Welcome to our May issue of Look Local! And what a lovely time of year it is too! The grass is growing like crazy in my back garden the dandelions are sprouting and the leaves on the trees have joined us for the warmer months. Although saying that, we’ve had sun shine, rain and hail stones all in one day this week so who knows what the British summer will bring this year? In our area this month there is, as always lots going on; we have news from a local Sailing Club, if you are interested in finding out more about this lovely club why not pop along to their open day this month? Information can be found inside, and we have lots of other bits and bobs too … I hope you enjoy thumbing our pages this month. On a personal note, it’s been a difficult few months for me. I’ve been supporting my lovely mum through her final weeks of life. She sadly passed away at the end of April. I was so lucky to have had such a caring and supportive lady in my life for so long, she was 90 when she died and totally amazing for her age. She helped me so much over the years, in many ways, and when I started Look Local she so willingly looked after my children as I spent many evenings and weekends working. I therefore think it only fair and totally appropriate to dedicate this issue of Look Local to her. Thank you Mum you were the best xox (also, if you’ve had trouble getting hold of me this is why, normal service will now resume thank you for your patience. ) Wishing you all a good month, see you next time…

ASK BRUCE:
CUTTING CLAWS Look Local reader Barbara Turner asks how do I cut my dog’s black nails? There is a pink area underneath each nail with nerves and a blood vessel, called the quick. This means it’s living, and if cut, will bleed and hurt. The quick is easy to see on dogs with white or clear claws, but not on dogs with dark or black claws. For this reason, it is often safer to get an experienced professional to cut a dog’s nails, but you can do this yourself. There are special nail clippers available that come with a built-in light. The light shines through the dog’s claw and exposes the quick so you can see as you cut. Some doggy nail clippers also come with a guard which prevents you cutting too short and close to the quick. You can also look at the underside of the claw for the hollow part (it looks a bit like a canoe) which should be around the middle of the nail. This hollow part is the dead section of the nail and therefore fine to cut. However, the best rule of thumb (excuse the pun!) when cutting your dog’s nails is little and often. That way, you can be sure it will be safe, and you won’t catch or cut the quick. Alternatively, at Bruce’s we do offer a nail clipping service to our customers, or you can get it done by a vet or groomer. MAY G‘R1E7 EN ESHER
The 62nd Esher May Fair will be held on Esher Green, opened by The Mayor of Elmbridge at noon, on Saturday 20th May 2017. This popular local community event, which takes place annually, is a major fundraising activity for the organizers, 4th Thames Ditton ‘Ajax’ Sea Scouts. They are not the only group to benefit though, charities and organisations such as the RNLI and Friends of the Strays of Greece have stalls on the day and raise money for their own good causes. An action packed, fun afternoon out for all the family. The fair has traditional fairground rides, stalls selling arts and crafts, charity items and local products. The ever popular auction will have items for children and adults. An exciting programme of Arena Events runs from 11.45am until 5pm and includes the 1st Hook Scout & Guide Band, Kuk Sool Won Martial Arts, PAPA - the Performng Arts Parents Association from Esher High School, First Class Falconry and a Canine Gymkhana. Musical entertainment is provided by Alake Lore and, after a successful appearance two years ago, the band Bunglesfinger will bring the day to a close. To sustain the family and to provide the opportunity to sit down and relax, a wide variety of refreshments will be on offer including the famous Ajax Sea Scouts tea tent, the barbeque - provided this year by the Ajax Sea Scouts due to popular request and, for those in need of something stronger, a beer and prosecco tent sponsored by Wellden Turnbull. Free parking is available at Sandown Park, we are hoping for excellent weather and a great turnout.

A taste of Iceland to Surrey
Esher based Julia Jones of Iceland Traveller and Ewhurst based Joanna Marshall of Kokoh Chocolate are pleased to be launching a handmade chocolate bar at the Surbiton Food Festival on 14th May. This unusual chocolate bar is made with the finest quality Madagascan origin cocoa and Icelandic sea salt flakes.
N
ot only does this superior Madagascan dark chocolate bar taste delicious, it also boasts many health benefits. Cocoa itself is recognised as a ‘super food’ and is one of the best sources of antioxidants, a substance that may protect cells in your body from free radical damage that can occur from exposure to certain chemicals. Chocolate containing 70% cocoa solids is highly nutritious and contains fibre, iron and a wide range of minerals. Research has also shown that it may help to fight cancer, heart disease and aging through its antioxidant boosting properties. It also contains the substance phenethylamine which is a neurotransmitter found in the brain that acts as a mood elevator and natural antidepressant. The Icelandic sea salt flakes contained in the bar come from Breiðafjörður Bay, a beautiful and bio-diverse area lying between the Snaefellsness peninsula and the remote Westfjords of Iceland. Since 1753, using sustainable geothermal energy, these wonderful flakes have been produced on the small island of Karlsay. This unique tasting sea salt also contains naturally occurring potassium and
18 Looklocal Magazine - May 2017
magnesium, which is known to be good for your heart. Julia, who owns the specialist travel company Iceland Traveller is particularly interested in Iceland’s developing food culture and created the bar as an example of the exciting food combinations that are on offer there. Julia commented: “I am thrilled to have been able to combine Joanna’s superb chocolate with this special Icelandic ingredient. We are very much looking forward to launching our product at the Village Fete at the Surbiton Food Festival. The fete is such an enjoyable local event, and very popular amongst people with a genuine interest in food, so it seemed an ideal place to launch our product. We very much hope that it will be well received.” Joanna explains exactly what the chocolate bar will taste like. “This delicious chocolate bar will appeal to all. However, for real chocolate connoisseurs, you will be in for a special treat. The 70% Madagascan origin cocoa has a powerful taste and aroma. Exotic woods predominate: sandalwood and cedar of Lebanon. Then comes a positive bitterness.
Let it melt slowly on the palette and experience a fruity heart of blueberry, with hints of liquorice and roasted coffee beans. The Icelandic salt flakes offer a sublime contrast to the fruit notes of this wonderfully dark Madagascan chocolate.” Joanna and Julia have enjoyed the experience of working together and feel that their wealth of ideas, energy and passion for both their companies have created an extraordinary product. If you would like to find about more about the chocolate bar or about Iceland Traveller and Kokoh Chocolate, please email Iceland Traveller on julia@icelandtraveller. co.uk or visit their website http://icelandtraveller.co.uk/allour-food-tours/ or Kokoh Chocolate on joannajmarshall@hotmail.com or through www.facebook.com/pg/KokohChocolate-366387026788323/ about/

OF THE MONTH
Some years ago I read a story that high street banks were charging us to withdraw our own money from their cashpoints. Do What? --- It got me thinking.
Watch this space
Isn’t it strange how things turn around, Morals reversed or parked underground. Lessons and rules that were learnt as a child, Are at best, now old-fashioned, at worst they’re reviled. Policemen are sacked for clipping an ear, While children who err are treated with fear. Teachers laid bare for daring to smack, Are spread across papers like sex maniacs

When I was a kid, those who took drugs Were hippies with beads and faint-hearted thugs. And Coke, I recall, was fizzy and black, Not sniffed up a nose before Crackerjack. A man’s home, his castle upon England soil, With the right to repel those who came to despoil. But now the poor thief if he’s beaten when caught, Means, you get six months, he gets victim support. There’s hard working people who can’t find a job, Who are grilled and browbeaten to receive a few bob From a Government giving a luxury pass To unlawful entrants. No questions asked! Butch Cassidy, Sundance and the Hole-in-the Wall, Were a gang who robbed Banks. They were bad one and all. Now Banks have a Hole-in-the-Wall to save fuss, But it’s turned round again, ‘cos they’re now robbing us!

On 11 April there was a very significant Windows 10 update. It contained many security updates and improvements, but be warned it is pretty big and if you have a slow broadband connection it may take a long time (10’s of hours) to download and update your computer. It is beneficial to have this update, so just be mindful of this fact. The download will happen usually in the background, it may result in your machine appearing reluctant to close down or to restart. We saw a machine the otherday which had been trying to update for 2 days, so be warned
Finally, the website www.haveibeenpwned.com will notify you if your email address has been compromised, and from where and when. It reports on events like the recent AOL and Yahoo hacking and tells you how many times your information has been re distributed. It has a database of about 2 billion email addresses. If your details appear on this list you may want to change your password or strengthen your security.
There is a new scam preventing your machine from operating properly, an error message appears on the

gardening with selina botham
the making of a beautiful garden part three
Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham tells us all about garden design and it’s step by step process to creating the garden you want.
T
his third stage is the detail of the hardlandscape and this stage means that the landscapers are all quoting for the same job and you can compare prices meaningfully. It also means that the whole detailed picture is exactly as you want it. The details are those nice touches that you notice with satisfaction every day. The type of paving and walling materials are selected and presented to the client for approval prior to the job starting. The pattern of granite setts or the layout of the slabs is detailed so that no joints are crossing. For steps it will include the way the treads of the steps are set out and the risers are within safe limits, so that a flight of steps feels comfortable and pleasing to use. If you are having a water feature or a fire-pit or other feature this too is specified at this stage. As part of the detailed design the drainage is considered too and the structural integrity of any walls and other hard-landscaped areas is specified. Lighting and irrigation systems will be designed with specialists. Rainwater harvesting is a sustainable solution to garden watering, and means a guilt free green lawn can be achieved. Soil preparation is also specified and the compost and any other treatment required. Sometimes in heavy clay areas the best solution is to remove some clay and

import topsoil. Specification of tree planting and shrub and herbaceous plants is all included so that the landscaper know what is required. The staking of trees and wires for climbers are also specified. The aim is to be as thorough as possible so that extras are kept to an absolute minimum during the build. Turf and lawn preparation is also specified so that an excellent lawn results. There is a written specification so everyone can see what needs to be included. This lists all the work and materials and is used, with the detailed layout plans and construction drawings, by the landscapers to price the job. They will then use it to a work from as they build the garden and at the end of the job it is used to ensure everything has been done as agreed. Occasionally I have worked with house builders who can do landscaping to a good enough standard, but I would normally recommend a specialist landscaper be employed. I have several tried and tested landscapers who I am happy to put forward to my clients depending on the size of the landscaping job. If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas designsforallseasons. co.uk and her Facebook page Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons.

he seven Elmbridge Borough Council’s Centres for the Community and the Relief Carers Scheme - which supports people with memory loss and their Carers- have benefited hugely from donated monies. Most recently, a refurbishment programme took place at the Weybridge Centre for the Community which involved enhancing the community café area and a much- needed toilet refurbishment. A donation of £2,500 has just been received from the ladies of Esher Tangent Club, towards the purchase of exciting new equipment to alleviate memory loss, planned for a new support group starting up at the Cobham Centre for the Community. The equipment will also be used across 3 more of our Centres. There are always opportunities to enhance Centres for the Community buildings, improve their facilities,
and develop activities for the users. Donations are exclusively devoted to improve the quality of life for older people living in the Borough. The three trustees of the Charity; Councillor Tannia Shipley and former Councillors John Sheldon and David Tipping are responsible for the stewardship and disbursement of the donated monies. They are all familiar with the Council’s services and can act independently. If you would like to donate to the Trust you can contact the Trustees, either by email at etfop@elmbridge.gov.uk, or write to 69 Esher Road, Hersham Surrey, KT12 4LW. Skoda Superb
Ted Macauley test drives the Skoda Superb TDI and lets us know what it has to offer....
G
ood looking, stylish and elegant. I know, modest as I am, I could be describing myself - but, no, I am doubling up on a fab hotel and a desirable car that joined forces to make Majorca memorable. They were my combined joy when, along with Trophy Wife, I revelled and relaxed on a comfy stay at the Grand Hotel Son Net snuggled in the Tramuntana Mountains, 25 minutes drive from bustling Palma. The tranquil terrace is a front row on nature. The only peace and quiet being disturbed by an amusingly braying donkey sheltering from the blazing sun in the hotel’s own vineyard – and the squawks of an encircling golden eagle seeking mid-air prey. It is a haven. Serene. And it would be intrusive to be a to-and-froer in a bold and noisy car… like the squat and trumpeting guest Ferrari that whizzed in and out in a frenzy of ear-splitting nuisance. In total contrast my borrowed Skoda Superb was just that…superb. A whispering winner, as hush-hush as can be for such a massive motor, a veritable giant saloon with enough cabin space for a squad of Coldstream Guardsmen. The Superb is Skoda’s value-for-money range topper, the third generation. And each level has seen an improvement with its design engineers fashioning an even better, bigger car with more and more panache each time as an escape from its earlier life reputation as a wretched wreck not to be seen. Not any more. No, sir. The latest Superb,a prize winner worldwide,is one whole load of car for the outlay. An
upmarket pleasure on every count…comfort, ability, economy, nimbleness and sheer enjoyment to drive. And the boot…wow….even TW’s vast, as-usual holiday wardrobe was easily swallowed up without the slightest chance of an unwelcome crease risk. I put it through a sequence of rigorous tests in Majorca where straight flat-outish roads give away to sharp bends with cyclists suddenly wobbling into view requiring heavy braking and swerving, and hills and drops, over scarily bumpy and holed lanes, and my elegantly silvercoloured treat coped without the slightest murmur, threat or protest. I suspect it would soak up with ease an arduous trek, say, between London and Penzance. My Balearic demands on it were short-distanced in comparison. If I am beginning to sound like a, eager fan, I don’t mind. Because I am. I love value for my money and this new, updated, uprated, upmarket contender on the saloon front, slimmed down by 75kg from its predecessor, is a winner with, I would guarantee, plenty more silverware to be awarded. While I remember: I had another quaint and welcome surprise - not that I needed the service on my sunny stopover – but I found umbrellas stowed in each of the front doors. I thought only Rolls Royce did that. I wonder what next from the masterminds behind the design dreams… in the car rightly dubbed Superb.. Specification: Model: TD1 150SE. BHP148. MPG 68.9. Speed 135mph. 0-60 in 8.9seconds. Price £22.555.

book Reviews
Shelter by Jung Yun (Paperback £8.99) Kyung Cho and his wife and child have been living beyond their means and after the 2008 housing crisis things come to a head. A real estate agent comes to tell them how much they will lose by selling the house they cannot afford when Kyung’s mother, Mae, appears beaten, bruised, and naked in their back garden. Something violent has befallen his parents, but something violent has already happened to Kyung – his childhood. Now his parents need his help and he fulfils this obligation by giving them what they gave him – an unstable home! Shelter is Jung Yun’s debut novel and a riveting and profound read.
And I’d Do It Again by Aimee Crocker, (Hardback £16.99) Aimee Crocker was an American heiress with a passion for pearls, a yearning for the Far East and a personality decidedly unsuited to the life of a respectable society lady. Her spirited, unrepentant and very funny memoir was first published in 1936. This new edition will inspire anyone who feels the lure of distant shores. Refusing to let a series of husbands hinder her passion for travel, and relying on her wits and her wealth to get her out of trouble, her adventures make great reading. From enjoying the hospitality of King David Kalakaua of Hawaii to narrowly escaping with her life in Shanghai, her enthusiasm for new people and places gave her a life worth looking back on.
The Muse by Jessie Burton (Paperback £8.99) Jessie Barton’s second novel, The Muse, is a captivating story set between 1960’s London and 1930’s Spain. Intelligent and ambitious Odelle Bastien arrives in London from Trinidad in the summer of 1967. After a difficult and wearisome start working in a shoe shop she eventually finds employment in the Skelton Institute, an exclusive art gallery. Marjorie Quick, the gallery’s eccentric codirector, sees her potential and becomes a mentor to Odelle. She encourages and sponsors her creative writing talent. When a lost masterpiece is brought to the gallery by Lawrie, a friend of Odelle’s, the mystery behind it draws them all into a closer relationship. The picture dates back to the early years of the Spanish civil war. The tale of how and where it was created and how Lawrie came to inherit it is an exciting and complex tale of romance, mystery and art.

Inspiration!
Reporting back... I promised to tell on myself this month after three months of doing ‘Just One Thing’. So, how did I get on? I succeeded. And I failed.
O
ne of my commitments, to throw one thing away each day and go through a drawer or box every week, was like tasting a new drug – it just made me hungry to have a huge clear-out. That was a revelation: previously I’d seen clearing up as something that just needed to be done, and therefore was too easy to put off in favour of something I wanted to do more. Suddenly, clearing up became the thing I most wanted to do! I took books and clothes to charity shops. I threw things away. And I listened to the audiobook of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, by Marie Kondo. This book blew my mind and I was so excited by the possibilities it promised. It encourages ruthless letting go, with gratitude. It teaches responsible ownership: everything you keep must be necessary or beautiful, to have a purpose for being kept, and “I’m sure it’s going to be useful one day” apparently doesn’t qualify! What I loved most about the book was its premise that decluttering is really a process of learning about yourself through the choices you make about what to keep. What a fascinating idea. And then, ‘Life’ happened. Going through all my late mother’s possessions before her home can be sold isn’t such a joyous process, but it has to be done. As a coach, I know that growth happens through the combination of changing what we do and deepening our awareness of who we are, the choices we make and our reasons for making them. Sometimes, our clients can learn more from NOT doing their homework than they can from doing it.
36 Looklocal Magazine - May 2017
So I barely started de-cluttering my own home. Did I fail in my original intention? No way! I made a conscious decision to change my priorities, to spend more time with my mother as her health deteriorated. I will never get that time back; I can clear out my home any time. What I learned about myself was that even though I didn’t do more than start de-cluttering my home, I really enjoyed the process of letting things go, of consciously creating a space that reflected who I was and prompted me to think more carefully about what I wanted to have in it. I can’t wait to get back to it. What good intentions have you jettisoned, and what did you discover about yourself in the process? Keep leaning
