Welcome to October

Cobham Heritage Day was on Saturday 14th September this year. Many local businesses, schools and organisations turned out and provided great entertainment for so many visitors; vintage cars, Punch & Judy, May Pole Dancing, Campanology and Hand Bells too. Live music, dancing and of course, the ever popular Duck Race ! Phew, what a day, and the weather could not be faulted, sunshine galore! I hope you enjoy our photo coverage of this great day. We have a number of lovely local charities asking for help this month; Elmbridge CAN who give very much needed help to Syrian Refugee families are in need of volunteers. I don’t think OU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS BRILLIANTweAT ALOUD? can READING even begin to understand what these people have been through, but with the help and support of Elmbridge CAN their are beginning come together again. There are many t be someone in your family, your babysitter, a lives nursery nurse, toschool opportunities to help, so if you are able and willing please do see page to 30 for more details. It will make a huge difference to her or volunteer or anyone else you love listening reading aloud. so many. e to hear about them and what makes themAnother so good reading aloud. greatat local charity asking for help is Conquest Art; their aim is to inspire people with disabilities and long term illness through the medium of art. Volunteers don’t necessarily need to be arty, if you can spare just a few hours a week they would love to hear from you. The Amigo Project support individuals who are recovering from mental illness. By becoming a ‘buddy volunteer’ your support of a client could encourage involvement in community activities, to aid recovery. Give them a call if you can help. See page 43. Finally, MarieCurie are looking for volunteer fundraisers, an absolutely amazing charity who offer support at such difficult times. Maybe this is your calling? See page 44 for details. That’s it from me for now. Remember that the clocks will be going back on Sunday 27th October, so let’s all enjoy the last few weeks of light evenings in 2019. Conquest Art is a Charity, inspiring people with disabilities and long-term health issues to discover their creative energy and build self-confidence through art. Your few hours a week could make a real difference to people's lives. We are seeking volunteer helpers willing to support our Cobham art group held at The Cobham Centre, Oakdene Road, Cobham, KT11 2LY. From 10:00am to 12:00noon. Not every volunteer needs artistic ability, but you do need to be a ‘people person’ – enthusiastic, and ready to help create a friendly, welcoming environment where members feel relaxed and able to make the most of their time with us. As a volunteer you will be part of a team. A good team has a variety of different gifts from organising, being arty, good with money and making refreshments. Volunteers are the people who make Conquest Art possible. Could you join the team? Please contact us for more information and we can arrange for you to visit the group to see what the role involves and to meet the other volunteers and members. For further information please phone Tina on 020 3044 2731 email enquiries@conquestart.org or see our website www.conquestart.org

Book Reviews OCTOBER 2019

‘Once Upon a River’ by Diane Setterfield (Paperback £8.99) A fantastical, gothic tale set in Radcot near Oxford in 1887. It was the night of the winter solstice, a time when the local storytellers gathered to share their tales. A strange man stumbles into the Swan Inn on the river Thames. In his arms lies a small child, or is it a doll? The man is severely injured and the child appears to be dead, drowned in the river. When many hours later she revives, the magic and mystery of the situation evolve into the attempts to unravel the story behind that night’s events. An engrossing and enjoyable read.

‘The Overstory’ by Richard Powers (Paperback £8.99) At first the chapters of The Overstory tell of individual trees and the people whose lives are entwined with theirs. I expected the book would continue like this, with separate stories each feeling like a complete novel through the beauty of Powers’ storytelling. However characters begin to meet and change one another, still connected by trees as they fight to protect this treasure from destruction. A remarkable, profoundly moving novel and Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2019.

‘Olive Again’ by Elizabeth Strout (Hardback £14.99) I loved Olive Kitteridge and here she is again along with some other familiar characters. The chapters vary between Olive and other people connected to her in some way. Olive is now in her 70s and widowed. She is entirely unique and readers have a variety of reactions to her, mostly contradictory because she is. Elizabeth Strout is a wonderful writer and I savoured the rounding off of Olive’s life.

24 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

As children across the country return to the classroom, local schools are being encouraged to apply for up to £500 worth of free outdoor learning resources to allow youngsters to get hands on with nature. Applications for the Local School Nature Grants are open from now up until the 22nd November 2019 from the charity Learning through Landscapes, which is distributing £550,000 of funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, with funds being awarded from Postcode Local Trust. Through the programme, Learning through Landscapes wants to transform the way we currently think of outdoor education and show the learning and play potential that exists within all school grounds regardless of their setting and outdoor spaces, empowering teachers to be able to take the teaching of any curriculum subject outdoors. As well as receiving up to £500 worth of outdoor resources of their choosing, school staff will also receive a two-hour training session on how to get the most out of the equipment. The learning resources and the training sessions available are entirely customisable; meaning infant, primary and secondary schools can choose which items will best suit their learners and the setting that they will be delivered in. The programme is also open to special schools and pupil referral units. Applications are being actively encouraged from schools whose pupils are aged 5+ and are passionate about making environmental improvements for the benefit of their pupils, staff and the community. For more info & to apply for funding, please visit Learning through Landscapes’ website: www.ltl.org.uk/ projects/local-school-nature-grants

COBHAM HERITAGE DAY Saturday 14th September 2019

THERE’S NO SHAME S E F I K VI LLAS ANTE Sefik Viallasante is a Cobham resident. He is also a Life Coach, author and speaker who is passionate about breaking down the stigmas which are associated with Mental Health issues and with the pressures that we all face in day to day life. ‘I feel sure many of you have heard the 1 in 4 statistic being banded around regarding mental health problems; 4 years ago, I was simply one of these statistics. Things are slowly moving in a positive direction, World Suicide Prevention Day was on Sept 10th and World Mental Health day will soon be here, on 10th October, and there is a real focus, quite rightly, on talking about this subject far more openly. My book is based on my own experiences; I was a normal guy, deeply engrossed in the corporate world of Central London when I fell foul to the huge pressures this can bring. I suffered a total break down, resulting in an attempt to take my own life. My book, I know through my experience as a life coach, will resonate with so many people. I wanted talk openly about this subject, the stigmas and preconceptions and fears that people often face. Many suffer in silence and don't know where to turn or how to approach the subject. I feel sure that my book can really change lives and make a huge positive impact of others in this difficult position. ‘ If you would like to read Sefik’s book or you want to get hold of a copy for a freind you can find it at http:// sefikempowermentcoaching.co.uk/ Mr S Villasante

“I WAS AFRAID BEFORE. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. BUT EVERYTHING IS BETTER NOW.” Bana is 12. She likes to draw colourful pictures with her best friend, Jessica, at their school in East Molesey. Eight years ago, both girls had days that they would never forget. Jessica had her first day at school in East Molesey, UK. Bana had her last day at home in Aleppo, Syria. Jessica was nervous. Her parents were nervous for her. Would she make friends? She barely recognised herself in her new uniform. For Bana, there was no time to think. Her parents had no choice but to leave. The war in Syria had made it impossible to stay. From Syria to the UK In eight years of conflict, Syria has been in and out of the news. Interest, like sympathy, has risen and fallen. In that time, Bana’s family fled their home, travelled across the Syrian border, struggled to build a life in a refugee camp, were resettled to the UK, and had a chance to rebuild their lives. That Bana and her family were able to start a new life in England is thanks to a scheme announced by the UK Government in 2015 to resettle 20,000 refugees by 2020 and to the local councils that committed to taking families under this scheme. Resettlement offered safety, but not always stability, economic security, or emotional wellbeing. Elmbridge CAN

30 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

Elmbridge CAN was formed in 2016 out of a belief that the community could and should help. Our priority was to welcome families – collecting donations, furnishing homes and helping new Syrian families to settle in the UK. Muhammad came to the UK in 2014. “I was very happy when I was told I would be going to Britain,” he explains. “But I was also afraid. I thought - how I am going to do this?” “When I arrived, I came to a house with furniture, food, toys and clothes,” Muhammad told us. “I found a welcome card for me and my family. I felt like here, we could start again.” Since then, our work has expanded to providing weekly English lessons, employment support, and small grants to help families become independent. We have advocated for a more humane refugee policy, and welcomed five more families through the Government scheme and supported countless others in our community. We have mobilised a team of committed volunteers, and held monthly events with our new Syrian neighbours. Like Bana and Jessica, we have come a long way in the last few years – but we still have a lot of work to do. To find out how you can help, please go to our website, www.elmbridgecan.org.uk

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

Gardening Matters CUTTINGS

And now for my next trick… cuttings. Softwood, semiripe, hardwood, oh the fun. Cuttings produce genetically-identical plants, handy for varieties that revert, for example. They’re also quicker than seed, so all good. Success is almost guaranteed if you follow the basics at the right time of year, although I break the rules regularly with almost equal success, especially in our weird weather these days, so don’t angst too much. Softwood cuttings - abelia, acer, campanula, fuchsias - generally root quickly in summer, but are more susceptible to wilting. Choose young, healthy, firm growth, fill pots with a 50/50 mix of compost and sharp sand/gravel, cut pieces 2-4 ins long and remove the lower leaves to about ½ way up. Dip the ends in powdered rooting hormone to improve the success rate, insert into the compost, firm gently, water thoroughly and put in a moist, close atmosphere. Cuttings can live happily on a windowsill in a room with good light, but not strong midday sun. Maintain humidity with a poly bag or 2L plastic bottle, cut in half to fit closely over the pot. Check daily, misting them if they’re flagging. Moisture on leaves and stems helps them recover from wilting until they generate new root systems. Don’t water the compost again until it’s drying out. Once established, carefully separate the root mass and pot up. Easy peasy. Semi-ripe cuttings - rhododendron, ceanothus, berberis, escallonia - are pieces of growth 3-4 ins long

that aren’t yet fully mature. They’re hardening at the base, still flexible further up and are taken from July end of September, either cleanly below a bud or with a ‘heel’, a thin sliver of bark and wood from the old stem. The more mature the shoot, the longer it’ll take to root. They too need humid conditions, hormone powder, a 50/50 mix and shade when too bright. Once rooted, leave undisturbed till spring. Then remove the rooted cutting carefully under cool conditions, spreading the roots as you pot up. Hardwood cuttings - forsythia, honeysuckle, willow, laurel - are dormant, woody, pencil-thick stems, 1 season old. They’re taken at the end of the season and root successfully in soft, light soil in the open. Choose a weed-free, well-drained spot, sheltered from winds. Take cuttings 10-12 ins long, remove the soft tips and cut off above the uppermost bud and below the bottom bud, leaving 3-4 leaves on evergreens and semi-evergreens. Dig a V-shaped trench, sprinkling a layer of sharp sand in the bottom to help drainage and encourage rooting. Dip them in rooting hormone and plant to about ¾ of their length, a few inches apart. Replace the soil in the trench as you go, treading down the surface to firm in. Leave in position till rooted, which may be several months. Then either line them out in short row beds or pot up into containers. Hmm, a bit of a gallop through cuttings, but go on, give it a try. You know you want to.

COBHAM CEDAR CLUB W.I. From Anne Yeates

October Report Were we barking mad? On July 25, the day Britain recorded its highest-ever temperature and advice was to stay at home, we went on an outing. It turned out to be a brilliant decision. On the way to Walmer Castle and Deal on the Kent coast we had an air-conditioned bus, cool sea breezes when we got there, and in all a great day out at the seaside. Walmer Castle is well worth a visit at any time of year – built by Henry VIII as a fort it evolved into a stately home for the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports, including the Duke of Wellington and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The former died there (you can see his campaign bed, which he preferred even after battle, as well as his famous boots) and the latter has a magnificent garden in her memory. So what next? Inspired by Walmer, in October we are off to Apsley House, by Marble Arch, home of the Dukes of Wellington. It is otherwise known as No 1 London, which has to be the most stylish address ever. In October our meeting will hear Tim Flesher, former Private Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs, on Mrs Thatcher and Me, just in case we have not had enough politics recently. Visitors are always welcome - see www.cobhamcedarclubwi.uk.

sticky sausage & mustard rolls ingredients method 1 tbsp olive oil 2 red onions, cut into wedges 3 thyme sprigs 6 Heck British 97% Pork Sausages 150ml dry cider 1 tsp clear honey 1 heaped tbsp English mustard 4 ciabatta rolls 1 heaped tbsp dijonnaise 1 tsp lemon juice ½ small red cabbage (about 300g), finely shredded (Serves 4)

1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or casserole over a medium heat and add the onions, thyme and sausages. Fry for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Pour in the cider and add the honey and mustard. Simmer, stirring regularly, for 10-15 minutes until the sauce is sticky and reduced, and the sausages are cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, put the ciabatta rolls in the oven to warm for 10 minutes while you make the slaw. Mix the dijonnaise, lemon juice and 1 tsp water in the base of a mixing bowl, then add the red cabbage and toss through to dress. 3. Halve the sausages lengthways (otherwise they’ll fall out of the rolls). Split open the rolls and fill each with 3 sausage halves and a heap of slaw, with extra on the side.

The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7

On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 2 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.

What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

Porsche Cayman T CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

In bygone days, when rashness, flash and show-off were my middle names I owned...successively...a Sunbeam Talbot 90, three E-type Jaguars, a Mercedes sports and a scarlet Lamborghini Espada. Then I grew up and awoke to a sense of responsibility which took the fine form of a Porsche Cayman, in my humble opinion the greatest value for money sports car that has ever been the temptation for the more monied among us, or the not so well-heeled, to want to be seen driving. It is driven by Trophy Wife much more often than me and she loves it. No wonder. It does exactly what she tells it to do. A bit like me! Whatever mood any driver finds themselves in, reflected in the right foot, the Cayman’s response is instant whether to be docile or daring, snail pace or involved in motorway top speeds. And it is equally at ease whether dashing at an M-way rate of knots or lingering idly along twisty and narrow country lanes, evidenced lately by a journey of the Macauley-twosome to deepest Cornwall, that give the car such an agreeable response, we would not swop it...except for another one!! The latest has just come on the market, the Cayman T, an extension of the fine and desirable reputation this brand of Porsche has developed. Among the mass of so-called super and sports cars, this newest and freshest challenger has just about everything even the fussiest of owners could want...speed and comfort, all in absolute safety. It zooms from zero-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and,

if our authorities allowed it, would roar onto the 170mph mark. Phew! You can feel chuffed just sitting on that potential. You know the stunning acceleration is there at the merest pressure on the pedal if needs be. The up-to-date sports car market is bursting with ranks of rivals and hot shots like the Alpine A110 Pure or the Toyota GR Supra Pro which loom large but Porsche have honed their challenger...nay...leader...to the finest of levels and performance with economy to satisfy the most tight-fisted, like me, in our midst. The so-called add-ons that can boost the price to £67,000 are to my mind not such a good idea or value when they are not really necessary. So, what makes the now-lighter Cayman with its sportier chassis such a genuine treat? It is mid-engined and superbly balanced. In my opinion just about the finest handling car on the highways and byways scene. It goes around corners with a focus on the challenge that is laser-like. The weighty steering, its mightly powerful and effective brakes, all combine to fill whomsoever is behind the wheel with utter and complete confidence in this compact offering of motoring perfection. As an all rounder, lolly-wise and good looking without being OTT, the five-star Cayman is a real beaut - and the latest edition merely serves to underpin its already matured assets. Specification: Porsche Cayman T. Top speed 170mph. Mpg 32.8. 0-62 in 4.7 secs. Price£54,358.
