MAKING YOUR MONEY
WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues, please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.
Q. A.
What is a tax code?
Your tax code tells you and your employer/ pension provider how much tax-free pay you’re entitled to. Assuming you have only one source income, it’s from employment and there’s nothing unusual about your circumstances or history, you’ll probably have a tax code from April 2018 of 1185L. The L indicates that you are entitled to the full personal allowance, but there are a variety of different letters you might see. The personal allowance from 6th April 2018 to 5th April 2019 will be £11,850 but the last digit is dropped when constructing the tax code. If you have more than one job, you may find that your personal allowance is split across the two jobs or you may have 1185L on one job and then BR on the other. HMRC will apply a BR code, when they believe you are a basic rate taxpayer and that your personal allowance is being used against another source of income you have. Any income with a BR code will be taxed at 20%. Your tax code is really important because it will affect how much tax you pay. When HMRC issues you with a tax code, you should make sure you check the calculations. If you think your tax code is wrong, you can contact HMRC to get it changed.
What should I do with a P800? I’ve received a P800 and it says I owe HMRC some tax. What should I do? A P800 is a tax calculation and HMRC will issue a P800 once a tax year has passed when they think you have overpaid or underpaid your tax. Only employees or pensioners are likely to receive a P800 because those completing tax returns should have under or over payments corrected through the self assessment system. If you receive a P800, you should firstly check all the figures in HMRC’s calculations, by checking your wages against P60s, benefits in kind from your employer against form P11D, bank interest back to your bank statements etc. If you receive some taxable state benefits, HMRC may add them together so you might need to call them to ask for a breakdown of these. Make sure HMRC hasn’t missed any allowances or expenses you’re entitled to, and conversely, that they haven’t given you allowances for items you’re no longer entitled to. You don’t want another tax bill later down the line. Once you’re happy the figures are correct, if you’re due a refund, the P800 should tell you how to go about getting your tax rebate. There are time limits for making claims for a tax refund – usually about 4 years from the end of the relevant tax year. If you have underpaid tax of less than £3,000, HMRC will probably seek to collect it automatically from your income by adjusting your tax code. If you earn more than £30,000, HMRC could seek to collect more than £3,000 – but they cannot take more than half of your wages. If you disagree with HMRC’s calculations or you cannot afford to pay HMRC back, you should contact them as soon as possible. You might be able to spread the payments over a longer period.

Win tickets to see The Dire Straits Experience, the acclaimed live show from former Dire Straits touring member Chris White at G Live Friday 22nd June. Bringing back to life, the music of one of the most creative and unique bands in rock music… Over 25 years have passed since Dire Straits disbanded, leaving a catalogue of some of the finest compositions and musical performances that the heyday of rock ever produced. If anything, their reputation has only grown with time. It was against the backdrop of a two-decade break - and an increasing demand to hear one of the most dramatic songbooks in rock history played live again – that former members of Dire Straits, Alan Clark, Chris White and Phil Palmer formed The Straits for a charity show at The Royal Albert Hall in 2011. With the prolific Knopfler enjoying an incredibly successful solo career, Alan Clark called upon the singer-songwriter, Terence Reis, to front the band in his absence. By the time The Straits ended, three and a half years later, the band had played more than 150 shows in 25 countries around the world. However, an invitation to play a series of shows in New Zealand and Australia saw Chris White and Terence Reis collaborating again for The Dire Straits Experience. Joining them is a stellar band of some of the finest professional musicians the UK has to offer. Between

them, they have worked with an enviable list of rock royalty that includes, amongst others, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Sam Brown, Elton John, Joe Cocker, Nik Kershaw, George Michael, Jamiroquai, The Killers, The Waterboys, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Midge Ure, Albert Lee and Tom Jones. Chris White said; “In Terence Reis, I think we may have found the only person on the planet that is able to play and sing like Mark, but maintain his own integrity and identity. Because of his respect for Mark, Terence is able to perform these songs in a very honest way that allows his energy and talent to come through.” Friday 22nd June – Guildford G Live

SHORTCAKES STRAWBERRY & CAMOMILE
These delicately flavoured shortcakes have a complex, subtle spiciness from the infused camomile and are a match made in heaven for sweet British strawberries.
Ingredients - Makes 6 Method 400g pack Waitrose British Strawberries, hulled & halved, or quartered if large 2-3tbsp caster sugar, to taste Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
For the shortcakes 300ml pot essential Waitrose Double Cream 2 camomile teabags 90g unsalted butter, cubed 2 tbsp whole milk 250g plain flour, extra for dusting 2 tsp baking powder 50g caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste or extract
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Mix the strawberries, caster sugar & lemon zest in a small bowl & set aside to soften a little. 2. Warm 125ml cream in a small pan with the teabags until simmering. Remove from the heat, add the butter & infuse for 5mins. Squeeze the teabags & discard. Rewarm the pan to melt the butter, if needed, then stir in the milk. In a large bowl, sift the flour & baking powder, then mix in the infused cream with 50g caster sugar & a pinch of salt, bringing together to make a rough dough. 3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 2cm thickness. Cut out 6 biscuits with a 6cm round cutter, rerolling the dough as needed. Place on a lined baking tray & chill for 15mins. 4. Brush the tops with a little cream & bake for 12-15mins, until light golden. Place on a wire rack to cool, then carefully split in half horizontally. Whip the remaining cream with 1 tbsp sugar & vanilla to soft peaks. Spoon onto half the shortcakes, add the strawberries, then balance the remaining shortcakes on top.
Cook’s Tip The shortcakes can be frozen for up to 1 month. Thaw thoroughly before filling & serving.

GARDENING AUNTIE PLANTY
WATER WATER EVERYWHERE
The recent wet weather has brought most gardeners to the point of despair. However, there are some positive things that you can do now to ensure your plants have a healthy and happy 2018. The first step is to understand the problem. When soil is waterlogged, plants literally drown. Water fills all the air spaces between the soil particles and this prevents oxygen from reaching the roots. In turn, this causes the soil to stagnate and prevents root growth. Your plants may look like they need water because their ‘I am drowning’ symptoms include yellowing leaves that wither and drop off. Or the whole plant may wilt as well. If it’s been raining for days on end, you can bet your bottom dollar that your soil will be waterlogged - it’ll look soaking wet with puddles on it. And if you lift some of the worst affected plants, you’ll find that the roots are well on their way to being black, soft and soggy, and the soil smells of rotten eggs - not nice! It’s absolutely essential not to walk on soil in this condition unless you can absolutely help it, as you’ll squeeze out all the air-holes and you’ll turn the area into a mud bath, thus making the lack of drainage even worse. If you do need to get access to a shed or washing line, then I suggest you take the precaution of laying down some planks to spread your weight. You can improve a soggy lawn by spiking it, using a garden fork, but wait until all surface water has subsided.
26 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
Push the fork as far down the tines as you can and then gently rock the implement back and forwards to enlarge the holes. If you can, brush some horticultural grit or lime-free sand into the holes to improve drainage. The sand or grit will help to hold the whole open, so allowing water to drain more efficiently. Plants, including the lawn, that have struggled through this wet and windy weather will need feeding well in the growing season.. There are many plant fertilisers on offer in good garden centres, but do make sure you choose the correct one for the job in hand. This last piece of advice is going to sound like a contradiction. Plants that have been subjected to a prolonged period of water-logging will need careful watering during dry spell, as they will be more prone to drought less. If the winter really has turned your garden into a swimming pool, then perhaps it is time to think about installing a soakaway or other drainage system. This need not be a complicated process and a good builder will be able to help you. FLOWER SHOW RHS HAMPTON COURT PALACE
The Lifestyle Gardens In this year marking the centenary of votes for women, the RHS is celebrating women in the industry. Four Lifestyle Gardens, each geared towards a different hobby or way of life & designed by up and coming female designers, will provide plenty of ideas for visitors to grow a garden they love. ‘The Health and Wellbeing Garden’, designed by Alexandra Noble, encourages visitors to move along a continuous path that loops around with no start or end point to inspire a sense of being in the moment. All plants selected have medicinal, edible or fragrant properties to heighten the senses. Creating a space ideal for socialising, Anca Panait has designed ‘The Entertaining Garden’. Inspired by the popular spirit, gin, the garden will see a range of traditional and more unusual botanicals alongside a bespoke outdoor bar for entertaining on a long summer’s evening. ‘The Style and Design Garden’ by Ula Maria combines style & design, creating a contemporary interpretation of an orchard in an urban setting, inspired by an antiquarian’s eccentric lifestyle, world travels & passion for antiques. Lilly Gomm’s garden will be fun, functional and familyfriendly. ‘The Family Garden’ is a space to live life, for adults to unwind and children to explore. The design will be relaxed & will immerse visitors in nature, with much of the planting chosen to support & attract
wildlife while providing a space to learn more about the environment. Show Gardens Steve Dimmock and Paula Holland present ‘The RNIB Community Garden’, a sensory experience to celebrate RNIB’s 150 years & inspired by Dimmock’s own temporary sight loss. A safe & accessible space, it creates a sense of unity rather than the isolation often associated with sight loss. ‘The Children with Cancer UK in collaboration with Mr. Men / Little Miss Ltd’ have joined forces to showcase the charity’s work over the past 30 years. Designer Emma Reed sets the garden within the home of the Mr. Men characters to highlight the resilience and emotional experiences of families living with cancer. Other highlights include ‘The South West Water Green Garden’ by newcomer Tom Simpson which showcases the sustainable management of rainwater, and Rhiannon Williams returns with ‘The Landform Garden Bar’ which embraces a modern alfresco lifestyle. The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will run from 2 – 8 July with a Preview Evening held on Monday 2 July. For more info or to buy tickets, visit: www.rhs. org.uk/hamptoncourt We are delighted to announce the winners from last month’s RHS completion, each of whom win a pair of tickets to go to this year’s RHS Hampton Court Flower Show. JENSEN DAVID
AND HIS SUPPORT FOR
PARKINSON’S UK
David Jensen and his support for Parkinson’s UK In January, David Jensen revealed that he had Parkinson’s and became a VIP Supporter for the charity Parkinson’s UK. Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological condition, for which there currently is no cure, and symptoms include tremor, slowness of movement and rigidity. At the time of his announcement, David said that he had been living secretly with the condition for five years. He spoke about how he was nervous about being open about his condition previously as he feared that people ‘might think less of him’. But David was encouraged to ‘come out’ by other high-profile celebrities, including Billy Connolly and Sky Sports presenter Dave Clark, who have been open about their own struggles with Parkinson’s. More about Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s UK Parkinson’s affects 145,000 people in the UK, around one in 350 of the population. People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine because some of the nerve cells that make it have died. It is not yet known exactly why people get Parkinson’s, but researchers think it’s a combination of genetic and environmental factors that cause the dopamine-producing nerve cells to die. Parkinson’s UK estimates that there are more than 40 symptoms of Parkinson’s. These range from physical symptoms such as tremor and muscle stiffness, to depression, anxiety, hallucinations, memory problems and dementia. But Parkinson’s affects everyone differently. Parkinson’s more often affects people over the age of 65, but can affect anyone at any time. No current medication is able to slow down or stop the spread of the condition, leaving those affected with severely limited treatment options. In 1969, the charity Parkinson’s UK was founded in a one-room office in Putney by a woman called Mali Jenkins. Mali’s sister, Sarah, had been living with Parkinson’s for some time.
28 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
Since then, it has created comprehensive information and services for everyone affected by Parkinson’s, including a helpline and local advisors across the UK, plus it has funded and championed the Parkinson’s specialist nurse service, which is now working in the majority of UK regions and providing tailored advice and support. The charity has invested more than £80m in groundbreaking research – it has discovered key genes involved in the condition, opened the largest tissue bank dedicated to Parkinson’s science in Europe and funded the world’s biggest in-depth study of people with the condition. Get involved Parkinson’s UK is completely dependent on donations, and with summer on the horizon, it is calling on people to get ready to welcome the sun and bring the fun, by hosting a Garden Gathering to raise funds so that it can continue its vital work. Garden Gathering is a feel-good fundraiser that encourages people to host events in their gardens or favourite outdoor spaces for family and friends this summer. REVIEW MINI CONVERTIBLE BY TED MACAULEY
The absolutely marvellous Mini passes a celebratory milestone this year with the 25th anniversary of the convertible, first marketed in 1993, and its iconic presence has hit a ground-breaking record as the best-selling of all convertibles in the UK. At its UK launch as the Cabriolet in 1991, with its roof removed as a trial, it was an instant hit, with all 75 new-look cars selling in a flash, making it one of the rarest Minis ever sold. The interior was luxuriously finished with a leather steering wheel and colour coded seats. It came in two colours, Caribbean Blue with a grey hood and Nightfire Red with matching hood and brand new 12-inch diameter Revolution wheels. Across the years, the Mini has been reshaped, refitted and renewed, as its fanbase reached enormous proportions and sales soared, and now, playing the game of exclusivity again, the company celebrates 25 years of the convertible’s presence with a limited edition. And it is a stunner…. Welcome to the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Mini Convertible…just 300 of them. Not cheap at £32,995, but unique, and guaranteed to be a hot seller to those of us who enjoy extra-special treats on wheels. So what do you get for your hard-earned? The drop-top is based on the Cooper S Convertible and will be in its most luxurious and unique form, with lounge leather upholstery, white mirror caps and 18-inch Mini Vanity alloy wheels in twotone as standard. They will all be painted an eye-catching Starlight Blue with contrasting white bonnet stripes and a woven fabric roof with a Union Jack pattern. A number plaque will be added to signify its anniversary status.
30 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
So there… The newcomer’s outward appearance may be vastly different from the Cooper S, but there are no changes to its heartbeat, an engine designed to thrill. The 2.0-litre unit remains capable of 189 bhp with 207lbs of torque. It’s a real breathtaker. Foot hard down, and you will zoom from zero to 62mph in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 143mph. Just to complete the specification, it also enjoys the benefit of a superb sat-nav package and a hi-fi system that is a joy. And, hood up or down, this extra-special showcase model looks just great. Okay, there has to be some notso-good and not-too-welcome news, doesn’t there? It is the comparative cost to its entry level Cooper sibling. It is an eye-watering £9165 prici, all due to the additional standard features worked into the Anniversary variant. The success of the Mini’s parent company, BMW - they also produce the Rolls Royce - stamps it as the world’s leading premium manufacturer of cars and motorbikes. It is totally global, with 31 production and assembly facilities in 14 countries and its sales network spreads to more than 140 nations, with a workforce 125,000 worldwide. They are all figures that add up to the surefire success of their painstaking efforts to ensure their products are as finely produced as can be. And that is why they managed to profit to the tune of nearly €10billion on revenues amounting to 95 billion… and it will not stop there if the unique new Mini Convertible is anything to judge by... Specification: Engine 2.0 litre. 192 B HGP. MPG 42 (city) and 59 (Highway) Max speed 143mph. O-62mph 7.2 seconds. Price £32,250.

A DEGREE
OF CHANGE I don’t know about you, but there are times in my life when it feels as though nothing’s changing. I work, I eat, I play, I meditate, I sleep. And then the next day, it’s the same. The nature of my work may vary. The way I play might change. But in some ways, one day looks just the same as the next, as though my life is standing still. Meanwhile, the earth spins around its own axis every day while revolving around the sun every year. Which means that a year later, we’re back where we started. No wonder I thought my life was standing still! But it’s not. Every 24 hours, as the earth rotates 360 degrees, we travel 15,362 miles (at our latitude) through space, and by the end of the year we’ve covered 584 million miles around the sun. We’ve all come a long way! And it’s when I look back on my year that I can see the changes: Oh look there, that happened! Or: I can’t believe I really did that! Or: I challenged myself at that point, and there, three months later, I can see the result. Or: I spend more time smiling than I used to, even when I’m on my own. We don’t have to make huge changes in one go to be able to notice a difference over time. Just as the earth rotates one degree at a time and hey presto, 24 hours later it’s given us a day and a night, so can we - if we change even a little, consistently – create a complete revolution in our lives. Sometimes our changes are as big, bright and obvious as the sun in the sky. Another job. A new partner. A different country. But much of the time, they may be outwardly imperceptible, like the sliver of a new moon, offering a glimmer of hope for the future. We all know how powerful the moon is, shifting the
oceans’ tides and our moods regardless of how much or little of it we see. And so can we create tiny shifts in perspective that make the world seem a sunnier place. We can cultivate different ways of looking at the world, at relationships, at our needs and our gifts, that can make a world of difference in how we live our lives, and in the impact we have on those around us. As different as night and day. It all starts with small steps. With a small change in direction. And with the intention to keep going no matter what. What are you going to do today? Tomorrow? Consistently? The earth will have travelled 360 degrees and 584 million miles around the sun by this time next year. Where will you be then?
