ASK BRUCE:
D O G G Y PA D D L E This month, we tackle swimming lessons canine-style, as requested by reader Michele who has a six-year-old boxer that loves to paddle but never actually swims. Swimming is an excellent source of exercise for dogs. It’s great for building muscle strength without putting too much pressure on their joints, which is why it’s often used as a post-injury rehabilitation tool. Some breeds, particularly labradors and spaniels, take to it, well, like a duck to water! Others, such as chihuahuas and pugs, are very reluctant. Boxers can and do swim, but are not renowned for it. This is partly due to their small tail and muzzle design, neither of which makes for natural doggy water-babies. Here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, our dogs love to swim and learn from each other. We have large paddling pools for them to swim in and smaller ones just for splashing around. For the less confident swimmers, the smaller paddling pools help familiarise them with water and build their confidence. They can then watch their other four-legged friends swimming in the larger pools and eventually join in too. Like children, dogs learn from other dogs and tend to copy. What better encouragement than seeing your pals having a splash and wanting to join in? As a result, we’ve seen breeds that stereotypically don’t like water turn into voracious swimmers – including boxers! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Esher.

PERFORMANCE MACHINES
There are many reasons why you would need a high performance computer. It may be that you play games, photo edit, video edit, or you do 3D design or animation. If your machine’s performance is not up to the task, this will result in poor graphics quality or very jerky performance, or maybe it’s taking ages to reflect any changes you have made. If so, now is the time to address the problem. We have a significant range of truly high performance PCs and laptops which will consign your previous issues to the “distant memory” department. Our PCs are all custom-built so that we can create the very best machine for your purposes. The laptops are pre-assembled and enjoy a stunning specification. What to look for: PROCESSOR The raw performance is supplied by the processor (CPU), and the device you should be going for is the Intel Core i7 quad core device. Some laptops have Core i7 CPUs with dual core CPUs, but they provide you with less power and are generally of lower performance. SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE Programs and data are stored on the hard drive in the PC; the faster you can access this information, the faster the PC will respond. The hard drive types that have been used in PCs for the last 20 years have been mechanical hard drives, and whilst they can hold huge amounts of data, their access speed
is quite slow. The solid state hard drive offers dynamic performance, up to 20 time faster than a mechanical drive, but the SSD’s capacity tends to be less, so our solution is to install both. The SSD is used to store your Windows system and programs, whilst the mechanical hard drive is used to store all your data. GRAPHICS CARD This is a device which lives inside your machine and manages the information displayed. There are two main manufacturers of graphics cards: NVidia and Radeon, with a variety of models in the range. Going for the most up to date graphics card could cost as much as £600.00 just for the card, but selecting the next model back in the range (which was the very best graphics card only 2 or 3 months ago) will reduce the cost of the graphics card to £290.00. OTHER FACTORS Having at least 8Gb of RAM is important, as is a good powerful power supply to provide a reliable and regulated power feed to the components. A quality case with good cooling and thermal qualities is also essential, and finally, the motherboard must be of a suitable standard to cater for your needs. There are a number of factors you need to consider, so before you make that decision, ensure you come and talk to us to ensure you are covering all the aspects required.

EXTENDING
THE SEASON OF INTEREST AWARD-WINNING LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER SELINA BOTHAM
GIVES SOME TIPS & HINTS FOR EXTENDING THE SEASON OF INTEREST IN YOUR GARDEN Many people love their garden at a certain time of the year but feel it has definite periods of ‘lack’. I think this is because it’s easy to find yourself in the garden centre, making an impulse purchase and of course, if you do that in spring each year, you’re going to end up with a spring or early summer peak. Show gardens look amazing but do remember they are designed for a peak on judging day. Also, most designers assume (for the judging) a beautiful loamy, moisture-retentive soil and full sun. We don’t all have that in our real gardens - certainly not in Claygate! I’m not suggesting you never visit a garden centre or show garden again, but do plan for the seasons, as well as choosing a pretty plant that makes you smile. For winter, you need to concentrate on the overall form of the garden and the structure of the planting. Winter shapes of deciduous trees, shrubs and even perennial flowers with interesting seed-heads and wispy grasses can be really pleasing. A good balance of evergreens (too many can be overpowering and even depressing) is important so the garden feels comfortable. Make sure you create balance around the garden, and also include different textures and shades of green. Variegated foliage is out of fashion these days but it can still look good as long as there aren’t too many conflicting colour ways.
Spring is great fun - there are so many spring bulbs, and you can mix and match and even have a different colour and mood changing by the month. The slight catch with spring bulbs is that they need to be chosen in late summer and then planted in autumn for the following spring. I am passionate about bulbs as they can be planned to compliment the rest of the planting and can add little highlights of colour or big swathes if you are prefer. There are bulbs for every month from January through to May/June and most of them keep coming back year after year. If the timing works out, I can plant a carpet of crocus under a new lawn if its laid in autumn. These little treasures really brighten up the garden in those dark months of late winter/ early spring. Summer - again it’s important to spread the interest and also think about the months that are most important to you. There is not much point planting lots of lavender if you’re always on holiday in July. Late
24 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2016
summer through to September is often a dull time in people’s gardens and it’s wonderful to come back from holiday and find that you still have flowers in your garden. Asters are splendid for this time of year, as are sedums, hydrangeas and ornamental grasses. Autumn - when you plan your structural planting for winter, think also about the autumn picture you want to create, so choose some ‘back bone’ planting to have yellow leaves, some red and some with berries. The seasons provide an exciting opportunity, as the garden is always changing and you certainly can’t get bored when you have a new work of art, according to the time of year. If you would like to improve & make the best of seasonal change in your garden & need some professional help, contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her website www. designsforallseasons.co.uk and her Facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

P A S T
TO PRESENT
It’s not often that you get to show your contemporary family home to the person that lived in the house over 70 years ago. But for Tom Platts, after an impressive extension, that’s exactly what happened. Tom, his wife and young daughter live in a Twickenham home with large, enviable rooms and a modern interior. Yet originally the house began life as a semi-detached, old brick, worker’s cottage. It started with planning for an extension on the kitchen and downstairs living space. “My wife and I decided we wanted to take out the old kitchen, expand into the side return and knock three downstairs rooms into one to create one large living space.” Tom contacted around 12 building companies but after seeing another build in progress in his area by L&E (Lofts and Extensions), he decided to contact them for a quote. “One of the surveyors came straight over. Their prices are in the low- to mid-range but I was particularly impressed by the contract and payment schedules,” said Tom. “I work in law and so I am interested in contracts. It was by far the most professional I had seen and I trusted them from the start.” BUILDING TRUST Once all the planning procedures
were secured, preparation on the build began. “The team that arrived from L&E was great even before the build started. They explained that it would get very dusty so we could make the necessary arrangements. They also gave us a schedule of key dates of completion so we could understand at each stage what was being done and that the deadlines were met.” Tom also points out that unlike other building companies, L&E work to a schedule so that payments can be made as and when they are completed. “Another example of how professional I found L&E was when they noticed our roof was slightly lower at one side. Rather than try to work around this, they talked with us and we all agreed to level the whole roof out,” said Tom. “With this and every decision throughout, we were always kept informed.” Talking on the finishing touches and extras to the build, Tom is really impressed: “They kept coming back to make more changes and to check that nothing had shifted since completion.
The quality of the finishing has been fantastic and they made it look so easy. MODERN-DAY FAMILY HOME Now with a huge downstairs living space, large doors that open out onto decking, Velux windows in the beams and big island in the centre of the kitchen; the room is the perfect family and party room. “The project has been way above our expectations. L&E produced something for us that is the envy of all our friends and we feel so proud to have produced something so beautiful.” Not long after, Tom noticed an elderly man looking inquisitively around the front of the house. The two got chatting and it turned out that the man, in his nineties, used to live in the house as a young boy during the 1930s. “I invited him into our home and showed him how we lived here today. “He was overwhelmed by what he saw. He said it was beautiful and was amazed it was being lived in this way. Undoubtedly the house looks fantastically different to when he lived here and I would 100 percent recommend L&E.”

WORDS BY DAVID KID JENSEN
SIR GEORGE MARTIN
I was greatly saddened recently to read of the passing of the man universally known and loved as the 5th Beatle, the wonderful producer and renowned gentleman, Sir George Martin. I was privileged to get to know him in my Capital Radio days, as George was one of the founders of Capital Radio. He used to come and visit the studios and was always interested in the process and the way we operated. He also wrote the official themes for both Capital Radio and also Radio 1. Sir George, who died at the age of 90, was one of the key engineering and production team at EM. He was part of the generation of pop pioneers who used to wear white lab technicians overalls before work clothing became more relaxed and T -shirts and denim became more the norm. He first met The Beatles in 1962 and went on to have no fewer than 49 hits with the fabled 4, including 30 number one singles and 23 numbe ones. No wonder that he was so admired and successful. In the 50s, he recorded mainly comedy and novelty records with the likes of Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Bernard Cribbins among others, but he was particularly excited about working with the Beatles with their offbeam wit and presences and he was convinced they had what it would take to become a global success story. When I think of Sir George today, I am reminded of an interview he did in 2007 in which he told Mark Ellen that he had all the money he could want and that he tended to look at people and think; “Are you a good human being? That’s what impresses me most, rather than what they’ve achieved. These days, people don’t believe in anything apart from money and success. I really believe family and love are more important than anything.” Love is truly all you need.....
