Royal Horticultural Society celebrates Edible Britain for National Gardening Week Encouraging everyone to grow-your-own is the theme of this year’s National Gardening Week (29 April–5 May 2019)

© RHS Jason Ingram

The nation’s biggest celebration of gardening returns for 2019 from Monday 29 April to Sunday 5 May 2019 as the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) encourages everyone to get involved in grow-your-own. The theme for this year is Edible Britain, with the RHS calling on gardeners up and down the country to share their love of home-grown produce. In 2019, the RHS hopes even more people will get involved and has created a brand new website so people can find out how to take part: www.rhs.org.uk/ nationalgardeningweek. Registration is now open for this year’s event, with everyone invited to upload their events and activities to the website and discover hints and tips for taking part. For this year’s Edible Britain theme, the RHS will aim to demonstrate that everyone has space to grow something delicious to eat, whether it’s a single pot of herbs on the windowsill or an allotment overflowing with courgettes and potatoes. RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter says, “After it was reported earlier this month that the RHS has seen sales of fruit and vegetable seeds outstrip flowers at its Plant Centres over the last year, it’s clear that people are keen to reconnect with where their food comes from. We’re supporting this burgeoning interest by encouraging garden centres, nurseries, clubs, societies and other organisations

to showcase their edible expertise, as well as highlighting grow-your-own at our RHS Gardens and Flower Shows.” Guy offers the following top tips to those who are wondering what they can grow this National Gardening Week: · There is still time to sow seeds of hardy plants like carrots, coriander, beetroot and parsley. In fact, clay soils may not be dry and warm enough for good results until this time. · Sowings of salads such as lettuce and radishes, and peas and broad beans, can be made now, and sow again every three weeks until early July for a continuous supply. · Cold-sensitive but quick-growing plants such as basil, courgettes, French beans, runner beans and sweetcorn can be sown indoors now for planting out in a month’s time (six weeks in the north). · Although it is too late to sow slow-growing tender plants such as aubergines, chilli peppers, sweet peppers and tomatoes, they are widely are widely offered as potted plants: buy them now to grow on in greenhouses, and set them out later when the risk of frost has passed. For more ideas and advice on what to grow and how to grow it, see the National Gardening Week website. For further info, visit www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley. MAKING YOUR MONEY

WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

Do I need to scan my receipts under Making Tax Digital? I run a small business and I think we will need to comply with Making Tax Digital in April. I am a bit confused over the term “digital records”. Does that mean I need to keep scanned copies of all my receipts and invoices?

Q.

Making Tax Digital for VAT applies to VATregistered businesses with taxable turnover in excess of £85,000. For VAT periods starting on or after 1st April, mandated businesses will be required to record transactions digitally and file their VAT returns using functional compatible software. As a business owner you are required to keep your records. The time limit varies depending on whether you’re a sole trade or partnership, or a limited company. Broadly, most accountants would recommend holding on to your receipts for 6 or 7 years. However, HMRC do not specify where you keep physical paper copies of your receipts, or whether you keep scanned copies. Even under MTD, HMRC do not insist that you keep scanned copies. So it’s up to you whether you hold on to the paper receipts or scan everything in. At TaxAssist Accountants, we work with Receipt Bank which is a receipt processor that stores your scans and pictures of receipts and captures the information necessary for your bookkeeping records.

A.

relief I’d get on it - can you talk me through it please? I assume by “lease” you mean you are in essence renting it? In which case, if the car has emissions under 110g/km, you can get tax relief on all of the payments. If the car’s emissions are above 110g/km, then 15% is blocked for income tax or corporation tax purposes. Please review the invoices carefully, as half of the VAT is often blocked on lease payments- on the assumption that they often have a mixture of business and personal use.

A.

What penalties can I expect for a late tax return? I am yet to file my tax return. What penalties can I expect?

Q. A.

You will be issued with an automatic late filing penalty of £100; irrespective of your tax liability or what tax you had outstanding at the time of filing. However, if you will file your return within the next three months, you will avoid the next wave of late filing penalties which are £10 per day- for up to 90 days. Further penalties are applied when the return reaches over 6 and 12 months overdue of the higher of £300 or 5% of the tax outstanding. Each of these penalties are all in addition to one another; not in place of. If you have any tax outstanding, interest will begin accruing immediately, and late payment penalties will begin being imposed after 30 days. If you’re struggling to keep on top of your tax affairs, your local TaxAssist Accountant would be happy to take care of them on your behalf- leaving you to concentrate on running your business. Feel free to contact us to be put in touch with your local office.

Elmbridge Flowerbed Competition

winning designs announced in Weybridge in Bloom launch

This year’s Flowerbed Competition’s winning designs were announced at Weybridge in Bloom’s launch at Weybridge Library on Saturday 2 March. Four prizes were awarded: The overall winning design was created by Aryan who took inspiration from the rowing boats he sees on his walks down the River Thames. His design will be planted in Churchfields recreation ground in Weybridge in June. The winner in the senior school category is Tvishaa who was inspired by her visit to Brooklands Museum and its strong motoring history. The winning adult entry by Nicolette Stacey was based on the cycle of life from birth, growing and evolving within the Weybridge community. Another adult entry caught the judging panel’s attention and was awarded the Green Spaces’ special commendation. It was designed by Pauline Wood

who based her concept on Weybridge’s recreational opportunities including sports, play, learning and arts, as well as key landmarks and the local strong sense of community. The newly formed ‘Weybridge in Bloom’ group was delighted to include the announcement of the Flowerbed Competition winning entries as part of their first ‘working group’ meeting. Weybridge in Bloom was recently formed to encourage residents and businesses to get together to make Weybridge a brighter, cleaner and greener place in which to live, work, and do business. It is a community project aimed at increasing civic pride in the local community. The group welcomes new members who have an interest in gardening and horticulture. If you like growing plants and want to give a hand to improve Weybridge’s green areas, they would love to hear from you. Councillor Malcolm Howard, Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Culture, said, “It is wonderful to see Elmbridge residents getting involved in the Flowerbed Competition. In addition to the artistic skills on display, it is a great way to bring the community together to work towards creating a more enjoyable place to live and giving it its own unique character. I look forward to seeing the flowerbed planted in the local recreation ground and many future Weybridge in Bloom projects coming into fruition for the enjoyment of the whole community.” For more information, call 01372 474568, email leisure@elmbridge.gov.uk or visit www.elmbridge.gov.uk/parks. “Modifying the

Electronics

of Modern Classic Cars“ COMPETITION BY TED MACAULEY

Every now and then a specialised book to treasure, either for entertainment or instruction, or both, finds its way into our midst and guarantees itself a welcome and prominent place in our display of volumes. And that is the case with Veloce’s superb publication entitled “Modifying the Electronics of Modern Classic Cars”. An impressive paperback of 256 pages and ten chapters, destined to clear up any worries and problems you might suffer if you are determined to pep up and revive your slightly older car’s performance with a level

of expertise passed on from a veritable star of the auto world, Julian Edgar. He offers the complete, step by step , easy-to-follow guide to advancements and improvements to 1990s and 2000s cars, that even an electronic dunce like me find comfortable to follow. It is typically, a finely tuned representative of the rather excellent automotive book publisher, Veloce in their vast list of publications, covering all aspects of motoring and featuring just about every make of car. The latest, aimed specifically at their WorkshopPro (IWorkshopPro) Series, will be a crucial accompaniment to the enthusiast who opts to spend a good deal of time fiddling with his cars in his home workshop and looking for improvements in performance and cutting the running costs. Author Edgar is just about as reliable as they come when it comes down to explaining how to set about giving your prized possession a new lease of life. He explains; ”I have been mechanically modifying my road cars for about 35 years now, doing it first as an enthusiast and then, as a journalist, writing about those modifications. “I’ve got a home workshop with a lathe, mill, bandsaw, welders and loads of other equipment. And it is my belief that the electronic modification of cars beats mechanical modes hands-down for cheapness, ease of work and results. “ And since I consider fuel economy an aspect of performance, I have taken a look at how you can improve it.. For example fitting a dashboard indicator that will allow you to drive more fuel-efficiently, running lean cruise with programmable engine management.”

So there it is: fortyquids-worth of quality instructive upgrading information. And I shall make the book yours for free if you can answer following:

POEM CORNER A Mum’s Lament (Written for a friend who was having a problem!)

For much too long we’ve been ignored So I want to suggest a new award For those hard-pressed Mums with a child like mine Who battle to get her to the Pool on time. Every Saturday morning, the same routine, I run out of patience, I want to scream. “Time to get up!” - “I’ve an awful head. Can’t I stay a bit longer in bed? I’ve cramp in my toe, my throat feels sore!” Whatever she says, I’ve heard it before. “My costume’s at school, there’s a tear in my hat, The strap on my goggles’ been chewed by the cat”. I nag and cajole, I shout myself hoarse To get her to swimming-which she loves of course. We zoom to the Centre, I whisper, “Have fun!” I’m a physical wreck and my day’s not begun. I sometimes wonder if it’s worth all the hassle For every week we have the same battle, But at special events and gala nights When they line up in their diagonal stripes, Poised to take off at the sound of the gun There’s no greater fan than her proud ‘old’ Mum!!

Gardening With Auntie Planty New Products

I have returned from an annual Garden Press event where everyone in the gardening world converges and I’d now like to share with you some of my thoughts on three of the new products that have just been introduced. Plant pots We have a big issue with plastic waste. In the garden world, the sad fact is that plant pots have been and are still black. I don’t know why they have to be black, except the notion that plant roots need to be protected from light, and black is a good colour to do this. Unfortunately, down at the Tip a black pot is not picked up as recyling potential, and so the black pot joins the millions of others in landfill. The good news is that you’ll begin to see these taupe pots appearing in your garden centre. They’re made from carbon black-free, recycled polypropylene. The trick here is they can be identified by near infrared light beams in the rubbish separating centres and so be taken off the conveyor belt. If you put a taupe pot out for recycling in your kerbside box, now it’ll be suitably identified at the Tip and will not end up in the wrong place. Celebration with seeds Another new bright idea is an extension of the nifty seed ball, which has now been taken one stage further, to celebrate anything you like, but the example here is a wedding. A handful of wildflower seedballs are packaged into a © 2019 Valerie McBride-Munro

small matchbox, which is then labelled appropriately. What a wonderful way to celebrate the nuptials of good friends? If you plant the seedballs according to the enclosed instructions, you’ll get wildflowers popping up each year; if you don’t, then you’ll still have the rattly match box to remind you of that joyous occasion. (https://www.seedball.co.uk) Strong ties Even townies know that sheep need shearing once a year, but did you know that the price fetched for the resulting clipped fleeces can be so low that farmers have resorted to burning them instead of a costly route to market. A resourceful group has now found an eco-friendly use which gardeners will find extremely useful. Twool® specifically uses the fleece of Whiteface Dartmoor sheep, one of Britain’s most ancient breeds. The long staple wool is perfect to create a yarn that is strong and durable, soft and springy but is completely biodegradable. It’s therefore 100% natural and even if you don’t use it in the garden, I think it’s very chi-chi to wrap a gift in brown paper with a natural tie. (https://www.twool.co.uk) Auntie Planty is a chartered horticulturist. She offers unique walk, talk and plan sessions in your own garden for happy, healthy plants. www.auntieplanty.co.uk

Inspiration!

Trapped! I left home for a last-minute place on a workshop in Guildford with little time to spare. Before long I was trapped in a long line of cars on Seven Hills Road behind a massive truck stuck behind first a cyclist, then a car parked half on, half off the carriageway. And then we were stopped by temporary lights at roadworks. I took a deep breath. I had lost too much time.

more tunnel-visioned, as our brains are programmed to focus on the current crisis (Danger!! Run!!), which narrows our ability to see different solutions to the problem, an essential part of the creative process. We are more susceptible to getting stuck in a loop when solving a problem, and on re-working specific details rather than exploring other options.

I got to the nearest public car park with minutes to spare and took out my wallet to pay for my three hours of parking. I was four pence short! I rummaged through my pockets. No spare cash. I looked around. No one in sight. Now what?

There are a number of ways we can counter the stress response: deep breathing, changing activity, moving the body. I had done all these the moment I walked away from the car park. And bingo! My creative brain had kicked in with the answer to my problem.

I saw a phone number for paying by card. I dialled the number. The automated instructions gave the details of a car I’d changed twice since last using this service. By the time I’d given the necessary information about my current car and debit card, several more minutes had elapsed. Finally the transaction was completed. I hurried down the hill to the venue, breathing a deep sigh of relief.

Has anything like that ever happened to you? Did you notice when the stress receded and you became aware of new options? What were you doing to get there?

And then it occurred to me! I could easily have paid for two hours of parking with the change I did have, borrowed 10p from someone, and nipped out in the coffee break to top up the parking meter!

+ CPCC ACC +

I’d been trapped in a limited perspective caused by the stress of running out of time and cash. I hadn’t stopped to think what my options were, or how else I could deal with the situation. Only once the stress was working its way out of my system as I walked and breathed properly, could I think clearly and creatively. And the solution was so simple. This isn’t uncommon. Under stress, the brain goes into the fight / flight / freeze response. It becomes
