any day now, I’m sure! There’s certainly a lot to read about inside Look Local this month: Wizards & Witches at Garsons Farm, tips from Bruce of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care about owning a new puppy (very handy as I just so happen to have one of those, see front cover!), David ‘Kid’ Jensen tells us about a new musical talent in Music Matters, and in addition to all this, information on local art classes, guitar lessons, Spanish lessons and a lovely French Club too. It’s all going on around here, I can tell you! I’m off to the garden now with my umbrella and wellies to crack on with the puppy housetraining. She’s doing very well! Next training project has to be to persuade her that she really isn’t a mole! My poor lawn! Wishing you a great month, Warmest regards,

Too tall for the space, and the garden will feel dark & too enclosed. Too open, & there is no privacy. Overly ornate, & the boundary can dominate the whole garden. As with every element of your garden, a boundary should be considered in relation to the other elements in the garden, so that all aspects work together to create a beautiful but also practical space for you to enjoy. Here are a few boundary tips:To create a narrow boundary, a wooden fence is an obvious choice in many situations. Painted dark-grey, it recedes beautifully, creating a gentle backdrop. Black can also be effective: it makes more of a statement & is probably best in a very contemporary garden. Boundary fences clothed with climbers will give a narrow & green boundary. A wall is a wonderful timeless solution, cheap to maintain, though costly to build. Where you don’t want to hide the boundary, it’s often a great solution, creating the beginnings of a character-filled ‘walled garden’ If you need a taller screen, consider a pleached hedge (effectively a hedge on stilts), see the photograph above. It will leave the fence & flower bed free for planting. Also, consider a hedge. It can give a cool green backdrop to your garden & will also be
1

good for wildlife. A black chainlink fence alongside will disappear as the hedge grows & will keep dogs & children enclosed. The easiest evergreen hedge is yew. It’s not as slow as many people think & will create an easy-to-maintain, beautiful hedge for years. If it gets too big, it can be cut back hard. Avoid leylandii & laurel unless you have a huge garden or are happy to cut them back several times each year. They fill out quickly & get too tall, & importantly, too wide. They may seem cheap to buy but when you consider maintenance costs, they become less of a bargain. My favourite evergreen flowering hedges are escallonia & Osmanthus delavayi or Hebe salicifolia in a sheltered garden. Eleagnus x ebbingei is a greyleaved evergreen with sweetly scented flowers. Choisyia ternata is another to consider if you don’t mind a wider hedge. Just a few other things to consider:-
6 7 8
Always check your deeds. Some roads have restrictions on boundary treatments. 1.8m is standard height for a fence & you shouldn’t exceed it. Close to a highway, other rules apply, so check the planning portal. With all types of boundaries, discuss it with your neighbours, agree who is responsible for it & where the boundary line is. A rule of ‘fence etiquette’ is to put the fixings on your side if it’s your fence. This is so that you can easily maintain the fence. Discussing your garden design & boundary decisions with your neighbour is often a great way to keep everyone happy & is best done well before the garden build begins. MONTHLY TALKS
PUPPY LOVE PPuppies are cute and hard to resist, which is why many dog owners choose them over older dogs. But turning your playful puppy into a well-rounded ‘grown-up’ takes time and patience.
Where to start? Puppy socialisation. The core period for this and the whole puppy learning process is from birth to 14-16 weeks. And for the first 6-8 weeks (a puppy should not leave its mother before then), it’s very much down to its mum and siblings. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we take on puppies from 12 weeks old and ensure this steep early life learning curve is followed through in three key steps: 1. Interaction with other dogs to develop social skills, coupled with plenty of time to chill-out and rest. Puppies mustn’t be over-exercised, as their bodies are still developing. Too much activity can be as harmful as not enough. 2. Several small meals throughout the day. Just like babies, puppies need to eat little and often to ensure they have all the nutrition required to grow into healthy adult dogs. Feeding them regularly and separately is also a valuable training tool, as the best-behaved puppy gets fed first and the others soon learn that good behaviour is rewarded. 3. Lots of human contact so they recognise their human handlers as leader of the pack. This is not just a good social skill but a safe one too, as all dogs are so much easier to train and develop when they are puppies. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

Cook the peas in boiling water for a minute and drain thoroughly. Heat half the oil in a frying pan & add the onion & garlic. Cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes until softened & starting to brown. Add the root vegetables & cook for a further couple of minutes until golden. Stir in the curry powder & cumin & cook for a further minute. Stir in the peas, coriander & seasoning. Brush a sheet of filo with oil, then fold in half. Cut in half across the diagonal to give two triangles. Place a large spoonful of the filling on one end of a triangle of pastry & fold over to cover the filling, then keep folding until you have a triangular parcel. Pinch the edges together to seal. Repeat to make 12 samosas. Place on a dampened baking sheet & bake for 15 minutes until crisp & golden. Serve with the yogurt mixed with the mint sauce.

acking space and having decided moving house was not an option, Gemma and Sach Gholap chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to transform their pretty Victorian cottage in Teddington. Gemma reflects, “We knew we couldn’t stay in this house unless we made it bigger. We looked around but it is just so expensive to move.” After getting the loft converted two years in, they had waited another six months before they felt ready to tackle the ground floor extension. Gemma comments “We knew we needed lots of light coming in and used the same architect that had done the loft to draw up plans.” Attention then turned to choosing a builder. “We
24 Looklocal Magazine - October 2015
got loads of quotes from local companies and went to see two or three jobs from the top ones. The jobs we looked at from L&E looked really good, and people couldn’t say enough nice things about the team.” The comprehensive payment plan L&E provided also helped. “When the quotes came back, L&E’s was more detailed so we could be really clear on what we were getting for the money.” L&E’s team began to dig the foundations for the new extension in a cold, snowy January. Once footings were complete, the team moved inside and soon after Gemma and Sach sensibly decided to move in with friends for a month. They kept in close contact with the site foreman however. “We had

regular meetings and he was really good at keeping us updated with progress. Once a week, we would sit down and agree what was happening and what we needed to buy next,” Gemma remembers. With the major building work complete, the team moved onto the second phase of the project. “We had a clear vision of what we wanted and we’d come along and discuss it with the foreman to work out the best options. My husband is a perfectionist and so they knew it had to be exactly right,” Gemma remembers. “The foreman was great. There was always really good attention to detail and the finish was really good.” Indeed with cleverly defined zones there is a seamless flow throughout the ground floor and the
oasis of calm belies its role as the hub of the house. The kitchen rooflights mean the ground floor space is flooded with light and the modern bi-folding doors open out for an uninterrupted connection with the garden space. Instead of moving, the couple can now put down roots. It’s also worth reflecting on the cost of moving versus building an extension and the value that creates in your home. Gemma puts it simply – “We couldn’t afford to buy this now!” Mr and Mrs Gholap are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

They may be late on the specialist scene, but with the CX3, Mazda has played a crucial game of catch-up in the cut-throat business of crossovers. It has come up with a sweetly handling and good-looking rival to the established and puzzlingly named Nissan Juke, Citroen Cactus and Vauxhall Mokka. What delayed them isn’t clear, and the Japanese crack at the compact crossover market may be a latecomer, but it is a sweetie of a small and useful SUV well worth the wait. And the money. The company’s styling studio ventured a design to rival the existing competition crossovers, and when the management first set eyes on the full-sized clay model, they did not falter for a second and ordered its immediate build. And the cut-throat area of crossover auto sales was quickly invaded by a slicker, smarter-looking rival to the Jukes, Cactuses and Mokkas...namely the CX3, baby brother to the CX5. Nothing was lost in the downsizing, quite the opposite. The newest challenger on the cylinder block in
the hard-fought crossover class is the personification of style, economy and practicality. What’s more, it is fun to drive. Even Porsche-owning Trophy Wife, a fussy and readily critical driver if a car fails to meet her preferences, was impressed by its firm feeling and crisply slick action six-speed gearbox. To say nothing of the chic styling and ample boot room for her Michael Kors cocktailwear on a party weekend away. It is not wanting on cabin space either, with enough legroom for four grown-ups and a go-any height driver’s equably adjustable seat. The general concensus of opinion among we so-called motoring experts is that the pint-sized CX3, the desirable sibling city car to the CX5, is a trendy and worthy top points
earner. Frugal, too. But in efforts to keep its price tag under £20,000, and this is not meant to be a picky moan, Mazda has perhaps over-indulged in too many plastic variants that could give it a rather cheapskate inside appearance to some buyers. The kit levels are definitely up on some of its rivals and even the entry level models enjoy benefits such as cruise control and touchscreen infotainment, power windows and door locks with a remote keyless entry facility. Because of its hard ride and susceptibility to sharp bumps, it is maybe not as at home on arduous motorway treks as it is in the city, but then you would probably buy it for the second purpose, in-town short commutes, rather than the first, longer and more arduous runs. Overall, in a sector where looks count for such a lot, the petite CX3 is a bargain buy. A winner.... Specification: my favourite, 2.0 2WD SE Nav. BHP118.Max speed 119mph. Zero-to-60mph 9.0secs.Mpg 47.8. Price £18,195.

NEW RISING TALENT
One of the great things about my chosen vocation is being able to champion new, rising and exciting talent and pass on their music to friends and family through my radio programmes. One such emerging star who caught my eyes and ears is the wonderful British singer/songwriter, Ella Eyre, who first found fame when collaborating with Rudimental in 2013 on their number-one selling hit, Waiting All Night, which also went on to win a Brit award for Best British Single of the Year. In 2014, she won a prestigious MOBO Award for best newcomer. Just 21 years old, she has a voice as striking as her huge hair-do. She tells us that her musical influences include Lauryn Hill, Etta James and Basement Jaxx. However, listening to her sing, she puts me in mind of Adele and Amy Winehouse. Her real name is Ella McMahon and her first love was competitive swimming before finding success and plaudits as a singer. She was raised in Ealing, West London, and is of Afro-Jamaican, Maltese and Scottish descent. She studied at Millfield School and attended the world-famous BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology where she studied musical theatre. The BRIT School was also responsible for launching the careers of the aforementioned Adele and Amy. In fact, it was her talents as a songwriter that gave her early commercial success and this venture led to her being discovered and encouraged as a performer in her own right. She found thousands of new fans when supporting the likes of Take That and Olly Murs a few months ago. As if all these credits weren’t enough, Ella also became the face of the advertising campaign for Emporio Armani Diamonds perfume. However, her most recent triumph is the recent release of her excellent debut album, Feline, which is bound to accelerate her ultimate destination of global awareness. Ella embarks on a UK tour in November, so try and catch her while you can.
WINDOWS10 In July, Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, was announced and was offered as a free upgrade to a large number of existing users, irrespective of the legitimacy of the original operating system. Microsoft stated their intention of having Windows 10 installed on over 1 billion machines by the end of next year, and indications are that Microsoft is on track to achievedthese ambitions. So what’s the fuss about? Windows 10 is very efficient, meaning that it can run quickly on a relatively low specification or older machine; the look and behaviour is a mixture of Windows 7 and Windows 8, making good use of the Start button, with tiles being available off the start menu for easy access. The general feeling from our users is that it is laid out very logically, and there is minimal transition from earlier versions to Windows 10. One of the new features introduced in Windows 10 is the integration of Microsoft’s intelligent personal assistant Cortana. Cortana allows you to talk to your computer and get it to perform tasks without any keyboard or mouse interaction. It is pretty clever and works well. Internet Explorer has been replaced with a new browser called Edge, which again offers you a speed improvement. However, not all websites are optimised
for Edge just yet. Buying a new machine with Windows 10 installed is a very logical step, but if you are using any old or existing software, check first with your software publisher that the versions you are using are compatible, as this can cause issues. If you are considering upgrading your existing operating system, we would recommend waiting for a few months, maybe until the New Year, as we have seen a variety of deployment problems, including: • The deployment failing to complete, with the machine stuck in loop • Machines failing to boot into Windows 10 and no roll facility back being available • The deployment completing but no users’ data is available • Program incompatibility, including some mainstream antivirus programs • Email programs failing to work We have overcome all issues but some resolutions have been very time-consuming. Needless to say, should you encounter problems, we are happy to resolve these issues for you. We have a variety of new and used machines with Windows 10 installed and running, so there is a wide choice of options for you.

ZOOMER

Zoomer.... the new ride-on that’s going places!
R
ecently, I met two very entrepreneurial local ladies, Liza Jacobs and Felicity Groombridge, who started their business Zoomer Ltd about three years ago. Zoomer is a fabulous early years ride-on toy, and having spent a lot of time on the development of the product and building their brand, they are now looking forward to an exciting future with it. Liza and Felicity have very complementary skill sets, enabling them to work together as a great team. Liza’s background is in finance, Felicity’s in fundraising and marketing, and together they have learnt so much about manufacturing and the complicated world that is Toy Safety Standards! With five children between them, Liza and Felicity have a purpose-built in-house toy-testing facility, and over the past few years, they have trialled many different rideon toys. Zoomer has really filled a gap in the market: it is not a baby toy or a balance bike, and children are able to ride on it from 18 months. The three wheels (two at the back) make it very stable and it doesn’t even fall over when the child gets off. Liza and Felicity showed me a couple of little video clips of children who really were zooming around on this fabulous toy!
42 Looklocal Magazine - October 2015
Zoomer it already at twenty local nurseries and playgroups, and can also be found at Bocketts farms and Piglet play centre. It has proved to be very popular with the children and several groups have come back and ordered extra Zoomers to fill demand. It is made from strong and durable material and is easy to clean, and is also manufactured in the UK, something that was important to Liza and Felicity. There is so much involved in launching a product such as this and I think they have done an amazing job to get to this stage. Zoomer is ready to sell and they have plenty of brilliant brandbuilding ideas up their sleeves too, the first being a UK tour for Zoomer, visiting nurseries and playgroups along the way. The journey can be followed on the company website and Facebook pages! I think the next few years will be very busy for Liza and Felicity. If you have a connection with a local pre-school and think Zoomer would be well received, why not get in touch and ask for a Zoomer trial? It retails at £49.95, which is an excellent price for such a great toy. For more information, please see the company website www.zoomer.co.uk or call 01932 864755. It was a pleasure to meet Team Zoomer! Look Local wishes you every success in the future.
