Welcome to Look Local in October! It seems that autumn has arrived, then! Pumpkins, apples and blackberries, conkers and, dare I mention it, Christmas adverts on the TV already! How time flies, and it will soon be time to turn the clocks back again too :-( That’s on Sunday 30th October … But before we get our winter hats and scarves out, let’s take a look back at the Cobham Heritage Day. Sadly, it wasn’t a brilliantly sunny day, but that didn’t stop the good folk of Cobham coming out and enjoying this lovely event. Armed with umbrellas, a good time was had by all who attended, and after all, ducks love the rain don’t they ?! I hope you enjoy our photographic coverage of the day. Guest writer Lauren Oats shares a wonderful article about a very talented teacher at her school. I simply don’t know how she fits all this achieving in around being a teacher too. What an amazing lady! I really enjoyed your writing, Lauren, I hope we hear from you again. We also have news on the first in a series of concerts being performed by Oxshott and Cobham Music Society and a ‘not to be missed’ membership offer for our readers too! Why not take advantage of this great offer and enjoy a wonderful season of high calibre musical entertainment, at a great price too! That’s about it from me this month. I wish you all a good October. Warmest regards,

Ros

P lay BOWLS ALL

YEAR ROUND At Cobham Club, Lushington Drive, Surrey, KT11 2AY

The game of bowls dates back as far as the 13th century and history recalls Sir Francis Drake playing on Plymouth Hoe before departing for the Spanish Armada. Bowls is a very simple game, often made difficult by those who play. Outdoor bowling is played on a closely mown green, divided into “rinks”. A game is divided into an agreed number of ends with up to 4 people in each team. Bowls belonging to the same team which are nearest the “jack” all score, the team with the highest aggregate score at the end being the winner. Indoor bowling is played on mats and may be either short or long mat, but the principles are the same. There are many people in Cobham who are unaware of the existence of this local, friendly, sociable club in Lushington Drive (by the tennis courts), where one can get some exercise at the same time as meeting new friends and enjoying a pleasant afternoon or evening. The club was founded in 1932, with a new clubhouse being built in 1996, funded with the help of the Sports Lottery. The spacious clubhouse and green are tucked away behind the tennis courts by the recreation

ground and there are good facilities for outdoor and indoor bowling. The summer season lasts from April to September, and open days are organised in April to encourage new bowlers to give the game a try. There are informal “roll-ups” 2 or 3 times a week in the afternoon or evening, giving members an opportunity to practise and improve, as well as have a good time. From October to March, the club house is cleverly transformed into a short mat facility. What better way to spend a cold, wet winter afternoon or evening? The week beginning 17th October is an OPEN WEEK for indoor bowling, when there will be club members available to help you get started. Anyone may come along and give it a try without obligation. The only necessity is a flat pair of shoes. Bowls are always available at the club. MONDAY 17th OCTOBER 2pm onwards TUESDAY 18th OCTOBER 7pm onwards WEDNESDAY 19th OCTOBER 2pm onwards THURSDAY 20th OCTOBER 7pm onwards SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER 2pm onwards

Rebecca Rowe

FROM ROWER TO SECOND ROW

by Lauren Oates

R

ebecca Rowe, a local PE teacher and rowing coach at Sir William Perkins’s School, rowed for Great Britain – gaining a Commonwealth Games Silver Medal for Wales in 2006, as well as a European Championship Bronze for Great Britain. She also has world titles in surf lifesaving and swam for Wales. More recently, she has represented Wales as a rugby player in the Six Nations. Consequently, I took it upon myself to get to know a little bit more about her. Due to her incredibly modest nature, I have had to do a fair bit of research to unveil the exact extent of her sporting excellence. How did her athletic career begin? As a ten-year-old, when she had taken great joy in playing in the sea, her parents had feared for her safety and sent her to a swimming club which led her to surf lifesaving. Rebecca is driven by a passion for challenging herself. She was keen to remind me that for every individual, the extent to which they push themselves will be unique to them. One of her greatest regrets was that, by always aspiring to achieve more, it was at times easy to overlook smaller successes. After a devastating back injury which ended her rowing career, she took up rugby in 2010. From this, I think many of us can learn a lot from Rebecca, as she managed to overcome the great disappointment of not being able to row in the Olympics, which she had been on track to do, and to find other ways to enjoy sport. However, she did highlight that everyone has bad sessions,

races and seasons, and ‘it’s natural to be annoyed at ourselves, but the important thing to remember is afterwards, we need to move on and keep improving ourselves, rather than dwelling on it.’ Since 2010, she has played for Harlequins, London Welsh and finally Richmond. After being unable to attend Welsh rugby team trials, due to work commitments, Rebecca bravely rang up the head coach and managed to arrange her own personal trial which resulted in selection. If there is a stereotype that females lack selfconfidence, then this is a perfect lesson for those fulfilling these defined roles. It demonstrates that we should have more confidence in ourselves and take risks. In this example, it is proven that the result can be incredibly rewarding, even if we do risk potentially embarrassing ourselves. What weekly training is required of her? 3 weight sessions 2 rugby-specific sessions 2 fitness/conditioning sessions What does she enjoy about rugby? Rebecca enjoys the team aspect of the sport and finds it in keeping with her competitive nature. Her ‘favourite

memory so far was beating France a couple of weeks ago [February 2016] because I was part of a historic win, as Wales hasn’t beaten them since 2008.’ Moreover, ‘Wales has made some big improvements over the last year and we have now qualified for the World Cup [which will be in 2017]’. She argues that, with good organisation, it is definitely possible to excel in sport as well as in our day-to-day lives. Remember though, ‘rest is also key.’ She encourages us to find a sport we really enjoy and keep challenging ourselves. She argues that ultimately, anyone who wants to play rugby should definitely look into it, as it is accessible to people of all shapes and sizes, which was a surprise to her. initially. She suggests that if there is anyone who would like to play rugby, they can find girls’ or mixed teams near to them via the RFU website. When I ask what her future ambitions are for her sporting career, she throws me an exasperated grin and modestly protests ‘Lauren, I’m getting old!’ I can’t realistically see this incredible and inspirational athlete’s career ending any time soon, so keep a look out for her.

IN CLAYGATE The OCMS has a strongly-held reputation for offering musical performance of the highest calibre. Take advantage of this bargain: - join as a New Member for £70, stating you have seen this article in Look Local, and receive 6 concerts at the average price of just over £11 each.

S

eventy-five years have passed since the young English pianist, Moura Lympany, gave a recital in Cobham to a group of ladies delighted to have a change from their usual fare of talks. A chance remark had led to the discovery that in their midst was a pianist of exceptional talent, already garnering fame as a result of winning the 2nd prize in the same prestigious Brussels International Competition in which Emil Gilels was the Supreme Laureate. That Cobham recital led to Sir Adrian Boult (conductor) assisting in the formation of the new Oxshott and Cobham Music Society. This year, six concerts across the winter months will bring superb international artists to Holy Trinity Church, Claygate, with its wonderful acoustics and comfortable seating. The OCMS has a strongly held reputation for offering musical performances of the highest calibre. There is no need to drive to London or wait on cold railway stations, and no need to pay London prices. Instead, take advantage of this bargain: -join as a New Member for £70, stating you have seen this article in Look Local, and receive six concerts at the average price of just over £11 each. Single tickets range from £18 to £22. This season’s first three concerts are before Christmas, and include the amazing American “Dover Quartet”, winners of not only the 1st prize, but also the 2nd, 3rd and 4th special prizes at the Banff International Competition in 2013! A clean sweep! They are described as having the qualities to make them “the next Guarnerius Quartet.” Former BBC New Generation Artist Leonard Elschenbroich (cello), with the amazing Alexei Grynyuk (piano), and the piano Trio Gaspard from Germany follow. Other concerts include the Pelléas Ensemble (flute, viola and harp); “rising star” Vitaly Pisarenko, the

Ukrainian 1st prize winner of the Utrecht International Piano Competition, and the Celebrity Recital by Julian Bliss (clarinet). Last year, he appeared in the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. As the well-known lecturer, Roy Stratford, wrote of a performance by Sun Wook Kim: “It is quite remarkable that the residents of Claygate can go along to their local church and hear a pianist who in 2006 was the youngest winner of the Leeds Piano Competition (in forty years), a competition that has nurtured pianistic greats such as Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu. We heard a very powerful, unmannered performance of Beethoven’s extraordinary Diabelli Variations. Kim was a marvellous guide to this panorama, - agile, alert and incredibly flawless in both technique and memory. What a feat for a young musician and what a privilege to witness it in comfort and in a church with a fine acoustic in a village in Surrey !” The first concert is at 8pm on Saturday 15 October at Holy Trinity Church, Church Road, Claygate, KT10 0JP. THE VINERIES LOVELY LOCAL COFFEE SHOP

VINES AT THE VINERIES

BRUNCH AT VINES COFFEE SHOP WITH MICHELLE FROM THE VINERIES

Recently, I very much enjoyed sharing brunch at Vines Coffee Shop with Michelle from The Vineries. It was lovely to catch up with her and sample the menu at this lovely local coffee shop. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and the menu offers a wide variety which I feel sure has something to please most tastes. We enjoyed a bacon sandwich on brown (with beautifully cooked, crispy bacon to order!) and Eggs Benedict, again perfectly cooked and presented, as I hope you can see in my photos here. The staff are lovely too, friendly but professional and attentive in just the right measures. The coffee shop is open daily for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea and makes a great venue to meet up with friends or relatives for some really good, freshly prepared food and a relaxed chat. Free wifi adds to the experience if you simply want to catch up online! There are even a few tables available for dog owners to sit with their beloved pooches (my dog has visited with me a few times and she is always welcomed and has loved watching the world go by as I enjoy a coffee). Lunch is always a treat at Vines and wine is also available should you wish to really push the boat out! With Christmas just around the corner, I’d recommend this as a lovely pre-Christmas meal option. See menu in the Novermber issue of Look Local Magazine. The food will be good and crackers will add to the occasion, silly hats a must! Booking recommended.

Thanks go to Michelle and Ian for inviting me to Vines - I had a lovely time!

MATTERS

Soil. Arguably the most important component of a successful garden. So why don’t many of us give it enough attention?

W

ithout a basic knowledge and understanding of what type you have, it’s impossible to know which plants will thrive and which won’t. So, let’s have a little look..... Soils are complex ecosystems with a huge diversity of life, more than all the above-ground ecosystems put together, but you don’t need a degree to understand what’s going on below stairs. Observation, a bit of digging and some basic plant knowledge will give you key information, and a cheap pH kit from the garden centre will tell you quickly whether to buy acid-loving azaleas or lime-loving ceanothus. Some plants are undoubtedly better adapted than others to particular types of soil, and by selecting the right plants, you’ll get the best out of both the plant and the soil conditions. Well-cultivated, healthy soils consist of 50%-60% mineral matter – mainly rock, broken down over 1000s of years

by glaciers, weathering and roots - and 5% organic matter, formed by green waste, such as leaf mould and plant material, plus added stuff, eg well-rotted manure, compost etc. The rest is made up of equal parts of air and water, the air content being as vital as the percentage of organic matter. Airless, or anaerobic soils, are instantly recognisable by their bad smell, and this presents several challenges, not least because it indicates a lack of any soil life: worms are critical to maintaining open, porous soils. Water content and the ability to maintain a level of moisture and get rid of excess water are also crucial. Soils range from fast-draining sand to heavy clay, with everything in between, and even in one garden, there can be multiple characteristics. Clay soils tend to be alkaline and hold onto moisture, which is both bad and good: bad, because they’ll be claggy, but good because they retain nutrients better than other soils, such as acid sand. In all cases, the more organic matter added,

the better. It’s almost impossible to overdo it: the 5% will remain roughly stable because of the natural tendency of soils to leach nutrients. Also, plants use organic matter as they grow, and the weather and creatures will also deplete it. Adding more organic matter opens up the soil, creating a more favourable environment for worms and improving the movement and drainage of water, as well as moisture retention. Digging a hole and leaving it open for 24 hours will show the localised soil conditions in your garden. A mossy lawn is often a sign of poor drainage, the presence of creeping buttercup indicates a tendency towards wetness and stinging nettles only thrive on nutrient-rich, cultivated soils. Walking through your garden after heavy rain will show you immediately where water puddles and where it drains more readily. As a result, you can get to grips with improving the soil, and the more work that goes into this, the better the end results will be.

Volunteer Fundraiser Wanted Horsley & Bookham Riding for the Disabled Association Reg. charity 1073648

Are you enthusiastic, good with people, enjoy organising, up for a new challenge, possibly recently retired? We are looking someone who fits this description to join our team to plan and organise fundraising events, generate donations and sponsorship and generally raise our profile in the local community. A knowledge of horses and previous fundraising experience are not essential. With a team of over 100 volunteers we operate under the auspices of the national RDA organisation but have to raise all our own funds to give over 1000 rides every year to disabled children and adults from the local community. If this could be you call Colin Sandford, 01483-280870, email 1colinsandford@gmail.com, or Sheri Johnson, 07990-971123, email sheri@swjcons.com

ASK BRUCE:

DOGGY DUO

This month, Look Local reader Rona says she’s thinking of getting a second dog to join her 18-month-old spaniel, and asks what’s the best age gap between dogs in the same family? Eighteen months to two years works well. I have two labradors and chose to get a second one when the first one was two. They get on really well and are at a similar stage in their life – like children at school – so they play together and leave each other alone when tired. The most important thing to remember is that the age gap shouldn’t be too wide. For example, a young puppy in the same house as a canine old aged pensioner is not fair on the older dog. The puppy will be too full-on for its mature companion and the relationship could suffer. Like older humans, aged dogs can get grumpy! As well as age, however, temperament is also key. Most people have two or more dogs from the same breed, as they are likely to be compatible. Having said that, here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care we also have dogs from the same family who are very different: for example, a large labradoodle and a mini dachshund that are best of friends. You can also mix the sexes of the dogs as long as one has been neutered. Otherwise, you could end up with more than just two dogs! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce? Send your questions to :-

broadband

EVERYWHERE... This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. With more and more devices requiring internet connection, the original wireless router is having quite a job keeping up with the demand. In the home If you need a better wifi signal around your home, we have a variety of solutions perfect for this situation and installable in seconds. One solution is a two-part kit: one bit plugs into your 13 amp mains socket near the router and cable connects to your router and the second part plugs into any mains socket, usually in the distant part of the property where the internet connection is poor. This re-broadcasts your broadband/network connection and is highly portable and very convenient. With costs stating at £40.00, it’s a very affordable option Between buildings To link your outbuilding, garden office or studio to your house, we have a perfect solution. By mounting a booster antenna on the outside of your house and another on your outbuilding, your wifi and network signal can be boosted for up to 15kms... yes, that’s correct, 15kms (so say the manufacturers). We have bridged gaps of 100s of metres trouble-free.

The antennae in question cost only £65.00 each, and we can install the units professionally for you. Please call for further information. Satellite broadband If you live in a poor broadband connection area or want broadband in your motorhome or on your boat, we have the answer for you. Satellite broadband offers you connection speeds of 20Mb download and upload of 2Mb for a static solution, and 10Mb download/ 256K upload for mobile users, with different systems offering coverage across the UK and Europe. We will handle the supply and installation for you. Please call for more info.

music MATTERS

Words by David Kid Jensen

Six of the best...

I’m sure not everyone will agree with my choices, but just for fun this month, I thought I’d take the liberty of listing my six favourite albums of all time. Pet Sounds – Beach Boys 1966 While Rubber Soul was Brian Wilson’s inspiration behind Pet Sounds, there’s little doubt that he not only matched but even topped the Beatles’ recording. Stand-out tracks include God Only Knows and Wouldn’t It Be Nice. What’s Going On – Marvin Gaye 1971 An album which revolutionised soul music with the beautifully textured voice of the brilliant Marvin Gaye. Smokey Robinson rates this as his favourite album of all time. That says it all, with songs such as the title track and Mercy Mercy Mercy Me. Lady Soul – Aretha Franklin 1968 There is little doubt that Aretha was the first lady of soul with this rapturous mix of spine-tingling soul and feelgood funk. Check out her own composition Ain’t No Way. Miles Davis – Miles Davis Kind of Blue 1959 The best of Miles, and that’s going some, as he exchanges licks with the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane. Want to get into jazz? Get into Kind of Blue Frank Sinatra – In The Wee Small Hours 1955 The all-time greatest break-up album, recorded in the aftermath of his split with Ava Gardner. Feel his pain. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA 1984 The Boss came up with 100 songs for this album, of which only 12 made the final cut. Thunderous anthems sit well next to reflective ballads which define this milestone in the life and times of a true American superstar Van Morrison – Astral Weeks 1968 Finally (for now), this list wouldn’t be complete without at least mention of Sir Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, in which 23-year-old Van lets loose with his love of jazz and poetry. I particularly love Sweet Thing. Well, after much to-ing and fro-ing, those are my 6. How about yours?

Being a Beast by Charles Foster (Paperback £8.99) Have you ever wondered how badgers, red deer, foxes, otters or swifts experience life? For Charles Foster, merely observing these creatures was not enough, and he burrowed, splashed and sniffed his way towards a better understanding of their worlds. His dedication to this method-acting approach to nature writing is unorthodox, but a wealth of neuroscience and biology translates the results of his experiments into intriguing insights. The sharpening of his senses and the discovery of worlds within our world, separated by points of view, make this an illuminating read. The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry (Hardback £14.99) In 1893, Cora Seaborne, an amateur naturalist, travels to Essex with her peculiar son and her forthright friend. Cora has recently been liberated by the death of her oppressive husband, and away from London she can take refuge in the security of old friendships and the sudden delight of the new. Muddying the waters is the tale of the Essex Serpent, to whose malign powers are attributed a recent death and strange happenings in the village of Aldwinter. The vicar, William Ransome, finds in Cora a lively antidote to the superstition of his parishioners, and their connection deepens despite their intellectual rivalry. Back in London, Cora’s devoted friend the Imp, a daring and brilliant surgeon, grows in ambition and jealousy. The mingling strands of medical advancement, country mythology, urban discontent and the power of friendship make this novel a beguiling glimpse into the years of change at the end of the nineteenth century. Did You Ever Have a Family by Bill Clegg (Paperback £8.99) This is the story of the aftermath of a house fire and explosion which kills four people - Luke, Lolly, Will and Adam - on the morning of a family wedding. June, the mother of the bride (Lolly), disappears for nearly a year, hiding away in a motel. Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view, so the reader gradually pieces together the events. It’s a book about families, small towns, knowing other people’s business and how secrets and lies have long-running impacts on others’ lives. Clegg’s prose conveys the numbed grieving state of mind - its quietness fitting its subject of deep clear-eyed sadness. A lovely book.

Food miles How many miles does ‘fresh’ food travel, and how long does it take to arrive? Spanish broccoli travels 950miles and loses so making Cobham healthier, many nutrients since cutting that happier and more resilient the UK Food Standards Agency recommends using frozen broccoli for a higher nutrient content. Eating local food makes sense nutritionally and environmentally and you don’t have to dig up your garden or take on your own allotment. Friends at Cobham Community Garden grow seasonal fruit and veg. Either come and buy, or better still, share growing with us – it can be as casual as you like and there’s nothing like eating something you’ve helped grow. Ask our youngest volunteer – he’s five and the lettuce he grew tasted the best ever! We’re on the Leg O’Mutton Field by the allotments, open Thursdays and Saturdays 10-12am and 2- 4pm. Peugeot5008

CAR REVIEW

Ted Macauley test drives the new seven-seater 5008 MPV and lets us know what it has to offer...

A

rash promise after too much bubbly at Trophy Wife’s birthday dinner party left me facing the problem of entertaining seven of us to a day out at the Formula One British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The sport’s mighty supremo and considerate kindheart, Bernie Ecclestone, a long-time friend, eased the getting-IN issue with a blessing of VIP passes. It was the getting-THERE that presented the next crucial mountain to climb. And here, at very short notice, Peugeot’s ever-patient and eager-to-please fleet organiser, Craig Morrow, kindly answered my pleas and came to my rescue with the loan of the perfect answer to the transport of my masses to the Midlands showpiece circuit. At his suggestion, it came in the ample shape of a seven-seater 5008 MPV, the company’s roomiest car, the perfect solution for a couple of hours’ drive in total comfort for all in a madcap dash up the motorways to the scene of my treat. Six footers me and my two mates and our five-feet-nothing wives were all equally comfy and cosy in a quite

posh, roomy and airy cabin, much more spacious than you would imagine when you walk up to the car, before stretching in its high seats with their commanding views. The third row of seats, generally a wee bit of a squeeze in rival motors to say the least, was a surprise of uncramped space and as practical as can be. Incidentally, as an aside of info, if you have a Trophy Wife like mine who empties her wardrobe into suitcases galore to go on holiday and wants to turn the car into a van with just two places up front, driver and passenger, all the other middle and back row seats can be removed. The whole of the latest, face-lifted 5008 is undergoing a rejuvenation process, leaving its outdated ancestors and their tighter space offerings and spartan style in the new offering’s airstream. It is both refined and practical and is generally an absolute cracker of a thoroughly pleasing family all-rounder that most certainly gives value for money in an MPV marketplace that abounds with rivals, some better, but not all of them as proficient and money-saving. Sure, the ride could be a little better, somewhat

less firm, as we all found on our trek to Silverstone, but I know Peugeot will be working on that, and it is a minor snag that will be resolved with their level of expertise as it is right now, with customer satisfaction high on their agenda. Regular readers who know all about my skinflint background will not be a bit surprised to hear my glee, and my absence of tut-tuts, at the fuel economics so generously served up by this smart-looking 5008. I would go for the 1.6HD diesel which I reckoned returned around 65 mpg on our dash up and down to the BGP - and for such a big car, loaded, that is an exceptional and blessed return for reluctant walletopeners like myself. Specification: Engine 1.6 BlueHDi Active. BHP 120.MPG 65.7. Speed 0-60 in 12.2secs. Top speed 114mph. Price £23,720.Warranty 3 years/60,000 miles.

For Your Eyes Only. My spies tell me that, behind the scenes and in strict secrecy, Peugeot has been redesigning and making an even smarter 5008 for a release next spring. Remember who told you....
