Welcome to our 12th Birthday Celebration issue! How did that happen?! It seems like only yesterday I had this hair-brained idea of starting a local magazine! As it’s our birthday, I decided to buy Look Local a present. It comes in the form of another local magazine! We’re delighted to add to our collection the ever-popular Ashtead & Leatherhead Local. It’s a great publication and a lovely area to add to our circulation. If you’d like to advertise your business in that direction, please give us a call, we’ll be happy to help. We have lots of interesting news and events for you to read about in this month’s issue, including a little feature by one of my sons who has been working in Australia for the past two years; accompanied by his lovely girlfriend Lucy, he’s now travelling home via many different locations around the globe. A few weeks ago, they were in Borneo and went to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Reserve, which we’ve featured before in Look Local, as Orangutan Appeal UK, which supports Sepilok, is based nearby in Surrey. I hope you enjoy Elliot’s account of their visit. I am so jealous, it’s certainly a place I’d love to go! Although I didn’t get to Borneo, I still enjoyed a wonderful treat when I visited the very lovely Leah Durrant Hair Salon & Beauty Re:Treat in nearby Chertsey, surprisingly close and well worth a visit. Read about my fabulous pamper morning and see details of an exclusive Look Local competition, courtesy of Leah Durrant. Of course, it’s the season for Christmas Fairs and shopping evenings, charity balls and all sorts, so do take a look at the notices and What’s On pages. Hopefully, there’ll be something there that you’ll fancy attending too. That’s it for now, lots to do here to welcome in our new addition, so I’ll sign off. Until next time, take care,
Ros

ASK BRUCE SECOND CHANCE
Look Local reader, Melissa, is planning to take on a rescue dog as a family pet, and asks where is the best place to start and should she consider a dog from overseas? Giving a rescue dog a second chance is a wonderful gesture and the rewards far outweigh any initial concerns. We have several rescue dogs at day care and they can make super pets. Patience is needed, as they may require extra support, love and time, particularly if they have had a difficult past. Interestingly, overseas rescue dogs are often very well socialised with other dogs because they have been used to being around them on the street or in groups at rescue homes. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we are huge supporters of the Dogs Trust charity. They rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs, and have centres all around the UK that you can visit to find your forever friend. The benefit of taking on a dog from them is that they know all the dogs in their care very well and will ensure you get the right match for your lifestyle. For example, if you have young children or other pets, they will pick a dog that will get along with both. I suggest you check out their website and pop along to your nearest centre for a chat. They’ll be delighted to see you, as will their many residents! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Weybridge.

Ember Players PRESENTS
Ladies in Lavender
Thames Ditton resident Elaine Sesemann of Ember Lane is directing The Ember Players` upcoming production of “Ladies in Lavender”, based on the film written and directed by Charles Dance and starring Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Set in a small Cornish coastal villagein the mid 1930s, it tells of two ageing spinster sisters, Ursula and Janet Widdington, whose lives are turned upside down when they discover Andrea, a talented young Polish violinist, washed ashore on the beach and close to death. As the women nurse him back to health, Ursula develops feelings for Andrea which quickly turn to love, despite Janet`s attempts to protect her from the pain of loss, having sacrificed her own true love to the savagery of the First World War. “It`s a story of unrequited love,” says Elaine. “Tender and poignant – but never bleak. The women find themselves in a predicament that highlights the closeness of their relationship, often bickering like a couple of over-age schoolgirls. It`s very touching, but makes you smile at the same time.” Elaine Sesemann has lived in Thames Ditton for 24 years and her children attended St.Paul`s Catholic School for 13 of those. She is a regular worshipper at Our Lady of

Lourdes on the Hampton Court Way and recently retired as bursar at Cranmere Primary School, where she is now Clerk of Governors. Another little string to her bow (or perhaps I should say, knot in her trainers) is running a Thames Ditton walking group that meets for a new adventure on the first Wednesday of every month. “If anyone`s feeling intrepid and wants to make new friends while gently exploring the beautiful environment we`re fortunate to enjoy, you are more than welcome to drop me an email at elaine@sesemann.co.uk” Her love of the theatre was partly inspired by a next door neighbour, the late Elizabeth Livesey, who was a founder member of The Ember Players and also chair of the Guild of Drama Adjudicators. “I worked in every one of the group`s departments, from props to front of house, before I plucked up courage to perform,” she says. “And now here I am, directing a major production.” Tickets for Ladies in Lavender at £13 are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/emberplayers or by ringing 07752 655 087. Putting Weybridge ON THE MAP
(L-R) Cllr Donaldson; Paul Povey, Chairman, Weybridge Town Business Group; Richard Kempton, South Western Railway; Cllr Peter Harman and Holly Carter.
A new Weybridge map has been unveiled at Weybridge train station to encourage visitors to explore the town and surrounding areas. Designed by Holly Carter, an art student at Brooklands College, and produced in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council, South Western Railway and the Weybridge Town Business Group, the map is seen as the beginning of work to enhance the aesthetics of Weybridge train station. Holly Carter is thrilled to be part of this project; “I wanted to create a fun and appealing map of Weybridge station in relation to the town centre and it is really exciting to see my design on show for everyone to see.” Cllr Peter Harman, Ward Councillor for Weybridge and St George’s Hill, has been instrumental in the creation of the project:
16 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
“Improving the look and feel of Weybridge station is important to me. It is such a busy station, and essential for so many residents, that I wanted it to feel part of the community. Holly’s great map design shows visitors the layout of Weybridge in a fun and informative way. “I would like this to be the first in a series of projects to improve the appearance of Weybridge station, such as showcasing artwork from local artists and students and floral displays around the station.” Richard Kempton from South Western Railway is delighted to be a partner in this community project: “This is great example of community initiative and spirt and I am delighted to be part of it. As the new rail network provider, South Western Railways wants to play its part in the Elmbridge community and we look forward to working closely with the council and local colleges and businesses.”

Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes
Ingredients 4 Waitrose Lean & Boneless Free Range Chicken Breast Fillets, cut into 4cm pieces 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp hot smoked paprika 1 lemon, very thinly sliced 200g couscous Grated zest and juice of 1 orange 210g pack Waitrose Pomegranate Seeds 25g pack fresh flat leaf parsley (or mint or 28g pack fresh coriander), roughly chopped Rocket salad and natural yogurt, to serve
Method 1. Place the chicken pieces & 1 tbsp olive oil in a large bowl, toss gently then sprinkle over the thyme, oregano, cumin & paprika & mix until evenly coated. If time allows, leave to marinate for up to 1 hr. 2. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the marinated chicken & the lemon slices alternately onto 8 skewers (see cook’s tip). Cook under the grill for 12-15mins, turning occasionally, until the chicken is nicely browned & cooked through with no pink meat. 3. Meanwhile, place the couscous in a heatproof bowl & pour over 250ml boiling water. Set aside for 5mins. 4. Fluff up the couscous with a fork then stir in the orange zest and juice, remaining 1 tbsp oil, the pomegranate seeds and herbs then divide between 4 plates. Top with the chicken skewers and serve with rocket and a spoonful of natural yogurt.
Cook’s Tip If you’re using bamboo skewers, soak them in hot water for 30 mins before using to help prevent them burning.

It can be hard to find a good salon for all your beauty requirements. Leah Durrant in nearby Chertsey offers both a wonderful hair salon and a fully comprehensive selection of beauty treatments at their Beauty Re:treat. I was invited along to meet Leah and her lovely team last week. I’m delighted to share my visit and experience with you here. Chertsey is surprisingly close by car and it took me a very short time to arrive in the town. There is a selection of free car parking options and I just happened to park in a space literally outside the salon! My first appointment was at the Beauty Re:treat just across the road from the Hair Salon. I arrived and was greeted by Hannah who was my beautician for this first treatment. I was looking forward to having my nails professionally done.
20 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
Hannah is trained in a wide selection of treatments. The Beauty Re:treat is deceptively spacious, with a number of very nice private treatment rooms for many appointments. For nail treatments however, there are a number of nail stations in the main area of the salon. We sat down and I was offered a drink. Hannah asked me about my preferred nail shape and colour; there is a huge selection of varnishes to choose from. I was very indecisive but finally I opted for a colour called ‘Fedora’ which is a gel varnish in a dark mahogany shade. Gel varnish lasts far longer than standard nail varnish, and once set under a nail lamp, it is totally dry, so no annoying ‘scuffing’ will occur on your way home! Hannah did a great job of shaping my short nails and painlessly removing my overgrown cuticles. Next, the varnish application; her steady hand created the illusion of perfect nails!

Good Luck!
One very happy customer! I left Hannah and headed back over the road to meet Leah. The hair salon is really lovely, with big fancy mirrors and a gentle dove grey interior. The walls are adorned with awards and press reviews, including one which reads ‘The English Hair and Beauty Awards – South East - Regional Winner Hair Salon of the Year 2016’. Pretty impressive, I’d say! Leah is very friendly and we chatted about my hair. I was offered another drink and a complimentary head massage by one of Leah’s team, Georgia. This was totally amazing and a wonderful start to my hair appointment. Afterwards, I was shown to the back wash sinks. The salon has a wide selection of Kerastase products on display and they used some of these to wash and condition my hair. It smelt and felt great. Georgia did a wonderful job and gave me another relaxing head massage. I was looking forward to seeing how Leah would dry my hair – needless to say, she did a great job, adding a bit of a wave to the ends. I really liked the finished result. This is a lovely salon, and coupled with the Beauty Re:treat over the road, they offer a very good all-round service. Thank you very much for looking after me so well. I really enjoyed my visit!

Auntie Planty’s NOVEMBER GARDENING TIPS Christmas Crackers
While we cram our house with all kinds of evergreens, tinsel and sparkle to create Christmas cheer, don’t write off what is happening in the garden. There are some real Christmas crackers outside in the wind and the rain, all ready to burst into colour and scent. It’s true to generalize that most winter garden flowers are pale in colour, if not white. And it’s almost true to say that most of these will have a scent. Think about it... the weather is dark and gloomy and there may well be a fog or a mist about. The only way the flower can hope to attract its pollinator is to shine like a beacon (pale colours show up better in the dark) and to push out a strong scent. I have three stalwarts in my winter flowering repertoire. The first is Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’, an upright deciduous shrub. The flowers begin to bud up in late autumn and you’ll probably not see them while the leaves remain on the plant. But when they open in their full glory, you won’t miss them. In the words of that inimitable Strictly Come Dancing judge – they’ll smell Fab-U-Lus. The second is Lonicera fragrantissima or its near relative L. x purpusii ’Winter Beauty’ – I mean, the names really do say it all! Both of these plants will push out their fragrant white flowers in pairs along naked stems. Unlike other honeysuckles, neither of these is a climber, and should be treated as rounded shrubs.
Actually, I cannot make up my mind which is my third best, so I’ll nominate two as an equal tie. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’ (witch-hazel) produces clusters of large, frost-resistant, fragrant, spider-shaped sulphur yellow flowers, again on bare leafless stems. The added bonus for this little beauty is its autumn leaf colour. What more could you ask? And the other tie for third is Chimonanthus praecox ‘Luteus’ (wintersweet) which has unusual, pendant and fragrant sulphur-yellow flowers with purple blotches inside. All of these plants will fare well in any sized garden, but placing them needs a little thought. There is no point tucking them at the back of a border. They are all best put close to a path or other place that you might linger, beside the patio or close to the washing line, perhaps even beside the front door to amuse your visitors. Wherever you put them, your nostrils will truly think it’s Christmas every one of those dark winter days. Valerie Munro is a chartered horticulturist. She offers unique and personal tuition sessions explaining the whys and wherefores of good gardening techniques in your own garden www.auntieplanty.co.uk

What are my responsibilities under the new workplace pension rules and auto enrolment?
A New employers and auto enrolment
Q
:
I started a new business back in July and
Even if you only have one member of staff who needs to be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme, they’ll still need to be put into the scheme before they can ask to leave it (‘opt out’). That is the whole ethos behind automatic enrolment. You may be able to use postponement. Postponement allows an employer to delay assessing and therefore enrolling, an individual, some or all of their staff into a pension scheme for up to three months. It is essentially a ‘waiting period’, during which an employer is expecting something to change about his team: for example, a staff member to leave or perhaps their wages to fall/rise. The employer must write to their staff to tell them they’re postponing automatic enrolment for them. Once the postponement period is over, you would need to assess your member of staff, and if they still meet the definition of an ‘eligible worker’, they will need to be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme immediately. Please note, a staff member also has the choice to opt in during postponement also. In 2016, only about 10% of workers opted out though, so please be careful in assuming your staff member might. And remember that coercing them into opting out is against the law. :

All our Yesterdays ST JAMES’ CHURCH, WEYBRIDGE
Join us for half an hour of favourite hyms and readings on Tuesday 14th November at 2.30pm
It’s hard to believe that we have been celebrating the All Our Yesterdays service for 2 years this month. Just where does the time go? Back in October 2015, it was very much something of an experiment, but we generally get between 40 and 60 people who join us for this very special and unique service. We have many regular attendees but it’s also nice to see those who pop in when they can and those for whom it’s their first time. Favourite hymns and readings are well-received and, depending on the stage of the person with dementia, it is humbling to see them singing when they recognise a particular hymn. Even if they cannot read the service sheet, the organ music sparks a remembrance from times gone by. Of course, the service is open to everyone and we welcome our own congregation and those from other

churches. We are very lucky with the number of volunteers who make this service possible and it is down to their dedication that the next service will be
held on Tuesday 14 November at 2.30pm The tea, cake and social time is just as important as the service, and representatives of the Alzheimer’s Society are around to help with any queries. If you have any spare time and you’d like to help, please do let me know and if you haven’t been before, do give it a try, you’ll certainly make new friends. Sepilok Orangutan My middle son Elliot and his girlfriend Lucy have been living and working in Australia for the past two years. They are returning to the UK in December but before they come home, they are enjoying a wonderful travel adventure. As part of this, they spent a few weeks in Borneo and went to visit The Sepilok Orangutan Centre. We have featured the centre in Look Local before because the UK Orangutan Appeal organisation is based locally to us here in Surrey. I asked Elliot to send an account of their visit to share with you. I hope you enjoy hearing all about it. The world renown Sepilok Orangutan Centre in Malaysian Borneo rehabilitat orphaned orangutans which have either lost their homes & families due to agriculture, de-forestation or in some cases because they were previously kept as inappropriate pets, and have now grown too big for their ‘owners’ to keep. During a recent trip to Borneo we were lucky enough to visit the center and see the amazing work they’ve
30 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
been doing. Helen the Liaison Officer for the UK Orangutan appeal introduced us to the staff and the chief veterinarian Dr.Nabila. Their enthusiasm for, and devotion to these wonderful critically endangered animals was very apparent from the off. We were shown a video about a young Orangutan called Alexis and her path to rehabilitation having been kept as a pet by a plantation worker. It is estimated that the Orangutan population will be reduced by 86% between 1973 and 2025. The center has been helping since 1964 and has seen two generations of wild Orangutan born as a result of one rehabilitated female. A wonderful reflection of their tireless work. Helen then walked us through the jungle, along a boardwalk to the outdoor nursery area, which had been built by the UK Orangutan appeal. We were delighted to see a collection of young Orangutans practicing their climbing skills on a playground of suspended ropes, platforms and hammocks all were designed to teach
Rehabilitation Centre them how to survive in the jungle and they looked as if they were having lots of fun as they swung and moved with such ease from rope to rope using their hands and feet and tails too (they don’t have tails). Even at this young age they were very adept and moved with such ease. It was a wonderful sight to see. After another brief walk along the jungle boardwalk we arrived at the feeding platform. Here the older rehabilitated Orangutans can feed twice a day to ease the transition into the wild. After waiting a while we saw a wild macaque monkey but no Orangutans. This is testimony to how well the program works; it means they have learnt to find their own food in the wild and no loner rely on the provisions provided by the center. Fortunately for us, at during the afternoon feeding we did see saw two playful, young (Mimi is a full grown female)Orangutans that Helen informed us were called Mimi and Itiban. They were swinging from the branches and really enjoying their dinner, such an
amazing sight. Lucy & I would like to say a very big thank you to Helen and everyone at the Sepilok Center for showing us around and teaching us all about this totally fantastic rehabilitation program. While the center is doing a great job in helping the Orangutans, they are still critically endangered creatures and greatly at risk. If you would like to find out more, donate or even visit Sepilok (which I would very much recommend) please visit www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk The charity run an Orangutan Adoption Scheme which makes an excellent present for Christmas for young and old alike and it lasts all year! You will receive updates and a photo of your chosen orangutan, and in these materialistic days, what a wonderful gift to give/receive. Contact www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk for more information.

Jonty Hearnden TO RUN THE DOVE BALL AUCTION
The Dove Ball will take place at Oatlands Park Hotel in Weybridge on Saturday 11th November 2017.
TV art and antiques expert Jonty Hearnden will be joining Woking & Sam Beare Hospices as the auctioneer at its annual glamorous Dove Ball at the elegant Oatlands Park Hotel in Weybridge on Saturday 11 November. Jonty, a familiar face on screen from Cash in the Attic, Celebrity Cash in the Attic, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is and the Antiques Roadshow, will also be contributing some of his own electic artwork to the auction, giving guests the opportunity to bid for pieces which are truly special and from limited collections. Jonty said, ‘I was very pleased to be invited to work with Woking & Sam Beare Hospices on this prestigious event, as the work they do is so important to so many people at a key time in their lives. My collection includes works by many artists, including Tracey Emin, Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, Banksy and Pablo Picasso, so there is something there to suit everyone’s taste. I love seeing people take the opportunity to own some art that they fall in love with which they might never otherwise have thought they could buy, and I hope to raise lots of money for the hospice in the process!’ Chief Executive Jayne Cooper said ‘We are delighted to have Jonty’s expertise and support for our auction. His wonderful signed modern and contemporary art and lithographs will add a special element to our auction prizes, and his infectious enthusiasm will undoubtedly encourage our guests to up their bids in aid of our charity.’ Limited Early Bird tickets for the Dove Ball are available until Saturday 30 September at a special price of £99 per guest, or tables for parties of 10 are available for £950. Oatlands Park Hotel are generously offering those buying Early Bird tickets the opportunity to be entered into a draw to win a free night’s stay on Saturday 11 November in one of the hotel’s exclusive Feature Rooms, where the winner will enjoy a post-party

After both silent and live auctions, swing and jazz band Jump 66 will get the party started on the dance-floor and you can dance the night away or enjoy a flutter on the casino tables and other entertainments. Honda Civic OUR NOVEMBER CAR REVIEW
By Ted Macauley
As any Formula One follower will tell you and eagerly supported by struggling double-champion Fernando Alonso, the Honda engine in the once-world-beater McLaren is a hapless and hopeless grand prix nonentity. Week in, week out, a very frustrated Alonso, the Spanish Flyer in slow-mo, has been dumped down among the also-rans because of the pathetic performance and the handiwork, or lack of it, of the Japanese engine makers. Maybe they should have replaced their GP power unit with one nicked from the company’s red hot hatch, the Honda Civic Type R, a real winner, or at least, talked over how to make an engine that hits the high spots of its crucial aims. The updated, uprated new entry onto the hot-hatch scene is unrecognisible from its predecessor which was up for grabs for less than two years and which struggled to make any sort of impression over and above disappointment because of its ride (which was too hard) on tyre noises that raided the eardrums. After a re-think at HQ, the brainbox engineers and designers sent a substitute into the reckoning, the brand new Type R, a real treat, with vastly improved set-ups all round, quieter, more refined but even sharper and neater, without ruining its general handling capability. Okay, the overall styling may be a wee bit bizarre
34 Looklocal Magazine - November 2017
compared with its impressive hot-seller rivals such as the Golf GTI, Mini Cooper S and Ford Focus RS, but it holds its own as full value for money and reliability on the move. Inside, the seating is superb and supportive, the cabin design stylish, the slick manual gearbox a treat. Throttle response is idea, the brakes are crisp and positive, the lay-out is practical, with easy-on-the-eye and reachable knobs and dials. Hot hatches exist basically in a very specialised zone and it is vital that their offbeat stance, compared with more sedate modes of transport, reaches into the real dynamics of motoring for fun and not just necessity for commuting or family transport. I must say that the rejigged Civic R covers the needs of practicality, economy and looks, with the added joy of being a genuine pleasure to drive around a town’s tight and busy streets or on the longer drags of motorways. Overall, it is sure to be a roaring and speedy success, unlike its flop of a big brother, blighting McLaren as a grand prix also-ran. Specification: price range £30,995 - £32,995. My choice, the fastest. VTEC Type R. BHP 320. Top speed 169mph. Acceleration 0-62 in 5.7 secs. Warranty: three years or 60,000 miles.

Playing with Perspectives COACHING WITH INSPIRATION
How else can I look at his? What else in my life am I not seeing clearly?
As I run through the woods at the end of a dog lead, I usually look down at the ground. After all, who wants to trip up over a tree root or step into dog poo? I notice the clouds and the trees rippling along the surface of the lake as I look down. They look beautiful. Imagine if that were all I ever saw of them, because I always looked down when I was outside: I might really believe that clouds and trees had wiggles in them! Later, I might tell you about the wiggly trees and clouds. And you would think I was nuts! “Rubbish,” you would say, “the trees are perfectly straight and the clouds are fluffy and definitely unwiggly.” (I did say in the title that we were playing, remember?) We could have quite an argument about clouds and trees. You would have no idea that I could only see them as a reflection on water, and I would have no idea that it was possible to see them any other way. We would both be talking about what we saw and believed to be true.
The way it is
Our understanding of the world is based on the way we look at it. Unless we’re aware that other possibilities exist, we will believe that what we see is the way it is. And even if we can see other possibilities, if they’re somehow connected to our original perspective - eg reflections on crisscross or concentric circle ripples, rather than on our usual wavy ripples - we are still trapped by an illusion. But once we realize that we can look at the clouds and the trees directly and not through their reflection on the surface of the water, we can start to build a more accurate picture of our world. So I invite you to think of an area of your life that isn’t working for you and ask yourself: “How else could I look at this? What else in my life am I not seeing
clearly? What other reality might there be out there waiting for me to see it? How might that change my life?” Sometimes it’s hard to see life in any other way than we’ve been used to seeing it. Those ‘reflections of reality’ could be anything from the rules we were given as children to experiences later in our life. That’s where having a coach who can be curious with us and invite us to explore different perspectives can totally transform our lives. I am reminded of Oscar Wilde’s words: two men look out from prison bars. One sees mud, the other, stars. What do you see? And does it serve you?
