Welcome to our September issue of Look Local I hope you all enjoyed a good summer and that you managed to relax a little during the past weeks. We had a lovely break and took the opportunity to give the Look Local office a bit of a make over! Of course, a huge amount of clearing out had to be done beforehand, but now we have a very neat, tidy and newly-decorated work space which is very lovely indeed! In addition to that, we did manage to take a break and we are now feeling refreshed and raring to bring you action-packed Look Local issues during this new season. This month, we include some bright and cheery coverage of the Claygate Flower and Village Show which took place in July. What a great local event this was, and congratulations and thanks must go the organisers for putting together such a lovely day for all to enjoy. Also in this issue, a feature about bees and bee-keeping which we hope you will enjoy. This includes information on a ten-week training course for anyone wishing to learn more. Certainly a good plan if you are thinking of starting your own colony! Bruce answers another reader’s dog-related question on page 12. I always enjoy hearing his solutions to the varied & interesting questions which are sent in. Bruce selects a question to answer each month, so if you have anything of a canine nature that you would like to ask him, do email him at askbruce@brucesdc.co.uk Added to this, our monthly recipe, puzzles, car review and gardening feature, and I hope there will be a little something for everyone to enjoy. Wishing you a lovely September, Kindest regards,

Ros

ONE OF THE MANY CHILDREN’S RACES

Barry Fitzpatrick (Chairman)

“Each year we try to get a little better and this year we certainly succeeded. Despite the initial rain a huge crowd arrived at The Show to enjoy a family afternoon with neighbours and friends. There was a lovely atmosphere as people wandered throughout the show checking out stalls and displays and still found time for some bar or teatime refreshment.” A wonderful time was had by all (about 5,000 people) at the Claygate Flower & Village Show on Saturday 15 July 2017, as villagers and visitors kicked up their heels, despite an hour of un-forecast rain at the show’s start. The 104th annual Show was formally opened by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Rachel Lake at 2:00pm by the formal cutting of the doorway sash to the impressive exhibition marquee.

They also loved participating with their beloved pets in the Companion Dog Show and admiring the vintage cars and motorcycles as well as watching the entertainment in the arena programme, which included local dancers (Chadsworth Stage School & Zumba Dancers), the 1st Claygate Scout and Guide Band, the Thames Valley Morris Men and displays of martial arts by Kuk Sool Won.

Families enjoyed the wonderful adult and junior exhibits which included flowers, fruit, vegetables,

"It was a wonderful day for our community. The popularity of the show continues to grow due to its warm, relaxed atmosphere and its quirky mix of old & new. Everyone's efforts from stall volunteers, fundraisers for the Pavilion rebuild; even enthusiastic jam-makers, 3 year-old artists and budding flower and vegetable growers made it a very special occasion."

animals, ferret racing, and the mini rugby try-out, while younger children were all smiles as they participated in the Fancy Dress Parade, had their faces painted, played traditional games and watched Punch and Judy. Adults enjoyed the tug-of-war, the variety of the Stalls Village, the food and drink, primarily provided by the Ajax Sea Scouts and the Beer Tent (also provided by the scouts) and new, this year, the Prosecco Tent. Towards the end of the afternoon the 2017 President, Susannah Moffat presented cups and trophies to the

On Sunday Evening 16 July, at the same venue, The Claygate Recreation Ground, Absolute Bowie, the David Bowie tribute entertained 800 guests either standing outside, or sitting in the marquee, The Gig On The Rec has been going for 5 years now and with the flower show forms the Claygate Village Weekend. Monies raised from both events will be used to fund local charities and the rebuild of the Claygate Clubhouse which was destroyed by fire last November.

WORDS BY DAVID KID JENSEN

ASK BRUCE +

OVERCOMING FEAR

+

Look Local reader, Fiona, has a three-year-old cross-breed rescue dog she’s owned for five months. He has settled in well and has a gentle nature, but is terrified of the vacuum cleaner. Fiona asks how can she cure his fear? The key thing here is to introduce the vacuum cleaner to him slowly using positive stimuli. This will, in time, turn his foe into a friend. Switch the cleaner on and instantly give him a treat or a favourite toy, then switch the cleaner off. Repeat a few times and leave it at that. What you are doing here is building an association between the noisy machine and something nice that he loves. In time, both you and he should see this as a fun game and not a scary exercise. Don’t rush things - little and often is best. Accept it will take time; weeks or months rather than days. Removing his fear is not an overnight quick fix but you will see small incremental benefits. What you must never do is reinforce his fear. Don’t be tempted to cuddle and comfort him when you turn the cleaner on and he becomes scared. Unlike a child, he will not understand your words, and will simply think you are confirming this is something to be frightened of. Be calm and consistent, and turn his negative fear into a fun game and positive experience. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Esher. Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe PET SHOP BOYS Once upon a time, pop fans, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe met in an electronic shop in the Kings Road, Chelsea. Recognizing a mutual interest in dance music, they began to work together, first in Tennant’s flat in South West London and then from 1982 in a small studio in Camden Town. Since those early days, they have sold over 50 million records worldwide, and the boys are listed as the most successful duo in British music history. They have achieved 42 Top 30 singles and 22 Top 10 hits in the UK. With this amazing success story and huge fanbase, I’m delighted to pass on the news of a very special series of reissues of their ground-breaking Parlophone (record label) LPs which is just out. This definitive edition features each album from the duo’s peerless discography on the label, remastered and released with additional further listening albums of bonus tracks, demos and mixes created in the same period of time as each album. Each album will be accompanied by an extensive booklet in which Neil and Chris discuss each song, illustrated with lots of archive footage. What a labour of love this all is! Essential goodies for the unique twosome once regarded as the odd couple. They’ve certainly come a long way since recording their exclusive, first ever radio session for me all those years ago and I hope this heralds the welcome return of the PSBs.

garden society +

T

ESHER MOLESEY

he Esher Molesey Garden Society has created a ‘Flower Box’ on Site No. 130/b. Our web site is www.emgs.co.uk

The Society was founded in 1917 and so is celebrating 100 years of providing companionship, knowledge about gardening and an exchange forum for both plants and ideas for its members. Most of its members live within a few miles of Hampton Court and therefore it seems appropriate that we should choose this location for one of our special events in this centenary year. In creating this flower box, we have aimed to reflect the nature of our suburban gardens. We have done this by using material grown in or found in our members’ gardens. As is usual in many home gardens, there is a mixture of perennial and annual plants. There are plants that are bee and insect-friendly and plants that flower over a wide range of periods. Again, as is common in

14 Looklocal Magazine - September 2017

+

many gardens, we have included water for birds and habitats for insects. We have not tried to show new plants or dramatic arrangements. Rather, we have tried to reflect what is created when gardeners hand plants down from generation to generation, and the variety that can be achieved when gardeners co-operate with their neighbours, relations and friends. For a list of plants used, contact secretary@emgs.co.uk. For contact during the show, please ring 07985 293 671. When the show is over, this garden will be dismantled. Many of the plants and objects in it will return to the gardens that they came from. We hope that many visitors to the show will have obtained pleasure and inspiration from what we created.

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.

There are many reasons why you would want a highperformance computer. It may be that you play games, photo edit, video edit, or you do 3D design or animation. If your machine’s performance is not up to the task, this will result in poor graphics quality or very jerky performance. Maybe it’s taking ages to reflect any changes you have made? Now is the time to address the problem. We have a significant range of truly high performance PCs and laptops which will consign your previous issues to the “distant memory” department. Our PCs are all custom-built, so we can build the very best machine for your purposes. The laptops are preassembled and enjoy a stunning specification. What to look for: Processor The raw performance is supplied by the processor (CPU), and the device you should be going for is the Intel Core i7 quad core device or the AMD Ryzen 1700 with 8 cores. Some laptops have Core i7 CPUs with dual core CPUs. This will provide you with less power, and they are generally of lower performance Solid State Hard drive (SSDs) Programs and data are stored on the hard drive in the PC, and the faster you can access this information, the faster the PC will respond. The hard drive types used in PCs for the last 20 years have been mechanical hard drives, and whilst they can hold huge amounts of data, their access speed is quite slow. The solid state hard drives offer dynamic performance, up to 20 times faster than a mechanical drive, but the capacity of SSDs tends to be less, so our solution is to install both. The SSD is used to store your Windows system and programs, whilst the mechanical hard drive is used to store all your data.

16 Looklocal Magazine - September 2017

Graphics card This is a component which lives inside your machine and manages the information displayed. There are two main manufacturers of graphics cards, NVidia and Radeon, with a variety of models in the range. Going for the most up-to-date graphics card could cost as much as £600 just for the card, but selecting the next model back in the range (which was the very best graphics card only 2 or 3 months ago) will reduce the cost of the graphics card to c£250. Other factors Having at least 8Gb of RAM is important, as is having a good powerful power supply to provide a reliable and regulated power feed to the components. A quality case with good cooling and thermal qualities is also essential, and finally, the motherboard must be of a suitable standard to cater for your needs. There are a number of factors you need to consider, so before you make that decision, come and talk to us to ensure you are covering all the aspects required. Total Care For the past 4 years, we have been offering home and small business users a comprehensive support package which provides the following key features: • Industry-leading internet security program • Full machine data backup to our cloud • Unlimited remote assistance from our Leatherhead based engineers • Unlimited workshop labour from our Leatherhead based engineers • Unlimited instore advice and assistance All this for a single annual payment of £120 plus VAT per year.

et me kick off with an admission. Initially, when the chance to review the latest Ford Fiesta arose, all my historic doubts and dislikes loomed again and I dawdled for ages over the responsibility. Alright, I admit, it’s senseless to form an opinion without sampling whatever might be the product, but my memories of the Fiesta from its onset are darkened by the sight of too many rusting, rattletrap models with no style or presence, even if their pricing, years ago, was considered to be a bargain. I reasoned that you get what you pay for, and even though Ford reaped vast rewards, I could never persuade myself that owning a Fiesta was in any way shape or form worthwhile, despite the claims it was the UK’s favourite car. Right across the country, from its early dealership HQ in Birmingham, more than one million…YES…1,000,000... have been ordered since 2008 - and since its initial arrival on the scene in 1976, more than 4,500,000 have found their way onto our drives and rubbish tips. OK, OK, maybe I’m being too cynical. But the clarity of my memory and the images of the very ordinary Fiesta usually a teenager’s first car and generally second or third hand, in those long-gone days - still lingers in my mind’s eye. But times and attitudes change and that’s happened in my case. The fresh Fiesta, just out, has given me good cause to readjust my opinion under a welter of upgrades and updates and some smart, astute thinking and planning by the brainbox designers and engineers. The new Ford kid on the cylinder block, the replacement effort to retake control and monopoly of the heavilyfought small hatchback battleground, is destined to give upper-brand and firmly established rivals Seat Ibiza and the Skoda Fabia a very, very strong challenge. And it could well be a winner…there, I’ve said it! It looks good. It has improved performing engines. revised in-car technology, greater grip, a totally revamped, stylish cabin with a heated leather steering wheel and refinement at every glance. The predecessors suffered dreary interiors

with pathetic infotainment and a plethora of cheap plastics. Not any more…it now feels distinctly plush! High quality indeed. The top-of-the-range, sporty ST-Line, which benefits from bottom-hugger sports seats and lower suspension to deepen the sensation of safety around the tighter turns and over the bumps, is a real treat, with its 138bhp motor offering a nippy response that’s distinctly pleasing. In short, it’s a superb drive in all aspects, from its smart, comfy inside with plenty of head and leg room, even for six-footers like me, and a surprisingly powerful engine, ensuring you’re not left standing if needs be. And the great news for tightwads is its economy, with a welcome return of 63 mpg. Red, white and blue, Ford reveal, are the three favourite colours, but in the fresh Fiesta line-up, you can opt for new shades Chrome Copper and Mint Green. Andy Barratt, chairman of Ford Britain, is rightly upbeat about the Fiesta newcomer, telling me:”The eyes of the world are on us. And we will take over the rein as the top seller.” I can’t argue with that confident forecast. It’s a real high flier in more ways than one. Specification: Fiesta 140 ST-Line five door. Engine: 1.0-litre petrol. 138BHP. Six speed manual gearbox. Top speed 125mph.0-62mph in 9.0secs. Economy: 63mpg. Price £18,945.

KENT SURREY SUSSEX AIR AMBULANCE CHAIRTY

+

Buttons & Bows have arranged a coffee morning on SATURDAY 30th SEPTEMBER 2017 at 9am - 1pm in the Village Hall, West End Lane, Esher, to raise funds for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance Charity.

The Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance Trust provides a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), responding to patients who have suffered trauma or serious medical emergencies. They operate 24 hours a day, ensuring they can be there for the most critically ill and injured people in the region. When necessary, their medical crews can provide highly specialist care at the scene. They operate two aircraft, one from their Marden base in daylight hours and the other from their Redhill base 24 hours

a day. This means that no matter where you are in Kent, Surrey or Sussex, you are never more than 20 minutes from the life-saving care that only they can bring directly to your side. The charity relies almost entirely on donations and fundraising, and without this kind support, they simply could not continue their life saving work. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP FOR ANY ENQUIRIES, CALL US: 01372 465937

beekeeping +

A QUICK GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Beekeeping is an increasingly popular pastime. The health (and taste) benefits of honey, while caring for a vital insect pollinator, act as a draw for people of all ages.

A bit about bees... A colony of bees contains a single queen, a few hundred male bees (drones) and up to 50,000 female worker bees, which are the honeybees you see visiting flowers in your garden. The queen is larger than a worker and can live up to three years. She will lay more than half a million eggs. A new queen makes a mating flight, mates with six or seven drones and returns to the hive where all her needs are met by worker bees.

1. What sort of hive should I buy? Most beginners use the National, a square box that is easy to use, but you could opt for a traditional, double skinned (ie a box within a box) WBC hive (named

+

after William Broughton Carr), which is a bit more expensive, but looks more romantic.

2. Where do I get the bees? Try your local beekeepers’ association to see if there are bees for sale nearby or if they know of any bee auctions, usually held in May and June. Check the classified pages of magazines such as BeeCraft (http://www.bee-craft. com/) or use a mail-order company such as Maisemore - http://www.bees-online.co.uk/ Paynes - https://www.paynesbeefarm.co.uk/ Thorne - http://www.thorne.co.uk/ or National Bee Supplies - http://www.beekeeping.co.uk/. Most importantly, make sure they are gentle: bees differ in temperament and it’s best to start with docile ones. Contact a regional branch of The British Beekeepers’ Association (http://www.bbka.org.uk/), which in this area is Surrey (http://www.surreybeekeepers.org.uk/), and locally, the Weybridge division (http://weybridgebeekeepers.weebly.com/).

3. What kit will I need? A bee-proof all-in-one suit with veil, together with a pair of gloves and wellies, costs less than £150. Apart from the hive, you’ll need a ‘smoker’ to puff smoke as you work (bees link it with forest fires and, thinking their home is in danger, concentrate on eating their precious honey, leaving you free to rummage in the hive), and a hive tool to prise apart the hive parts.

4. How much care do bees require? Bees can survive without human input, so unlike other livestock, do not require daily attention. On a warm spring day, open your hive for a thorough inspection; check your queen is laying eggs, make sure there are still enough honey stores and give the hive a good clean, scraping away winter debris, and replacing old broken frames. Until July, the colony will be growing rapidly and can reach up to 50,000, so check weekly to ensure there is room for egg-laying and honey storing, otherwise

the bees may swarm. This is when the queen, sensing that space is running out, leaves the hive with half the worker bees to form another colony. Though the bees left behind will survive (they realise they are queenless and feed some of the larvae with Royal Jelly to create a new queen), you will have lost half your workforce and your honey crop will be reduced.

5. Collecting the honey In August, you can collect your honey, perhaps 40lbs or more per hive. In autumn, you need to replace the ‘stolen’ honey by feeding your bees a sugar solution. Then, having protected the hive against woodpeckers and mice, you can shut up shop for the winter.

6. Where can I learn how to keep bees? The Weybridge division of Surrey Beekeepers Association runs a 10 week theory course in January-March, followed by a 10 week practical course in April-June. For further info, see http://weybridgebeekeepers.weebly.com/

planting the garden +

D E SIG N S FO R AL L SE ASO NS +

Plants are what really makes the garden; they add the softness and life that a garden needs. For most of my clients, they are as excited as I am about the plants, and we agree plant choices carefully so that I include their favourites but can also advise them which plants will best suit the situation and complement the design. I also know from past experience which plants last and which are short lived and so are best avoided. Using my trade connections, I source the best plants and ensure personally that they are of the best quality available. I charge for the plants at a rate per m2 which is agreed with the client. Any new trees are specially selected and photos sent to the client for approval prior to ordering them. Each tree is individually priced

32 Looklocal Magazine - September 2017

according to its size and variety. Depending on the scale of the planting job and as long as the client is having an irrigation system, the planting can take place at more or less any time of the year. Peak summer and deep winter will be avoided if severe weather is forecast. Typically, the best times for planting are spring and autumn, but root-balled trees (which are cheaper) are only available in winter. Once all the bed preparation has been done by the contractor, the plant delivery is arranged. The arrival of the plants is always an exciting time and the garden begins to take on its final character. Off-loading large trees is a challenge and the contractor will ensure they have the appropriate lifting equipment

to handle the trees off the lorry and into position in the garden. Large trees are planted in the garden first, and the main hedges and shrubs, then the smaller perennial plants which will complete the scheme are set out (all the setting out is checked by me or my team) and then everything is planted by the landscapers. Plants must be planted at just the right depth, with the best side facing the front of the border. Correct watering is key too so that they are not over or under-watered. Current best practice for tree planting dictates that the subsoil is not disturbed beneath the tree so that a heavy tree will not ‘sink’ within its planting hole through time. Trees and any tall hedges must be carefully staked (often using underground ties which don’t show). If wooden stakes are used, these can be removed after several years once the tree has established. After planting, the soil will often be mulched with compost or bark to help prevent weed growth and also to retain moisture in the soil. Incorporating compost within the top soil means that the amount of water retained within the soil is much better. All these things ensure that the planting will thrive. I do not guarantee plants, but I do ensure that they are well selected and planted, meaning there are very few losses. The aim is

to plant densely enough that within a couple of years, the ground will be covered so that weeds have no bare ground to colonise. Too densely and plants won’t have room to grow properly and you’ll end up having to remove plants. A garden is a developing, living piece of art and will need maintenance. Even a ‘low maintenance’ scheme will need managing, and especially important is the first year. One of my clients says she feels she is in charge of a rather unruly teenager and I think that sums up a new garden. However, given time and careful control early on, it does settle down and you can relax more. Having a garden that you love means that you will be happier to spend time in it caring for it too. For every one of my clients, I offer a free consultation during the first year and this is often used to discuss maintenance.
