Welcome to our festive issue of Look Local ! Every year it’s the same, December creeps up on me and bang, another year is nearly over. Welcome to our festive issue of Look Local in Esher. Having enjoyed a mild autumn, it’s been a bit of a shock to feel the biting cold on my early morning dog walks recently; hats and gloves have found their way out of the drawer and Jack Frost has started to appear again, although he comes and goes, it seems. He obviously has other commitments, but that suits me fine! We are happy to share a selection of festive delights within our pages this month, one such event ‘A Christmas Cabaret’ brought to us care of The Claygate Dramatic Society. This sounds like a fun evening! See page 13 for details. We are also delighted to share coverage from a very successful evening spent playing bridge at a local café. Turns out that this is a popular pastime! Included also is a music quiz from the lovely David ‘Kid’ Jensen and a book competition kindly provided by Ted Macauley, our Look Local motoring expert. These are just some of the events and news you will find within our pages this month. I do hope you find it helpful and that there is something you will enjoy. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2018. On a personal note, I am looking forward to welcoming my three sons from far and wide, Asia, Leeds and Reigate in fact! I can’t wait to have my gang back together for Christmas. We look forward to bringing you more issues of Look Local in the year ahead. Warmest regards,
Ros

Project Wenceslas RETURNS
This is a special appeal to readers of this journal to help others less well off than themselves.
If you receive the fuel allowance from the Department of Work and Pensions of £100 annually in November, please would you consider donating the sum to Project Wenceslas, organised by the Leatherhead Lions Club? The money received is ring-fenced for the single purpose of of assisting those people who have difficultly in paying their gas and electricity bills. The Citizens Advice Bureau monitors applications for funding, and claims are usually paid in the form of credits on prepayment meter cards. Over the last four years, the Lions have helped over 100 clients to the tune of £22,000 in settling fuel bills.
It’s not just the elderly who ask for help, it’s all ages at all levels of society, and as long as the price of fuel remains high, the problem is not going to go away. Your donation will be safe with the Lions and will be fairly distributed to those in need. So, just like the poem of Good King Wenceslas helping the poor man, be a “Wenceslas” yourself: it’s going to be a cold winter, so they say, so don’t let others suffer from lack of heating. Please complete the coupon or follow the Just Giving instructions of www.leatherheadlions.org.uk All donations will be acknowledged.

ASK BRUCE HOME ALONE
Look Local reader Mark has a two-year-old German wire haired pointer who hates being left alone. This doesn’t happen often, as Mark takes him to work every day, but on the odd occasion when he has to leave him, the dog becomes anxious and cries. Mark asks what can we do to help him and is a second companion dog the answer? Ultimately, this is a complex issue, and an experienced dog behaviourist is needed. Just like people, all dogs are individuals, which means their psychological needs should be assessed on a dog-by-dog basis. Your first step is to understand the root cause behind your dog’s separation anxiety and address it. Spending time establishing a cosy familiar den in the form of a dog crate can also help. Then, when you leave the house, he can enjoy being in a smaller much-loved space, rather than alone in an empty house which can feel daunting. If he isn’t currently used to a crate, this exercise should be undertaken slowly and over time, as he must not feel caged. Medication is available to assist but should be a secondary option once the behavioural issues are dealt with. A companion dog is definitely not the answer. The first dog may make the second dog anxious and you could end up with two distressed dogs! This is a tough one to tackle on your own. Feel free to contact us and we can recommend some excellent trainers experienced in dog anxiety who could help. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Esher. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce about? Send your questions to :-

If you are mostly free the last Tuesday afternoon each month, why not come along to one of our Civil Service Pensioners’ Alliance meetings and be brought up to date with national and local issues which may be affecting you, and let us know what you think should be done! You will be most welcome. Following the formal discussion, we indulge in a welcome “cuppa” and biscuits before introducing the speaker for the month, usually on a range of very sociable subjects: for instance, the attached photo shows our last speaker talking to us about his travels on a recumbent bike in 2014 “Laid Back around the World in 180 days”. On 28th November, our speaker will be describing It’s a Wonderful Life [the Christmas fantasy comedy drama film]. Then, instead of our usual monthly meeting in December, we have arranged our regular annual get-together for Christmas lunch at the Sorrento Restaurant in Tolworth Broadway.

The Lightbox MARCEL RONANY’S ART: TRANQUILITY & STABILITY AFTER TWO WORLD WARS
3rd February 2018 - 11th March 2018
The Lightbox gallery and museum will be hosting a second exhibition celebrating the works of Marcel Ronay in the 1940s and 1950s, loaned almost exclusively from the Surrey-based Marcel Ronay Archive. Born in Hungary in 1910, Ronay was a son of a Romanian Jewish father and an aristocratic Catholic mother. Ronay’s personal and artistic journey saw him emigrate through Hungary, Germany and Austria (during WW1) before finally settling in England in 1936 where his family set up residence. ‘Marcel Ronay’s Art: Tranquillity and Stability after two World Wars’ will showcase works created in England in the 1940s and the 1950s. Marcel Ronay’s pastoral and bucolic images reflect his personal contentment in England which followed after meeting his wife and having a family. This exhibition is in stark contrast to the first show ‘The Art of Marcel Ronay’ hosted at The Lightbox in 2014,
16 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2017
featuring Ronay’s ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’ work, illustrating corruption, eroticism, hedonism and the demoralisation of life in Vienna in the wake of the First World War. In this exhibition, visitors will be inspired by colourful seascapes, riverscapes, urban scenes and forest landscapes, including locations such as St Peter’s Church, St Peter’s Square, Hammersmith Bridge, Strand-on-the–Green, Chiswick, Godalming, plus several works created in Windsor Forest and Wales. Ronay explored various types of media, displaying a wide range of creative application, including works in plaster, wood, terracotta, charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, woodprint, pastel and watercolour. ‘Marcel Ronay’s Art: Tranquillity and Stability after two World Wars’ will be open from 3 February 2018 – 11 March 2018 in the Art Fund Prize Gallery. Cafe Bridge Event COMES TO ESHER! Website: https://www.brianbridge.net/cafe
Esher’s pavements and restaurants came alive on Monday 16 October as it hosted its first ever Café Bridge event! Over 240 players from all around the area descended on Esher to enjoy duplicate bridge throughout the day in some of its wonderful restaurants. Putting on an event of this nature, which was held in aid of Princess Alice Hospice, requires a huge amount of goodwill, and local restaurants and businesses demonstrated this in spades. Participating restaurants were The Bear, Castello, Giggling Squid, Layla, Henry’s Grill, Zizzi, Pizza Express, Cote and The Wheatsheaf. A raffle was held in The Bear, with over 100 fabulous gifts generously donated by many local businesses, including a Fourball at Burhill Golf Club. The whole day was a great success, and a grand total of £ 4,744.86 was raised for Princess Alice Hospice from the bridge

ticket sales and the raffle. Café Bridge is a unique style of bridge, a concept devised on the continent, and it is taking off in the London area. Events of this scale are enabled by our phone app-based scoring system “BriAn”, which accumulates results from all the restaurants and allows players to follow their position in real time. The organisers, Louise Pilcher, Jenny Parsons, Philippa Freeman and Jackie Waller, together with a small army of local volunteers, are delighted to have introduced Café Bridge so successfully to players from near and far and showing Esher at its best! Garsons Farm COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS WITH ARRIVAL OF SANTA’S REAL REINDEER
Garsons, Winterdown Road, West End, Esher KT10 8LS | www.garsons.co.uk
Preparations are already underway at Garsons of Esher for some very special festive guests: a pair of real reindeer who will take up residence at the garden centre from Saturday 25 November. Animal lovers will have the opportunity to meet the reindeer every day until Christmas Eve, when they will go to help Santa with some very important deliveries. “It’s a very exciting time at Garsons as we build up to the festive season and we especially look forward to the arrival of our furry friends each year – we all grow quite attached to them,” says Ben Thompson, director at Garsons. “We love being able to spread a little magic at Christmas, and a glimpse of these very special animals is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. We can’t wait to welcome everyone.” As well as designing and building a custom enclosure and stables to keep the reindeer comfortable, Garsons will also recruit and train dedicated ‘reindeer helpers’ who will care for the animals during their stay. “Our top priority is always to make sure that our reindeer are happy and healthy while they’re with us, so a lot of work goes into giving them plenty of exercise, space to move around and the right nutrients,” Ben explains. “In their enclosure, they can have room to relax away from people if
they want to, but they are very inquisitive creatures and love poking their noses through the fence to meet visitors!” The annual reindeer visit to Garsons has not only become a popular event on the Christmas calendar, but has also helped the family-run business raise thousands of pounds for a different local charity each year. While there is no charge to see the reindeer, visitors are encouraged to give their spare change in collection buckets at the enclosure. Donations in 2016 totalled nearly £3,000 and went to help Carer Support Elmbridge continue their vital work with unpaid carers in the borough. This year’s nominated charity is Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust, set up by local mum Lydia Bate who lost her son Fabian to leukaemia in 2014 when he was just 12 years old. The Trust established in his name provides overnight goody bags to parents of children receiving cancer treatment, supports research into childhood cancers and organises memorable days out for children with cancer. Information: open from Saturday 25 November 2017 to Sunday 24 December 2017. Opening times: 10am - 5pm Monday to Saturday, 11am - 5pm Sunday, 10am - 1pm Christmas Eve

Competition Time THE STORY OF THE CAR BY GILES CHAPMAN Once in a while, but nowhere near frequently enough, there appears on the shelves a book to captivate both the senior and junior members of the family equally, like a tasty verbal treat to be relished. And that has welcomely happened with a rather splendid and superbly written and illustrated hardback of no mean size, entitled: “The Story of the Car”, priced at £12.99 and written by veteran motoring journalist and broadcaster Giles Chapman, the author of 40 books. It is a fascinatingly total trace of our private transport, our pride and joy, from its lifechanging inception 140 years ago up to the present day, pinpointing the developments from scary steam-powered slow-crawlers to the sleek iconic electric and flash flyers of nowadays, giving us the latest treats, comforts and excitement on the move.
Track down the traffic jam from legendary Benz’s first motor wagon to the jet-propelled cutting-edge Thrust SSC… Sheer petrol heads and even the mildly curious will share the coffee-table-topper’s excellent and unfussy, uncomplicated and impressively illustrated offering that I forecast will be a firm favourite, a deserved success for awardwinner Mr Chapman. I have appreciated its company and unrivalled supply of revealing info and history, and would like to pass it all on as a prize to a family as eager to enjoy as I have been.
So my prize winning question:

Surrey Voices SHINE IN VALETTA, MALTA
195 members of three local choirs travel to take part in the 23rd International Choir Festival
Surrey was well represented in Malta last week, as three local choirs travelled together to take part in the 23rd International Choir Festival. An impressive party of 195 singers and supporters from Surrey Music’s two community choirs (Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir), together with Vox Mundi International Ladies Choir from Egham, enjoyed a five-day trip full of sightseeing and singing. The two Elmbridge Choirs have previously participated together in choral festivals and were delighted to invite the 16 members of Vox Mundi to join them for this trip. All three choirs were accompanied by Vox Mundi’s pianist, David Darby. As well as performing in parish churches in St Julian’s and Gozo, where each choir sang songs from their own repertoire, the choirs had the honour of leading the festival’s ‘Singing and Praying for Peace’ ceremonies in the magnificent St John’s CoCathedral in Valletta. The choirs’ musical directors, Cliff van Tonder (Elmbridge Choir), Christine Parker (Elmbridge Ladies Choir) and Jennifer Bell (Vox Mundi), were privileged to conduct 33 choirs, totalling 1020 choristers! ‘It was the most amazing experience, conducting our choir and a huge audience in such a stunning venue - a very special memory which will stay with me forever,’ says Cliff van Tonder. ‘Singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in one of the most beautiful churches in the world was awe-
inspiring and highly symbolic!’ The choirs took part in the choristers’ parade, where all participating choirs took to the streets of Valletta, proudly waving their countries’ flags and singing songs in their own language - a sight and sound to behold! In addition, the Surrey choirs took their turn performing to cheering crowds from a splendid ornate bandstand at the Valletta City Gates. The choirs enjoyed sightseeing tours to Mdina and Mosta, the Three Cities, a full day on Gozo and a special evening dinner party in a fabulous restaurant, where Christine was presented with a gift to mark her first ‘official’ outing as Musical Director with Elmbridge Ladies Choir. ‘As their new Musical Director, I am so proud of them’, says Christine. ‘Their love of singing shines through in their performances as does their enjoyment of each new experience.’ Cliff was also presented with gifts from the choir members to thank him for organising such a wonderful trip. ‘Cliff has worked his socks off over the last eight months in planning this trip down to the last detail’, explains Debbie Groves from Surrey Music, ‘and we are all indebted to him for once again providing us with such fantastic opportunities and creating wonderful memories. It has been an absolutely amazing trip and we are proud to have been flying the flag not just for Surrey, but as the only UK participants, for Britain too!’

SUNBURY ANTIQUES MARKET COMES TO SANDOWN PARK RACECOURSE TO LAUNCH
EVERY FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH After 39 years successfully running Sunbury Antiques Market at Kempton Park Racecourse, the Sunbury Antiques team are delighted to announce an exciting new venture
Sandown Antiques Market In conjunction with the ever-popular bi-monthly event at Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury Antiques is now also coming to Sandown Park Racecourse – an outstanding location within the M25 with excellent road and rail links, and direct trains from London Waterloo, Clapham Junction and Woking. “Expansion to Sandown Park Racecourse was a logical step for us. It means we can offer both trade and the general public another great venue at attractive rates. Featuring stalls both inside and out, we’ll be maintaining our policy of ‘Free Admission & Free Parking to all Buyers’ to ensure we build on our success.” - commented Edward Cruttenden The first Sandown Antiques Market will be on Tuesday 3rd April 2018, and will continue on the first Tuesday of every month through to December (excluding November). And don’t forget, we’ll still be at Kempton Park Racecourse every second and last Tuesday of each month. About Sunbury Antiques Sunbury Antiques was founded by the late Sue Cruttenden in 1979. Thanks to her dedication and enthusiasm we’ve gone from strength to strength, gradually evolving this family run business into what is now one of the largest and longest running bi-monthly markets in the country. We’re also immensely proud to be recognised as one of Europe’s premier antiques markets.

Spring Green DESIGNS FOR ALL SEASONS
How garden - Hampton Court 2014
Selina Botham - www.designsforallseasons.co.uk
I know it’s just coming up to Christmas but a garden lover is always thinking about the next season, and spring is certainly one to look forward to. After the busy time of Christmas, there is a dull part of winter, when looking forward is a good thing to do and early bulbs like snowdrops and crocus especially planted on mass are just what many of us need. Spring is a time for new life, and importantly… bulbs. Bulbs are like mini miracles - each one, planted in autumn as a dead-looking bulb, springs out of the soil at just the right time and then flowers and fades. Planned carefully, bulbs can create a succession of blooms from January to June and this means that every garden can be transformed for spring. - favourites of mine are snowdrops, mini daffs, crocus and fritillary. - later on, tulip white triumphator and tulip red apeldoorn are good reliable ones that seem to survive well year after year, even in clay (need a sunny spot). - alliums are amazing, with their perfect heads of many flowers. Another favourite of mine is onithogalum magnum, which is tall and stately and a bit more unusual. Bulbs are best planted in informal drifts, rather than in neat rows and they should overlap each other to create
interesting and complimentary combinations. Ferns are another highlight of spring, and watching them unfurl is a real treat. First thing in the morning with dew and clear light, spring is particularly magical. Of course, bird song becomes a real feature again in the garden at this time of year, which is something to look forward to. New leaves on the deciduous plants are vivid and fresh and this is one of the reasons I like to design in a good mix of evergreen and deciduous trees. Evergreens are valuable for their constant structure and form but not much ever changes and you never get that ‘wow’ moment of the new leaves appearing. For me, spring provides the real wow factor in the garden, as one moment, it’s seemingly all looking a bit dormant and dismal, and the next, there are bulbs up and flowering and everything is covered in tiny new leaves and the new year begins. If you’d like to see some garden transformations, see our Facebook page Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons or follow us on Instagram @designsforallseasons If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk

VW Polo OUR FESTIVE CAR REVIEW By Ted Macauley
Next month (January) will herald the arrival of Volkswagen’s latest and boldest bid to cash in and unnerve their rivals in the highly competitive and big business small hatchback SUV market. And it comes in the petite shape of the Polo Mk6, the sixth generation of the marque and what to me looks like a surefire winner. All new and more grown up than ever before, it has improvements on its predecessors, including the abandonment of the three-door version for a five-door replacement. VW…Veritable Winners… which has amassed 14m sales worldwide, and 1.4m in the UK since 1975, has opted to lure younger buyers. Hence the updated, uprated Polo’s sharper looks and dazzling interior, oh-sobright and colourful, compared with its previous rather sombre appearance. Now it is aglow with a neatly integrated wow of an eightinch touchscreen infotainment system designed not only to be easy on the eye but uncomplicatedly convenient to the fingers, even for the ham-fisted among us. In contrast to its older relatives, the re-thought and extended wheelbase offers the distinct advantage of a more generous underbody which consequently benefits those on board, with more space in the cabin, adequate
leg and headroom and a superior driving position with a clear view. Boot space, too, is 25% more generous than before. There is also a fresh range of engines, taking in five 1.0 litre petrol versions as well as 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre petrols and a twosome of 1.6 diesels. It is all fine evidence that Volkswagen is chasing really hard, with so many rivals scrapping so intensely to command the SUV sharplybuilding supply chain. The Mk6 price is reckoned to be about £13,500, a whole deal dearer than, say, the equivalent Ibiza, and certainly a bigger wallet-emptier than its Polo predecessors. But as neat and tidy and economic all-rounders go, this new kid on the cylinder block will hold its own, I am sure. Setbacks? Few. It can be a wee bit noisy and harsh at certain rev levels, but that’s something you can put up with when you allow your thoughts to be overtaken by the vast benefits that accrue from this advanced and tasty mint Polo. Specification: VW Polo 1.0 TSI 95. Engine 3cylinder, 999cc turbo. Petrol. Top speed 116mph. Accleration: 0-62mph 10.8 secs. Price around £13,500 (on sale in January).
