FromEDITOR the Welcome to Look Local in March! British Summer Time is just around the corner, which means the clocks are on the verge of springing forward. We can expect longer, brighter evenings and hopefully we can save some money on the heating bills, as well as see a whole variety of spring bulbs peeping through the soil. However, in exchange for less darkness, we are handed one less hour in bed on a Saturday night. British Summer Time starts on Sunday March 26 2017 at 1.00am. It also coincides with Mothers’ Day, so a longer day to spoil your mum too!

TRAVEL IN LUXURY - ARRIVE IN STYLE

ASK BRUCE:

PUPPY PADS...

Reader Lucy Miles is collecting her new puppy soon and asks: are puppy pads a good idea for house training puppies? In short, yes, they are a useful training tool, but they shouldn’t be used too much or for too long. Puppy pads are specially scented pads designed to encourage dogs to relieve themselves on the pad rather than the floor, and being highly absorbent, they keep mess and odours to a minimum. Good news in the first days of a puppy’s life in its new home! However, while it’s important to teach your puppy to use the pad in the house, it’s more important and natural that it learns to go to the loo outside. This should always be your long-term aim. Start by using the pads in the house but near the door, and reward your puppy when it uses it. Once it understands what’s required, as soon as you see it heading for the pad or circling to go to the toilet the next time, take the pup outside immediately. Once it’s done its business outside, praise and reward hugely. Make it seem like this is the best thing ever and the message will soon get through! Continue the process until your puppy is heading for the door with no need for the pad. Remember to stay vigilant for the signs so that no opportunity is missed and accidents don’t occur. Within weeks, you should have a fully house-trained puppy and no need for puppy pads. Like nappies, their job is now done and it’s time to move on. Crowdfunder Campaign

TEAM

PARACHEER

Local lady Wendy Pinney has been selected to be part of Team England ParaCheer, representing England at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando this April. 14 Looklocal Magazine - March 2017

S

he is currently fundraising for a new wheelchair and the entry fees for the competition, as everything has to be completely self-funded and the NHS have decided that she is not eligible for a sports chair from them, which is a real pity. All her life, Wendy has danced and taught others to dance. When she went to university, she discovered cheerleading too. She loved the sport instantly and worked hard to start the first competitive university cheerleading team in the UK. They went from strength to strength, winning multiple national titles. She coached her own team, but also travelled the country and the world, guest coaching other teams and training new coaches. Wendy worked with multiple international cheerleading competition & event companies, ranging from behind-the-scenes planning to setting up and running the UK’s first ever university cheerleading competition. She was also an internationally accredited judge. Unfortunately, she has a disability called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy which causes constant pain in her feet and legs, and in 2009, she had to admit that she could no longer stand well enough to continue cheerleading. It must have been truly heartbreaking for her. This is why she is so thrilled to be part of the first ever competitive paracheer division and so proud to be

representing England. What a fantastic achievement. Unfortunately, the NHS does not recognise cheerleading as needing an ‘active user’ wheelchair, and the standard chair they have provided for her is not at all suitable. Therefore, not only does she have to find the money to travel to the World Championships and pay for the competition entry fees (they receive no funding from anyone, everything has to be paid for by the athletes), but she will also have to buy a new wheelchair. Sports chairs generally cost £2500+ for even the most basic model; luckily, Wendy has found a secondhand one that might be suitable, but even that will cost £1500. She works currently at 2 part time jobs, as well as being a mum to her 2 small children. It is proving very hard to raise the money for this active user wheelchair, so maybe we can help her ? Wendy has started a crowdfunder campaign with the hope that she can raise the money for her chair. Details can be found at

http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/wheelsforwendy

Please follow our lead and send Wendy a little donation to help her on her way! We’d love to hear how you get on at the World Championships in Orlando, Wendy. Please keep us posted and good luck with the fundraising too!

Elmbridge Borough Council COMMUNITY SAFETY SURVEY 2017 - HAVE YOUR SAY

Residents, businesses and community groups in Elmbridge are being asked their opinions on community safety in 2017 to influence the priorities in the Partnership Action Plan for the coming year. The Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership has published a new survey to obtain the views of residents and businesses on the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as the actual level of crime being experienced. This is not a statutory survey, but it will support the development of the action plan for the Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership in the coming year (2017/18). Councillor Mary Marshall, Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Community

16 Looklocal Magazine - March 2017

Development at Elmbridge Borough Council, says, ‘The Borough of Elmbridge is a safe place to live, work and visit. We would like to hear your views on community safety matters, as we are always looking to ensure residents feel safe and secure, as well as make improvements. The results of this survey will inform and influence the work that the Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership will undertake in 2017/2018, so please make your views count by returning our survey.’ This survey will run from 7 February to 6 March 2017. A summary of the results will be put on the Elmbridge Borough Council website in April 2017, along with our updated Partnership Action Plan.

any people do not know that Hersham has its own weekly market which has evolved over the last thirty years, initially under the umbrella of the Women’s Institute Market. March Car Review

Skoda Kodiaq

Ted Macauley test drives the Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI, and lets us know what it has to offer....

L

et me start at what is usually off-puttingly the postscript in the last line or thereabouts in a new car review : £28,245. That is far from what you would expect to fork out for a big shot, four-wheel drive humdinger of a bargain buy. But yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. That is the asking price for the Skoda Kodiaq, the company’s first seven-seater, a long-awaited and welcome challenger to the pricier rivals in the fast-accelerating SUV market. The Skoda, once a make to be avoided at all costs, a cheapskate, sniggeredat brand you would be reluctant to admit you owned, has, under Volkswagen’s take-over steerage, zoomed in as a desirable front runner and has underpinned its reputation and rescued the Skoda name even further with the Kodiaq. So much so that it clinched a Car of the Year accolade as the Best Large

SUV in What Car? And to my mind, utterly and thoroughly deservedly. The Kodiaq – named after the largest known big bear – was also blessed with the award of ‘Best Family Car in the World’ in Top Gear magazine, and I would bet the honours won’t stop there. I am told the design aces and engineering geniuses took notice of customer needs and desires, got their heads together and brainwaved the newcomer as the already-in-place Yeti’s bigger, sturdier, posher, big brother. And now the worries must be piling up on the opposition 4x4 likes of Kia, Mazda, Ford and Land Rover, with their costlier products that do not really out-equip or out-perform this worthy Skoda frontrunner. All the required and desired information goodies, dials and buttons are neatly and handily stacked in unfussy style, and it is a comfort-zone on the move, with an off-road agility, excellent adaptive suspension system and capability that

cope without discomforting its seven occupants in its classy cabin. This is a real range-topper, and the cheaper Kodiaqs make even more sense as a treat to your bank balance. Okay, I know that the third row of seats may not be as accommodating as some of the rivals, but they are still plenty adequate for the teens or toddlers joining Mum, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma for seaside outings. The ongoing advance of the Skoda brand under VW’s expertise is a complete reversal of its historic nothank-you reputation, and last year, more than 1.13million of its cars were eagerly bought in 102 countries. When the Kodiaq word gets around off the back of its excellence, I guarantee that those numbers will take an upturn, leaving the company’s money men as chuffed as the customers who will be revelling in their value-for-money transport. Specification: my choice: 2.0 TDI 150 4x4. MPG 52.3. Top speed 130mph 0-60 in 9 secs. Price £28.245.

For those listeners who’ve been curious about my current on-air adventures, I’m now plying my trade with a fresh new radio station called My Music Radio, which is part of the Eagle family of radio stations. My pal Pat Sharp and I began our individual weekend shows when My Music Radio first went into action in November last year. The radio station specialises in the 70s (and more) and has already become one of the brightest and most energetic shows on the radio. I feel like a born-again broadcaster, with a smart bunch of radio lovers and ‘desk jockeys’ supporting our endeavours. If you haven’t yet discovered our terrific My Music Radio Live Hour, join us each weekday evening at 8, when we play 60 minutes of classic live performances from a different artist or band, such as Queen, David Bowie, Abba, Diana Ross and many more. Don’t miss it. Other specialist shows include the My Music Radio Saturday Night Party and our Jazz, Big Band and Swing show. If you miss any of our programmes or just simply want to listen again, you can do so by visiting the On Demand section of our free mobile app or by visiting mymusicradio.co.uk You’ll find me and my new show on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10, and Pat takes over from me on both days from 2pm. I look forward to your company soon.

ACS Cobham International School opens new treehouse for Lower School students

T

his week, ACS Cobham delighted students and staff by unveiling a newly built trio of treehouses in the Lower School playground. Designed and built by Highlife Tree House company, the new addition to the school has been developed to promote imaginative outdoor learning and play. The three structures, connected by rope bridges, are all different in their functions and character. While the first treehouse provides a unique outdoor classroom space, the second and third are imaginative, playful structures in the form of a fairy house and a castle, complete with slides and cargo nets. ‘We know that children need to be encouraged and nurtured

to engage with nature in meaningful ways and the addition of these treehouses will foster creative and cooperative student play, allow some risk-taking, and provide teachers with a unique outdoor classroom space,’ said Lacy Chapman, Lower School Principal at ACS Cobham. The treehouse design was based on a consultation with teachers and students, and a review of research about creative play. The houses were unveiled this week at an opening ceremony, attended by the Lower School students and staff. Lacy added: ‘We are really excited to be able to add this amazing and much-anticipated feature to our playground!’ Find out about ACS Cobham at www.acs-schools.com

Gardening with Auntie Planty

The world of plants I was given a fascinating book to take on holiday – all about plants and how, until the early 1700s, English gardens were really rather colourless, especially during winter. It’s called The Brother Gardeners and it’s an absorbing tale that charts the birth of our obsession with plants and gardening.

I

suspect that most of us take for granted the riot of colourful plants on offer in garden centres today, and how we can now find plants to perform brilliantly in those dark days of winter. And I think we also take for granted the simple naming system created by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus to identify each and every member of the plant kingdom. His binomial botanical Latin system could be understood by botanists and gardeners the world over. However, it was his first proclamation that plants didn’t just multiply by the will of some higher being, but that – shock horror – sex was the underlying driving force. It was this assertion that gave him his first bit of bad press in the plant world. Purists just could

not believe that their beloved garden subjects would stoop to such bodiceripping shenanigans in the borders, and in broad daylight! While I leave you with those thoughts, I’d like to pass on to the afore-mentioned clever two-word plant-naming formula that Linnaeus went on to introduce to the world. He recommended Latin, as it was a dead language and unlikely to evolve over time. The first part of the name identified the genus, the second the species, as with our surname and first name. This may seem kindergarten stuff, but what went before this moment in time was a complete mess. Folk named their plants just as they found them and that meant including quite a description of a plant’s size

and shape. Here I will give you the unwieldy pre-Linnaeus example of the white pine: Pinus Americana quinis ex uno folliculo setis longus tenuibus triquetris ad unum angulum per totam longitudinem minutissimis crenis asperatis In the binomial system, this was reduced to Pinus strobus. Which would you prefer? However, Linnaeus didn’t have an easy ride in getting the botanists of the day to accept this new system. He suffered abuse from all directions, especially over the plant-sex bit. His rationale was not only practical but also philosophical: he believed that, without permanent names, there would be no permanent knowledge. That was back in the 1730s, and Linnaeus’ system still holds good today, in spite of its early bumpy ride. By the way, The Brother Gardeners is a cracking read, but I’ll have to have another holiday so that I can finish it.

Inspiration!

Don’t panic, don’t panic.. I can feel my breaths becoming shallower, faster, my chest growing tighter. I have so much to do. Each time I start to do something, I notice something else that I think I ought to do first. I wish I had more time. I’m never going to get it all done. I can feel the pressure inside me mounting. So I do the only thing I can do. I stop. And breathe.

I

know, I know, I was already breathing. But it didn’t feel like it. It was more like air seeping into my lungs. It seems a waste of precious time to slow down and just become aware of my breath. But I do it anyway.

front part of our brain that acts as the brain’s CEO time to come online. The PFC can reason, see the bigger picture and delay gratification. Furthermore, when we carry out a task, we engage the PFC – so now it’s in charge. And it can start to make better decisions.

It’s true that Mary Poppins doesn’t immediately appear out of nowhere and save me with a whirlwind of activity, but I do feel better. I become aware that not everything needs to be done right now, this very minute, even though I’d like it to be. I breathe more slowly. I can see that I’m imposing some of my own deadlines through impatience or worry, and that’s actually causing a bottleneck, a traffic jam in my consciousness. I slow down some more.

Back in charge I go for an easy win. I choose one thing that I can do right now that’s quick and self-contained. That feels good! I take a deep breath and choose another small task. I can do this. The breaths are coming more easily now. And so are my actions.

Neuroscience made very simple Why does this work? When we feel under stress, the limbic system – the quickest part of our brain that’s evolved over thousands of years – jumps in and takes charge to save us from danger (which, thousands of years ago, would have been more about a predator lurking in the long grass than a long to-do list!). It floods our body with adrenaline and cortisol to kick-start the action. Back then in the jungle, we’d have run for our life or stopped to fight, using up the stress hormones. But nowadays, when we get stressed, we usually sit around and get even more stressed, and those chemicals have nowhere to go. When we consciously stop and breathe or count to ten, we start to flush out the stress chemicals and give our prefrontal cortex (PFC) - the more evolved, but slower,

Keep breathing!
