Welcome to Look Local in March! Isn’t this a great time of year? As daffodils bloom and the days are gradually becoming a little longer again, spring is certainly in the air. Mothers’ Day is just around the corner and Easter is at the end of the month, so maybe some family time for many of us too? It’s been a busy time for Look Local, and as February was a short month, a quick turn around was required, so we’ve been working our socks off to bring you this month’s magazine. Luckily, there is plenty going on locally to fill our pages, and we are delighted to bring you news from many local groups and organisations. We include updates about a special ‘Mayor’s Charity Concert’ and also, some interesting events at Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre this month. We also hear from a great local charity called ‘Weysight’ who provide communication skills classes to blind and visually impaired people locally. If you know of anyone who may benefit from this service, please see their feature within this issue. Our February front cover generated some interest, a kissing couple statue for a Valentine’s theme. For anyone who is interested, this statue is located in Sarasota, Florida, but I also had a call from a gentleman in Weybridge who said he had seen a version of the same at an Italian port when he was on a cruise, so maybe there are several of them. It is based on a famous photograph taken in Times Square by a gentleman called Alfred Eisenstaedt in 1945, minutes after news broke of Japan’s surrender to the US. His iconic black and white photograph then appeared on the front cover of LIFE magazine. It seems to be a ‘Marmite’ image... you either love it or hate it. The lady in the white dress came forward a while after the photo was widely publicised, but the identity of the sailor has always been a little ambiguous: several sailors claimed it was them, but the true identity has never been confirmed. Anyway, we simply liked the the statue and thought it provided a striking front cover for the month of love. This month’s cover is a less historic image, but pretty all the same, I hope you agree. Wishing you a great month, until next time,
Ros

ASK BRUCE
EASTER EGG ADVICE
Look Local reader Emma asks why mustn’t dogs eat Easter eggs and what should you do if they do? Human chocolate is poisonous to dogs. It contains theobromine which is a chemical that is toxic to them. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous, as it contains higher levels of theobromine than milk chocolate. However, both should be avoided. Prevention, as always, is better than cure. But if you do find your dog has helped themself, you must take immediate action. Digesting the chocolate can cause them to fit and can lead to heart issues. Call your vet immediately to get advice if your dog does eat chocolate. Better still, stop them from stealing your Easter eggs by buying them their own. There are lots of pet websites offering doggy Easter eggs which are made with carob, a dog-friendly alternative to chocolate. And some are even peanut butter and yoghurt flavoured, so the chances are they will prefer them to yours! Whatever you get up to this Easter, enjoy the break and some well-earned time with your four-legged friends. Q. A.
The IR35 rules are designed to prevent you inserting a personal service company between your client and you. Gross payments are made to your company, which you then withdraw from the company as dividends, thus saving income tax and National Insurance. If it wasn’t for the existence of the PSC, you would be an employee of the clients. The rules essentially ensure income from your client is taxed as salary, rather than dividends. Income from IR35 engagements that exceed actual salary paid out and various other deductions is deemed to be a salary received on 5th April. One of the most important deductions you can take out of the deemed salary is an automatic 5% deduction. This 5% deduction is fixed and designed to compensate you for running your company. PAYE and NIC will be due on this deemed salary. You may also be able to offset the tax paid on any deemed salary payments to avoid being taxed twice. In summary, it may make sense to extract money with a mix of dividends and salary because the 5% deduction from the notional deemed salary will be available. If all remuneration is taken as salary, the 5% allowance won’t be available. New business registration with HMRC I have just started my own business. When do I need to register with HM Revenue & Customs? Firstly, you need to work out which tax year your start date falls into. The tax year runs from 6th April to 5th April, so your start date falls into the tax year ended 5th April 2018. You must therefore register by the following 5th October, i.e. 5th October 2018. As you are registering as self-employed, the form you need to complete is HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) form CWF1 or you can register with HMRC online at www.hmrc.gov.uk. Although you have some time before you need to register, avoid leaving it too long as you may face penalties for late registration. Please note, this is merely with regards to self-assessment, and does not include VAT or employer matters, for example.

Slow cooked pig’s cheeks WITH PEA TOPS AND SEARED SCALLOPS
Rich and tender pig’s cheeks combine perfectly with sweet, delectable scallops in this easily prepared dish.
Ingredients 6 pig’s cheeks, about 400g, or alternatively try 500g essential Waitrose Pork Belly Joint (see below) Seasoned flour 1 tbsp olive oil 75ml dark soy sauce 100g clear honey 300ml Cooks’ Ingredients Chicken Stock 4-5 star anise 20ml Cooks’ Ingredients Chinese Rice Vinegar 4 Canadian roeless scallops 10g butter 25g Waitrose pea tops
Method
Preheat the oven to 150ºC, Gas Mark 2. Coat the pig’s cheeks in seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish on the hob, add the pig’s cheeks and cook for for 1–2 minutes until browned. Add the soy sauce, honey, stock, star anise and rice vinegar. Cover and bake in the oven for about 3 hours until the pork is tender and falling apart. Just before the pork is done, sear the 4 scallops in the butter in a small frying pan for 2–3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. To serve, place the pig’s cheeks together in the centre of 2 plates, top with a handful of pea tops and 2 scallops, then lightly drizzle with some of the cooking liquid.
Variation
Instead of pig’s cheeks, this dish works just as well with an essential Waitrose Pork Belly Joint (about 500g). Place the joint, skin side up, into an ovenproof dish. Drizzle with oil, season and roast in a preheated oven (200 degrees centigrade, gas mark 7) for 20–30 minutes, until the skin is crispy. Reduce the heat to 150 degrees centigrade, gas mark 2. Add the soy sauce, honey, stock, star anise and rice vinegar, then cover and bake for 3 hours, until the pork is meltingly tender.
Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 180 mins Serves: 2 Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes

Auntie Planty Gardening MARCH MAIL BAG
Q1: Now that the weather appears to have begun to be more spring-like, when should I start cutting my lawn? A1: If you haven’t started mowing yet, now’s the time to start. Adjust the cutting height of your mower for this first cut, all it needs is a light tipping. Q2: Last year, my roses were plagued with black spot – how can I protect them this year? A2: Good garden hygiene plays a large part in keeping blackspot under control, so gather up the fallen leaves around the base of the plant. During the season, it’s important to pick off the worst affected leaves and dispose of them very carefully. Place them in a plastic bag and tie the top tightly. Leave the bag in the hot sun for a few days and then put them into the dustbin or burn them. This should kill off the active organisms to prevent further infection. Under no circumstances put leaves affected by blackspot into your compost heap. Begin a regular spraying programme with a product such as RoseClear Ultra ready to use. Use the spray as insurance against attack, rather than as first aid when the problem has arisen.
you will then not use. The second golden rule is do not under any circumstances remove the leaves at this stage. As for poor flowering, the most likely cause is that the bulbs have been starved of water and nutrients over the previous year, making them shrivel up. During droughts, we tend to forget to feed and water the plants that are out of sight at the time.
Q4: I have noticed that the slugs are beginning to slither back into my garden – someone told me to use a garlic wash, where do I buy this? A4: You make it yourself! Crush 2 bulbs of garlic; Steam or boil in 1 litre of water for 3 to 4 minutes until blanched. Strain mixture and make back up to l litre . Leave to cool. When ready to use, mix one tablespoon into 3.8 litres of water. Using a spray bottle, wet leaves in late afternoon (in dry weather). Reapply every two weeks. The mixture will apparently dry on the leaves, making them rather unappealing to slugs and snails! It also appears to work for aphids too.. Valerie Munro is a chartered horticulturist. She offers unique and personal tuition sessions Q3: My daffodils were not brilliant last year, is there explaining the whys anything I can do to improve things this year? and wherefores of good A3: The first golden rule is to remove the fading flower gardening techniques in heads before they have time to look really scruffy and your own garden start to squander vital energy by producing seeds that www.auntieplanty.co.uk

Mazda MX
CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
The first rays of spring sunshine, hopefully heralding a tanning summer, spotlight the desirability of fresh-air jaunts in an open top motor. And here I cite the bliss of being able to do it in a tiny treasure of transport, namely the petite Mazda MX5, a four wheel joy, the car that accounts for half of all its UK sales right across Europe. Despite our changeable weather, the UK is the largest market for convertibles and the heralded Mazda reigns supreme. And here’s a reminder for comparison: the rival Lotus Elise is priced £6,000 more than this eager beaver of Japanese automotive genius and invention. The two-seater is also recognised as the world’s best selling sports car, as revealed in the Guinness World Record books. And that to me is no surprise whatsoever: it is a double-deal benefit, being a fun car in which to revel and a real bargain buy. Inside it is cosy and close-fitting and its performance from its front engine is eager and responsive, with a sharp manual gear change ability that gets the most out of its six speed box. And I must confess the entry level MX5 1.5-litre job, with its short shift perfection, is every bit as delightful a treat to drive as the pricier 2.0-litre rangetopper.A show-off weekend in the Lake District, with its testingly variable winding lanes and roads, climbs and
26 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018
descents, underlined the Mazda’s eagerness to please. Its road-holding and two wheel drive fill you with confidence, and at the same time, urge you to have fun and thrills in complete safety. And with the hood down, despite a typically around-Windermere nippy atmosphere, the cocooned cosiness was complete, with no intrusive draught for either me or a warmth-seeking Trophy Wife to moan about. If needs be, and if you get caught out by shower, you can up the hood on the go in five seconds. Like everything else with this desirable third-generation cabrio, the designers have been painstaking in ensuring its tradition and reputation remain firmly intact. In its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, it emerged as the spiritual successor to the British sports cars of the Fifties and Sixties…the Triumph Spitfire, Austin Healey 100, MGA and Lotus Elan. And it has never looked back, outlasting and overtaking the lot. In America, it is dubbed the ‘Miata’…an old German word for ‘reward’. How true…. Specification: Engine 1.5-litre 131 BHP SE: MPG 47.1, Speed 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Price £18,795. Warranty three years, 60,000 miles.

Coaching with Inspiration
I would never do a thing like that! Someone cuts in front of me in the traffic and I have to slam on the brakes. Couldn’t you wait? I flash my lights self-righteously to let him know he’s an idiot. I would never do a thing like that. Another day. I am in a hurry, nip out of the side road into a stream of traffic. The car behind me is close. Not close enough for there to be an accident – I checked – but close enough that it has to slow down. The driver flashes in annoyance. I send a silent apology. I know. I’m sorry. But you see, I’m in a big hurry ... I have just become the idiot in someone else’s story. Maybe I’ll remember ‘the idiot’ from the first story then and there. Maybe it will come to me later when I can see my own actions more objectively. Sometimes I catch myself halfway through doing something, and I remember, and stop just in time, before becoming an idiot again. The thing is, we see what others do from the outside; we usually only see their external actions and are unaware of their internal motivation. On the other hand, when we do something, we’re usually focused on our internal motivation – the need we’re trying to meet. We’re not thinking about the impact – the external action that other people see. It’s not just the things we do. It can be what we say, the way we say it, the things we don’t do … the list of things we would never do (but still do!) is endless. We would like people to cut us some slack when we act inconsiderately (“I didn’t mean it, I was tired!”) but how often do we give people the benefit of the doubt? Next time you catch yourself judging someone (Why hasn’t she replied to my email? She must be ignoring me)
think back to a time when you were so busy you were way behind on your correspondence. Could she be struggling too? And if we realise we may have put our foot in it, why wait for the other person to get upset or angry? Better to check out how our less-than-desirable action may have been perceived (“I realise that when I said X, you might have taken it to mean Y and got offended. Is that the case?” / “Yes!” / “Oh, I’m so sorry, there’s no way I would have wanted to imply that.”) Distress or disaster avoided. Imagine what the world would be like if we were all more thoughtful, tolerant and considerate! Try it for a week.
