins. Stir through the drained rice & the remaining juice of ½ lemon; check the seasoning. 3. Arrange the chicken fillets in a foil-lined shallow baking tray & grill for 5-6mins on each side, until the juices run clear & there is no pink meat. Toss the parsley through the rice, then stir most of the lemon zest through the yogurt, with the remainder sprinkled on top. Serve the chicken with the rice & the lemon yogurt alongside.
cook’s tip This spiced rice goes well with all kinds of meat and fish. Try serving it with lamb chops or salmon fillets.

Gardening Matters Pruning
March is here and the word on the street is pruning. My favourite job, especially on yellow shrubs. It includes drastic tree lopping, tidying of shrubs and snipping out of new growth. There are 5 good reasons to prune: - To remove dead/diseased/damaged material - To shape - To create an open centre for air to circulate and encourage a healthier shrub - To remove unnecessary parts so that energy is concentrated where it’s needed and growth is stimulated, usually from the dormant, outward-facing bud nearest the cut - - To control the quantity of fruit/flower by reducing the number of buds, as with tomatoes, grapes or prize chrysanthemums The golden rule for pruning is, if in doubt, prune immediately after flowering so that new growth and a ripening process can occur before the next flowering’s due. Generally, lightly prune in autumn and prune harder in spring, although foliage plants should always be pruned in spring. Before any pruning, sharpen your tools and sterilise with a flame or surgical spirit - and make a clean cut with no jagged edges. With light pruning, relatively little is cut away – 1 in 3 of the branches for forsythia/weigela/lilac/philadelphus/ roses (climbing/rambling). Light pruning also involves trimming shrubs to shape, such as ceanothus after flowering, where you’re not aiming to reduce it to within an inch of its life, but rather, to make its shape
Cecelia John: 01372 200 000 18 Looklocal Magazine - March 2019
more pleasing and less random. To encourage a plant to grow taller for screening, prune its sides, and to increase its width/density/thickness, prune its top. Simples. Hard pruning involves the removal of much of the growth. Some shrubs become so overgrown, unsightly and old that they need pruning to 6” from the ground. You’ll miss out on 1-2 years flowering, but you may save a shrub otherwise doomed for the bonfire. Beech/ laurel/privet all respond well to hard pruning, as does rhododendron, but be sure to give rhodis an ericaceous feed. Buddleia and lavatera should be cut down to 6-9” each year and cornus to 3”. This apparently harsh pruning maintains shape, vigour, health, and with cornus, colour. After a hard prune, the plant will suffer from shock, so rake away all debris, aerate the soil with a fork, apply a feed – Growmore, fish/blood/bonemeal/ pelleted poultry manure – hoe in, and water well. Some plants - conifers/lavender/santolina - shouldn’t be cut back to the brown. In other words, they should only be cut back to a growing shoot or they’ll die. This pruning can still be quite drastic, but just make sure that you cut to a leaf or flower bud/shoot. Some variegated plants will eventually begin to revert to their original one colour, but if you cut out the reversions, you’ll prevent the plant reverting completely. There, I bet you feel better after all that cutting. Very therapeutic, eh? And all these prunings can be used for cuttings. Yaaay, free plants. Nature is indeed a miracle. |

Why not making volunteering your New Years resolution for 2019?
Have you ever thought about volunteering, but never found the right time to start? With January being the perfect time for New Year’s resolutions, make volunteering a plan you commit to this year. The Community Support Services team at Elmbridge Borough Council are currently looking for volunteers to support the Meals on Wheels service across the Centres for the Community. Each week, volunteer drivers deliver almost 1,000 meals across the Borough to older and vulnerable residents. A standard delivery round only takes a couple of hours and each volunteering role is flexible, fitting in with personal commitments and lifestyle. The Meals on Wheels service is a life-line for so many residents and more than a meal; a visit from the volunteer is vital for someone that might not see anyone else during the day. Trish, a dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer for over 20 years says: “I just love volunteering as a Meals on Wheels driver. Each time I volunteer I feel like I am giving

back to the community. The residents are always so pleased to see me, which makes me feel appreciated in my role”. If volunteering for Meals on Wheels isn’t what you’re looking for, the Centres have a variety of opportunities that can work around your schedule. Roles range from volunteering in the tea bar and leading arts and crafts activities; to providing support to people with learning disabilities or memory loss. Councillor Andrew Burley the Portfolio Holder for Community & Social Affairs notes: “We are so grateful to the volunteers that dedicate their time each week to supporting the local community. Every person plays a fundamental role in keeping our services running. If you’re thinking of volunteering, make 2019 the year you join our team”. To find a volunteering opportunity that suits you, please visit elmbridge.gov.uk/css/volunteer, or alternatively speak to the Voluntary and Support Services Manger on 01372 474 552.

Updates, Security and Protection... the importance of updating and protecting your computers Getting updates to your computer and mobile devices core operating system and programs is so important as the updates protect you against the latest threats. When applying any updates this can be a lengthy process, which your device will (usually) do for you automatically and often the device will require a restart. We have seen instances where the updates do not apply correctly for whatever reason, in one instance an Apple iMac had all its data wiped and we had to go through a costly data recovery process to recover the data. The moral to the story here is ensure you have a current backup of your data. Just last week there was a Windows update that caused the machine to lock and blue screen, the entire process to self-resolve the problem took about 2 hours to return a working machine, and involved a number of very laborious restarts. The dangers of not having your machine updated far outweigh the risks of taking the updates. Windows 7 is scheduled to go end of extended support on 14 January 2020 Windows 8 is scheduled to go end of extended support on 10 January 2023 As a general rule, Apple will keep their most current two versions of software alive and will retire anything older, using this yard stick V10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave) are the most recent versions We have also seen a significant increase in the number of hacks coming via older versions of Internet Explorer. This could be in the guise of a banner appearing on your screen saying you have been caught viewing illicit material and will be reported unless you pay a ransom. These messages are intrusive and indicate that there may be someone logging your keystrokes, meaning your security is at risk. Our advice here is to download and use an alternative internet browser - which is still updated like Google Chrome or Firefox
We are now hearing more about data breaches as they occur, all a part of last years GDPR regulations, but it estimated that 3 billion email account passwords are compromised and on the dark web, if you have had the same password since 2017, we strongly encourage you to change your password, and include upper case, lower case. numbers and punctuation symbols, as a guide this website offers you an indication of how long it will take a computer to crack your password. https://howsecureismypassword.net/ This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Surrey’s star shines brightly at coveted “People’s Honours” National Awards
Community stalwart and inspirational founder of Surrey Music, Cliff van Tonder, has been recognised at a prestigious ceremony at The Palace of Westminster held onThursday 24th January, and honoured with a British Citizen Award for Services to the Arts (BCAa). The British Citizen Award serves to recognise “determined, committed endeavour in improving the workplace or community, effectively impacting the lives of those around them”. Cliff was nominated by Surrey Music - the community organisation he founded and runs voluntarily as CEO and Musical Director - in recognition of his 13 years of selfless service in creating, nurturing and growing the society, and for the huge impact he has had on his members and the wider community, and for the positive contribution he has made to society. In 2005 Cliff formed Elmbridge Choir in Cobham, to provide an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to enjoy performing choral music while at the same time giving something back to their local community. 13 years later, Surrey Music has raised more than £175,000 for charitable purposes, awarded grants totalling £14,000 for music activities and initiatives, established a big band, supported a youth band, enabled a group of adults with learning disabilities to enjoy weekly music sessions, and now comprises two thriving community choirs - Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir - with a membership of 240 members.
Along with 29 other worthy recipients from all corners of the UK, Cliff was presented with a specially struck medal inscribed with the words ‘For the Good of the Country’, and a framed Certificate of Honour. The ceremony was hosted by patrons of The British Citizen Award, The Rt. Hon. The Lord Dholakia OBE DL and Dame Mary Perkins. Medals and certificates were presented by sponsors of the Award: Specsavers, Unilever, Unity Trust Bank, Experianand The Cooperative Bank. Cliff was presented with his medal by Places for People’s Group Executive Director for Affordable Housing, Pat Egan, who said, “It was an honour to present Cliff with an Award. His efforts towards making music accessible for everyone has brought the community to life. Cliff’s exceptional dedication in creating a community choir has allowed hundreds of people to experience the joys of singing and performing.” “There is no end to Cliff’s drive and energy which he gives freely and in abundance to the members of Surrey Music and to serving the local community,” explains Surrey Music’s Publicity Officer, Debbie Groves, who nominated Cliff for the award on behalf of the society. “Nominating him for a British Citizen Award was a very fitting way to thank him for all he does, and we couldn’t be happier for him that his efforts have been recognised in this way.” “I am so incredibly humbled and honoured to receive this Award, and very proud that I was able to represent Surrey at the ceremony!” said Cliff. “I heard so many inspiring stories of courage and conviction and feel privileged to receive this honour for doing something that I love.” The event was hosted by TV personality Michael Underwood, who stated “Having presented the very first British Citizen Awards, it’s a real honour to be invited back and a privilege. I am in awe learning more about the incredible people being recognised for their contribution to society.”

Family business raises vital funds for neighbouring hospice
Award-winning garden centre and farm shop Garsons of Esher has raised an amazing £6,000 for their charity of the year for 2018, the Princess Alice Hospice. The Christmas period alone brought in nearly £4,500 of that figure as generous shoppers placed donations in charity boxes at the tills and collection buckets at the garden centre’s popular late-night festive shopping events. The annual appearance of two live reindeer in the run

up to Christmas helped to further boost funds. Visitors were able to visit them for free but encouraged to give any spare change into collection buckets by the reindeer enclosure. For the first time, Garsons hosted one of the Hospice’s Memory Trees alongside the reindeer, enabling customers to remember loved ones by placing a dove decoration on a lit-up Christmas tree. By the end of the festive period, the tree was covered with around 1,000 memory doves, each inscribed with personal and moving messages and accompanied by a donation to the charity. Princess Alice Hospice senior partnership fundraiser Claire Woodward said: “We have been truly amazed by the generosity of Garsons customers towards the hospice over the festive season, and extremely grateful for the garden centre’s support us this year. “Garsons is renowned for its magnificent Christmas displays - the amazing West End stage theme this year was stunning – and we are indebted to them for offering their customers the chance to remember loved ones by hosting one of the Hospice’s Memory Trees.” It costs more than £9.9 million a year to provide the care Princess Alice gives patients, their families and carers and it relies on local people and businesses like Garsons to ensure it continues to provide this muchneeded support. “We have a close relationship with the Princess Alice Hospice and greatly admire the amazing care that they give families,” said director of Garsons, Ben Thompson. “It has been a privilege to support them through the past year and we would like to thank our customers for being so generous and helping us achieve this fantastic total.” For more information about the Princess Alice Hospice visit www.pah.org.uk
Good for Esher Playscheme:
Great for
A visit from Ofsted to the Challengers Esher Playscheme resulted in an exciting ‘Good’ grade for the charity. Challengers challenges the barriers to play by providing fully inclusive play and leisure opportunities for disabled children and young people between the ages of 2-25. Their non-exclusion policy; no child or young person is excluded based on the severity of their needs, creates a high demand amongst parents. The Esher Playscheme is one of those schemes and provides exciting play services, such as baking and cooking, farm visits, messy arts and crafts days and lots more, to 4-12-year-old disabled children in the Elmbridge area. Christmas is a busy period for most and amidst organising Santa surprise visits, Esher had an Ofsted inspection. The inspection focused on three key indicators of the quality and standards of the early years provision. Challengers is proud to have been awarded the “Good” grade. It was fantastic for the organisation to finish 2018 with a positive confirmation from Ofsted “Receiving a Good rating from Ofsted is excellent not only for the Scheme but the Organisation, it reflects the hard
work the team have put in to build and establish a safe, fun and stimulating environment for all children that come to Challengers. The report has given us areas where we can develop and work towards an “Outstanding” inspection.” Challengers are looking forward to an action packed 2019 at Esher Playscheme. The scheme is running on Saturdays and during the holidays, engaging the children in sensory play as well as offering an extensive playground! Should the summer of 2019 be as sunny as the previous, our Esher Playscheme has an outside pool which can also be enjoyed. If you would like to attend Esher Playscheme or would like to know more about Challengers, please visit our website www.disability-challengers.org/what-we-do or give our Operations Team a call on 01483 230 930. Toyota Supra Car Review
Supra-dooper! That is Toyota’s upcoming newcomer, a challenger of immense ability in the highly competitive sports car market. And it is due for a mid-summer launch, which is as exciting a prospect as can be. After months of rumour and anticipation the release of the long-nosed two-door coupe, an out-and-out sports car, has been finally confirmed, and already more than 350 buyers have ordered the exhilarating flyer. It was given a sneak preview at the recent Detroit Motor Show and it caused an instant stir and an avalanche of questions on when it would be up for sale. Little wonder. It is pleasing to look at and its underlying performance presence and promise will, I am confidently certain, accelerate it to the top the wish list of those with fifty grand to invest in a showpiece thriller that recaptures both the spirit and appearance of all that genuine sports car enthusiasts desire. It has been an arduous and tantalizing wait with Toyota cleverly leaking hints that the rumours of its appearance are not too far removed from the truth. It has been developed surreptitiously at the Nurburgring in Germany, the track scene of many an memorable car race. So, what about its power play? That is an exciting breathtaker, too. Every Supra boasts a turbo-charged straight six engine, developing 335 brake horse power. The cockpit, under a double-bubble roof, is a treat, designed around a set of race-inspired closely and cosy seats with extra side bolsters, high back support and integrated head restraints. And in every car there is a set of digital dials, and extensively fully informative infotainment screen.
44 Looklocal Magazine - March 2019

Phew!!! And it does not stop there...every car will be fitted with alloy wheels, high performance brakes, adaptive dampers and adjustable driving modes to ensure maximum cooperation. Add to that a rear view camera and 12-speaker audio system. All the Supras sold in Europe will revel in a feedback in a stunner of performance to please...it will smoothly dart with seamless power to 62 mph in a mere 4.3 seconds and roar onto an electronically limited 155mph with its eight-speed automatic gearbox easing and ensuring thoroughly effective progress. It has a short wheelbase but its wider tyres, beneficial stance and balance give it a feel-safe attitude. The Toyota warning is crystal clear. Watch out the likes of Porsche, Jaguar, Audi and BMW, The Supra is on its way....and how!!! Specification. Toyota Supra. Engine: Three-litre. Six cylinders. Turbo-charged. 340HP. Top speed limited to 155mph. 0-62 mph in 4.3secs. Price ÂŁ50,00-plus .

Book Reviews March ‘Asymmetry’ by Lisa Halliday (Paperback, £8.99) On a Manhattan park bench Alice, a young editor, is charmed by Ezra, a much older and well-known author. Their differing ages and finances begin as a playful setting for a connection which grows beyond their initial light-hearted meetings. Halliday writes their relationship from the outside; we are observers. At Heathrow, economist Amar is detained by immigration on his way to Kurdistan. Intelligent and patient, he talks us through his experience first-hand, exploring the practical and emotional delicacies of immigrant life in the US, and family visits to Baghdad. Halliday’s narrative versatility and the many other lives glimpsed in Assymetry open up a wide, rewarding and complex world.
‘In Your Defence’ by Sarah Langford (Paperback, £8.99) Sarah Langford, a bannister, skilfully demonstrates the workings and failings of the underfunded family court system. In each chapter we follow a different character, meeting people from all walks of life. Langford seamlessly weaves us through the law’s process and procedures, and the everyday rituals and routines of barristers. The gripping storylines of each individual are told with heartache and humour, high drama and quiet pain, along with her own feelings as she defends them.
‘Chéri’ by Colette (Paperback, £7.99) The recent film about Colette’s life is a great reminder to enjoy the delicacy of her writing. Here she explores with wit and poignancy the conflicting demands of society, self-interest and the heart. For six years Chéri, a beautiful young man, has been living a life of idle indulgence with Lea, an elegant courtesan approaching the end of her career. Parted by Chéri’s suitable marriage, the lovers blunder through denial into the realisation of the depth of their loss amidst the deliciously artful malice of society friendships. : 01932 862903 : info@cobhambooks.com : www.cobhambooks.com : 12A Anyards Rd, Cobham, KT11 2JZ
