Welcome to our super summer issue which covers both July & August. Within our pages this month is a wonderfully colourful gardening feature from Selina Botham. This lady never fails to inspire me! We are also delighted to bring you another fantastic Look Local competition… two pairs of Olly Murs tickets up for grabs! Olly will be performing at Sandown Park Racecourse on 10th August. Please see inside for details on how to enter. We also send congratulations to last month’s Tom Jones ticket winners. I hope you have a fantastic evening, I’m very sure Mr Jones will put on a wonderful show (winners have been informed and are listed inside on page 35). Thank you to everyone who entered, we had an overwhelming response, I’m just sorry you couldn’t all be winners. Congratulations are also in order for the Teacher of the Year. This lady was the only teacher in Surrey to win any category within the awards - St Paul’s Catholic School in Thames Ditton must be very proud of her ! See page 16 for more info. I received an email from a local lady a few weeks ago whose mum has written a beautiful summer poem. She wondered if it was something we might like to include. It is lovely and I was delighted to share this with you all. Thanks go to Alouisa Nawalkar for sending it in, and I hope your Mum likes seeing it in print. In addition, we include coverage on an Open Day at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care...looks like they had such fun!...and we bring you news of a whole selection of other events and activities going on over the summer months in and around the area. We will be taking a short break during August but we look forward to bringing you more coverage of local events and news in September. I wish you all a lovely summer. Take care, until next time…

ASK BRUCE

+

TAKING YOUR DOG ABROAD

+

Look Local reader, Jade, has a five-year-old mixed breed rescue dog that she will be relocating to America. Jade asks; how can I prepare her for the journey? This is a big move for all the family and for your dog. At five, she is mature enough to cope with the experience, but not too old for it to be challenging. There’s a lot to think about in advance. Make the most of specialist pet travel companies that can help – from handling paperwork to sourcing pet-friendly airlines. Taking your dog to the USA is relatively straightforward. She will need a vet’s examination no more than 10 days before you go, with a letter from your vet saying she’s fit to travel on a plane. Some US States also require a rabies vaccination. Your dog will need a travel crate for the journey. Do make sure you buy one that’s big enough for her to stand up, lie down, stretch out, and turn around in. She’ll be in it for some time so it’s essential she’s comfortable. It’s very important your dog is familiar with the crate too. Start getting her used to it now; introduce toys, food and treats to build a positive association early. For the journey, be sure to use bedding that she’s recently used at home so that it has a familiar and reassuring scent. I’m sure she’ll be fine and love her new life in America! WORDS BY DAVID KID JENSEN

Let’ s Rock Shrewsbury THE RETRO SHOW

I had a truly poptastic weekend in Shropshire recently co-hosting Let’s Rock Shrewsbury, the Retro Show with Pat Sharp. It’s a movable festival, rocking and roaming the land far and wide for fans of the 80s and lovers of some of the most entertaining stars who bring the music of yesteryear to the fore with some electronic wizardry and clever musicianship. Some of the outstanding musicians graced the stage, while 10,000 fans danced and sang along to the cascade of hits. Among the entertainers were Nick Heywood, once of Haircut 100, now an established solo star, who had the good grace not to play songs from his great new solo release, which is out in few weeks. His set in Shrewsbury consisted of his impressive repertoire of hits and yet more hits. The ever-popular Tony Hadley did a full hour of hits from his spell as lead vocalist with Spandau Ballet, as well as several cover versions which reminded us just what a treasure he’s become. Nick Kershaw was at first unrecognizable with his white goatee, but once he plugged in and strummed his way into Wouldn’t it be Good!, there was no mistaking that guitar sound of his. Jaki Graham was her usual foot-stomping self and Billy Ocean topped the bill with unforgettable dynamics and a brilliant back-up band. Other fine hit-makers included Altered Images, Heaven 17, The Real Thing and local faves, T Pau. I had a ball and hope you’ll be able to join the Retro show sometime over the next few months.

OLLY MURS

AN OPEN AIR CONCERT AT SANDOWN PARK RACECOURSE + 10 TH AUGUST 2017 + Join in the conversation online #JCLive17 writing about what’s been actually, genuinely happening was the right thing to do. I’m just really happy that I did this album and the fact that it went to number 1 and people really like it. At the start of the year, I was like ‘what am I gonna write about? What am I gonna do?’ and I’m really happy that I did this honest album. I’ve always been an artist, I wrote most of my hits, so this album was just an opportunity to do something different and to keep my fans interested and show them Q: What do you reckon has been the appeal of your a different side to me. I’m really happy and proud of music and yourself to make you the most successful how well it’s done and I can’t wait for people to hear the male artist to ever come from the X Factor? second track from the album next year with the other Olly: I dunno, I’d like to think that I’ve done some great single that we’re gonna releas. It’s exciting. songs and think that people love what I do… I mean, this album’s probably the most heartbreaking, most Q: You’re undertaking a massive headline arena tour honest album that I’ve done, but I think with previous in March, and obviously in the summer, you’ve got a albums, you know, I have a lot of fun. My albums are huge run of outdoor shows that will see you come to happy and people enjoy listening to them, and with this Sandown Park on 10th August. How do they vary in album in particular it’s still happy, still got lots of that terms of what you put into them and what you get vibe on it. It’s just luck, you know, that people like me out of them, from the indoors to the outdoor? and people have bought my albums and I’m very lucky Olly: I think it’s fun, it’s really fun being outside and that they do because it doesn’t always happen like that, you know, the show that we’re doing at Sandown Park is so I’m very very grateful. a different gig for me. I’ve never done anything like this before, I’ve done racecourse gigs in the past but not this Q: You mention this is your most honest album to sort of size. I’m really proud to do it and it gives me the date, so do you feel you are constantly progressing as chance to go to different places in the UK that I haven’t an artist and songwriter through your albums? been before, do different kind of shows, do something Olly: Yeah 50/50. I mean, I did run out of ideas, I slightly different. I can’t wait... I mean, what’s better? wanted to do something different and I felt with this Go to a racecourse during the day, I can have a little album I just didn’t know where to go next. I felt that flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the Q: Your new album ’24 Hrs’ is your 4th consecutive number 1 album. That must be a great feeling? Olly: Amazing. I’m very proud of that, you know... to have 4 consecutive number 1 albums is brilliant. I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would’ve got this far, so, absolutely delighted that we’ve managed to get 4 consecutive, like you say, number 1 albums. I’s really really amazing, so thank you. Amazing.

evening. Perfect. Q: It must be great being able to get out and play to your fans, essentially in their areas, without them having to travel a few hours into a major city Olly: These are shows where you get to see the real people; they are days out, family days at racecourses. It’s slightly different, you know. Over the years, I’ve done loads of different festivals, all these commercial festivals that people go to every year. I just feel that going to a racecourse is so different and people get to see a different vibe, different set, different sound, different people. You know, some of these people who come to the racecourse are people who maybe have never been to a music festival before, so it’s nice. I just thought it’s refreshing for me to do a gig like this. I mean, I’m really looking forward to having a day out with my

mates at Sandown Park racecourse as well as everyone else and then at the end of it, get up and sing an hour, an hour and a half, two hour show, whatever it is, and just have some fun and have a great night. Q: You attended a Jockey Club Live show last summer with your friends; did you have a good time? Was that one of the things that helped sway you to play The Jockey Club Live events? Olly: Yeah, I went last year for my mate’s birthday. It was such a good day out and a couple of my mates have been to a few gigs there before and loved it. It’s a great day out and all my mates are gonna come along and we’re gonna make a proper day of it. Hopefully, it’s a lovely day, weather-wise, not too wet and people will have a really nice summer and really enjoy it.

UPDATE

Every two hours, a baby is born with a heart defect. It is the most common and deadly anomaly in babies under 1 year old” Gabby Logan talks from the heart in this month’s BBC Lifeline appeal with Tiny Tickers, the babies’ heart charity. Sports presenter Gabby Logan is a true heart hero for local heart baby, Rocco Parsley, and the inspirational little charity Tiny Tickers. “Every two hours, a baby is born with a heart defect. It is the most common and deadly congenital anomaly in babies under 1 year old. By providing specialist training to sonographers, we can identify problems early and save lives.” Gabby in support of charity Tiny Tickers. Tiny Tickers is leading the way in early detection and diagnosis of heart defects through its expert sonographer training. In the last couple of years, Tiny Tickers has trained in over 65 hospitals across the UK, supporting nearly 600 sonographers, meaning that every year, more than 100,000 babies will be scanned by a Tiny Tickers expert-trained sonographer. Jan Forster, consultant congenital sonographer and Tiny Tickers trainer said: “The Tiny Tickers training is really important, as it provides specialist cardiac training to small groups of sonographers on their own equipment in their own

+

department. We have had really positive feedback from the training. The sonographers are really keen to be involved and feel much more confident in obtaining the views required and in recognising when an abnormality is present”. When Lisa Parsley from Esher, was told at her 20 week scan that her baby had a heart defect, it devastated her and husband Jon’s world. But it meant that, the second he was born, there could be a plan put into place so that Rocco could get the life-saving treatment he needed. “I have no doubt my sonographer saved my baby’s life,” reflects Lisa. Lisa continues, “You didn’t need to be a medical expert to see he was very ill. He was born electric blue. Doctors immediately fought to put a stent in his tiny body, and at 6 days old, our baby boy had open heart surgery”. A truly heart-breaking time for the Parsley family, Lisa, Jon and their two older boys, Jack and Frankie. But thanks to their sonographer, it’s a story with a happy ending. Now, Rocco is a healthy, happy, football-mad 3 year old. The Parsley family will be sharing their story on BBC Lifeline this Sunday, presented by sports presenter Gabby Logan, who recently met the family. Gabby says: “I’m supporting Rocco, a true heart hero. Watch his brave battle on BBC Lifeline” .

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.

In the past month, there have been several serious IT -related issues which have impacted the NHS, county councils and British Airways with pretty devastating effects. The software attack that hit the NHS was a malware attack with WannaCry ransomware. The malware blocks your machine and encrypts your data, stating that you must pay a ransom to gain access to your data. This software is very effective as, generally, there is no removal process or way around it. You have only two options, recover your data from an earlier backup or pay the ransom. This malware attack is generally on machines using old versions of Microsoft Windows, such as Windows 95, 98, XP, ME, XP and Vista. These are all operating systems for which Microsoft has stopped issuing security updates and support, and they are vulnerable. If you have a computer using any of these operating systems, you should seriously consider upgrading to a version which has the security updates, such as Windows 7, 8 and 10. The backing up of your system can be done in a number

of ways, with the most popular being to the Cloud, as this is automatic and requires no user intervention. We have a consumer and small business support package called Total Care which includes Cloud backup. Further details can be found on http://www.tecres. co.uk/home-support Data Recovery Services We mentioned in our last update that this is the season for failed hard drives, and in conjunction with one of our recovery partners, we are now able to offer very good value, fixed-price data recovery. If you have suffered a drive or media failure, please get in touch, as we have a very compelling option Apple update Apple has recently announced that the new software updates planned for this autumn will only work with iPhone 6 and above and iPad Air and newer models. What does this mean for you if you have an older device? In short, you will not see any improvements or bug fixes, and you leave yourself vulnerable to the likes of the above-mentioned malware. Have an enjoyable summer.
