CLAYGATE 5K RUN FRIED CHICKEN MASSALA RESTAURANT COMPUTER TIPS WHAT’S ON IN ESHER WHAT’S COOKING?
Once again, as I write this message, the rain is falling outside! What a great British summer! I’m not sure about the predictions for the weeks ahead, but let’s just hope that there are enough sunny days to warm our bones! We decided not to let the weather get us down here in the Look Local office. We are in summer mode, despite the weather, and have just enjoyed a ‘deadline ice cream treat’ with the heater on ! We have plenty of local news for you to enjoy in this issue; we are delighted to bring you an update on the ever-popular Claygate 5k run, see inside for details. In addition to this, I wanted to share a ‘fine dining’ experience which I enjoyed in a delightful Indian restaurant in Cobham. I hope you enjoy hearing all about it and maybe you will be tempted to give it a go for yourselves, it really is very nice indeed! Have you been to The Medicine Garden? It’s on the road between Effingham and Cobham, with plenty of free parking and a selection of lovely refreshment areas. It makes for a really splendid afternoon out. I went along recently to an open evening at The Art Shed, one of the small businesses within the grounds, and I was very impressed by the selection of art on offer. Not just the obvious either: this collection of artists provides an eclectic selection, demonstrating a wide array of skills. My photos don’t really do it justice, but hopefully might just inspire a few of you to visit. I’m sure you will enjoy it and it’s not far to travel for a lovely afternoon out. See inside for more details. This month, we have included a bumper double page of ‘What’s on’. I hope you will find this useful and will be able to enjoy some of the events which we have included. That’s about it for this month. We will be back in September, following a short summer break, so until then, stay safe and I wish you a wonderful summer!

SATURDAY 5 JULY 2015 | 10.30AM | CLAYGATE RECREATION GROUND
J
oin 500 runners for the Claygate Country Five on Sunday 5 July at 10.30am. This five-mile event, on the footpaths around Claygate’s beautiful green countryside, is open to everyone, whether you’re competing for a place or taking part just for the fun of it. The run starts and finishes at Claygate Recreation Ground. Spurred on by cheering crowds from around the village, adults and children of all ages come back to compete year after year to see if they can do even better and of course to have fun! There are four age groups for both male and female runners (including Juniors under 16), plus a Family Section for father/son, father/ daughter, mother/son and mother/daughter. Neil Aitken, the overall winner of last year’s Claygate Country Five, said: “The run was great! A bit muddy,

but I like the mud - you expect it on a woodland course”. Christine Coffin, who entered the race for the first time last year, said: “It was my first ever running race since school. I was so excited to be running in my local village and it was brilliant to see my kids’ faces”. Add this to your list of runs this summer, or even make it your first - you might win a trophy! Or bring your family and friends and cheer on the runners - everyone is really friendly and you can enjoy the beauty of Claygate too. Enter the Claygate Country Five either online BEFORE 3 July - Adults £12 / Juniors £5 (under 16), or enter on the day between 9am and 10am ONLY Adults £15 / Juniors £6.

LOOKS AT HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM A LARGE GARDEN
It’s wonderful to have lots of room, & although sometimes clients feel daunted if they have a large garden to fill, I find all that space inspiring. Problems seem to be that large gardens can feel ‘unfriendly’ & a bit too empty, or perhaps there is a temptation to fill the space with too many small features which are out of scale in such a large space. Here are my tips for creating a successful large garden:-
1
Consider scale & proportion & design generous-sized areas that complement the proportions of the house & also maintain a feeling of space. You won’t be able to use standard garden centre water features or pots, as they will be much too small. Create layers of interest by dividing the garden into spaces that have their own character; this will help ensure you make the most of all the garden. Routes around the garden will encourage exploration & can be designed to maximise the impact of the best views as you walk around the garden, also making the most of all that lovely space. The view back towards the house is often a view which is overlooked & is often the most impressive.
2 3
4
Consider keeping a long view from the house down the garden in places, especially as a view from one of the main rooms in the house. I find this is a great way to create a wow factor from the house. Maybe create a garden within a garden, where the peak flowering coincides with your favourite season. With plenty of space, you can even create an area of the garden for each season where you can group your favourite seasonal treasures. Keep weekly maintenance down by including areas where grass is kept long to give a meadow feel. These grass areas need to be carefully designed in blocks or swathes so that it doesn’t look like you ran out of energy with the mower.

Use trees to give you structure. An avenue of trees, all the same type & size planted as a grid, will look stunning & very grand, especially along a long drive. A copse can be a destination in its own right: hung with hammocks, it becomes a place to spend a lazy day in the shade with a book. Whatever you do, be bold & create wide, generous spaces – you have the space, don’t be afraid to use it. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. FEAR AND FRIED CHICKEN A PLAY FROM ANSTEE BRIDGE | 8TH JULY 2015 | THE ROSE THEATRE
F
ried Chicken is a play from the ‘ends’, developed in collaboration with & performed by local 14-21yr olds. A group of young people are trapped in a fried chicken shop - they explore friendships & flirtations, love & disappointment, bullying & violence, through their mobile phones & face-to-face. It’s shocking and stuff gets bad, but Fried Chicken will ‘mek a man laugh & mek a man cry’. You will either relate to the issues in this thought-provoking play, or it will give you more understanding of the pressures that young people face today. Fried Chicken has been written by local writer Alice Thirling together with Frankie Bryant, a student from Anstee Bridge, who has just won a writing competition at the Donmar Warehouse. It’s directed by Louise

I RECENTLY ENJOYED REVISITING MY FRIENDS AT MASSALA INDIAN RESTAURANT IN COBHAM
I
t was great to catch up with owner Bishnu. He is always very welcoming and seemed genuinely happy to see us! We enjoyed a delicious dinner and sampled some very tasty Nepalese dishes which have been added to their menu recently. For those of you who have not yet visited Massala, may I just say that it’s no ordinary Indian restaurant: it really does offer a fine dining Indian experience and at an affordable price, too. With no artificial colours used in the preparation, the food is more natural-looking (and tasting) than you would expect from your run-of-the-mill curry restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is beautifully laid out and it has a bright, modern feel about the place. Our waiter Kamal was very friendly but unintrusive, and he did a great job of looking after us. We started our meal in a traditional way with some light, crispy poppadums which were served with a selection of homemade chutneys and relishes. Yes, homemade! Very well worth the effort, as they were delicious. We then enjoyed some unusual Nepalese dishes, including Chicken Pakora, marinated with a wonderful selection of Nepalese herbs & spices. This was accompanied by some Aloo Tikki, a sort of potato mixture served with a delicious homemade mint sauce, followed by my personal favourite dish of the evening, scallops served in the most deliciously thick coconut sauce. My mouth is
watering as I think about these! And so the selection of tastes kept coming. One thing I hadn’t thought about before was the possibility of an oriental influence on Indian food. But Nepalease Chilli Chicken certainly had it, with a distinct sweet and sour taste about it. Very delicious it was, too! A whole array of vegetarian dishes are available and many of these also come from Nepal. The vegetables we had were, without a doubt, the very best I have ever eaten in an Indian restaurant: not over cooked and indistinguishable, but slightly al dente and very fresh and seasonal. Everything we ate was cooked to a very high standard. Even the naan bread was light and crispy and the pilar rice light and fluffy. It was a very enjoyable meal. Of course, all your favorite Indian dishes are also available, so if you fancy a regular curry, that is not a problem either. The chef at Massala has 20 years’ experience under his belt and Bishnu a further 18 years working in the restaurant business. This certainly comes across, as the food is amazing and the front of house is also well-managed. We spotted Bishnu greeting regular customers like old friends: he was even invited to join them at the end of the evening and share a coffee, which he enjoyed doing. The staff at Massala really take a pride in their work and this is certainly reflected in the experience when you eat there. Open every day between 5pm and 11pm, this lovely restaurant is highly recommended by Look Local.

W HAT T O L O O K F O R I N A H IG H P E R F O R M A N C E C OM P U T E R There are many reasons why you would need a high performance computer. It may be that you play games, photo edit, video edit, or you do 3D design or animation. If your machine’s performance is not up to the task, this will result in poor graphics quality or very jerky performance, or if it’s taking ages to reflect any changes you have made, now is the time to address the problem. We have a significant range of truly high performance PCs and laptops which will consign your previous issues to the “distant memory” department. Our PCs are all custom-built, so we can build the very best machine for your purposes,. The laptops are pre-assembled and enjoy a stunning specification. What to look for: Processor The raw performance is supplied by the processor (CPU), and the device you should be going for is the Intel Core i7 quad core device. Some laptops have Core i7 CPUs with dual core CPUs; they provide you with less power and are generally of lower performance Solid state hard drive (SSDs) Programs and data are stored on the hard drive in the PC, and the faster you can access this information, the faster the PC will respond. The hard drive type that has been used in PCs for the last 20 years has been a mechanical hard drive, and whilst they can hold huge amounts of
data, their access speed is quite slow. The solid state hard drives offer dynamic performance, up to 20 times faster than a mechanical drive, but the SSD’s capacity tends to be less, so our solution is to install both. The SSD is used to store your Windows system and programs, whilst the mechanical hard drive is used to store all your data Graphics card This is a device which resides inside your machine and manages the information displayed. There are two main manufacturers of graphics cards: NVidia and Radeon, with a variety of models in the range. Going for the most up to date graphics card could cost as much as £600.00 just for the card, but selecting the next model back in the range (which was the very best graphics card only 2 or 3 months ago) will reduce the cost of the graphics card to £290.00. Other factors Having at least 8Gb of RAM is important, as is having a good powerful power supply to provide a reliable and regulated power feed to the components. A quality case with good cooling and thermal qualities is also essential, and finally the motherboard must be of a suitable standard to cater for your needs. There are a number of factors you need to consider, so before you make that decision, come and talk to us to ensure you are covering all the aspects required.

Back in the days when proper musicians played proper music…I recall a dinner party game in which everyone round the table would invent their own pop/rock outfit & try to outshine the rest of the guests with their choice of band members. It comes from a time when it was big news if, say, the lead guitarist of one group left one big name group for another. This would have applied to The Who, Cream, Yardbirds, Yes, the Faces & many more. So if I were to play this game of creating brand new bands, I’d probably pick Keith Moon, the late drummer with the Who, as my drummer. Wild at times, but I also found him to be the perfect gentleman on other occasions. Bass guitar would have to be played by the lovable man from the Small Faces & later the Faces. A solid, dependable guy called Slim Chance who also wrote enduring songs for Rod Stewart & co. as well as his own backing band that he left The Faces for. Keyboards would need to be played by my old mate & keyboard genius Rick Wakeman, who played with Cat Stevens, David Bowe & Yes before going solo. Rhythm guitar is tricky but I’d have to go for George Harrison, an underrated maverick who was as influential as they come & would qualify for lead guitar had I not picked Jimmy Page for his incredibly full & dynamic presence with Led Zeppelin, & as for vocals…... Chrissie Hynde, the Pretenders singer with her fantastic range of styles, from hard-hitting rock to delicate soul, as demonstrated on Thin Line Between Love & Hate. So what do you think? Now all I need is a name for my band….?

Senile decay is a wicked saboteur of the occupants of Memory Lane and it wreaked its havoc yet again on me when I strove to recall what Lexus saloon I tested a decade or so ago. I was stirred to jogging my mind for a flashback as a comparison when I set about reviewing a complete contrast to the whispering wotsit I sampled ages ago to Lexus’s RCF roaring firebrand new release. The roomily elegant saloon of yesteryear revelled in a hush of an engine so quiet that I was duped into worrying it had packed up as I waited at, say, traffic lights. The same level of dupe cannot be said of the latest Lexus, their wonderful new challenger in the wild and woolly world of high performance 2x2 sporting speedsters. But you’ll have to be fast off the mark to grab one: I’m told that only 200 initially will be on sale in the UK. What you will get for your hardearned is a whizz of a hand-built motoring treat - the most powerful V8 road car the company has ever
built, endurance-tested to the limit on the world’s most demanding race circuits by skilled drivers who know how to take a car way beyond the safety limits that we sensibly impose on ourselves. To sit in the snug, superbly appointed leather-clad cockpit in front of two rather tight socalled passenger seats is an oasis of simplicity and calm with a nonbewildering array of instruments. Those minimal back seats, hardly roomy enough for the offspring, are further rendered useless by the severely curved roofing that dips deeply over the rear end. The benefit is that the boot is of a very useable size, and that’s more than most of its main rivals, such as the F-type Jaguar, dare boast. And the whole Lexus set-up carries
enough insulation and electronic gizmos to keep the engine noise at bay and ensure the driver is aware of any looming perils. As an example, there is an alert to remind you sharply if you carelessly wander out of your lane, plus blindspot monitoring. The RCF is a welcome breakthrough for a car maker better known for its SUVs and big saloons, and to take on the established likes of Jaguar, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes is indeed a bold move. But esssentially, it ticks all the crucial boxes and, to my mind, is a surefire winner, albeit a heavyweight two-tonner compared with, say, the 150kg lighter BMW M4. When you give the engine some hearty revs and stir the rear-wheel drive into full action, the rewards, either on the tight and twisty side road wiggles or cruising M-way stretches, are a feeling of composure and safety. RCF? Racy. Comfy. And fast.. Specification: Lexus 2x2 V8.HP 467. Top speed 168mph.0-60 in 4.5 seconds. 26mpg. Price: £59,995.

KITCHEN DREAMS
M
atthew and Laura Burgess loved their 1930s home in Long Ditton but the tiny kitchen made family living difficult. They appointed Lofts and Extensions to complete a single-storey extension, which created the open-plan kitchen, dining and family room they dreamed of. The couple planned their building project for a long time before commencement. They’d been very impressed with their neighbours’ build, as Laura explains, “Our neighbours had building work done with L&E and we were really impressed with the speed at which everything was completed and they told us how happy they were with the work. We got other quotes as well, but we liked the L&E approach.” One of the key attractions of L&E was the timescales in which they promised to complete the project. The Burgess Family have two children, with Beatrice being only six months old when the build started: “We
knew living through building work with two small people was going to be difficult so we were keen for a company that could work quickly and efficiently,” laughs Laura. When the build started Laura and Matthew couldn’t have been more pleased with the process. “The builders had a great work ethic, but as well as working really hard, we were very impressed with the quality of their work. They were also fantastic with the children. We were able to watch the work progress and the foreman took the time to explain what they were doing and the process to Elliot, which he loved. It really included him in the work and fired his curiosity,” remembers Laura. And now the project is finished how is life different for the Burgesses? “It’s changed the way we live completely. We couldn’t even fit the highchair in the kitchen before and now we spend all our time in this room.” smiles Laura. And they’ve already recommended L&E to some more neighbours.

GRAND HOTEL
SON NET IN MAJORCA
T E D M AC AU L EY HO L I DAY R E T R E AT R EV I EWS
A
s the holiday season gathers momentum, I want to tip you off about a spectacular dining setting ... a tree
house. And, no, don’t panic, you don’t have to swing up to it like a loinclothed Tarzan. Trophy Wife managed it elegantly, gliding 30-feet up the spiral staircase in her Michael Kors cocktail frock and altitudinous high heels. Two glam friends, Sara and Denise, both City financial company bigwigs, also hit the heights for a gettogether with the Macauleys at the memorable Gran Hotel Son Net in Majorca. When you traipse to the top of the sturdy tree in front of the centuriesold hotel, the eagle’s eye view across
the Sierra Tramuntana Mountains is a breathtaker. Sun-drenched day gives way to balmy evening, and whether you are a romantic twosome or eight gourmandising chums, ten if you are only up there for a stand-up cocktail party, you will revel in the twinkle of lights from the villas of the well-off that illuminate the black mountain backdrop. The 31-room hotel, opened in 1998 and developed from a 17th century mansion belonging to a gallant Spanish knight, has been the luxy stopover for an endless list of international royalty, US presidents, supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Heidi Klum, fashion queen Stella McCartney, Rod Stewart and Hollywood idol Michael Douglas and his missus Catherine Zeta Jones,
to list but a few of the glittering guests. No doubt they all slept in the awesome Presidential suite, my and TW’s kip for a privileged doze. If, like me, you feared the island was a haven for the tattooed bucketand-spade hordes, all you have to do is take an inexpensive cab ride halfan-hour north of Palma airport to the village of Puigpunyent and the overlooking Son Net, a new way of spelling t-r-a-n-q-u-i-l-l-i-t-y. I have visited half a dozen times and I am sure that figure will be doubled ... just as it is repeated by the VIP drop-ins who, like me and TW, are content to stay put ... but realise that, barely 20 minutes away in any direction, there is yet another Majorca surprise waiting to be discovered.
