Welcome to September

Welcome to our September issue of Look Local. I do hope you have all enjoyed a good summer and that you’re feeling refreshed and ready to step into the new autumn season… Here’s hoping for an ‘Indian Summer’ as the schools head back

to start the new term, and the more senior students head off to Uni or work experience, Gap Years or even new jobs! It’s always a time of year for new beginnings and I wish you all the very best with these new adventures, whatever they may be! There are lots of events to look forward to this month, including a fabulous Food Festival taking place at near-by Painshill Park, which should make for a really nice day out. We also hear about a celebrity led, charity Yard Sale taking place locally and we have a couple of fun, but very different, book competitions too!

THE HERBERT PROTOCOL Safe & Found

Imagine the situation. Your loved one, who has dementia, is missing. The police are in your home asking for personal details which, because you are sick with worry, you are finding hard to provide. Of course, they need to know your loved one’s name, height, any distinguishing marks, what they were wearing, mobile phone number, medication and the type of dementia they have. Also, if they have any money or a travelpass and, if they drive, the type of vehicle, registration number and colour. If they usually go for a daily walk the police need to know where they would normally go and, if they have gone missing before, where they were found. All this when the only thing you want is for your loved one to be found safe and well. Well help is at hand in the form of The Herbert Protocol. This initiative is named after George Herbert, who served in the Second World War and who was a veteran of the Normandy Landings. He lived with dementia

6 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019

and would repeatedly be reported missing from his care home whilst trying to return to his previous home. Surrey Police and its partners are part of the national Herbert Protocol initiative which is a risk reduction tool for people living with dementia who may be reported missing from home. The form has been designed to provide the police with as much information as possible, including a photograph, so they can start a search immediately. Most importantly it avoids putting families through the stress of having to answer questions from the police at an incredibly distressing and worrying time. The form can be downloaded from the Surrey Police website at www.surrey.police.uk/contact-us/herbertprotocol-missing-person-form/ and should be updated regularly and kept in a safe place. The police will only ask for the form if a person is reported missing but you will have peace of mind that, should the unthinkable happen, you are prepared. Annabelle Yeomans.

CLAYGATE FLOWER & VILLAGE SHOW

The 106th annual Show was formally opened by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Mary Sheldon, to get the show was underway. Families enjoyed the wonderful adult & junior exhibits including flowers, fruit, vegetables, art, photos, & various domestic delights. Beloved pets were entered into the Companion Dog Show. Vintage cars & motorcycles, entertainment in the arena including local dancers, musicians & displays of martial arts were enjoyed by all. As were farm & exotic animals, various sports and a glamorous stilt-walker. Younger children were all smiles as they participated in the Fancy Dress and Buggy Parade, judged by Hon Vice President Mike Aspel OBE, had their faces painted, played traditional games & watched Punch & Judy. This year there were over 1,000 exhibits, plus a tug-ofwar, food and drink, a Beer Garden, Prosecco & Gin Tent and so much more! 2019 President, John Baldwin presented cups and trophies to the many adult and junior prize winners for their exhibits. Over 5000 people visited this year and

10 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019

John “was very pleased by the high quality of exhibits & was especially pleased with the high number of nonvillage visitors, who he hoped would return next year.” 2019 sees the retirement of both Barry (Chairman) and Bonnie (Secretary) Fitzpatrick, the husband and wife team who have successfully led the organising committee for a decade. Sunday 7 July, the Claygate Country 5 Mile run, was held at the same venue. A record 500 runners participated, with fast times occurring, perhaps due to the cool, damp weather. This year’s event included the first participation of a wheelchair athlete, Claudia Burroughs from the 26.2 Road Runners Club. On Sunday Evening 14 July, at the same venue, The Claygate Recreation Ground, the tribute band, Britpop Reunion, entertained 700 guests. The Gig On The Rec has been going for 7 years now, and with the flower show forms the Big Claygate Village Weekend. Monies raised from both events will be used to fund local charities.

POEM CORNER Friends In recent times, we’ve lost some pals It can be quite depressing Our range of friendships old and new Requires some re-assessing Friends from our youth are rather few But those ones are the best They know so much about you No need to pass a test We value them for who they are And take them as they come We’ve known them all for ever And every one’s a chum But new friends too are lovely A bell rings straight away It’s always nice to listen To what they have to say So on the whole we’re happy The mix is on the mend There’ll never be a time to spare A person who’s your friend

Mark Bisson’s George: The Cat Who Lost His Confidence

Following a conversation with his daughter Gemma, who was struggling to find a book to support conversations with her young son regarding a perceived loss of confidence, which his teacher had brought to her attention, executive coach and mentor, Mark Bisson, known to his grandchildren as Grandad Fox, set about finding a solution. Gemma was searching for a book which would act as a conversation starter but not a parenting book. This got Mark thinking about his role as an executive coach and the topics clients brought to coaching sessions, which were similar to the ones Gemma and her parent friends were discussing. Mark, who lives in Esher, is also an author. So he looked at how fables can be used to create new awareness and insight in a fun and creative way. And so “George -The Cat Who Lost His Confidence” was born. The book is based on George, a cat that Mark and his family had when they lived in Bookham. As is retold in the fable, George who was a very large cat, used to sit with the foxes in the bushes at the end of the garden and it seemed like he had become an honorary fox. George the cat and Grandad Fox offer a delightful, child-friendly introduction to the world of selfconfidence - and more importantly how to combat the

14 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019

impact of negative comparisons by coaching your child to focus on their skills, talents and attributes. This enables them to gain new awareness and find their own solutions to the challenges they face. George is sad because he has lost his confidence and decides that he wants to be a fox instead. Grandad Fox helps George become aware of what he likes about himself. When Freddie the fox cub is drowning in the swimming pool, George needs to act quickly and show great courage in order to rescue him. Will George decide that he likes being himself after all? Mark uses his professional coaching expertise to help parents and carers support their children to think more clearly and guide them to organise their thoughts and feelings about the tricky topic of inner confidence.

COMPETITION TIME:

For a chance to win a copy of the book published on 28th August 2019 £16.99, answer the following question: What do Mark Bisson grandchildren call him? Email your answer & magazine area to ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk, before 14/09/19.

Explore Painshill Whether you are new to Painshill or a regular visitor, there is always something wonderful to explore around these landscaped gardens. Sample culinary delights from at least three stall holders When there is so much on offer, it’s difficult to choose just one type of food to try so why bother, try lots, in fact we challenge you to try at least three different types of food. We will have food from around the globe on offer, so you will be spoiled for choice. 6. Grab a drink from The Big Red Bus What’s better than sitting on a picnic blanket with a drink from the Big Red Bus and chatting with friends while you enjoy some fantastic food and music? 7.Come and say hello to the ‘My Elmbridge’ team who will there The council’s ‘My Elmbridge’ team will be on hand to answers any queries you have about the festival and about council services. Maybe you would like to work at the council or volunteer at one of the countryside conservation events, whatever your query they will be around to help you. SECOND HOPE FOR THAMES DITTON

Charlie Brooks, Thames Ditton resident, actress, Queen of the Jungle (and the Strictly dance floor!), entrepreneur and a “go to” person to get things done, is setting out to raise money for Second Hope. When Charlie Brooks lost her best friend to Breast Cancer a couple of years ago she decided that she wanted to do something to raise money for Second Hope, her friend’s favourite charity. Charlie approached a group of residents in a quiet road, near to where she lives in Thames Ditton and asked if they would get involved. And they said YES! So with Charlie at the helm, they have organised a Charity Yard Sale along the whole street for people to sell their old unwanted stuff to raise money for the charity of their choice. Charlie is going along with lots of her lovely stuff to raise money for Second Hope. So do go along and bag a bargain. As well as all the lovely pre-loved goods on sale, children will be getting involved by selling cakes and lemonade and The Dough Shack and Halloumi Bites,

20 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019

two local businesses, will be going along to support the event so you even have lunch while you are there. The whole event should have a real party atmosphere and it’s a great way to spend a fun few hours and for the local community to really come together to support some worthwhile causes. We hope this will become an annual event and that more roads in Thames Ditton will get involved. Watch this space! Charlie’s chosen charity, Second Hope works to; Raise awareness and increase knowledge of advanced breast cancer. Support and empower those diagnosed and living with advanced breast cancer. Campaign on behalf of those affected by advanced breast cancer. Fund research into advanced breast cancer. Second Hope is one of the only charities exclusively supporting those with Advanced Breast Cancer. For more information go to www.secondhope.co.uk. Look Local will be going along on the 8th. We hope to see you there!

Adventures with mud By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham gives an update on her own experience of garden transformation. Since the loss of our mature weeping willow, the garden has been redesigned and the new Garden built during the winter. I’ve been making slow progress with the planting since clients gardens have inevitably taken priority and spring is one of the very busiest times of year for a garden designer. The planting has gradually taken shape and just last week the planting was completed. The outdoor bath has been a great success and even in the colder evenings of spring it was like a warm cocoon and the views of the garden and the sky have been really enjoyable. In the hotter evenings we’ve had a cooler bath has been just right. Something I believe in really strongly is the importance of connecting with nature and being immersed in the garden and as far as this idea goes it certainly ticks those boxes. Positioned under the flowering cherry tree, so that the views up through the white blossom were particularly special in April. The bath can be enjoyed in all weathers a cool breeze when you’ve been in a hot bath is perhaps a less extreme take on the Swedish idea of asauna followed by snow? It’s a new idea so might not appeal to everyone. The oval lawn is already successful and it has been a real treat to enjoy thick green grass of the newly laid turf. I am sure daisies and selfheal will soon be back and they will be most welcome, but in the meantime the mower is certainly earning its keep. I’ve been experimenting with colours and have used reds and burnt oranges

yellows and mauves and even a claret red. Some of the old planting has been preserved as this area was adapted rather than newly designed, so there is already a sense of maturity in much of this upper level of the garden. The main terrace is adjacent to the lawn and faces south west to make the most of the afternoon sun. A couple of new steps lead from the grey sandstone set path down to the curved gravel path which takes you to a seating area. Hidden in a small copse of silvery willow (salix exigua is a small terrace that can be used for morning coffee in the sun or as a shady afternoon hideaway. The barefoot path is the newest part of the garden. Here a textured path with sand gravel and rocks provides a

barefoot experience, with a river of planting alongside which is inspired by the flow of a river. Blues, greys and soft tactile grasses make the ripples of the ‘river’. The idea is that it will be a sensory experience of full emersion in nature. The flowers are all chosen for bees and butterflies too and this area ajoins the existing pond so will be a haven for people and wildlife. At the moment it does look newly planted, so I’ll add photos to instagram and facebook as the planting develops. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk and her facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

We have no limit on how many times you can call us, although some customers do adopt a sheepish “err…hello it’s me again” attitude as they feel slightly embarrassed about the number of calls they make! By having Total Care, we also offer a best endeavour’s tablet and smart phone resolution service and assistance Free.

F IAT 500 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

Let me start with a question. How many Fiat 500s do you see, even on the shortest of journeys? More than one I would wager. Little wonder, because this wee treat has become a mega seller, a prized possession in the hotly contested city car market. Just like yonks ago, when the Volkswagen Beetle & the Mini jostled in truly vast numbers on roads of all types, bustling city highways & byways & remote village lanes giving both pleasure and economic relief. The same goes now for the Fiat 500. I am not the least bit surprised because, truth to tell, it is honest value for money, as appealing as can be, and bursting with the feel good factor; a loveable little looker. That is why I bought one & I am still running my shiny little black beauty after two years. Penny pincher that I am & a leggy six footer, the car more than adequately satisfies both my spendthrift attitude & my comfort levels for my daily demands.

And when weekends tempt Trophy Wife Delia & me to a seaside escape we have as much space in the boot as we need for our comfies & the tightest of promenade parking has never, ever been a problem. The vast worldly sales have left broad grins on the faces of the money men at Fiat’s Italian HQ - and they are figures that also give joy to the planners & design engineers whose genius richly deserves world admiration - and envy, among rival city car builders. The offbeat, funky & utterly desirable retro-looking petite 500 is now an established icon - I cannot envisage the slightest change in that situation for a really wholesome while to come. It revels in a choice of good, effective & efficient engines, the all round visibility is perfect & without hindrance, and the cabin comfort zone is as good as it can be, not so much for four, as for two people.Though the family weenies will be comfy enough in the back seats. Okay, okay, it is not a racer & won’t be a challenger to the Ferraris at the traffic lights change - but is quick enough to get you into the melee without getting in anybody’s way. Again, for tight wads, it’s residuals are high and if & when you decide to sell - maybe to buy another one you won’t lose too much lolly from your original forkout. And what’s more tempting than that? Specifications: Engines, three petrol, one diesel.Seven trim levels. Warranty three years/ 60,000 miles Prices £12,00-£23,380. Cheapest 1.2 69bhp Pop.My choice:Twin Air Lounge. 105bhp. Mpg 50.4. Speed 0-62mph 11s. Around 100mph.

LOCAL AUTHOR DELVES INTO SURREY’S MILITARY HISTORY

Since moving to Surrey in 2006, Paul Le Messurier has developed a keen interest in the local and military history of the surrounding area and the county of Surrey. After a career in business, he has now turned his attention to research and writing and has produced several articles on local history including a series on the Home Front during World War 2. Located immediately to the south of London, between the capital and the English Channel, Surrey has long played a significant part in the defence of the nation. During the Civil War, Surrey was firmly on the side of the Parliamentarians. From their base in Farnham Castle, they controlled the vital Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, near Guildford. The threat to the country during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars led to the construction of a line of semaphore signalling stations through Surrey to provide a fast communication link between London and Portsmouth. The line was replaced in 1822 by semaphore towers, some still existing today. In the late 19th century a 72-mile ring of fortified positions was established from Guildford through Surrey towards Kent and Essex, known as the London Defence Positions. In World War 1 The Queen's Royal West Surrey and the East Surrey Regiment lost over 13,000 men between them. On the first day of the battle of the

32 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019

Somme troops from the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment were waiting for the signal to go over the top. To encourage his men, Captain W.P. ‘Billie’ Nevill provided them with footballs which they kicked as they made their way across no-man’s land. Captain Nevill was killed but his men went on to capture the enemy trenches. During World War 2 Surrey was home to several RAF fighter squadrons. Due to its proximity to London, Surrey residents were to suffer at the hands of the German Luftwaffe during the blitz. Parts of Surrey, together with Kent and Sussex, became known as ‘Bomb Alley’, with Croydon suffering more damage than any other district during Hitler’s flying bomb campaign. “Surrey’s Military History” is a fascinating window into Surrey’s military history. It gives a terrific insight into the events, people and places that are Surrey’s Military Heritage. A thoroughly good read. £14.99, www.amberley-books.com

If you, or someone you know is needing some help of the digital nature, did you know that we have a Computer Buddy based here at Esher Library? Magdalena is here every Tuesday morning and you can make an appointment to spend up to an hour with her, hopefully solving your problems and making everything clear(er). She can help with setting up email addresses, on-line shopping, sorting out your digital photo albums, and many other computer-related problems. You can have up to 3 appointments, completely free of charge. Just pop into the library and talk to a member of staff or call on 0345 009 009 and ask to be put through to Esher Library. You do not have to be a library member but it is very simple to join. We just need to see something official showing your name and address, for example a driving licence, Council Tax or Utilities Bill or NHS medical card. School holidays may be over, but we know that many of you are still waiting for your summer holidays. Why not pop in and borrow a couple of books to read on the plane and by the pool. Alternatively, you can borrow e-books from the library (on all e-readers except Kindles) and you don’t even have to remember to return them on time as they will automatically vanish from your e-reader within 2 weeks. To see our catalogue of books, download the RBdigital app (from your usual provider), log in with your library card and PIN number and you’re away. You can also read many of the leading magazines at the same place. Completely free of charge. It’s not too late to complete the Summer Reading Challenge! The official last date is Saturday 14th September so if your children haven’t yet read their 6 books (story books, information books, graphic books, audio books, picture books) there is still time and they will have a shiny certificate to take into school & show their teachers. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to any children aged between 4 - 11.
