Happy birthday to us Happy birthday to us Happy birthday, dear Look Local Happy birthday to us! Eleven years old and still looking as fresh as a daisy, thanks to our wonderful Look Local designer, Kirsty Hamilton! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal readers and advertisers who continue to support and hopefully enjoy Look Local. And a special thank you must go to my wonderful Look Local team who continue to support me on an ‘over & above’ basis, you know who you are! X We look forward to bringing you community information and local services again next year. In fact, here’s to the next eleven, I say! ‘It’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas’ in Esher! Christmas lights are appearing, and the heart-warming sound of Christmas carols can be heard ringing around the village from time to time. Heatwave or anow is the burning question, of course, as the warmest year on record comes to a close. My plan to get ahead with my Christmas shopping has worked well, and I’ll soon be ready for the big day. Normally, I haven’t even started by this time, but I really wanted to avoid my normal last minute panics. Just got to get down to some serious wrapping now and I must remember to order my turkey too! Good luck with your own preparations and do remember to support our wonderful local businesses who offer a fantastic selection of goodies. This festive issue of Look Local will take us through until the end of January, when we look forward to launching into 2017 for another busy year in Esher & Claygate. Wising you a wonderful Christmas & a happy and healthy New Year. Until next time, take care.

AT T E N T I O N TO DETAIL

Chloe and Bill Michael bought their five bedroom home at the end of 2010, knowing they were going to totally refurbish the property to create a modern family home. Having previously used a builder who needed supervision, they were apprehensive to start another project but when Bill and Chloe discovered they were expecting their third child they decided they wanted to create another bedroom, convert the garage and remodel the driveway. Chloe had seen L&E’s advertorials and was so impressed by these, she contacted them for a quote. To ensure that nothing was lost in translation between myself and the builder, I instructed an architect,” Chloe explains. “It turns out that I needn’t have worried, the L&E builders were so ahead of the game at every turn.” “What initially struck me about L&E was that they were completely transparent. There were no hidden costs and everything was sensibly priced.” The couple received quotes from other builders but liked the professionalism of L&E. “Having had the previous building work to get the house just as we wanted it, we needed assurance that L&E would ensure there would be no damage to ceilings, glass splashbacks, glass doors etc. I am amazed to say, we got through the whole loft and garage conversion without any

breakages. The guys were so careful!” “They were completely on top of the project and ahead of schedule. We chatted regularly about the finish we wanted and the guys checked details with me throughout the project, which I really appreciated. They considered our family at every stage, creating a tailored space that suits us all.” Chloe project-managed the build herself. “I’m cursed with an eye for detail, but the team were happy to change things to ensure that I was happy. Nothing was too much trouble,” she smiles. “The roof tiles, for example, are all different colours and the guy that laid them has done a beautiful job.”

One of the advantages of using a company like L&E is that the team are often able to undertake other work whilst on site. “They are really flexible and accommodating,” Chloe explains. “All extra work they did was always very reasonable. I never felt that they were taking advantage, just because they were on site and knew that I’d just agree to things for convenience sake.” The family are delighted with their loft conversion and their experience of working with L&E. “I have been recommending L&E to friends – in fact, a friend of mine has just instructed them. I am currently planning my next project with L&E.”

ASK BRUCE:

TELLY ADDICTS

This month, reader Jan Harding explains that her dog enjoys watching TV, especially wildlife or animal programmes, and asks how well can he see it and can dogs only see in black and white? Jan’s dog is not alone, as many dogs love the telly! Today’s modern televisions are much clearer than those from the past, as they produce more frames per second. Decades ago, a dog watching TV would have seen a series of flashing images, but the picture will be almost as clear as if they were seeing it for real. This is why a dog may bark or show interest if they see another animal on TV. In fact, some dogs have even been known to look behind the TV to see where the animal has gone! It has been proven that dogs can actually see in colour, although their range is more limited compared to ours. Colour vision comes from cone cells in the eyes. Dogs have two cells, but humans have three. So a dog’s colour range is largely yellow and blue, whereas ours is the full spectrum. How a dog behaves in front of the television also stems from their personality. For example, an outgoing terrier is more likely to bark at another dog on the screen than a chilled Golden Retriever. I once looked after a terrier that loved the Discovery Channel and barked furiously whenever other animals appeared! Tec Res Christmas

Gift Ideas.. .

This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, we thought it may be useful to highlight some of the items that will be featuring under the Christmas tree this year. Custom-built PCs are immensely popular, as they provide exactly the size, shape, specification and power required, built from the highest quality components available at the most advantage prices. Please come and discuss your needs with us. Tablets - there is an ever-increasing number of 7-10” tablets on the market. The Apple iPads are clear market leaders of the premium product/premium price area. We also have Android tablets from £90.00 and Windows tablets starting at £135.00. The Windows tablets run the full Windows 10 edition, making them ideal for all members of the family. Computer Upgrades Solid State Hard Drive (SSD) is the upgrade your computer has been waiting for. Due to dramatic price cuts in the cost of SSDs, now is a great time to upgrade. Having an SSD in your machine will speed up the loading and running performance hugely: we have just upgraded a machine which was taking 4.5 minutes to boot, but with the SSD installed, it now boots in seconds. Costs start from £45.00 and we can install and copy all your data across if required. Graphics cards make the perfect gift,. They are easy

to fit and the benefit to the users can be huge, making graphics and games run much more smoothly. With prices ranging from £40 to many hundreds of pounds, we are happy to advise on your needs. Smart Home - turn your home Smart. With easy-touse and flexible remote connection devices, you can control your heating system, lighting control, domestic appliances and even CCTV and security monitoring. As the items all speak a “common language”, you can build your kit bit by bit and mix different devices to create the optimum solution. Gamers mice, mats and keyboards - yes, we know it sounds odd, but we have a selection of high performing mice, keyboards and mouse mats specifically for the gamers out there. They are fully adjustable, with some keyboards being illuminated - it could be the answer to that present dilemma. Total Care - allow us to look after your computer fully. We will protect it from viruses and malware, back up its data to our cloud and provide unlimited remote and workshop support for just £120 + VAT per year Notebooks - with machines starting from £170, we have a solution to fit every budget and need... small machines, gamers machines, ultra books, Windows 7, Windows 10 and Macs, even previously used machines.

stablished in 1923 at The Wheatsheaf in Esher, Esher Rugby Club has long been a huge part of our community. With some exciting developments at the club, Dominic Raab MP recently visited to discover the following news. We’ve recently launched Walking Rugby, a national health and fitness scheme, inviting men and women over 50 years old to play a specially adapted noncontact form of rugby. Sessions run 10am-12pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, and there is a small cost of £2.50 each, followed by refreshments. Esher RFC staff have recently undertaken volunteer training for speed testing to support the traffic police in stopping people driving too fast along our local roads and helping reduce road accidents.

We had 2400 spectators at our 35th fireworks display on 4th November. Many came through our affiliation with local schools. If you would like your non-profit organisation to receive additional income from selling tickets for our display on 3rd November 2017, do get in touch. Step aside, The Oval and Vauxhall! We are immensely proud to have signs now on both platforms, promoting Hersham as the ‘Home of Esher Rugby Club’, sponsored by local developers Bonnar Allan. Halfway through the season, our First XV are currently 7th in National League One. If you’d like to come and enjoy a pre-match sit down lunch (from £20pp) or a homemade burger or pie and a pint whilst cheering for the Lions, then please have a look at our website for information.

Claygate Scouts

Reduce waiting list

1st Claygate Scouts commit to reducing the waiting list, as national study shows that Scouting and Guiding provide ‘mental health boost for life’

art-analysis of a study of 10,000 people, known as the National Child Development Study, found ex-members of Scouts and Guides were 15% less likely than other adults to suffer anxiety or mood disorders at the age of 50. The findings indicated that programmes that help children develop skills, such as self-reliance and teamwork, and encourage being active outdoors, may have lifelong benefits. Lead researcher Prof Chris Dibben of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Geosciences, said: “We expect the same principles would apply to the Scouts and Guides of today, and so, given the high costs of mental ill-health to individuals and society, a focus on voluntary youth programmes such as the Guides and Scouts might be very sensible.” 1st Claygate Scouts cannot meet the demands of

the local community and have been holding a long waiting list for a number of years. With the Scout Centre used every night of the week for two sections of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and the band, there is currently no space for another group to be created. However, an opportunity has arisen for the Scout Centre to change the layout of the current building in Oaken Lane, creating more space to enable further groups to meet at the same time. If this project gets enough support, 1st Claygate Scouts can start to reduce their waiting list and make a huge difference to more young people’s lives, which, as the recent survey shows, benefits them well into adult life. To find out more or to support this project, please contact Hugh Gostling, Group Scout Leader, on gsl@ claygatescouts.org You can choose 1st Claygate as your Co-op local cause by going online at www.coop.co.uk/membership

he welcome news that fines and punishments for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving are to be upped to £200 with a six points penalty, still falls well short of a legal hit serious enough to put a stop to the life-threatening stupidity, at least to my mind and many others,. And here I speak from experience, after a narrow…very narrow…escape when a woman, quite clearly steering one-handed and animatedly blabbing on her mobile, recklessly jumped the traffic lights into Esher’s high street in her BMW as I moved, luckily slowly, on green. She missed me by fractions and only because I spotted her at the last minute and braked to a standstill. How I was not walloped was little short of a miracle. And she didn’t even glance in my direction. Mind you, she might well have come off worst - deservedly. At a crunch, her transport would have been no match for mine: she would have been seriously outclassed, bantam versus heavyweight. I was sitting in a veritable tank of a car,

a Land Rover Discovery, an enormously robust, tall and sturdy vehicle designed to cope with estate managers’ bumpy, bouncy and chassis-testing journeys over rough terrain, and yet at the same time to offer an unsurpassed comfort level and feeling of safety. It was upgraded about two years ago and still fits admirably into the bracket of off-roaders quite capable of carrying its seven-seater passenger load in its capacious and comfy inside around town and on the school runs. Driving is a treat, with its loftiness offering all-round visibility and its eight speed automatic gearing silkily smooth. With the vast improvements made by Land Rover to its suspension system over the passing years, and in answer to the pleas of its buyers, the Discovery makes light work of the most demanding and challenging ground. That’s all helped by a clever Terrain Response button which has useful icons to give the driver the option of suitable 4x4 settings. Inside too, all the control switches and clickers, pushers and pullers have high visibility and a

simplicity and ease of use that lessens the burden for whoever is behind the wheel. And just to take your mind off the racket of the school-bound kids packed noisily into the pew-like seats, there is an all-round sound stereo system of superb quality. Kerbside, the Discovery‘s presence is one of height, weight and practicality, with a steadfastness that is a solid advantage when you are looking for a stolid safety for you and yours on the move. Economic? Er….well, maybe not quite the value for money on that front, but helped by an automatic stop-start facility that does offer some fuel-saving to ease the burden on the wallet and purse. Overall, and with its vital surround-view cameras to aid parking, the Discovery fits most of the requirements demanded of an all-rounder when you are looking for capability combined with comfort and top-class safety. That brainless woman, whose nearmiss could easily have been a disaster, is lucky to have escaped bumping into my veritable armoured car…

INOpportunities GARDENS’

Award-winning local garden designer Selina Botham tells us about the early ‘ideas’ part of the design process of SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats)

T

his part of the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) seems appropriate for the Christmas/ New Year edition of Look Local when we’ll all be thinking about opportunities for 2017. This early ‘ideas’ part of the design process is when I start sketching suggestions and developing designs which will meet the brief. There may be opportunities to create secondary seating spaces and develop routes around the garden. Maybe we should move the terrace into a much better position to enjoy the sun at a particular time or get the best of an amazing view. There may also be scope to site a summer house or add a beautiful pergola or water feature. Sometimes, a swimming pool is required, or a children’s play space. Front gardens are often an overlooked opportunity, and creative ideas for front gardens can lift a

house from the ordinary to the beautiful, creating that ‘curb appeal’ that estate agents talk about. Depending on the client’s tastes, the character of the new garden starts being resolved at this early creative stage, deciding if it’s to be smart and minimal or soft and curvy. This is arguably the most creative stage in the design process and is the time for some ‘blue sky’ thinking and also discussion and feedback. It’s a collaborative process and great fun. Sometimes, one idea leads to another, and at the sketch stage, it’s easy to change/develop the ideas or abandon any which don’t work well. Sometimes I can even see improvements to the way the house and garden connect to one another, and when an extension is being planned, the house and garden can be considered together. For one of my clients in Guildford, a cloakroom and study that had the best views of the garden and the stream beyond

28 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2016

were converted into their main living room. It was only because they were saying how much they longed to be able to access the garden better that I was able to think around their problem and find a solution which they really like. In a large estate in Chobham, there was an opportunity to move the driveway to the other side of the house which transformed not only the access to the house (previously all visitors had to enter through the utility room), but also a large area of prime garden space could be reclaimed and developed. Ideas like this are transformative, but even smaller ideas can make a big difference to every-day life. If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas

ANXIETY What is it and how can counselling help?

Many of us experience anxiety at times – we may worry about fitting in with friends, doing well, money and so on. This is entirely normal. It may reach a point, though, when it becomes a problem and negatively affects aspects of life such as school, work and relationships.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems and everybody’s experience of it is individual. Anxiety is our natural reaction to danger - a primal survival mechanism. It causes adrenaline to be released into the bloodstream and produces a myriad of physical changes designed to protect us - the ‘fight or flight’ response. This response worked well when people lived in caves and had to defend themselves against wild animals; and is vital in modern day life-threatening situations. It’s less helpful, however, when starting a new job, sitting an exam, or travelling on public transport, for example. In these situations, there isn’t an actual threat, but it’s perceived as one because of the person’s thoughts and feelings about it.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of anxiety vary hugely, from regularly feeling unsettled, to incessant worrying, to experiencing debilitating panic attacks. The physical effects, such as rapid heart rate, sweating, nausea, muscle aches and pains can be as frightening as the source of anxiety. This can create a vicious circle. Psychological symptoms can include: • Unrelenting worry about past events or ‘worst case scenarios’ • Loss of memory and concentration • Anger and impatience

• Repetitive thoughts • Overwhelming fearfulness As a result, we may avoid particular situations, places and people. This can compromise relationships and employment, lead to risky behaviour and affect school or college attendance and exam success.

How can counselling help?

Increasingly in my work with adolescents and adults, anxiety is the main presenting issue. An important first step in my work as a counsellor is to reassure people that they are not alone. There is plenty of help that can be given and self-help techniques that can be learnt to reduce symptoms and bring about positive changes. In a safe and confidential setting, I can help people learn to: • Recognise their anxiety triggers and why they exist • Explore and challenge thoughts about themselves and the world around them • Develop skills and coping strategies to manage and reduce symptoms • Gradually confront the fears which feed the anxiety Sessions are tailored to suit the individual, their needs and what they would like to achieve from the counselling experience. Hannah is an experienced counsellor & psychotherapist, private practitioner; Counsellor for Heads Together, Positive Autism Support and Training (PAST) and Happy Healthy Me.

Buttons&BOWS

OVER60sCLUB

On Monday 31st October at their normal afternoon meeting, the Buttons & Bow Club held a very successful fundraising charity event in support of `Starlight`.

Starlight grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes for seriously and terminally ill children. Starlight Wishes can cost anything from £100 for a child to meet their favourite celebrity, £500 for a laptop, to thousands of pounds for a chance to swim with dolphins. The average cost of a wish is £3,815, but every donation, big or small, brings a poorly child’s wish closer to being granted & gives the whole family happy memories to share. During the 3 hours, we raised a staggering £700 on our bric-a-brac stall, on Guess the

Weight of the Cake and by selling homemade cakes, as well as providing refreshments and ending with a grand raffle. Donations for this were provided by local businesses such as Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Squires Garden Centre, Garsons, Wheatsheaf Public House, Red Peppers and others. Thank you to all who gave time, help and donations (and to Buttons & Bow members who gave up their afternoon entertainment to assist and ensure the whole event ran smoothly) to make this such a success.

Buttons & Bow Club meets on Mondays in the Sports & Social Club,West End Lane, Esher between 2 & 4.15 pm. You are very welcome to pop in and meet us all. Betty Bowpitt

Chairperson of Button’s & Bow Club.
