From the Editor

Welcome to our Festive Issue in Esher! Not only that, but this month is our 10th Anniversary Issue! TEN WHOLE YEARS and we are still here! I just want to THANK YOU all so much for your support and interest over the years. I realise that we haven’t been in Esher quite this long but we’re working on it! It is a total pleasure to produce your local magazine and I hope you continue to find it a useful resource in 2016 and beyond. We’re only here because of you and for you, so again, thank you very much, readers and advertisers, local charities and organisations alike. The only downside is that I’m ten years older (but maybe wiser) than

when we first met. Let’s just hope that love is blind ! Lots in this special issue, reflecting, as always, what a fantastically interesting little town we are privileged to serve, see here. I enjoyed meeting and chatting to a local author about his debut novel. It’s really very good and I highly recommend it. A perfect Christmas gift maybe? We visit a lovely new restaurant in the High Street, a great addition to the mix. Colourful Cows will be coming to a hill side near here really soon. Find out what that’s all about too! Our Look Local motoring man, Ted Macauley, has a great give away competition! And don’t forget to take a peak at the What’s on Page for lots of lovely local events! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2016. We look forward to returning in 2016 for another busy year!

I

know, we are very spoilt here in Esher with a wonderful selection of fine restaurants to choose from but the arrival of Giggling Squid is very good news for anyone out there like me who enjoys really good Thai food! Look Local was delighted to visit this lovely new restaurant, in easy reach of the High Street, (where Carluccio’s used to be, am I allowed to say that?) I feel sure this will soon be a regular place for many locals to dine out in style. The menu is clearly laid out and there is certainly a great selection. The tables are also beautifully laid out with a spotlessly clean feel. The white china plates are divided into sections which really adds to the presentation of the food. Offering different menus for lunch time and the evening, this restaurant is a great destination for either; the lunch Thai tapas sound delicious, with set selections or separate choices to combine yourself, but as we were here for the evening, they will just have to wait for another day! I must confess that in some Thai restaurants, I have found it quite hard to work out good combinations, but this menu is very easy to read and everything is clearly

N E W E S H E R ! !

displayed. There is a great selection of starters, including many favourites, such as Seared Scallops, Chicken and Prawn Satay, Thai Fish Cakes, and Vegetable Tempura which all sounded wonderful but the Salt and Peppered Squid caught my eye and is marked as a Top Dish for good reason! There are also soups and salads which could certainly make good choices for starting your meal too. The rest of the menu is also very well presented, with lots of fresh fishy options, a whole array of Thai curries, stir fries, duck, lamb and beef dishes too, and of course, rice and noodle mixes to go with whatever you decide to eat. I think there is something here to satisfy most tastes, and our meals were beautifully presented and tasted truly wonderful. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the interior design is modern and tasteful, the staff friendly and polite. Portion sizes were generous and the food was, in my opinion, highly authentic. Look Local welcomes Giggling Squid to Esher High Street. I will soon return to try those lunch time tapas! Thank you for a wonderful evening. Please see page five for contact/booking details.

A FAST PACED

DEBUT NOVEL FROM A FORMER CITY BROKER

AND A FRESH NEW VOICE IN THE WORLD OF CRIME FICTION!

F

or a while, local author CT Sullivan has been fascinated by the phrase ‘reasonable force’ Over the years, there have been several high profile cases where home owners have defended their own property and their families from unwanted intruders, only then to find that in the eyes of the law, they are themselves in the wrong! It is a complicated area which so easily could affect the most law-abiding citizen. This great new book visits this exact scenario… I started the book last weekend and couldn’t put it down. It really is a captivating read. I asked the author how he went about putting a book like this together. I wondered if he had the whole story line worked out in his head before he started to write? ‘To a certain degree, I had a basic plan and the plot, but as you write, the story evolves, as do the characters.’ Are any of the characters within the book based on real people? ‘Yes, some are, but again, they also develop as the story moves along.’ It takes a long time from concept to published book and I can only imagine the hours of work which must go into producing a book such as this.

I really enjoyed the style of writing and the story is, as I said, totally captivating. If you are a member of a book club, this book really should go on your list; it is meticulously researched and very thought-provoding, the perfect combination for a good discussion. A tale about ordinary people who find themselves in an extraordinary situation. Before turning his hand to writing, the author spent twenty five years in the City as a foreign exchange broker, but since then has had a whole variety of very different jobs; these include driving a lorry, landscape gardening, a singer in pubs, a film extra and musical comedy entertainer, giving him ample time to hone his craft as an author! As you can imagine, he is a very interesting chap, and I’m sure his eclectic career path has given him a wide range of life experiences to draw from in his writing. I look forward to reading more from this man. Published by Pegasus Elliot Mackenzie, it is available from Barton’s Book Shop in Leatherhead, Waterstone’s Book Shop in Guildford and, of course, amazon.co.uk on line. It really would make a fantastic Christmas gift for almost anyone who enjoys a good book. Thank you very much, CT Sullivan.

A DOG IS FOR LIFE...

...not just for Christmas.

Coined by the Dogs Trust back in the 1970s, this simple but effective slogan says it all. And now December is upon us, thoughts are turning to the perfect Christmas present. A dog, like a child, is a huge long-term responsibility. While cuddling a cute puppy on Christmas Day sounds wonderful, they will still need the same amount of love, care and attention when the holidays are over. So, if you’re thinking of spending this Christmas with a new canine chum, please consider the following before taking the plunge: Food: Dogs must have a well-balanced doggy (not human) diet for optimum health, along with constant access to fresh clean water. Friends: Dogs are sociable animals and should have the opportunity to spend time with other sociable dogs being just, well, dogs! Family: As owners, you become their ‘parents’, which means allowing them to fit into your home life as one of the family, with a loving and secure environment and their own doggy bed to retire to. You’ll also need to guide and train them. Fun: Regular exercise is an absolute must. Once or twice a day at a minimum, whatever the weather… Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

s most of us know, Gurkhas are world famous soldiers, highly prized in the British Army and known for their bravery and courage. They come from the mountainous country of Nepal which nestles in the Himalayas, bordering Tibet in the North and India on its southern foothills. Nepal has many geographical regions and social influences and this is reflected in the preparation of the food, which varies from region to region. The common factor is the use of spices and flavourings, such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, peppers, chillies, cumin, coriander, cilantro and fresh herbs. Combined with the fact that produce at the Gurkha Diner is delivered daily, this means that the end result is superb! There are seasonal changes to their menu, the mark of truly fresh food, I always think. The chef at The Gurkha Diner does not use any artificial food colourings or flavourings. The food looks and tastes more natural than most, and even the mango chutney and the mint sauce served with crispy fresh poppadums is freshly and reassuringly home-made! This, and the friendly polite service and very comfortable surroundings, is why Look Local highly recommends Gurkha Diner for your gastronomical Indian pleasures!

D Y L A N

Now in his 75th year, it’s impressive to note that a man, once regarded as an unofficial ambassador for his generation is still rockin’ and rollin’ ‘Just‘Like A Rolling Stone’. Bob Dylan is an undisputed heavy weight to the ‘counter culture’ generation and will forever be regarded as a prime influence on anyone in the 60s who picked up a guitar and plectrum and then discovered just how powerful a message can be when expressed by a latter day troubadour. He was also the one who courted huge controversy at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall and London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1965 by going ‘electric’, much to the well documented annoyance of his army of folk music purists who felt he had committed a kind of treason by embracing amplified music. Oh the shock and the horror when he first plugged in, but upon hearing the opening strains of ‘Like A Rolling Stone’, possibly the greatest pop song ever written, or the Jimi Hendrix version of ‘All Along The Watchtower’, the objectors to his new direction were eventually silenced and Bob was right all along. Timeless classics like ‘Masters Of War’, ‘Blowin In The Wind, ‘A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall and ‘The Times They Are A Changing’ all became global anthems. Dylan has recorded no less than 36 studio albums and has written over 100 books including his own first volume of his amazing memoirs entitle Chronicles. It’s an essential read, not just by his fans but by anyone who cares about the development of rock n’ pop from it’s beginnings. And now, just when you thought you’d seen and heard everything about the great man, along comes a terrific new collection of previously unseen black and white photgraphs entitled ‘Bob Dylan NYC 1961 – 1964’. The pictures were taken long before Dylan became a household name and convey atmosphere of the times and the natural charisma of the man. You can’t help but wonder how life might have been for Bob before his destiny in music was sealed, and just how did a farm boy from rural Minnesota became such an essential figure in the annals of pop. This latest venture is published by Rizzoli International Publications at £22.50.

n November, leading National Hunt jockeys Richard Johnson and Sam Twiston-Davies helped launch Surrey Hills CowParade 2016 at Sandown Park, Esher. Racegoers attending Sandown’s Countryside Day discovered how hundreds of brightly-coloured cows are set to decorate the hills, farms, towns, schools and popular landmarks across Surrey next year as the county takes part in the world’s biggest public arts event. The jockeys unveiled a chrome-painted cow which next year will be seen at numerous locations around the county. CowParade Leader Tim Metson says the chrome cow, painted by metal work specialists Spray Chrome UK, will reflect the landscape of the Surrey Hills. Organisers hope to encourage schoolchildren, celebrities, sportsmen, businesses and charities to take part in a mammoth fund-raising event for good causes that will promote tourism and business. The idea of the CowParade is that individuals, companies and schools will sponsor a life-size cow and either decorate it themselves, or bring in an artist to do it. The cows will then be displayed around the county before being herded to the inaugural Surrey Hills Food, Drink and Music Festival next summer, where they will be auctioned off. Those judged to be extra special will be auctioned at a glittering ceremony held at a unique London location later in the year. In a novel move, while the models are being decorated and moved around, their location can be tracked via a speciallycreated app. The cow owners can choose their own charity and the auction proceeds will be split between that and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund, a charity established to conserve and protect the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, leaving a legacy for generations to come. The fund supports local community projects and enterprise schemes that benefit and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape. Sandown Park Racecourse, part of the Jockey Club Racecourse group, will be donating proceeds from their cow to the Injured Jockey Fund. CowParades will be staged at several of Sandown’s high-profile race meetings during 2016. Thousands of people attended Sandown’s inaugural

Countryside Day on Remembrance Sunday, with the CowParade launch being supported by the Surrey branch of the Royal British Legion. Internationally-renowned artist Alexander Creswell, who is Patron of Surrey Hills CowParade says: “The CowParade is a brilliant platform for generating creativity and for bringing together businesses, schools and individuals across Surrey. It will also be a huge amount of fun! Together, we will be creating a massive art installation, with the potential to raise lots of money for good causes and for the Surrey Hills Trust Fund in particular.” Cow Parade organisers are keen for primary schools to get involved and will provide information to help them get started, with ideas for competitions and suggestions for sponsorship. A ‘mini-moo’ or calf-sized version will be available for schools to decorate and then get the chance to auction it off to raise money for the school or chosen charity. Said Tim Metson: “We have already secured offers of support from key players including the National Trust, schools and Surrey businesses. The event will be driven by Coverwood Lakes & Farm and Surrey Hills Enterprises and has support from Surrey Community Foundation and the backing of Surrey County Council. “It will give sponsors the chance to connect with millions of people, and offers a huge, unique PR opportunity that should generate international interest. The cows will be bought later this year and decorated by celebrities and local organisations in the spring of 2016. They will then be auctioned off for charity in the summer of next year at an event coinciding with the Surrey Hills Food, Drink and Music Festival at Coverwood Lakes & Farm.” CowParade was born in Switzerland in 1998 and has been staged in more than 80 cities and towns worldwide. Over the years, 3,000 cows have been decorated by more than 5,000 artists. CowParade New York had 450 cows and was seen worldwide by 45 million people. The highest-grossing cow was created by designer John Rocha for CowParade Dublin in 2003 – studded with thousands of pieces of Waterford Crystal, it was auctioned for $146,000 – quite a lot of moo-lah indeed. For more information on how to take part, call the Surrey Hills CowParade team on 01483 661150 or visit the website at www.cowparadesurreyhills.com.

f you love where you live but need more space, you don’t need to move to achieve it. With a little help from L&E, the Framptons have transformed their tired kitchen into a light filled space. The Frampton family absolutely loved their threestorey townhouse & it’s easy to see why, with its stunning location just moments from the centre of Twickenham. As the children grew bigger though, they realised they were spending all their time in the dark & cramped kitchen & started to dream of a light-filled family space, & that’s when they met L&E (Lofts & Extensions). Charlie remembers, “We loved the house but it was always dark. We changed colours & tried to lighten it up, but nothing worked. We also realised we were living in the kitchen with everybody congregating there - it was our kitchen & lounge but it was really cramped. We never thought it would be possible to knock down the whole supporting wall but L&E came round and said that they could do it.” Bi-fold doors out onto the garden was also on the Framptons’ dream list but again because of the structure

of their property they were unsure it would be possible. Charlie was incredibly focused on the project & went out to tender with a lot of builders to see what could be achieved. The winning combination of a creative architect with a highly competitive & detailed quote meant that L&E were appointed to make the project a reality. The L&E team were so impressive that Charlie decided to make the most of having them on site & they also refitted several stunning bathrooms, adding little luxury touches like strip lighting & spacious & stylish built-in wardrobes in the master bedroom. “It gets a bit addictive,” laughed Charlie “& when your house is already overrun with builders we thought it made sense to do as much as possible in one go.” So, all this work must have gone over budget? “No,” smiles Charlie. “We paid for the extra work we decided to have done, but everything else came in spot on where they said it would.” It is hard to believe that this light-flooded, spacious room was once dark & cramped - the new configuration has given the Framptons the sociable family space they were desperate for & the can-do attitude of L&E means they’ve achieved something they never thought possible.

FESTIVE

GINGERBREAD INGREDIENTS • 125g essential Waitrose Unsalted Dairy Butter • 100g dark brown muscovado sugar • 4 tbsp golden syrup • 325g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 2 tsp ground ginger • 5 tbsp icing sugar • 3 tbsp Cooks’ Homebaking Sprinkles, such as White Chocolate Stars, Silver Balls, Pearly 100s & 1000s

METHOD Preheat the oven to 170ºC, Gas Mark 3. Line 2 large baking trays with baking parchment. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup together in a medium saucepan, stirring occasionally, then remove from the heat. Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ginger into a bowl, then stir the melted ingredients into the dry ingredients to make a stiff dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and roll to a thickness of about 5mm. Stamp shapes out of the dough using Waitrose Cooking Christmas Cookie Cutters or cut round festive templates. Place the shapes onto the lined baking trays and bake in batches for 9–10 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven. While still warm, use a skewer or chopstick to make any holes that you may need to hang up the biscuits with ribbon or string. Leave to cool completely on a wire rack. Mix together the icing sugar with a splash of water to make thick icing then drizzle or pipe over the biscuits and decorate with sprinkles. The gingerbread biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

COOK’S TIPS Dust the cutters with flour to help stop the dough sticking when stamping out shapes.

AWARD-WINNING LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER SELINA BOTHAM

SHARES HER CHRISTMAS GARDEN TIPS

Gardens for Christmas should be easy to take care of and attractive. In winter, a well-designed garden relies on its backbone of structure and shape so that the ‘bare bones’ are pleasing and restful and still beautiful during the winter. Views from the house are particularly important and vistas and focal points really come into their own at this time of year. A few winter flowers close to places you walk most in the winter are also well worth including. There always seem so many more urgent things to do than garden at this time of year, so my best advice is to relax and enjoy the festivities! Cold weather will have stopped plants from growing, so the good news is that the weeds won’t be getting worse. So… just enjoy all the lovely shapes in your garden which will we hope benefit from a dusting of frost and snow to add a special bit of Christmas magic. Garden lighting is a real bonus at this time of year so that you can

still see the garden when you get home from work, and of course on Christmas Day itself, you and your guests will be able to enjoy the garden lighting. You may need a quick tidy-up and perhaps pick some evergreen foliage and festive berries to decorate the house, but that’s probably all you’ll really have time for, as there are so many things to be done, friends and family to entertain and presents to be wrapped. Happy Christmas, all!

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW MINI-CO OPER FIVE D O OR

The Beatles had one each. And Hollywood movie star & West End producer Kevin Spacy forked out nearly £100,000 for the last one of its class ever built. Not only that, there are 470 clubs in its name in the UK & 260 worldwide. So, what is it? The Mini. That’s what. And you’ve only got to be commuting from Stoke D’Abernon station to see them in their iconic ranks glistening petitely in the neighbouring car showroom. It is amazing that from a sketch by imaginative dreamer Sir Alec Issigonis, pencilled on a napkin in a Swiss cafe, Mini mania has swamped the globe, with more than three million sold since BMW, the fathers of autmotive efficiency & finesse, adopted the brand in 2001. From its humble beginnings, with its UK HQ in Longbridge & Cowley in the Midlands, it is now manufactured in Australia, Spain, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Uruguay, Venezuela & Yugoslavia, with other countries jostling to cash in on its popularity. I have to confess I was not really a fan until I gave one a trial run or two. I was too wrapped up in my own treasured Fiat 500’s enchanting manners & style

& price to contemplate allowing a sort of rival to grab my attention. We are fortunate that Surrey, with its hills, lanes, motorways & townships, abounds with terrain varyingly suitable for a thorough once-over of a car on our wish-list. The lightweight motor propels the car into the tightest turns & bends with a quality of grip that enhances a feeling and confidence of safety-on-thego, & all with the sort of throaty engine sound that is music to any fanatic’s ears. With the new five-door option with a stretch to the bodywork, there is ample legroom in the back, with a 278-litre boot that certainly took me by surprise, & while it falls well short of bigger car style & comfort, it is at a practical level. My feeling is that the latest Mini hatch, the five-door offering, is at the top end price of £23,050, a good few quid or two more than I am prepared to pay, confessed skinflint that I am. One thing in its favour, despite its price tag, & though there are vast legions of them, they resist depreciation. So in that sense, they eke out as fairly cheap over a time. A new layer of super-smooth engines fail to heave the Mini to the top of

its class, economy-wise - or give it the lowest CO2 emissions - but in the balance between performance & economy, they are pretty formidable. And, boy, does it handle terrifically smartly, as evidenced by its starring role alongside Michael Caine in “The Italian Job” - the Turin sewers chase by the way filmed in Coventry. The diesel versions, I’m told, are not nearly so quick & nippy - but they still revel in BMW-inspired refinement and are hugely economical. A problem is that if you are hooked on options, extras such as navigation or adjustable dampers or anything else to add an edge of sophistication, you can end up with an eye-wateringly expensive final bill for your fancies. I have to say, looks-wise, the long front nose is a wee bit droopy....or am I being too sniffy? Incidentally, I have a great prize to give away - forty-quids-worth of a Mini Manual telling you how to restore, overhaul & perform all sorts of tasks to give your Mini back its zest. Specification: My preferred Mini-Cooper Five door. Engine 2-litre. BHP 136. Top speed 129mph.0-60 in 8.2 secs. MPG 60.1.Price £16.085.
