Welcome to our 12th Birthday Celebration issue! How did that happen?! It seems like only yesterday I had this hair-brained idea of starting a local magazine! As it’s our birthday, I decided to buy Look Local a present. It comes in the form of another local magazine! We’re delighted to add to our collection the ever-popular Ashtead & Leatherhead Local. It’s a great publication and a lovely area to add to our circulation. If you’d like to advertise your business in that direction, please give us a call, we’ll be happy to help. We have lots of interesting news and events for you to read about in this month’s issue, including a review of my recent visit to a lovely independent local restaurant right on the High Street in Esher. In addition to this, a little feature by one of my sons who has been working in Australia for the past two years; accompanied by his lovely girlfriend Lucy, he’s now travelling home via many different locations around the globe. A few weeks ago, they were in Borneo and went to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Reserve, which we’ve featured before in Look Local, as Orangutan Appeal UK, which supports Sepilok, is based nearby in Surrey. I hope you enjoy Elliot’s account of their visit. I am so jealous, it’s certainly a place I’d love to go! Of course, it’s the season for Christmas Fairs and shopping evenings, so do take a look at the notices and What’s On pages. Hopefully, there’ll be something there that you’ll fancy attending too. That’s it for now, lots to do here to welcome in our new addition, so I’ll sign off. Until next time, take care,
Ros

ASK BRUCE SECOND CHANCE
Look Local reader, Melissa, is planning to take on a rescue dog as a family pet, and asks where is the best place to start and should she consider a dog from overseas? Giving a rescue dog a second chance is a wonderful gesture and the rewards far outweigh any initial concerns. We have several rescue dogs at day care and they can make super pets. Patience is needed, as they may require extra support, love and time, particularly if they have had a difficult past. Interestingly, overseas rescue dogs are often very well socialised with other dogs because they have been used to being around them on the street or in groups at rescue homes. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we are huge supporters of the Dogs Trust charity. They rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs, and have centres all around the UK that you can visit to find your forever friend. The benefit of taking on a dog from them is that they know all the dogs in their care very well and will ensure you get the right match for your lifestyle. For example, if you have young children or other pets, they will pick a dog that will get along with both. I suggest you check out their website and pop along to your nearest centre for a chat. They’ll be delighted to see you, as will their many residents! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Esher. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce? Send your questions to :-

Castello Restaurant MEDITERRANEAN STAPLES FOR ALL OCCASIONS
10 High Street, Esher, KT10 9RT | www.castellorestaurant.co.uk | 01372 461 789
Home-made pastas, cooked-to-order steaks or fresh fish from the daily specials, all the dishes at Castello Restaurant in the High Street, Esher, are freshly prepared on site, and Castello provides wonderful Mediterranean staples in a simple, bustling dining room fit for all occasions. I went along last week and enjoyed a relaxing evening at this lovely local gem of a restaurant. The dining room has a very warm atmosphere and the menu offers an impressive selection. Castello is owned and run by a husband and wife team, who were also eating their dinner at another table. I love that they not only work there but also get to enjoy the restaurant, and Judi came over and chatted to us for a little while. She is lovely, a very welcoming hostess. It was so nice
10 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
to receive the personal touch, with originality which can be hard to find these days with so many chain restaurants about. Our meal was delicious. We took a while to choose, as many options were very tempting. I started with Salt & Pepper Calamari with Sweet Chilli Mango Salsa, and my friend Ann went for Halloumi Fritters with Rocket Salad, Orange & Lemon Dip. Both were mouth watering, the batter around the calamari was light and crisp and the mango salsa complemented it beautifully. Ann’s halloumi fritters were equally tasty and we were soon ready for our main courses. The waiter kindly recommended some good wine choices, which also went very well with our chosen meals.
I stuck with my aquatic theme and enjoyed a very pretty and very tasty seafood risotto, full of mussels, prawns & squid, and it went down very well indeed. Ann enjoyed a chargrilled Picanha steak (a rump cut). This was served with a creamy mushroom and Dijon mustard sauce, mixed leaf salad and fries to die for. Yes, I did nick a few! The steak sliced easily and was tender and tasty. What a fabulous meal! There was also a wonderful selection of desserts, including mini chocolate pantone with vanilla ice cream, banoffee pie, tartufo al limoncello, apricot & almond cake served warm with vanilla ice cream, to name but a few … but we were very comfortable, following our main course, and decided to end our meal with a mint tea & a cappuccino respectively.
Look Local recommends a trip to Castello, a perfect family or friends evening out, to celebrate a special event or simply treat yourselves to a nice meal out! You won’t be disappointed. Thanks go to all the staff at Castello. We had a really nice evening and I’m sure we will return soon. Booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. Christmas menus and bookings are now available. New Victoria Hospital IS NOW OFFERING A SATURDAY PRIVATE GP SURGERY
New Victoria Hospital, Surrey KT2 7EG | www.newvictoria.co.uk | 0208 949 9640
New Victoria Hospital has launched a Saturday GP surgery. The new service, Your Private GP Service, provides GP consultations on Saturday mornings for patients who may be struggling to get a suitable NHS appointment. Says Sally Dobinson, marketing manager at New Victoria Hospital “We have often been asked by patients coming into the hospital, if we had a private GP on site or could recommend a local private GP, and so we are delighted to be able to offer this service now at New Victoria.” “The new Saturday surgery complements the GP service offered by the NHS by providing patients with an alternative choice. If they cannot get an appointment in time at their local surgery or if they work long hours during the week and cannot easily take time off, we can offer them an alternative. The private GP appointments also allow for a longer consultation time (20, 30 and 40 minute appointments are available), which certain patients will benefit from.”
12 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
A further advantage of the service being based within the hospital is that patients can easily be referred across by the GP to one of the 150 specialist consultants we have working here, or if further investigations such as blood tests or X-rays are needed, these can be carried out here either on the same day or very shortly after. The service at New Victoria Hospital is being run by Dr Catherine Aboud and Dr Nadia Oozeerally of Your Private GP Service. Services offered by the GPs include general health appointments, well man and well woman health screens, medicals, travel clinics, vaccinations, cervical smears, sexual health screens, fertility screens, menopause and HRT guidance, diabetes reviews, asthma reviews and smoking cessation. “While the hospital will be offering a Saturday service to begin with, we hope to extend the days and times available at some point in the near future” says Sally Dobinson. To make an appointment with Your Private GP Service at New Victoria Hospital, call 020 8949 9640.
Your Private GP Saturday Surgery
Your Private GP Service at New Victoria Hospital is available for you and your family. Whether you’re looking for expert advice and treatment or a second opinion, our highly experienced GPs will provide a fast, friendly and professional service. Sepilok Orangutan My middle son Elliot and his girlfriend Lucy have been living and working in Australia for the past two years. They are returning to the UK in December but before they come home, they are enjoying a wonderful travel adventure. As part of this, they spent a few weeks in Borneo and went to visit The Sepilok Orangutan Centre. We have featured the centre in Look Local before because the UK Orangutan Appeal organisation is based locally to us here in Surrey. I asked Elliot to send an account of their visit to share with you. I hope you enjoy hearing all about it. The world renown Sepilok Orangutan Centre in Malaysian Borneo rehabilitat orphaned orangutans which have either lost their homes & families due to agriculture, de-forestation or in some cases because they were previously kept as inappropriate pets, and have now grown too big for their ‘owners’ to keep. During a recent trip to Borneo we were lucky enough to visit the center and see the amazing work they’ve
14 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
been doing. Helen the Liaison Officer for the UK Orangutan appeal introduced us to the staff and the chief veterinarian Dr.Nabila. Their enthusiasm for, and devotion to these wonderful critically endangered animals was very apparent from the off. We were shown a video about a young Orangutan called Alexis and her path to rehabilitation having been kept as a pet by a plantation worker. It is estimated that the Orangutan population will be reduced by 86% between 1973 and 2025. The center has been helping since 1964 and has seen two generations of wild Orangutan born as a result of one rehabilitated female. A wonderful reflection of their tireless work. Helen then walked us through the jungle, along a boardwalk to the outdoor nursery area, which had been built by the UK Orangutan appeal. We were delighted to see a collection of young Orangutans practicing their climbing skills on a playground of suspended ropes, platforms and hammocks all were designed to teach
Rehabilitation Centre them how to survive in the jungle and they looked as if they were having lots of fun as they swung and moved with such ease from rope to rope using their hands and feet and tails too (they don’t have tails). Even at this young age they were very adept and moved with such ease. It was a wonderful sight to see. After another brief walk along the jungle boardwalk we arrived at the feeding platform. Here the older rehabilitated Orangutans can feed twice a day to ease the transition into the wild. After waiting a while we saw a wild macaque monkey but no Orangutans. This is testimony to how well the program works; it means they have learnt to find their own food in the wild and no loner rely on the provisions provided by the center. Fortunately for us, at during the afternoon feeding we did see saw two playful, young (Mimi is a full grown female)Orangutans that Helen informed us were called Mimi and Itiban. They were swinging from the branches and really enjoying their dinner, such an
amazing sight. Lucy & I would like to say a very big thank you to Helen and everyone at the Sepilok Center for showing us around and teaching us all about this totally fantastic rehabilitation program. While the center is doing a great job in helping the Orangutans, they are still critically endangered creatures and greatly at risk. If you would like to find out more, donate or even visit Sepilok (which I would very much recommend) please visit www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk The charity run an Orangutan Adoption Scheme which makes an excellent present for Christmas for young and old alike and it lasts all year! You will receive updates and a photo of your chosen orangutan, and in these materialistic days, what a wonderful gift to give/receive. Contact www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk for more information.

Santa Fun Run LET’S JINGLE ALL THE WAY! Launch Date: Sunday 3 December 2017 10.30am at Woking Leisure Centre
Woking & Sam Beare Hospices launched their annual Santa Fun Run event this week, calling for ‘Santas’ of all ages to join in this festive and fun event at 10.30am on Sunday 3 December at a new venue for 2017 at Woking Leisure Centre. Chief Executive Jayne Cooper said, ‘The Santa Fun Run is a great tradition in our festive calendar and we are all looking forward to it. We have had a momentous year with the opening of our new hospice in May, and this fantastic family event is a great way to celebrate all the very hard work and dedicated fundraising that has made that possible. Several hundred ‘Santas’ walking, jogging or running round the course will be quite a sight to see!’ Participants can choose between a 3k and a 5k course on the day. The 3k course is buggy-friendly and completely pedestrianised, looping twice around the Leisure Centre and Woking Park – perfect if little legs get tired halfway! The 5k route also includes the park and ventures out onto local pavements, where hospice marshals will be guiding the runners and cheering them on.
26 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
Entry is £12 for an adult, £6 for a child and free for our youngest participants aged 3 and under, with a discount for family bookings. All participants will receive a Santa suit to wear and keep as part of their entry fee, with a Santa hat for those aged 3 and under. A medal and refreshments will be provided at the finish at Woking Leisure Centre. Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are simply asking everyone taking part to raise as much as they can to support the free endof-life care the charity provides to some 1.400 people across North West Surrey each year and their families, which costs more than £8million each year to provide. To find out more and to register for this family-friendly event, visit www.wsbhospices.co.uk and take a look at the events pages. It’s also a great opportunity for a festive challenge for your club or colleagues! Participants will sign in and collect their suits and hats from 9am prior to the race starting at 10.30am on Sunday 3 December.

It’s easy to think that the garden is less important in winter when you might not be outside as much and the days are shorter, but given good structure and some subtle but carefully conceived lighting, you can enjoy your garden through the colder darker months of winter too. Here are some tips for the winter garden :- Good structure really makes a difference in winter when shapes of lawns, paths, trees are more obvious. - All the best views for winter should be seen from the cosier rooms that you use mostly at this time of year. - Include some winter flowers, such as hellebores, crocus and snowdrops close to the house. Mahonia, Lonicera fragrantissima, Hamamelis and Sarcococca will fill the air with their scent. Evergreen shapes and tree silhouettes are both important in the winter garden and these can be used with great effect, especially when you think of the direction of the shadows they will create across a lawn or terrace. - I love big lawns all year round, but the sparkle of frost over a large lawn is really magical, so don’t overlook the
28 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
beauty of your lawn in winter. - Use fairy lights in order to create that extra bit of sparkle. A potted Christmas tree can be positioned outdoors for the festive time of year. - Garden lighting can be used to bring your garden alive in the dark of winter. - Position some special winter flowers and a bench somewhere where you can walk to on a sunny winter day so that you have an incentive for getting outside as often as you can. - For the more adventurous, a fire pit is fun in winter (as well as the summer) and can be used to roast chestnuts or marshmallows and create some winter garden family memories. GarsonsFarm CHRISTMAS FOOD MARKET
Garsons of Esher prepares a festive feast for 2017 Christmas Food Market
Garsons of Esher will get the festive season off to a tasty start this year with a Christmas Food Market taking place on the weekend of 18 and 19 November. Shoppers can soak up the festive atmosphere in a marquee adjacent to the award-winning Garsons Farm Shop, while sampling some of the best seasonal food and drink from Surrey and beyond. Following on from the first Christmas Food Market at Garsons in 2016, the family-run garden centre and farm shop has decided to make the free event a regular fixture on its calendar. Farm shop manager Nigel Chandler, who organises the Market, says it will be a great opportunity for foodies to discover new products and plan their festive menus. “We’ll have everything you could want for your Christmas table, from succulent turkey to festive tipples – and there will be lots of delicious food and drink to try before you buy!” The Bevan’s Butchers counter will be taking orders for locally-reared free-range turkey and other seasonal meats, and offering expert advice on preparing and cooking the festive feast. Leopard Dairy will be on hand to help shoppers choose the perfect cheeseboard selection, while Loseley Bakery will be sampling some of their delicious seasonal bakes, including Christmas cakes, mince pies
and traditional stollen. Those planning on entertaining over the festive period will find plenty of delicious inspiration, including traditional hand-raised Toppings Pies, gourmet Kent Crisps and juicy Mediterranean olives. And to wash it all down, there will be local beers from Hepworth Brewery, wines and ciders from Lyme Bay Winery and artisan soft drinks from The Original Drinks Co. “Last year’s Christmas Food Market was a great success, and we’re hoping to make this year’s event even bigger and more exciting,” adds Nigel. “Our customers loved having the chance to meet the people who make the products, try out something different and learn tips and tricks to make their Christmas dinner better than ever. We can’t wait to welcome everyone in November.” The Garsons Christmas Food Market is free to enter and there is plenty of free parking for visitors. Garsons Christmas shop will also be open, located in the garden centre, where shoppers will find a range of gift ideas for all the family, along with lights, decorations and trees. • Garsons Christmas Food Market will run from 9am until 5pm on Saturday 18 November and 11am until 4pm on Sunday 19 November 2017

Successful Coffee Morning KENT SURREY SUSSEX AIR AMBULANCE TRUST
held by Buttons & Bow over 60s Club on Saturday 30th September in the Village Hall, West End Lane, Esher, Surrey
The Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance Trust provides a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), responding to patients who have suffered trauma or serious medical emergencies. They operate 24 hours a day, ensuring they can be there for the most critically ill and injured people in the region. The charity relies almost entirely on donations and fundraising, and without this kind support, they simply could not continue their life-saving work. During the busy 4 hours, there were refreshments to be had whilst supporters browsed among the stalls (selling bric-a-brac, all sorts of crafts, plants), hoping to find a bargain; there were also homemade cakes on sale, plus a ‘guess the weight of the cake’, an auction and Grand

Britain’s Classroom Heroes LOCAL TEACHER IN THE RUNNING...
Mrs Hayley Townsend, of St Paul’s Catholic School in Thames Ditton, is to attend the prestigious UK grand finale of the Pearson Teaching Awards
On Sunday 22nd October, Hayley will attend a glittering awards ceremony at The East Wintergarden, London, where she will find out if she has won a prestigious Gold Plato Award. Hayley was nominated for the accolade by pupils, parents and colleagues in the St Paul’s Catholic School community. The ceremony, hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty with Countryfile’s Sean Fletcher, will be broadcast on BBC Two at 6pm on 29th October, as Britain’s Classroom Heroes, and is an annual event that celebrates the very best of the UK’s teaching profession. Eleven Gold Plato awards will be presented across categories such as Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School, Excellence in Special Needs Education and Lifetime Achievement. In June this year, Hayley was recognised for her exceptional contribution to the teaching profession as one of just 56 Silver Teaching Award winners in the UK, winning her award in the category The Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School. Hayley started her teaching career in 1992 and joined St Paul’s in 2014, firstly on a part-time basis and then as a full-time class teacher. She successfully combines being a mother of 4 children and an outstanding classroom teacher. Hayley’s students adore her. More importantly, they trust her and this has allowed Hayley to ask them to perform their very best. Their parents know that there is something magical unfolding and they are only too eager support the efforts within class. What sets Hayley apart is her desire to keep learning. Thus, when new initiatives are being trialled, she is at the front of the line looking to participate. The progress that her children make is strong and this is because Hayley constructs lessons and learning opportunities specifically for the needs of her children. The Pearson Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching. Founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam, they recognise the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young
people they teach. M i c h a e l Morpurgo, C h i l d r e n’s author and president of the Pearson Teaching Awards said: “Teachers are the quiet heroes. By telling their stories, by highlighting their skill and dedication, we can do some justice to them and to the whole profession. Through the Teaching Awards, we hope to enhance the reputation and value of the teachers in our lives, their importance in our society, and thus help to encourage the most talented and committed young people to become teachers.” Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, said: “Great teaching improves the life chances of our children. It’s an incredibly tough, pressured and wearing job. Teachers deserve all the support we can give them, now more than ever. That’s why these Pearson Teaching Awards are important, and that’s why I’m delighted once again to lend our support to giving teaching the recognition it deserves.” Parents and students alike can recognise and thank the teachers who are making a difference by visiting http://teachingawards.com/thank-a-teacher/ to thank a teacher. Doing so means they will be in with a chance of winning at next year’s ceremony. Honda Civic OUR NOVEMBER CAR REVIEW
By Ted Macauley
As any Formula One follower will tell you and eagerly supported by struggling double-champion Fernando Alonso, the Honda engine in the once-world-beater McLaren is a hapless and hopeless grand prix nonentity. Week in, week out, a very frustrated Alonso, the Spanish Flyer in slow-mo, has been dumped down among the also-rans because of the pathetic performance and the handiwork, or lack of it, of the Japanese engine makers. Maybe they should have replaced their GP power unit with one nicked from the company’s red hot hatch, the Honda Civic Type R, a real winner, or at least, talked over how to make an engine that hits the high spots of its crucial aims. The updated, uprated new entry onto the hot-hatch scene is unrecognisible from its predecessor which was up for grabs for less than two years and which struggled to make any sort of impression over and above disappointment because of its ride (which was too hard) on tyre noises that raided the eardrums. After a re-think at HQ, the brainbox engineers and designers sent a substitute into the reckoning, the brand new Type R, a real treat, with vastly improved set-ups all round, quieter, more refined but even sharper and neater, without ruining its general handling capability. Okay, the overall styling may be a wee bit bizarre
34 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
compared with its impressive hot-seller rivals such as the Golf GTI, Mini Cooper S and Ford Focus RS, but it holds its own as full value for money and reliability on the move. Inside, the seating is superb and supportive, the cabin design stylish, the slick manual gearbox a treat. Throttle response is idea, the brakes are crisp and positive, the lay-out is practical, with easy-on-the-eye and reachable knobs and dials. Hot hatches exist basically in a very specialised zone and it is vital that their offbeat stance, compared with more sedate modes of transport, reaches into the real dynamics of motoring for fun and not just necessity for commuting or family transport. I must say that the rejigged Civic R covers the needs of practicality, economy and looks, with the added joy of being a genuine pleasure to drive around a town’s tight and busy streets or on the longer drags of motorways. Overall, it is sure to be a roaring and speedy success, unlike its flop of a big brother, blighting McLaren as a grand prix also-ran. Specification: price range £30,995 - £32,995. My choice, the fastest. VTEC Type R. BHP 320. Top speed 169mph. Acceleration 0-62 in 5.7 secs. Warranty: three years or 60,000 miles.
