From the EDITOR

Welcome to our May magazine! I hope you all enjoyed a lovely Easter break, although that seems like a while ago now, but at least we have two more Bank Holidays to look forward to this month. Let’s hope they are warm and sunny. As always, a busy, busy issue for you this month… we include a review of the Claygate Music Festival, what a fabulous event this was! Also, a competition to win tickets to the Hampton Court Flower Show. This year’s show promises gorgeous gardens & theatrical displays, with heroes of horticulture thrown in for good measure, and an initiative to celebrate renowned and amazing people in horticulture. Discover the evolution of plants and the annual Festival of Roses too. This is a really lovely day out, so why not give it a go? You know what they say... ‘you’ve got to be in it to win it’ ! Coincidentally, we include a little feature about a very talented sculptor who will be exhibiting his work at the show this year. Stunning work, which I hope to see myself. It’s a sure sign that summer is on the way when we receive news of a multitude of local fairs and fêtes. We include a whole selection for you to consider. The sense of community is great locally and these events typify what living here is all about. Friendly family fun. Enjoy. Finally, I’d like to welcome Esher Library to our pages; they will be providing a regular notice for us which I’m sure will be appreciated by many. Wishing you all a great month. Until next time, Kind regards,

Ros

The little Surrey village of Claygate acted rather big for its boots in March by successfully staging its 8th Claygate Music Festival, offering over 22 musical and entertaining gigs over 2 weeks from 2nd - 18th March 2018. Largely due to Clive Knapp, gig organiser, and the successes of the previous music festivals, the Claygate Village Association (CVA) was able to attract some rather big names in the music business to entertain us this year, including headliners Mica Paris, Caravan, Jesus Jones, 60s/70s Dance Night with The Cover Girls and Mick Brown, Radio Jackie DJ, alongside the many talented local groups and school concerts. Caroline Cartwright, Chair CVA says “Thanks and credit must go to the many fantastic local volunteers who all gave their time and professional skills to present a Claygate Music Festival that any music promoter would be proud to claim as their own! Also, many thanks to all the local businesses in Claygate and beyond who supported the festival with advertising and promotion.” Tickets Talk - even the March #minibeastfromtheeast didn’t put off the festival goers’ determination to join us and have some fun! Over 1,600 tickets were sold locally and online and everyone turned up! Publicity Consultant, Denise Tenn says:- “As always, the loyal Claygate locals well supported the festival and our publicity reached much further afield this year. For the first time, we had a sponsor - Knight Frank, Esher - who helped us spread the word locally, and our survey says we also had visitors from all over Surrey, the Home Counties, London and even from as far as France, Finland, Argentina and

the USA! This year, the power of social media definitely made Claygate global as well as local.” Twitter tuned in and turned up to @ClaygateMusic and Facebook brought us many more friends! Feedback was so motivating “...A great night! Thank you to everyone that worked so hard to produce 2 weeks of musical performances for every age group and genre :)” Another “What brilliant gigs! Rounding off a great @ ClaygateMusicFestival 2018 #ClaygateMusicFestival” and “@ClaygateMusicFestival and what an amazing job they’ve done this year.” Even the bands enjoyed Claygate’s warm welcome. Fun was obviously hard work too, as thirsty throats enjoyed over 2,000 drinks supplied by Claygate local companies Excellar and Premier Wines and over 800 pints from our very own local micro brewery Brightwater, all served by local volunteers. Gigs and giggles - along with all the hard work by all involved, there were certainly some great laughs along the way. Susanne Tunnicliffe introduced the bands to the stage and reports “The bands were completely laid back, telling funny stories of past gigs. All the bands and performers were easy to work with, were fun, witty and professional. The funniest moment was with the ‘Queen’ tribute band ‘Bohemians’, when I walked in to the dressing-room and ‘Brian May’ was spraying ‘Freddie Mercury’s’ hair black, while ‘Freddie’ was sticking on his moustache, and ‘John Deacon’ had his feet up, swigging a bottle of beer. Hilarious! That’s rock and roll for you.” If you missed out this year, look out for news of the next Claygate Music events on Twitter on @ClaygateMusic, as Claygate hopes to see you all next time!

REASONABLE FORCE C.T. SULLIVAN

Last month, a story hit the national headlines, regarding the right to defend oneself and one’s home, should an armed burglar break in. On this particular occasion, the home belonged to two pensioners who were asleep in their bed. What followed led to a pretty horrific outcome and must have been terrifying for the elderly couple. It resulted in the arrest of the home owner/ elderly male pensioner who was held by the police on suspicion of murder. Obviously, this is a very controversial area of law and there are very differing views on how the homeowner should be regarded

in law, given this situation. I believe on this occasion, the homeowner has been told by police that he will not be charged with any offence. Now, I do not profess to have the answers but these headlines brought to mind a very good novel I read a little while ago about just such a situation: ‘Reasonable Force’, written by local author, C T Sullivan. It’s a very good read and, given the recent incident, I thought some of you might find it interesting to see how the plot unfolds. It’s certainly a thought-provoking read! ‘Reasonable Force’ is available from Amazon for £10.99 - boasting a five star rating on the site *****

...coming soon GDPR - GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION

sales@tecres.co.uk

www.tecres.co.uk

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. On 25th May 2018, every business in the UK (and Europe) will have to comply with the new GDPR legislation. That is every business, there is no hiding place. Not knowing is not an excuse. If you as a business hold personal information about another person, you must comply with GDRP, failure to do so could result in a fine of up to 3% of global turnover or up to 20 million Euros. GDPR legislation replaced our aged Data Protection Act of 1998 and 1995, so this really brings us up to date and offers protection for the future. It is easy to think GDPR doesn’t affect you because you are a window cleaner or a taxi driver, but this may not be the case. In short, if you keep any data which could identify a person, you will need to comply to GDPR. This could be a payroll record or an enquiring potential customer. If you use a mailing list of prospects or customers, in order to comply with GDPR, you have to seek positive confirmation from the person whose information you hold, stating that they have granted you permission to have their email address for the intended use, such as the sending of product updates. You are expected to protect the data people have provided you with. If your computer uses an out-ofdate operating system which no longer has any security updates available, such as Windows XP which retired in 2014, you are in breach of GDPR, since you will have failed to take reasonable care of the data. Or if you do not have any regularly updated internet security, you

14 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

are in breach, since you will not have taken sufficient care of users’ data. If you are aware that your company has fallen victim to a data breach, you must inform the owners of the data within 72 hours of the breach. As a consumer, you have the right to ask any Europeanbased company holding your data to reveal what information they hold about you, and they must respond to this request within a month. Also, you can request to have your data amended or deleted, and they must comply within a month. This is far from a complete breakdown of what GDPR means, but if you have any presence in the digital world, this is something you need to know more about. To help, we have detailed below the dates of when some popular operation systems are due to stop support:

SUNDAY TWENTIETH

MAY ‘18

The 63rd Esher May Fair will be held on Esher Green, opened by the Mayor of Elmbridge at noon on Sunday 20th May 2018. This popular local community event, which takes place annually, is a major fundraising activity for the organisers, 4th Thames Ditton ‘Ajax’ Sea Scouts. They are not the only group to benefit though: charities and organisations such as the RNLI, RSPB and East Elmbridge Foodbank have stalls on the day and raise money for their own good causes. An action-packed, fun afternoon out for all the family. The fair has traditional fairground rides, stalls selling arts and crafts, charity items and local products. The ever-popular auction will have items for children and adults. An exciting programme of arena events runs from 11.45am until 4pm and includes the 3rd Molesey Scout & Guide Band, Kuk Sool Won Martial Arts, PAPA – the Performing Arts Parents Association from Esher High School, Chadsworth Stage School and a Canine Gymkhana. The main sponsor this year is local estate agent, Savills Esher, and Hawk on the Wild Side will be making their first appearance at the Fair, providing a flying display by birds of prey and an area where professional falconers will be available to answer questions about the birds. To sustain the family and to provide the opportunity to sit down and relax, a wide variety of refreshments will be on offer, including the famous Ajax Sea Scouts tea tent, the ever-popular Ajax barbecue, and for those in need of something stronger, a beer and prosecco tent, sponsored by Wellden Turnbull. Free parking is available at Sandown Park. We are hoping for excellent weather and a great turnout.

Green Roofs & Walls DESIGNS FOR

ALL SEASONS

Selina Botham - 07894 553 202 or visit us online at www.designsforallseasons.co.uk

We’re always looking at ways of maximising green space and also like to keep up to date with garden design ideas and fashions. So, over the last few years, we’ve been looking at green roofs and walls and assessing their usefulness. Having attended training courses on green walls, I then visited some in situ. They look fabulous when first planted and if the maintenance and watering is well kept up. However, it’s not easy to do and the maintenance input is huge for the benefits created. In an urban setting where there is less scope for green space, I can see they have a place, but for most of my clients around Surrey, I can see there are better ways of achieving a green vertical surface. I’ve used the planting techniques

20 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

and same tough plants to create green banks in a couple of gardens. However, if you need a green vertical surface, growing climbers either on pergolas or up buildings or fences is the easiest and most sustainable way to go upwards. The climbers are rooted in a level plane and are therefore much easier to water. They just needing training and cutting back periodically. On buildings, take care with the choice of climbers and never use ivy on a house wall unless you want to ruin your brickwork or hide something very ugly. If you have tile hung buildings, avoid ivy and also twining vigorous climber such as wisteria unless you will be really attentive to maintenance, as the tendrils quickly grow under tiles and around pipes and gutters. I speak from personal

experience on our own house. I don’t regret our wisteria, as it is so stunning, but it is a lot of work. However, green roofs are very different to green walls and relatively easy to achieve and maintain. All our trials of green roofs are so far very positive. I’m enjoying the one we put on our house extension and several of my clients have green roofs on sheds and garden buildings. A structural engineer is needed to ensure that the substructure is strong enough to support the weight of the roof and the water it may absorb. You also need an irrigation system, and of course, weeds must be kept at bay. I am told that the lifespan of my flat roof will be extended by the green roof which will protect the roofing material from UV rays. Aesthetically and practically, it has been a great success for the past two years. The sedums have great autumn colour and pretty flowers in summer which bees and moths and butterflies enjoy. We have found that, by using well-established sedum green roof matting on sheds and garden retreats, weeds find it hard to find space to grow and the effect of the sedum roof is both beautiful through all seasons and also great for the environment. You can also create an ‘herb roof ’ on top of a shed, and

providing just 200 mm of topsoil is enough to grow herbs such as prostrate rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, chives and annual herbs too. You’ll need to be able to reach them for easy picking, so this only works where there is a suitable level change or if you have a low storage shed. We’ve also created an ‘intensive green roof ’ for a client in Highbury, as she wanted to use her roof as a garden. The whole roof was designed to be a garden and she simply jumps out of her sitting room window to garden it! What would have been redundant roof space becomes a green part of her home and also part of the photosynthesis cycle whereby CO2 is taken out of the environment and oxygen is replaced. Plants are brilliant for the environment, and by creating a green roof, there is another way we can do our bit for the planet. If you would like to redesign your garden or have a ‘roof garden’ and need some professional help, contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk or our Facebook page Selina Botham – Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons or follow us on Instagram @ designsforallseasons

EARTH, AIR

FIRE & WIND SCULPTOR PAUL RICHARDSON

Sculptor Paul Richardson originally studied graphics near his home in Essex and went on to take a degree in painting in Birmingham. It was after college though that Paul discovered metal. He took a studio in the disused Birds Custard factory where he found steel sheets, bought a little welder and started to build. A passion for steel has characterised his sculptures ever since. Paul has created a significant body of public art for which he was nominated Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Commerce and Industry. Commissions are always site-specific and Paul won a commission for the centre of Waterford, home of Hasbro’s Monopoly factory, to construct a huge corner of a Monopoly board, complete with rolling dice and a five metre long battleship. The natural world has become an important influence, culminating in recent works for the landscape and the garden. They draw on the exquisite patterns of nature, the balance of symmetry and asymmetry, chaos and order. Like many of his sculptures, ‘Flora’ holds contradictions. It seems to capture a fleeting moment between beauty and decay, yet is built of solid steel. On the other hand, just as ‘falling leaves return to the root’, the steel itself,

left untreated, would rust and return to the earth. To hold back decay, the sculptures are protected from air and water with a layer of zinc. Unlike steel, once the zinc is exposed to air and moisture outdoors, only the outer layer is given up and it forms a delicate, chalky grey patina. Examples of Paul’s work can be seen locally, a horse opposite Sandown Racecourse, and Flora at the Hannah Peschar Garden in Ockley, rather beautifully suspended from one of their lovely old trees. Throughout this series for the landscape and garden, Paul has found himself returning to the four elements. Pieces like Flora and the Leaf Sphere with their open floating look have a natural connection with air. Another in the series, ‘Fallen Leaf ’, relates to the earth, a leaf skeleton, edges exquisitely frayed, returning to the soil. His most recent piece, a fire basket, is a latticework cradle of vegetal shapes. Once alight, these shapes come to life as silhouettes against flames inside. So it is perhaps no surprise that Paul is currently developing a water feature, working with the play of light on water trickling over stainless steel leaves which will be seen for the first time ever at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 3rd July – 8th July 2018

AUDI A8

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

A blessing of my job is the frequency of invitations for enjoyable luxury lifestyle outings and exclusive insights into experiences otherwise out of reach, reserved only as hopes and dreams beyond reality, or as the right of the privileged ranks of the rich and famous. And here I cite with the fondest of memories my good fortune to have flown in Concorde from Paris to New York; a sailing to the USA aboard the Queen Mary 2, with a night spent at the captain’s table and a glittering host of celebs; a Virgin flight first-class to Australia with a Hong Kong five-star stopover; countless private jet trips with the late pools millionaire Robert Sangster and one-to-one lunches with mega film stars Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and world F1 champ Nigel Mansell; holidays with football legends George Best and Bobby Charlton, and an extended tour with The Beatles. There are too many more to mention. I shall stop it there to take up the very latest treat, an outing in what has been rightly voted the world’s luxury car, the wow of an Audi A8, a limo of poshness personified. And deservedly so, if my comfort-zone transport to the ultra-sophisticated Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, majestic centrepiece of quaint Bellagio on the shoreline of stunning Lake Como, one of Italy’s real treasures, is anything to go by. This is the ninth time in 14 years that Audi has been honoured with a World Car prize, and honestly, having

28 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

savoured its style, revelled in its sumptuous legroom, sprawled in its leatherwork and appreciated its driver aids with gadgets galore, I am in 100 per cent support of its latest voted status on the globe’s luxury class list over some very worthy rivals at the New York Auto Show in March. Audi justifiably hail the A8 as their flagship saloon, as soothing an example as is possible of what a luxury model should be, and with so many driver assistance aids - 40 plus - and inbuilt safety devices and easy-to-read driver-help dials info so painstakingly assembled. And I viewed it all from the cossetted comfort of the vast back seat spread of exclusive club lounge comfort and quality, as my chauffeur made the most of the 4.0-litre engine that offered easy work on the 50-odd mile journey from Milan’s Linate Airport to the Serbelloni Hotel at the other end of a free-flowing motorway and then a twisty finale along the lakeside’s narrow lanes. It is a glider of a clever car with aplomb, grace, style and value for money, and it gave me and Trophy Wife an arrival presence at the Serbelloni that was noticed and commented upon favourably by an American couple as they strolled off to their Rolls Royce.... Specification: Audi V8. 3.0TFSI 335bhp Quattro. Fuel : Petrol. Speed 155mph. 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. MPG 37.7. Warranty: three years/60,000 miles. Price £71,000

MAYOR’S MUSICAL

FUNDRAISER

Around 200 local singers and musicians joined forces last Friday to help raise in excess of £3600 for the Mayor of Elmbridge’s chosen charity, Cobham-based Oasis Children’s Charity. Weybridge Male Voice Choir, Elmbridge Choir and the 1st Claygate Scout and Guide Band performed to a full and appreciative audience at ACS Cobham International School at a concert organised by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Rachael Lake. ‘It was a fantastic evening – fun and entertaining and we all enjoyed every moment,’ says Rachael. ‘Both choirs and the band performed brilliantly, complementing each other in their own unique style. I am delighted that we raised such an amazing amount for my charity and I would like to thank ACS Cobham for hosting the event, as well as the organisers and performers for

giving up their time to support me.’ Elmbridge Choir’s Musical Director, Cliff van Tonder, was delighted with how the evening went.‘My choir felt very honoured to have been asked to participate and it was a privilege to perform, not only in front of our own Mayor, but also mayoral parties from the surrounding boroughs. The highlight of the evening for me, and probably the audience too, was when Weybridge Male Voice Choir joined Elmbridge Choir on stage for a rousing finale of ‘Anthem’ from Chess, conducted by Johnny Kilhams, Musical Director of Weybridge Male Voice Choir. It sounded absolutely awesome!’ The final fundraising event of the Mayoral year will be a Quiz Night in aid of Oasis which will be held on Saturday 27th April at the Elmbridge Sports Hub inWalton-on-Thames.
