From the EDITOR

Welcome to Look Local in March! Mothers’ Day is just around the corner and Easter is at the end of the month, so maybe some family time for many of us too? There is plenty going on locally to fill our pages, and we are delighted to bring you news from many local groups and organisations. We include updates about a special ‘Mayor’s Charity Concert’ and a great looking food fair event coming soon at Garson’s Farm in March. See inside for details on both. I was contacted recently by a local resident, Zain Sheikh. Zain lives in Esher and travels daily to school in London; he shares an interesting insight into the thoughts and impressions of others about living in Esher and his daily commute. Thank you for your contribution, Zain. I am sure it will be read with interest and enjoyed by many. Our February front cover generated some interest, a kissing couple statue for a Valentine’s theme. For anyone who is interested, this statue is located in Sarasota, Florida, but I also had a call from a gentleman in Weybridge who said he had seen a version of the same at an Italian port when he was on a cruise, so maybe there are several of them. It is based on a famous photograph taken in Times Square by a gentleman called Alfred Eisenstaedt in 1945, minutes after news broke of Japan’s surrender to the US. His iconic black and white photograph then appeared on the front cover of LIFE magazine. It seems to be a ‘Marmite’ image... you either love it or hate it. The lady in the white dress came forward a while after the photo was widely publicised, but the identity of the sailor has always been a little ambiguous: several sailors claimed it was them, but the true identity has never been confirmed. Anyway, we simply liked the the statue and thought it provided a striking front cover for the month of love. This month’s cover is a less historic image, but pretty all the same, I hope you agree. Wishing you a great month, until next time,

SURBURBAN I am a 17 year old who has lived in Esher for most of his life. Having gone to prep school in Surbiton, I was always told how lucky I was to live in Esher, which was only mentioned in a positive light and always a place friends wanted to visit. If it was all about ‘location, location, location’, then I was indeed winning. At 13 however, I started going to school in London and was at this point completely oblivious to the fact the average London schoolboy did not have the faintest idea where Esher was. In fact, in the first week, I heard so many various attempts to pronounce Esher that you would have thought it was a suburb of New Delhi, rather than a 10 minute drive from the most southerly tube stop. You should have seen their faces when I told them it wasn’t in the Oyster zone! Anyway, despite me trying to explain how I could still be at their houses in Central London in 30 minutes and Finchley Road

12 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

in 45 minutes while using one of those ‘orangey ticket things that you get from the machine’, Esher might as well have been in Southampton. Before I go on, I should say that I am a big fan of London and was even inspired to write to our local MP to include Esher in the Oyster zone (for some reason it didn’t happen). Having been to many countries, I would still class it as the greatest city in the world and enjoy both going to school and going out with friends in the city. Also, contrary to popular belief, for our friends north of Surbiton, the commute isn’t that bad either, as 50 minutes on the train door to door to Barnes has now become 35 minutes in the car. It has always bemused me how boundaries created by TFL, namely the Oyster zone, seem to decide people’s opinions on what is ‘accessible’, leaving Thames Ditton in and Esher out, which is a meagre difference of 1.4

MYTHS miles. Despite my protestations, it has not stopped the playful jibes of friends asking me how I’m enjoying tending to my cattle or whether I’ve used my new combine harvester. Yet the debate of the city versus the proverbial countryside goes deeper than just transport. Just like when my friends from the city were shocked when they discovered Oyster cards had no home in Esher, they were equally concerned when I disclosed the fact I knew my neighbours and talked to them on a relatively frequent basis and we had even created a back door for easier access. The horror! Esher not only allowed me space growing up but is also an amicable, sociable place, where people from all ages are always ready to say hello and smile. I love the ability to talk to the local station guard about both the maligned fortunes of the England cricket team and advice on university

(credit to Barry who is both a great conversationalist and always ready to help.) Since we are talking about the positives of Esher, as I’m going to study geography, I feel compelled to mention the better air quality too. Having finally convinced a friend to come down, he declared solemnly that Esher was actually quite a ‘nice place’ and ‘very hospitable.’ I did feel rather vindicated. It’s about time we tell Londoners it really ain’t that bad all the way ‘down south.’ All in all, my point is not to call out Londoners or diminish the importance of being better connected in an affordable way: it is merely to suggest that travel zones don’t change geography or distance in reality. Even so, if it means having the chance to live where people walk down the street smiling, we should not mind having to forego a bit of distance. We should be proud of the town we call home. ASK BRUCE

EASTER EGG ADVICE

Look Local reader Emma asks why mustn’t dogs eat Easter eggs and what should you do if they do? Human chocolate is poisonous to dogs. It contains theobromine which is a chemical that is toxic to them. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous, as it contains higher levels of theobromine than milk chocolate. However, both should be avoided. Prevention, as always, is better than cure. But if you do find your dog has helped themself, you must take immediate action. Digesting the chocolate can cause them to fit and can lead to heart issues. Call your vet immediately to get advice if your dog does eat chocolate. Better still, stop them from stealing your Easter eggs by buying them their own. There are lots of pet websites offering doggy Easter eggs which are made with carob, a dog-friendly alternative to chocolate. And some are even peanut butter and yoghurt flavoured, so the chances are they will prefer them to yours! Whatever you get up to this Easter, enjoy the break and some well-earned time with your four-legged friends. Windows update DATA BACKUP AND

01372 370300

sales@tecres.co.uk

www.tecres.co.uk

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tec Res in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Windows Update system has been a focus for us over this month. We have seen a problem caused to machines which were originally Windows 7 or Windows 8 and which took the Windows 10 update as an upgrade. As a part of the Windows Update process, some important files are downloaded to a hidden partition on your PC’s hard drive. However, the new downloaded files are larger than the available space on the hidden partition on the hard drive. The solution for this is not an easy one, as it involves resizing all the partitions available on the C drive. This is not something that the average user can do: there is a possibility that the resizing will fail, rendering your machine not bootable, with major access issues to your data. Although it doesn’t address this problem, there are ways that you can control some of your Windows updates by going to your Start button, then to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for Updates. We would always encourage you to take the latest

20 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

Windows updates, as this ensures you are kept secure. Data Backup We can’t stress enough the importance of data backup, and we provide automatic cloud data backup as a part of our Total Care Support package. If you would prefer to make your own backup arrangements, Windows 10 has a very easy-to-use feature called File History. This is a continuous backup program which copies your data to an external drive from your data libraries, desktop and contacts folder. Once it has created a master backup, it copies changed data every hour (by default) to your external drive. It is fast and effective, and our only recommendation once you have created a backup is not to leave the backup drive adjacent to your computer: both devices would be impacted in the same way in the event of a fire or flood, so keep your backup drive elsewhere. You can back up on to a memory stick or an external hard drive, the costs of which range from £8.00 and upwards from there.

Water features DESIGNS FOR

ALL SEASONS

Selina Botham - 07894 553 202 or visit us online at www.designsforallseasons.co.uk A water feature can be used for many reasons in a garden design. Water can be used to create the ‘wow’ that your garden needs and it can give the soothing sound and sparkle of moving water. There is something very engaging about water when it is used effectively in a garden. Siting your water feature. It’s best to avoid somewhere where leaves will be constantly dropping. Make sure your pond is visible from the house or from a key part of your garden, so that you will be able to make the most of it. Maintenance. Would you enjoy tending a pond and fishing out leaves and generally keeping it tidy or do you have a gardener who can do this work for you? Every water feature will need some looking after, so this is worth considering. Scale. As in every aspect of garden design, scale and proportion are vital, so be generous in your proportions. Avoid the ‘overflowing pot’ type feature, as these are very hard to maintain and invariably too small for even a tiny garden. Safety. Take care that you won’t trip and fall into your pond. If you want it close to doors or a route, then a slightly raised edge will help to make it obvious. If you have small children, safety bars are essential, or have your pond in a separate gated area of the garden. Choose the style which is right for you. Will it be ecofriendly or clean tidy and neat? Do you want a raised self-contained feature or a low level pond, or even a lake? Rocks are making a comeback, fashion-wise, and so I have recently been designing craggy ponds with waterfalls over rocks. A formal pond or rill can be used to draw the eye and

22 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

take you up or down, so they can be used to emphasise an interesting level change in a garden. A square pond, either at ground level or raised, can make a wonderful central feature in a garden. If you want a formal look and you want to use chemicals to keep it clean, it is often a good idea to raise the edges so that it’s harder for newts or frogs to jump in. Always build in a ramp or a way out for creatures. A self -ontained sculptural water bowl can look lovely and is a relatively easy way to bring water into the garden, particularly if you are happy to enjoy a peaceful reflecting pond. A wildlife pond will attract a huge variety of insects and birds, not to mention newts and frogs which arrive. Wonderful for the local ecosystem, as long as you get the plant cover and position right and can keep duckweed at bay. High maintenance though, in my experience, although I do value the wildlife greatly. If you want to keep fish, the pond must have a pump and filtration system so that the fish get enough oxygen. A trip wire can be installed around the edge to put herons off eating your fish. Whatever your preferences, with good design, a pond can bring life, shimmering reflections and relaxing sounds to your garden. If you’d like to see some garden transformations, see our Facebook page Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons or follow us on Instagram @designsforallseasons If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our website for further ideas www. designsforallseasons.co.uk

Ingredients 6 pig’s cheeks, about 400g, or alternatively try 500g essential Waitrose Pork Belly Joint (see below) Seasoned flour 1 tbsp olive oil 75ml dark soy sauce 100g clear honey 300ml Cooks’ Ingredients Chicken Stock 4-5 star anise 20ml Cooks’ Ingredients Chinese Rice Vinegar 4 Canadian roeless scallops 10g butter 25g Waitrose pea tops

Method

Preheat the oven to 150ºC, Gas Mark 2. Coat the pig’s cheeks in seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish on the hob, add the pig’s cheeks and cook for for 1–2 minutes until browned. Add the soy sauce, honey, stock, star anise and rice vinegar. Cover and bake in the oven for about 3 hours until the pork is tender and falling apart. Just before the pork is done, sear the 4 scallops in the butter in a small frying pan for 2–3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. To serve, place the pig’s cheeks together in the centre of 2 plates, top with a handful of pea tops and 2 scallops, then lightly drizzle with some of the cooking liquid.

Variation

Instead of pig’s cheeks, this dish works just as well with an essential Waitrose Pork Belly Joint (about 500g). Place the joint, skin side up, into an ovenproof dish. Drizzle with oil, season and roast in a preheated oven (200 degrees centigrade, gas mark 7) for 20–30 minutes, until the skin is crispy. Reduce the heat to 150 degrees centigrade, gas mark 2. Add the soy sauce, honey, stock, star anise and rice vinegar, then cover and bake for 3 hours, until the pork is meltingly tender.

Mazda MX

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

The first rays of spring sunshine, hopefully heralding a tanning summer, spotlight the desirability of fresh-air jaunts in an open top motor. And here I cite the bliss of being able to do it in a tiny treasure of transport, namely the petite Mazda MX5, a four wheel joy, the car that accounts for half of all its UK sales right across Europe. Despite our changeable weather, the UK is the largest market for convertibles and the heralded Mazda reigns supreme. And here’s a reminder for comparison: the rival Lotus Elise is priced £6,000 more than this eager beaver of Japanese automotive genius and invention. The two-seater is also recognised as the world’s best selling sports car, as revealed in the Guinness World Record books. And that to me is no surprise whatsoever: it is a double-deal benefit, being a fun car in which to revel and a real bargain buy. Inside it is cosy and close-fitting and its performance from its front engine is eager and responsive, with a sharp manual gear change ability that gets the most out of its six speed box. And I must confess the entry level MX5 1.5-litre job, with its short shift perfection, is every bit as delightful a treat to drive as the pricier 2.0-litre rangetopper.A show-off weekend in the Lake District, with its testingly variable winding lanes and roads, climbs and

32 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

descents, underlined the Mazda’s eagerness to please. Its road-holding and two wheel drive fill you with confidence, and at the same time, urge you to have fun and thrills in complete safety. And with the hood down, despite a typically around-Windermere nippy atmosphere, the cocooned cosiness was complete, with no intrusive draught for either me or a warmth-seeking Trophy Wife to moan about. If needs be, and if you get caught out by shower, you can up the hood on the go in five seconds. Like everything else with this desirable third-generation cabrio, the designers have been painstaking in ensuring its tradition and reputation remain firmly intact. In its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, it emerged as the spiritual successor to the British sports cars of the Fifties and Sixties…the Triumph Spitfire, Austin Healey 100, MGA and Lotus Elan. And it has never looked back, outlasting and overtaking the lot. In America, it is dubbed the ‘Miata’…an old German word for ‘reward’. How true…. Specification: Engine 1.5-litre 131 BHP SE: MPG 47.1, Speed 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Price £18,795. Warranty three years, 60,000 miles.

Garsons Farm TV PERSONALITY

TO LAUNCH SPRING FOOD FAIR

Flavour guru Pritesh Mody of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch fame will be bringing the `zing’ to the first spring food fair taking place at Garsons of Esher on the weekend of March 24 and 25. The upcoming TV personality and charismatic owner of World of Zing is the farm shop’s newest supplier and will be officially opening the food fair which promises to showcase gourmet goodies and Easter treats. Food lovers can enjoy tastings of quality food and drink and the chance to meet the makers who supply Garsons Farm Shop all year round. Tastings will include locally-made hot cross buns, seasonal cakes and chocolate. Among the many mouth-watering treats will be a selection of regional and continental cheeses from Leopard Dairy, vegan superfoods from Creative Nature, cakes from Crosbies, fresh sauces from the Taste Collectiv and Norman Hunt Cider. Dorset Spice Shed are back with their dish-enhancing range of seasonings and spices, and World of Zing will

make its debut with its chillies, herbs, spices, table sauces and range of ready-to-drink cocktails. Garsons will be kicking off the barbecue season early, so visitors can sample traditional pork sausages from Bevan’s Butchery, hot off the coals. And for those planning an Easter Sunday feast, the butchers will be taking orders for locally-reared freerange turkey and legs of Scottish lamb. “We thought there couldn’t be a better way to mark the start of spring than to have a food fair,” said Nigel Chandler, Farm Shop manager. “From our summer and Christmas food fairs, we know people love to meet the suppliers and artisan producers and chat about the food and drink they are tasting. It gives them the chance to try something new and provide lots of fresh ideas for home cooking.” The spring food fair is free to enter and will be open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday. UB40

FEATURING ALI, ASTRO & MICKEY

‘A REAL LABOUR OF LOVE’ THE NEW ALBUM RELEASED MARCH 2ND ON UMC Pre-order link is https://ub40.lnk.to/ARLOL ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ is the new album from UB40, featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey, to be released March 2nd on UMC. Lead single ‘She Loves Me Now’ received its exclusive first play today on BBC Radio 2 and will be available tomorrow to stream and download as an instant grat with album pre-orders. As founding members of Britain’s biggest reggae band UB40, singer Ali Campbell, second vocalist Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue topped the UK singles chart on three occasions and sold 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe. Now with ‘A Real Labour Of Love’, the trio give us a fresh take on the legendary series of albums, putting the focus primarily on reggae tracks from the 1980s. “The first three albums featured the songs we grew up listening to,” says Ali. “This one is built around the records we were listening to once UB40 were on the road.” Between 1983 and 1998, UB40 produced three ‘Labour Of Love’ albums, bringing hits such as Eric Donaldson’s ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, Lord Creator’s ‘Kingston Town’ and Johnny Osbourne’s ‘Come Back Darling’ to a new, global audience. They also topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with their reggae cover of Neil Diamond’s ‘Red Red Wine’.

34 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

And now 20 years later, Ali, Astro and Mickey are revitalising the concept by exploring the tunes of a later golden age. ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ sees the group explore the songs that defined reggae in the Eighties. The concept isn’t a rigid one: Stevie Wonder’s ‘A Place In The Sun’ is a Motown classic from 1966, and there are numbers from the late Seventies in Dennis Brown’s sublime ‘How Could I Leave’ and Culture’s ‘International Herb’. But most of the tracks on ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ are from the Eighties, a decade that saw dancehall reggae enter the mainstream. “We were spending more time in Jamaica and some of these numbers are the ones we’d hear on the radio and out in the streets,” says Astro. “The singers of these songs were our heroes. They are quintessential reggae artists.” The new album builds confidently on the momentum gathered in the five years since Astro rejoined singer Ali and keyboardist Mickey in 2013. They have released two acclaimed albums, ‘Silhouette’ (2014) and ‘Unplugged’ (2016), their first acoustic album and their first release with new label UMC. Recorded and mixed at Dean Street and RAK Studios, ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ was produced by Ali, whose instantly recognisable voice is augmented by the ‘singjay’ vocal style of Astro. The latter takes the lead on

six of the album’s 16 tracks, placing the two singers at the helm of an 11-piece band. Sadly, ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ also marks the passing of long-serving trombonist John Johnson. A former member of Simply Red who joined forces with Ali seven years ago, John played on the album but passed away the night before the rest of the group were due to play a benefit concert to raise money for his cancer treatment. The album is dedicated to him. The unique artwork for ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ by celebrated American contemporary artist Mark T Smith was specially commissioned for the release. A first edition print, signed by the artist and the band, is being auctioned with proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust, details to follow soon. The group is now looking forward to taking their new album on the road, with UK festival appearances lined up for the summer and a UK arena tour in the pipeline for 2019. Given the massive success of the trio’s last ‘Labour Of Love’ outing, a 2016 tour that featured sold-out shows at the O2 Arena in London and the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, there is bound to be a huge appetite for ‘A Real Labour Of Love’. “The reaction to that tour was fantastic, and every show was a sell-out,” says Ali. “Now we’re ready to do it all

again. We knew most of these songs back to front before we began recording A Real Labour Of Love, so the challenge was to make them our own, rather than copying the originals.” ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ Track Listing: 1.
