From the Editor

Hello & welcome to Look Local in November! I’m in the process of embracing the winter! Not always easy, but it has to be done. Walking twice a day with my four-legged furry companion certainly helps to lift the spirits and I highly recommend a daily stroll if you can fit it in. We enjoyed a lovely time at The Elmbridge Food Festival recently and hope you did too, if you went along. We share some images from the event.

GORGEOUS GROOMING Autumn is here, and as the season changes, so does your dog’s coat. As they shed their summer coat and grow a new layer for winter, so the grooming challenges begin. Owners with long-haired double-coated dogs, such as labradors, golden retrievers and huskies, will know about this more than anyone! Whilst moulting is Nature’s way of regulating your dog’s temperature, a little helping hand is most definitely needed when they live in your home, as opposed to outside in the wild, At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we have installed a brand new purpose-built dog grooming parlour recently and have recruited a highly-experienced head groomer. Here are her top five tips for keeping your dog looking gorgeous: 1. Invest in good grooming tools, such as a slicker brush, rake and comb. 2. Brush your dog regularly to ensure all unwanted dead hair is removed. Better in the brush than on your sofa. 3. Get into the habit of washing and drying dirty doggy paws after muddy walks. 4. Keep up-to-date with your flea treatment. 5. Book professional groomer appointments every 8-10 weeks for that extra special touch. NEW VICTORIA HOSPTIAL PHYSIOTHERAPY TEAM

W

ith the ski season quickly approaching, it’s critical to address pre-season conditioning to help prevent injuries. We asked The New Victoria Hospital’s physiotherapy team of experts to put together an effective but easy to maintain plan to help. According to The New Victoria Hospital’s senior physiotherapist, Tom Stukins, a conditioning programme must start at least 6 weeks prior to the ski trip to ensure injury is avoided, and should embrace the following areas: Aerobic Exercise This is important, as it increases the efficiency of the heart to deliver oxygen throughout the body. It can be achieved by jogging, swimming, cycling or any other activity that raises the heart rate. All aerobic fitness must be increased gradually, both in intensity and length of time spent exercising. Aerobic fitness can also be improved in small adjustments to your lifestyle, such as getting off the bus a stop early and walking the last 15 minutes, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walking instead of driving to the local shops. Muscular Endurance These muscular endurance exercises are particularly good for skiing: a) Lean against a wall with your knees bent 70-80 degrees. Sustain this position for 15 seconds, and gradually increase to a few minutes. b) Run up and down 1 or 2 steps, gradually increasing speed and repetitions from 1 to 5 minutes. c) Bend knees to about 30 degrees. Jump side to side about 1 foot. Start with about 10 reps and increase to a few minutes. d) Use a TheraBand or length of elastic material attached

12 Looklocal Magazine - November 2015

to a door handle. Stand with your legs astride, holding either end of the band. Perform a poling action back and forth with alternate arms. Begin with 10 reps increasing to a few minutes. Ideally, these exercises should be added to a general conditioning programme. Warm Up and Stretches Once you have conditioned your body in preparation for your ski trip, there are still things you can do to further reduce the risk of injury. Firstly, make sure you get any injuries treated before you go: for example, a niggling lower back that’s not rotating correctly can lead to increased rotational forces through the knees, putting the knee at risk and vice versa. Secondly, once at your ski resort, ensure that you warm up and stretch before and after skiing. According to Tom, following these simple steps can really help you to get your body safe to ski. Just work at what you can fit into the time your lifestyle allows. Here’s to an enjoyable and injury-free ski season! Physio appointments: Tel: 020 8949 9040; Email: physio@newvictoria.co.uk The New Victoria Physiotherapy Department employs highly-experienced senior physiotherapists who are full members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Health and Care Professions Council. The Chittilappilly family loved the location of their Kingston townhouse but the space wasn’t working for them so they appointed L&E to create a single-storey extension and garage conversion, giving them a spacious kitchen/family room and an extra reception room. Jose, Delfy, Anton and George are delighted with their new space that means they can be together whilst doing different things. Delfy explains, “I do Indian cooking four or five times a week and there wasn’t enough room for me to be cooking and the kids to be with me, so I was stuck on my own in the kitchen while everyone else was upstairs.” The Chittilappillys had a clear vision of what they wanted to create and had seen magazine features on L&E. They got

14 Looklocal Magazine - November 2015

quotes from various different builders but it was the L&E approach that stood out. “The surveyor was very different to other builders we’d seen. He sat down with us to discuss in detail what we wanted and asked us lots of questions. “The whole build process was less stressful for me because I completely trusted the foreman. I had confidence in him that he never cut corners. They made improvements to our plans and were very receptive to our vision. They always approached us with solutions rather than problems,” remembers Jose. “It’s made a big, big difference to our lives. The children have more playdates so they’re happy and we often have friends to stay so the entertaining space is wonderful,” smiles Delfy. This happy family have already recommended L&E to other friends.

TREES AWARD-WINNING LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER SELINA BOTHAM TELLS US ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TREES FOR THE LANDSCAPE.

Trees are such an important part of the landscape. They live the longest & are the biggest green element in the landscape. In terms of the environment, they make a huge impact, both for the wildlife they support & the benefits they have for air quality, urban cooling & using water. There is also an intrinsic personal value that we put on trees as they become familiar in the landscape, & although I don’t really consider myself a ‘tree hugger’, I do enjoy a magnificent tree! Undoubtably, without trees, we’d be looking at a very sad planet. Trees are a big responsibility too, and if you own a large tree, you know how important it is to maintain it and keep an eye on its physical health. People tend to value a large tree if it’s in someone else’s garden but want to remove it if it’s in their garden. The council tree officers help to protect notable trees in the landscape and some residents’ associations have safeguards in place to ensure that trees are protected. However, as with all living things, there is a cycle of life, and trees don’t live for ever, so succession planting is also important. It is also worth considering trees as part of the wider landscape. This means that every tree decision needs to consider their value as a specimen (health, size, shape, environmental contribution) but also take into consideration whether they are creating an overall positive impact or if they might be preventing something even better in the future. Perhaps a tree is badly placed for a view or prevents access

to an area, or there is just a much better use for a particular space. Perhaps the tree is a variety which we know is under threat or may be sick - sometimes then it can be a case of “out with the old” and “in with the new”. This is never a decision to be taken lightly, so do get advice from an arboriculturalist or garden designer and always check that the tree is not subject to a tree protection order. (The tree officer at Elmbridge BC will be able to tell you if you have any doubt). Likewise, if you live in a conservation area, you will need permission from the council, and some private roads also have safeguards in place to preserve the environment and trees in particular. If you are choosing a new tree, consider its ultimate size and shape and go as big as you can (the larger the better for the environment). There are often other considerations, such as proximity to buildings and neighbours’ gardens (it’s nice to share the choice of a tree with your

neighbour, as there’s nothing worse than a tree which ends up chopped on one side because the neighbours hate your selection). Next, it’s a case of considering the space you have and your soil type, and to make sure that what you choose will thrive in your garden. Then select the tree for its wildlife value, if that’s important to you, or the fruits or the flowers and colours through the seasons. There is a vast choice, but help is available from the RHS or Barchams websites. I find the staff at Chessington Plant Centre are very knowledgeable, or a garden designer will have plenty of ideas for you to consider and will design a tree into the overall landscape of your garden. Selina Botham is an award-winning garden designer, based in Claygate. If you would like to improve & make the best of your garden & need some professional help, contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her website www.designsforallseasons.co.uk & her Facebook or twitter SelinaBotham

CHRISTMAS

G I F T I D E A S

With Christmas rapidly approaching, we thought it may be useful to highlight some of the items that will be featuring under the Christmas Tree this year. Custom-built PCs are immensely popular, as they provide you with exactly the specification and power required, built from the highest quality components available at the most advantage prices. Please come and discuss your needs with us. Tablets - there is an ever-increasing number of 7-10 “ tablets on the market. The Apple iPads are clear market leaders of the premium product/premium price area. We have Android tablets from £50.00 and Windows tablets starting from £95.00, which includes a full 12 month subscription of Microsoft Office. Sonos- with a wide selection of products, all with room filling sound. Liberate your music from only £169.00. Smart Home - make your home smart. With easy-touse and flexible remote connection devices, you can control your heating system, lighting control, domestic appliances and even CCTV and security monitoring. As the items all speak a “common language”, you can

build your kit bit by bit and mix different devices to create the optimum solution. Solid State Hard Drives (SSD) - this is the upgrade your computer has been waiting for. Due to dramatic price cuts in the cost of SSDs, now is a great time to upgrade. Having an SSD in your machine will speed up the loading and running performance hugely: we have just upgraded a machine which was taking 4.5 minutes to boot, but with the SSD installed, it now boots in 35 seconds. Costs start from £45.00 and we can install and copy all your data across if required. Gamers’ Mice, Mats and Keyboards - Yes we know it sounds odd, but we have a selection of high performing mice, keyboards and mouse mats specifically for the gamers out there. They are fully adjustable, with some keyboards being illuminated - it could be the answer for that present dilemma. Total Care - allow us to look after your computer fully. We will protect it from viruses and malware, we backup all its data to our cloud and provide unlimited remote and workshop support for just £100 + VAT per year.

As a long-term Beach Boys fan (and who isn’t?), I must recommend a film which documents the true life events surrounding the making of their brilliant 1966 album, Pet Sounds. Love and Mercy, which stars John Cusack as the angst-ridden genius, Brian Wilson, documents the life and times of a band of young brothers whose primary influence were the male harmony groups of the 1950s. In the mid-60s though, the driving force for the Wilson brothers was chart rivals, The Beatles, and after hearing their album, Rubber Soul, the BB’s prime composer, brother Brian, decided to hang up his surf board (not that he actually surfed) and dedicate his full attention to his own musical vision of the writing and recording of a long-player he aspired to release that he claimed would be “the best album ever made”, Pet Sounds. Along the way, as Love and Mercy documents, his own sanity was becoming a major concern for his nearest and dearest, and at times, the film takes us to the dark heart of a group in and out of the recording studio, as the boys tried to embrace ground-breaking songs that would go on to become classicss, such as Good Vibrations, Caroline No, Wouldn’t it be Nice, Sloop John B and many more, such as God Only Knows, a song that Paul McCartney called the “greatest song ever written”, and he should know! There’s no doubt that Pet Sounds is a masterpiece and a cry from the tortured soul of a man I’ve had the great fortune to get to know over the past few decades. Love and Mercy is without doubt one of the very greatest musical films of all time and I urge you to check it out.

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW FLAGSHIP BMW 7 SERIES

I have found another way to spell “luxury” when it comes to cars. It is quite simply... BMW. And more specifically, the 7-series, a masterpiece of a motor on the move upwards. It was launched UK-wise late October and I forecast it will put a scare into the hard-fought upmarket limo battleground. The brand new flagship 7-series is a brilliant re-hash of the model it replaces, bigger, better, even more efficient and loaded with the latest technical gadgetry. And, what’s more, it is a wee bit cheaper than its biggest, toughest competitor, the Mercedes-Benz S-class. My skinflint instincts, therefore, lean me towards the Bee-Em - but, in view of the vast improvement on its predecessor, the latest 7-series is superb value for money and enough of a hot-shot rival to worry Mercedes. Inside is a treat of luxurious wood veneers, plushy metallic surrounds, gizmos to blow your mind and satisfy the most geeky of us, with an

updated infotainment system that encompasses a touchscreen for the first time. As if the basic model was not roomy enough for four of the lengthiestlegged people, you can upgrade to the long wheelbase version which adds an extra 14cm to its stretch. Just to ensure ultra-comfort for those in the plushily spacious back-end, you can have electrically adjustable heated or cooled first-class lounge style seats. And how about this gimmick? A camera scrutinises your hand movements near the touchscreen and by simply wagging your fingers in its general direction, you can perform infotainment choices and functions, abracadbra-like. If you are not given to such showy handsignalled channel switching, there is a basic button display to do the job

instead. The whole atmosphere is one of hush-hush style, a gentle hum of an engine underpinning the refinement level and enabling the most confidentially-whispered tones from those sprawling in the back seats to be heard by those upfront. The BMW 7-series range topper’s feedback when you hoof its superbly smooth and responsive 3.0-litre diesel engine towards an inviting motorway’s distant horizon is a sheer joy of beneficial performance and un-bumpy response and its attack on the tighter corners and sharp bends has all the feel of a smaller, nippy car. BMW’s planners insist their largelimo customers prefer not too much change, and dodge any ideas of radicalisation, hence the new 7’s almost identical outward appearance to its older sibling. Underneath the profile, however, is a different story. A vast improvement. And a surefire seller. Specification: Model :BMW 7-series 730d.Engine:3.0-litre diesel. Speed: 155mph. 0-60mph in 6.1secs. BHP 265.MPG:60.1. Price: £64.530.

ince making its debut in March, the Ember Big Band has performed throughout Elmbridge and well beyond. It is now looking to recruit new talent in the trombone section. Deputy Musical Director, Lewis McGuinness, explained: “We are a band of committed volunteers, and most of us have families and day jobs. We often need `deps` when regular members are unavailable and also have to deal with a turnover of players when younger members take on new commitments or go off to uni.” The band sets a high musical standard, but also believes that music-making should be fun. Guitarist Simon Cushing is its newest recruit: “As a former rocker, the world of EBB has been tremendous fun,” he said. “The band is very welcoming and supportive and there`s a huge range of new music to get my teeth into, including big band standards, swing, Latin and covers of recent chart songs. I`ve learned a huge amount and am flexing new musical muscles! To top it all, there are chocolate digestives in rehearsal breaks!” The band`s musical director is trombone legend and renowned arranger, Bill Geldard. Born in County Durham, he learned his trade in local brass bands and school orchestras. After demob from National Service in the R.A.F., he joined the George Evans Orchestra as 1st trombone and played as a featured soloist. There followed spells with most of the big bands of the day, including the Squadronaires, Ted Heath, John Dankworth and Jack Parnell. Ask him about the high spots of his career and there is a very modest pause (probably because they are too numerous to mention). Then he recalls playing all over Europe with Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli and Sammy Davis Jnr.; having a solo specially written for him by Sinatra`s arranger, Nelson Riddle; performing with Henry Mancini at “The Pink Panther” film premiere in Switzerland; playing on the sound track of “Dr. No” and for the

theme tune of I.T.V`s “Minder”. Of the Ember Big Band, Bill said: “It`s a 23 piece amateur big band with three terrific singers, but we have a professional approach to everything we do. There`s a difference between being `amateur` and `amateurish`. Everyone involved understands that, otherwise I wouldn`t have taken this on. There are no short cuts to good musicianship. Regular rehearsal is the key, but we have a lot of fun along the way, and so, we hope, will our audiences.” If you`d like to find out more, please visit www.emberbigband.uk or contact Lewis McGuinness on 07785-370901. You may want to drop in to one of our `open rehearsals` at The Greyhound pub, Weston Green, on the first Monday of most months (do check).

eal reindeer will return to Garsons at Esher on Saturday 21st November to delight animal lovers young and old and mark the beginning of the festive season. Staying at Garsons in their speciallybuilt stable, the reindeer can be visited every day until Christmas Eve, when they will return to help Santa on the busiest night of the year. “The arrival of the reindeer is one of the highlights of the Christmas season for us at Garsons,” says director Ben Thompson. “They’re such beautiful, gentle animals, no-one who meets them can help but love them. We’re so pleased we’ve been able to bring them back to Garsons again this year, and we can’t wait for everyone to come and visit them.” The reindeer will be looked after by specially-trained reindeer helpers, who will be on hand to answer questions and reveal fascinating reindeer facts. The animals will enjoy a walk around the farm every day, and also their favourite reindeer feed which gives them all the vitamins and nutrients they need in order to be ready to guide Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. “The welfare of the reindeer is our most important concern, and we always work hard to make sure they are

C H R I S T M A S

comfortable, healthy and happy while they’re with us,” Ben explains. “Many people will never have seen reindeer before, even though they’re such an iconic part of Christmas. It’s great that by visiting the reindeer at Garsons, we can help children and adults learn about them.” There is no charge to visit the reindeer, but a collection at the enclosure will raise money for Garsons’ chosen local charities. In 2014, generous donations from Garsons’ customers raised over £8,000 for The Rainbow Centre, Fareham and Woking & Sam Beare Hospices. Visitors will also have a chance to meet Garsons’ Christmas Prince and Princess, and children can enjoy other festive activities at the farm, including writing a letter to Santa and a colouring competition – the winner will receive a personal letter and gift from Santa himself. Information: Open from 21st November 2015 to 24th December 2015. Opening times: 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm Sunday, 10am to 1pm Christmas Eve.
