ASK BRUCE: WHY DOES MY DOG ROLL IN FOX POO? One of the most frequent questions we get asked here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care is ‘why does my dog love to roll in fox poo?’ And this month, reader and editor Ros Thomas asked just that. The answer is simple and comes from the canine inbred instinct to hunt. To do this successfully, it helps if they disguise their own scent, so rolling in the muck of their prey makes them smell like them and they can creep up undetected. Our modern-day domesticated dogs are very clean. This means they smell of us and our homes, easy for wild animals such as foxes to recognise and run away from. To stop your dog rolling, you must train it to understand this is unwanted behaviour, using a training aid such as discs or voice commands. My own labrador tries to roll in fox poo when we’re out walking, and as soon as she drops her shoulder to roll, I sternly say no and she stops before rolling. You can then issue a doggy treat so their good behaviour is rewarded. This should help break the fox poo game cycle! To get rid of the vile smell of fox poo, there are special shampoos out there, but one of the best solutions I’ve heard on the doggy grapevine is tomato ketchup. Apparently, the vinegar neutralises it! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Windows 10 is soon to be celebrating its 1st birthday: as of April 2016, there have been around 290 million activations, which is pretty impressive. On 29th July 2016, Microsoft will be withdrawing its free upgrade offer, and from here onwards, the upgrade will be charged for. Looking into the future, Microsoft will no longer bring out new editions (ie Windows 11) of the software, simply product enhancements. So, if you wish to keep yourself up to date, take the upgrade now whilst its free. Before doing so, it is worthwhile checking with the publishers of any software you use to ensure it is compatible. The same is applicable for your peripherals. Should you be apprehensive about upgrading, we can do it for you too.
LOW COST
P R I N T I N G We have often talked about the ongoing love/hate relationships we have with inkjet printers, their running costs versus their purchase prices. Yes, it is possible to buy a great wireless printer/copier/ scanner for £50.00, but if you use it extensively, you will find it very costly in the long term, due to the cost and capacity of the inkjet cartridges. As a rule of thumb, we say if you are replacing your cartridges more frequently than once every two months, you have the wrong machine and it will be costing you too much to run. We are pleased to inform you that Epson, the world’s largest inkjet printer manufacturer, has been listening and has a very viable solution for you, called the Ecotank. The Ecotank system is a printer, available in a few models, all with a very large ink cartridge

capacity - in fact, enough ink for 4000 mono pages and 6500 colour pages, with the cost of replacement ink cartridges less than £10... yes, that’s right, £10.00 for 6500 pages. It is a real bargain.

G A R D E N LIGHTING
AWARD-WINNING LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER SELINA BOTHAM
LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF LIGHT IN YOUR GARDEN
The way the light falls in your garden is a factor which will affect the design. As with any aspect of your garden, the key is to assess your garden’s strongest points and design accordingly. Aspect People sometimes feel disappointed with a north-facing garden, but actually, I find this can have advantages in that they benefit from a good amount of east and west sun and there are great opportunities for using shadow to good effect, with the light streaming in from the sides, either in the morning or evening. My own garden faces north west and there’s a beautiful willow tree near the end of the garden on the easterly side, so that it appears to be specially highlighted by the last rays of the west sun. Using the sun’s position As the light changes throughout the day, the pictures within the garden change. The morning light starts weak and low in the east, highlighting shapes of plants and structures, casting long shadows that gradually contract as the sun rises. Midday brightness reveals the fullness of the colours and
14 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016
gives intensity to the garden. Often, the best light is in the late afternoon, and colours deepen and warm as the sun sets. Shadows lengthen again as the sun drops, giving a new and different look. Design tips - place sculpture or plants so that the shadows can be appreciated: for example, a pergola can be positioned to provide an interesting rhythm of shadows cast across the terrace. Tall grasses can be positioned so that they are enlivened by the warm light of a sunset behind them. A tree with a beautiful outline can be positioned so the sun rises behind it, highlighting the
darkness of the outline against the sky. Light is such an important free resource, one we can use to great effect in the garden. Selina Botham is an awardwinning garden designer, based in Claygate. BREATHING SPACE
A s separate kitchen and dining spaces become a thing of the past, take inspiration from the Gadsby family who, with the help of L&E, have take a tired, dark kitchen and conservatory and transformed it into a spacious room, flooded with natural light. It’s taken Siobain Gadsby many years to get the kitchen of her dreams but sometimes things are worth the wait. “We have lived here for 18 years. It’s taken a bit of persuading my husband to go ahead with our kitchen extension but we are both thrilled with the end result. The kitchen that we had was very old with no view onto the garden and a lean to conservatory which let out a lot of heat. What we wanted was more of a family room, with more space, more light and to be able to see the garden,” Siobain recalls. WHY L&E “We bought the house with no intention of staying here for so long but we love the area so extending to make the most out of our living area downstairs was the best way forward.” The couple had quite definite ideas on how to change the style of the kitchen, but needed a building company to help them realise their vision. “We had seen L&E’s advert in a local magazine and had also had a recommendation through a friend at work. After meeting L&E, they suggested we see some of the work carried out in nearby
Kingston. That clenched it as we spoke to the owner who couldn’t fault the building team in any way, shape or form,” Siobain remembers. “They were competitively priced too which was a key factor for us.” THE PROJECT With a completion deadline of 11 weeks, L&E began the build. “I liked their efficiency and there was thought throughout their processes. Nothing was a problem for them and as we went through the building work, the team would come up with suggestions on how to improve things,” Siobain remembers. “They were always one step ahead and were fantastic at resolving any issues and giving advice on anything from window size to choosing sockets. The team really cared about their work and that does speak volumes. The project was completed two weeks early which was phenomenal considering those subzero temperatures in February.” Siobain says that the key to the success of the building project was their ongoing communication with time put aside to keep up to date with progress. “As the project evolves, there are always
tweaks. We really benefitted from that flow of information and though we haven’t had any problems, I feel that if I call, they’ll come back at any stage.” NIGELLA’S KITCHEN The end result is a room that’s bathed in sunlight and one where the indoor and outdoor spaces are seamlessly linked as one. It’s had some unexpected benefits too, as the couple’s two girls have really taken to cooking. “They love it and often whip up pancakes for friends. Meghan, says she feels like Nigella wandering round this kitchen!” “I would thoroughly recommend L&E. When they started, I just didn’t anticipate it would be finished so quickly. It’s been brilliant for us and the kids. The team said ‘We treat your home like our home’ and they really meant it. I didn’t want them to go and wouldn’t say that if I didn’t mean it. We were really lucky.” Mr and Mrs Gadsby are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

THE STORY OF PAINSHILL 35 YEARS TO CREATE AND 35 YEARS TO RESTORE
This year, Painshill Park Trust celebrates its 35th anniversary and the magnificent transformation of one of Surrey’s most important 18th century landscape gardens. Everything you see today at Painshill has been completely restored. Painshill is a magnificent 18th century landscape garden in Cobham which was created in the naturalistic style from 1738-1773 by the Hon. Charles Hamilton. Hamilton was educated at Westminster and Oxford, and like most gentlemen of this period, he went on several Grand Tours of Europe. He arrived at Painshill, fresh from 2 years spent in Rome, with a vision for a new type of garden with extraordinary views and fewer formal planting schemes. Over a 35 year period, Hamilton designed gardens at Painshill that were among the earliest to reflect a trend away from geometric formality to a wilder, naturalistic style. He did so by planting well-established and newlyintroduced and rare species, many from North America, and combined classical follies as emblems in a picturesque landscape. Hamilton changed the face of the English landscape forever. Sadly, due to lack of funds, he sold up and left Painshill in 1773. Over time, and several
owners later, Painshill gradually slipped into decay and became derelict. THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN Hamilton’s creation may never have been rediscovered if not for a small group of local residents who formed The Friends of Painshill. This group, along with the Garden History Society, began their campaign to rescue the garden. By the mid-70s, the tragic story of the derelict 18th century landscape garden began to attract national attention, and in 1981, the Painshill Park Trust was set up to restore this forgotten garden to its former glory. PAINSHILL TODAY Thanks to a lot of hard work from a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and generous donors, Painshill is now well on the way to full restoration. Most of the follies in the Grade I listed landscape have been rebuilt or restored, including the award-winning crystal grotto, which is once again a sparkling centrepiece. The landscape has been cleared and replanted with thousands of new trees and shrubs. Only plants which would have been available to Hamilton during his time at Painshill have been used to bring the past alive for a new audience.

It was great to meet up recently with my old pal, Leslie Charles, the Grammy award-winner with worldwide sales of over 30 million, best known to the world as Billy Ocean. Back in the day when we were both ‘Kids’, we were based in Radio Luxembourg’s London office in Mayfair, which served as our home-from-home when not in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. I would be upstairs, pre-recording interviews etc. while Billy was situated in the basement with his piano, upon which he wrote songs for other people. He became the ‘house’ songwriter on behalf of Radio Luxembourg’s publishing division. We kept in touch through the years and it was wonderful to see him looking so happy and healthy, and, after all these years, enjoying the fruits of his past songwriting talents which eventually paid big dividends for him, with massive global hits such as ‘When The Going Gets Tough’, ‘Caribbean Queen’, ‘Red Light Spells Danger’ ‘Get Outta My Dreams’ and ‘Love Really Hurts Without You’. His new record company has just issued a double disc set, entitled ‘Here You Are + The Best of ’, which features one CD with all his past chart triumphs and the other disc with his cover versions of the brilliant music that inspired him, from artists such as Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley and many more. He said “It just seemed to fit perfectly... the songs that made me into the singer I became and where these songs took me to. Hence, Here You Are.” He’s also currently on a big successful UK tour, where he is having a lot of fun. Touring is important to Billy, as it’s not just about promoting his new release, but also provides him with a chance to employ an entourage who owe their livelihood to him. As Billy told me, ‘it’s a big responsibility when taking people on, and I do my best for them, as they are part of my team and rely on me”. Billy is one of the nicest people in pop and it’s lovely when good things happen to good people. His new collection of songs is available to order on Amazon and iTunes.

group of teenagers from Weston Green, Thames Ditton and Hinchley Wood have spent the last few months immersed in the world of film and photography, thanks to a community initiative developed by All Saints Weston. The Weston Youth Arts Project, which has been running since January this year, provides twice-monthly sessions with visiting professionals on photography and video skills. Participants have explored how to frame their shots, lighting, composition and other technical skills, as well as the mechanics of shooting video, creating a storyboard and how to work on a video shoot. The group has been privileged to have some fantastic people coming down to work with them – Nick Handel (ex BBC producer), Jon Ross (technical manager at GLive in Guildford), Paul Bamford (Top Gear cameraman), Laurence Catford (freelance film editor) and Becs Gregg (freelance photographer). Over the last few months, as they have been building their skills, they have also been planning their video and photography shoots. The team will create a short film, made up of interviews and documentary-style footage, celebrating life in Elmbridge from our young

peoples’ perspective. These films will be shown in a gala screening on Tuesday 28th June at 7.30pm at All Saints Weston which will also launch the exhibition. The Revd Phillip Johnson, Vicar of All Saints Weston, said: “This project has allowed us to provide a once-in-alifetime opportunity for these young people. The range of working professionals who have contributed to the project is truly staggering and I don’t think that the students can believe their luck!” One of the participants, Sam Cruthers (13) said: “I’ve really enjoyed this project. Working and meeting these people has been great, and the skills I’ve learnt have definitely made me think about a career in film-making.” The project has been supported by Elmbridge Borough Council, the Rank Foundation, Peter Hickman, the Rowan Bentall Trust and the Bishop of Guildford’s Foundation. Tickets for the Gala Screening are available from www.allsaintsweston.com or on Eventbrite. The exhibition will run from Wednesday 29th June to Sunday 24th July and is free to members of the public. All Saints Weston has a thriving Youth Group that meets on Sunday evenings - all young people (Year 7 and above) are welcome to join. So come and see thousands of wonderful exhibits in the huge marquee, pet a pony (or even a tarantula!), cheer on the Claygate Tug of War (or a ferret racing), admire the classic cars, try out mini rugby, dance with Morris Men, enter the Fancy Dress Parade, play hook a duck, run a race and buy an icecream (or some homemade fudge!). And why not have a go at entering an exhibit? Anyone can enter, and for most classes, you don’t have to live in Claygate. There really is a class for everyone - for more information, visit claygateflowershow.co.uk

Not only that, but with your support, the Claygate Flower & Village Show boosts local good causes with any surplus funds. This year, it’s helping with much needed improvements to the Claygate Recreation Ground. Dominic Raab, MP for Esher and Walton, who enjoyed the Show last year with his wife and young children, said: “Every year, the Claygate Flower & Village Show just gets better and better. It’s a testament to a fantastic team which puts its heart and soul into making it a fabulous community occasion.” Tickets are available from Johnstons Newsagent in Claygate (£4 per adult / £2 per child) or on the gate (£5 per adult / £2 per child). Children under five go FREE. For photos or more information, please contact: Miriam Schafer, Claygate Flower & Village Show Press Officer, 07899 694310, miris@hotmail.co.uk

M U S T A N G CAR REVIEW
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW SIXTH GENERATION MUSTANG
A
decade or three ago maybe four - soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton, to this day still one of my best friends, was gifted a sponsored Ford Mustang. Jaguar E-type owner me then, a racer in my wildest dreams, revelled in the speed Bobby hated, except when he was bursting clear of the midfield to score for Manchester United or England. So occasionally, he preferred to let me drive the American flyer, especially on the narrow and treacherously twisty roads from Manchester to his holiday home in Anglesey, off North Wales. That is still a joy of a memory, now revitalised by Ford’s revelation of their sixth-generation pony-badged Mustang, a real beauty. We motor reviewers were treated to its debut at the New York Motor Show with their gimmick of ultra-gimmicks, a replay of their publicity stunt of 1964, when a Mustang was unveiled on Floor 86 of the Empire State Building. I must say, staged as an eye-catcher of quality, the high-level launch was a needless attention-grabber to what
28 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016
I firmly forecast will be a winner on its own merits and looks. And I shall be very, very surprised if the orders are not quickly placed with the nearest Ford dealer as an outcome of genuine appreciation and promise that this stunner will be the best Ford has ever produced. In fact, it comes in two forms, both equally desirable: as a convertible with a fabric hood that folds away in seven seconds, and as a fastback to rival any challenger currently on the market, price and performance-wise. Over the past half-century, the Mustang has topped the six millions sales figure. Okay, iconic as it may be, it has not always hit the high spots of satisfaction, but this bigger, but lighter, brasher belter, fast and fun, looks to me like a surefire success, though it still, as ever, fails to hit the highest spots cabin-wise, and its suspension is floatier than we Brits are used to. But the brakes are real confidenceboosting grippers. The interior is unmistakably Stars and Stripes...hard plastic everywhere and bum-numbing seats. But the engine sound feedback
has the throaty gruffness of growling movie star Lee Marvin. Just to explode a widely-held myth that it is a car specifically targeting American wallets, Ford is making a breakthrough to grab a wider market with a right-hand drive version. Already, since its release in the UK a few months back, it has reaped nearly 4,000 orders. And the waiting list is swelling. If Trophy Wife would let me - but I have already been downed with a stern NO! - I’d give serious thought to swopping our Porsche Cayman for this iconic bargain buy, Ford’s new kid on the cylnder block, especially the topof-the-range Coyote. I wonder if Sir Bobby will be offered the latest model. If so, I’m on standby to resume my chauffering talents. Specification: Three engines 2.3, 3.7 V6 and 5-0 V8 all with eco-boost. Gears six-speed manual with paddle shifters or automatic. Performance V8 GT: top speed around 155mph. 0-62 in 4.8 secs. Fuel: 20.9 mpg. Price £34,995.

ddie Jones, the current England head coach, surprised everyone by attending the Esher v Blackheath National One League game at Esher Rugby Club on Saturday 23rd April. He spoke to many of the kids, watched the U12s (both Esher and Oakmedians) play and inspired our visiting ball boys from Whitstable. Eddie surprised the First XV players from both Esher and Blackheath with pre-match pep-talks and spoke passionately about the National One community culture in an impromptu Q&A with club chairman John Inverdale at the pre-match lunch. He also showed his relaxed and friendly nature by participating in ‘selfies’ with excited members and speaking to key sponsors Eteach and GCL. Youth Rugby is hugely important to Eddie Jones; as England rugby fans know, he selected a number of younger players to be in the squad which saw England
win earlier this year. Eddie was delighted to hear about Esher’s new Community Programme. Coach Ant Braithwaite will be visiting local schools, offering vital rugby training, drills and skills to boys and girls of all ages (years 3 – 11). The community programme will in turn expand Esher’s vast Minis and Juniors division with strong new pathways into the Sevens, Amateurs and First XV as they develop. As Eddie Jones left Esher on Saturday, he said he was pleased to be able to meet the youngsters and to put something back into a local rugby club, as it reminded him of his own community club in his native Australia. To invite Esher’s Community Coach into your school, please email email ant@esherrugby.co.uk. minis@esherrugby.co.uk Esher Rugby Club, 369 Molesey Road, Walton on Thames, Surrey, KT12 3PF
