Over decades I have revelled in the smart company, comfort and convenience of the Mercedes brand of memorable motors - and not for a single second have I endured the slightest setback in my admiration for the efforts of its gifted German engineers and designers. I have owned, borrowed, rented, been chauffeured, and tested, here and just about everywhere abroad, in all manner of conditions, both weather and road, and benefitted from every mile of my journeys. And that is why it would be seriously remiss of me now, not to cite the latest newcomer, as a thoroughly deserving prize winner... with the Mercedes Benz-S class awarded unique and universal recognition as the world’s number one luxury saloon. Motoring writers and experts from 28 countries who decide on the world’s finest car awards piled in to give it their full support in a hotly contested market. I was not invited to join in - do I hear your cry “Shame”?!! - but, I would have voted it a welldeserved winner too. It is the fourth, world luxury car triumph, for

Mercedes-Benz and the second time the S-Class has clinched the title in the 17-year history of the prestigious and treasured annual car awards ceremony. The top three short listed cars, chosen from around the globe, were the Land Rover Defender and the Polestar 2, as well as the eventual and well deserved winner, Mercedes-S .... Little wonder the head of S-class and C-class development, Professor Uwe Ernstberger said proudly: “Our car offers trailblazing and innovative success in all areas from safety to sheer comfort and reliable efficiency”. I could not agree more.... So what do you get for your hard-earned? My choice is the stylish S350d L Grand Edition. It returns a respectable 44.1 mpg. It moves from standstill to 62 mph in about 8 seconds. Its handling is sharp with infotainment and sheer comfort aplenty. The asking price is £79,415 - but haggle hard and I would bet you could knock at least £10,000 off that? Go for it...
