HAPPY BIRTHDAY C HAT T E RB U S

THE COMMUNITY BUS SERVICE CELEBRATES ITS FIRST BIRTHDAY

O

n April 7th, Cobham’s Chatterbus celebrated its first birthday, and everyone involved in its running is delighted by the success of its first 12 months, both the 14,000 passenger journeys and the stories of how focussed transport has made a huge difference to people’s lives. Those without transport because of disability, age or income can now access superstore shopping at Sainsbury’s and Brooklands, as

well as essential services such as the Jobcentre, while some find it is one of the few times in the week they speak to anyone. Indeed, the drivers’ interaction with the passengers is one of Chatterbus’ best features; says one of them, “I had no idea when I took the job that the best thing about it would be the people.” However, even the healthy passenger numbers cannot fully cover the on-going running costs. The first year was fully funded by Elmbridge Borough Council,

CHATTERBUS CHAIRMAN SIR GERALD ACHER, MAYOR OF ELMBRDIGE JAN FULLER AND SURREY COUNTY CONCILLOR MARY LEWIS CELEBRATE THE BUS’S FIRST BIRTHDAY Surrey County Council, Chelsea Football Foundation, Cargill and Anchor, and receipts mean that Chatterbus has reached the hoped-for one-third contribution to next year’s costs far more quickly than expected. A further third will be met by on-going sponsorship and, organisers hope, the final portion by the community, in two ways. The first is a ‘Proud to Support’ scheme for Cobham businesses. Those who contribute will receive a rosette for their window and will be named as a supporter on the Chatterbus website. The hope is that it will be an accessory no Cobham business can be seen without! There is also promotional space available inside the bus. The second is Friends of Chatterbus, a new charity which will organise local fundraising events. Jane

Halliwell, Chairman of Friends explains, “It is always easier to find money to support a new venture than it is to maintain one, and the Friends will be one way in which the wheels of the bus will keep turning. It will be run by volunteers and all the money given to the charity will go to supporting the day-to-day running of the bus.” Friends would love to hear from you if you can help in any way, from occasionally giving a few hours of your time to setting up a standing order. For more information about Friends or Proud to Support, go to Website: www.chatterbus.org.uk, or Email: jane@chatterbus.org.uk. Twitter: @CobChatterbus Facebook: /CobhamChatterbus

ASK BRUCE:

MY DOG IS OBSESSED WITH OUR CAT.

This month, reader Fiona McDonald asks how to stop her one-year-old dog from pestering their cat. This is a common problem, and while each dog, cat and household situation is different, some general dog training rules apply. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we’re big on dog training and have an excellent dog trainer, Andy Weaver, who regularly visits our centres to teach our staff. So we asked Andy for his views. He explained that the best way to deal with any dog training problem is to confront it and train through it, rather than avoid it. Andy suggests you take control of bringing the dog and cat together, rather than allowing them to meet freely. So, have them in the same room with the dog’s bed, keep the dog on the lead and ask her to lie down on her bed, while allowing the cat to roam around. This supervised introduction lets your dog see the cat is just another member of the family and she will become used to the cat being around while under your control. Keep repeating the exercise over time, from five minutes to 10 minutes and so on. Eventually, the novelty of the cat will wear off with your dog and they will happily co-exist – they may even become best buddies! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce? Send your questions to :-

This month, I want to pay tribute to Peter Whitehead and his team who recently organised a very successful Claygate Music Festival. Among the wonderful artists to appear this year at the Village Hall and the Holy Trinity Church were Rick Wakeman, Martin Turner, a founder member of Wishbone Ash, Neil Innes, once of the Bonzo Dog band and an excellent Blues line-up which featured Brooks Williams (an amazing guitarist who hails from American’s Deep South), the Fran McGillivray Band from East London and Tony Devenport who sounds at times like Richie Havens. On his album, he compares with Marvin Gaye The Blues night was organised by Peter, along with Roger McCormick and Felix Riley who both broadcast on our hyperlocal internet radio station, Brooklands Radio (brooklandsradio.co.uk). Brooklands Radio is a not-for-profit radio station which has been broadcasting on the internet for 7 years, reflecting the latest news, travel and events in Surrey. Felix, a former Radio 1 producer, is a comedy writer and Roger was a lawyer in the City for many years and now runs a research foundation, as well as being a part-time university lecturer. Roger has a lifelong love of rock and blues and says he can’t give up his love of the music he grew up with and doesn’t want to try. I really enjoy The Blues Hour, co-hosted by Roger and Felix which airs Friday night at 11pm, as well as Cool Connections which goes out Wednesdays at 7 pm. Both shows are uploaded to Mixcloud which is free and easy to access. Just search under the name of the shows and you should find them. It makes a refreshing change to hear presenters who’ve been given carte blanche to play what they want and can therefore genuinely enthuse over their musical choices. With it’s eclectic mix of music and chat, it’s good to know that Elmbridge is so well covered and that the future of community radio is in safe hands.

Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling water for 15 minutes until tender. Meanwhile, in a large frying pan, heat the oil and cook the onion for 5 minutes until softened. Drain the potatoes and add to the pan with the chorizo and cook for a further 10 minutes until the potatoes start to brown. Add the tomatoes, chilli and paprika and cook for a further 5 minutes until the tomatoes are softened and pulpy. Stir in a squeeze of lemon juice and the chopped parsley and serve with a leafy salad. ike all new ventures, it could have been a dis-Astra area, but Vauxhall’s seventh generation model of the marque looks like a surefire success. And close-fought rivals Ford Focus, VW and Peugeot will feel a blow on their bankings as this punchy fiveseater, lighter but roomier than its predecessors, makes its hit on the hatchback front. I confess I’ve never been a fan of what I regarded as staid and uninspiring efforts by Vauxhall’s stuck-in-the-mud designers, but bless ‘em, they have won me over with this curvy and sculpted nimble newcomer. And I forecast the new-look, revitalised, re-designed and re-engineered challenger to every other hatch on the planet will find a niche among those of us who like looks underpinned by economic values, offering a sensible reason to spend. It’s as if the drawing board users at Vauxhall HQ have listened to the dissatisfied bleats of the likes of you and me and converted them to what will be songs of praise for the new wave of Astra, one the UK’s staple

feeds to a value-hungry mass of wouldbe owners. From a practical standpoint, with five seats and a cabin roomy enough for a six-foot passenger to sit behind a sixfoot driver, the Astra has mastered entry into the comfort zone, generally a rarity among near-budget cars. Ironically, the new threat to the old rivals is slightly smaller on the outside but more spacious inside than its older sibling, and the information and help kit is clear and well-ordered, with an uncomplicated touch-screen. What’s more - and this is a real handy breakthrough - there is a device dubbed OnStar. Let me explain: it is a highbandwidth connection and permanent link to a call centre and tracking process. Dead easy to use, an answer to any SOS. All you do, if needs urgently be, is call the operator and he/she will give you traffic updates, or download, say, an address to your satnav without any need to be poking distractingly at the screen with your fingers. If you’re unlucky enough to suffer a crash, the controller, taking advantage of a powerful antenna and connection

with its wi-fit hotspot, can summon help - and just in case you forget to switch off and don’t want to risk the rain and leave the dinner table, you can lock the whole system from your phone. There is only one body style, but you have the choice of eight engines, five petrol and three diesel. If you want a quickie, then go for the 1.6 turbo, but for my money, the real star of the Astra show is the petrol-drinker 1.4-litre 3 cylinder turbo. Steering, lightweight and ultrasensitive, and sooper-dooper efficient brakes that don’t snatch make for a relaxing experience, whether you are skedaddling around twisty country lanes or in the melee of motorway madness. All in all, and fittingly, in the words of my old Royal Air Force service motto “Per ardua ad astra”... “Through Adversity to the Stars”, the adversity in this instance being a whole range of rivals now really up against it.... Specification: Vauxhall Astra 1.4T. BHP 150. Top speed 134 mph. 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. MPG 51.4.Price £19,595.

COMPETITION Driving abroad, especially for the first time, can be a costly and nightmare situation to the unwary, a confusing experience with the unfamiliar traps of local laws and prohibitions lurking to dig deep into your holiday savings. A familiarising read-up before you venture where you have never previously been makes good sense - and that is why experienced motoring enthusiast Julian Parish’s “Essential Guide to Driving in Europe” is a gem of a paperback to avoid falling into traps that ensnare so many innocents abroad. Just released by Veloce Publishing for just under a tenner, it is an A-to-U guide...Austria to the Ukraine...of just about everything you need to know and plan for your upcoming drive through wherever your journey is set to take you across the Channel. All the key facts on how to stay legal in 50 countries, speed limits, road signs, local regulations and even what to do if you are a car crime victim or involved in a smash-up, are lucidly assembled.

In short, it’s a real treat, so handy and informative and superb value for money. I am giving away one FREE to the winner of our competition,

Using climbing plants in your garden is a wonderful way to exploit a vertical surface. A word to the wise though you must fully understand exactly how a plant hangs on so that you provide it with perfect support.

CLIMBING A

N

Why do plants climb? Climbing plants are the lazy, impatient, opportunistic members of the plant world. The reason they climb is to save themselves investing energy in creating big thick stems, preferring to rely on other plants to provide them with the support they need. Weavers and twiners Winding plants twist their stems around a structure. As I’m the queen of trivia, did you know that the runner bean winds anticlockwise, whereas honeysuckle and hops are happy lacing their way clockwise? Don’t try and change this natural orientation, as the plant will sulk and will probably peg out. All of the winding plants are great for covering some grim feature in your garden, such as a wire fence. A typical twiner is the wisteria. However, the older the plant is, the sturdier the stems become, so if you don’t provide it with a suitable framework to twine around (either horizontal wires or sturdy arch or pergola), it will latch itself around something unsuitable, such as your telephone or television aerial cable and pull them off the wall. Of the two main types, Chinese wisteria will wind anti-clockwise, whereas Japanese wisteria makes its way clockwise. Grappling hooks

Instead of using the plant stem to do all the hard work, other plants will hang on using their own version of a grappling hook. The first is a tendril, which looks like a coiled spring, used by sweet peas and passionflower. The plant has an ability to ‘sense’ that support is close and direct the tendril towards it, to then coil to pull the plant in close. You’ll find the second ‘grappling’ hook method on your clematis. Here it’s the leaf stalk or petiole that does the twisting. In both these examples, you will need to give them something more slender than trellis to attach themselves to - bean netting, chicken wire or other open weave mesh will work well. Stickers The most common plant in this group is ivy, which produces adventitious roots from its stem to allow it to adhere to a wall. Another more decorative sticker is the climbing hydrangea, an extremely useful plant for a north-facing wall. For both, no support is needed – just place close to the wall or fence and the plants will do the rest Valerie McBride Munro is a chartered horticulturist, offering unique and personal gardening know-how sessions in your own garden. The Director Said,‘CUT!’ Silent Witness - what a show! I think it has few peers. But I have a nagging worry as it travels through the years. Livers, lungs and severed spleens are being splashed across our screens More now than they’ve ever been. What more is there to see? Bladders, gall and otherwise: brains and private parts Are snipped and sliced and sloshed around and geared to chill our hearts. I ache for those who’ve lost their nuts and bolts and portions of their guts That undergo a thousand cuts. There can’t be more to see?

POEM

I’ve been a silent witness too. But now I have to speak. I still enjoy the programme but my stomach’s feeling weak. And what happens to those missing bits? Fed to fish? Flung in skips? Or served for breakfast at the Ritz? Dinner? Not for me. ...

Double Standards? Or tunnel vision?

I was assisting on a great relationship coaching course – fascinating content, wonderful group, fabulous leaders. But every now and then, I felt a sense of irritation. Sandra, one of the course leaders, a really lovely American woman, pronounced my name Sonia, to rhyme with sew rather than sonic. I’ve always disliked that pronunciation. For one thing, I don’t identify with it, and for another, it just sounds wrong! I knew hers was the American way of saying the name, but I wasn’t American and this was England. So she was saying it wrong. Right?

I

t was only when I heard myself thinking ‘How ridiculous that she even pronounces her own name wrong’, (she called herself Sandra, to rhyme with sandwich; I pronounced Sandra to rhyme with sarnie), that I stopped in my tracks, astounded at my gall. I had been doing to her exactly what I objected to her doing to me! I was shocked to discover I had double standards. But it didn’t seem that way from inside my head. From inside my head, it seemed clear that both names should be pronounced ‘correctly’, ie my way. And it took that jolt for me to see how ridiculous I was being. For me, using the British English pronunciation was natural and right. It failed, however, to take account of the reality of the situation outside my head. And as soon as I noticed that, I felt silly and humbled and contrite and....human. It’s human to think of things from inside our heads, through our own perceptions, perspectives and prejudices. And it’s also human, sadly, not to be aware that that’s what we’re doing and that it’s not the only way of looking at things. Have you ever been so entrenched in your thinking? Reality checks It’s good to have a reality check when we find ourselves reacting to something. Get curious and ask yourself: What’s causing the irritation? Is it really true? How else could I look at it? How does the other person see it? Why should the way I see it be more ‘true’ or ‘right’

Up for Grabs -

than the way the other person sees it? If I were in the other person’s shoes, might I see it their way too? Why am I reacting like this? Is it all to do with this one event, or am I being triggered by something unrelated to this situation that happened in the past? There can often be wonderful learning from such investigations, greater self-awareness and deeper relationships. Like the grain of sand that irritates the mantle of the oyster, there might be a pearl waiting to be discovered.

Find It!
