WELCOME TO OUR NOVEMBER ISSUE Remember, Remember, the 5th of November! Firework season is upon us! Much to the horror of many of our beloved pets. Is it just me, or have fireworks become much louder these days? Some sound like actual explosions rather than the rockets I remember from my childhood! Or maybe, I’m just getting old! Please be mindful to keep your pets inside during the evenings for a few weeks, and why not turn the TV up for good measure! As well as this, we also need to remember all those who have lost their lives in active service for crown & country; there will be a selection of services across the area on Sunday 11th November to mark this Centenary Armistice Remembrance Day. It’s the time of year when we are able to include lots of pre-festive activities for you to choose from! A date for the diary has to be the Weybridge Christmas Market which promises to be a lovely day. You should be able to tick a fair few Christmas presents off your list and support our local retailers and stall holders at the same time! See page 30 for details. We are delighted to hear that the Ember Players are taking to the stage again; this time with David Tristram`s comedy “A Bolt From The Blue” which they will perform at The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames, Thursday 15th – Saturday 17th November. A great night out, I’m very sure. Further details within. I hope you have a good month, until next time, take care…

S a u t é e d po rk w i th p e a s & l e e k s Ingredients Method

1½ tbsp olive oil 1 pack Waitrose 1 Free Range Pork Leg Escalopes 2 leeks, trimmed and sliced 240g frozen peas 100ml fresh vegetable stock 1 tbsp dijon mustard 2 tbsp reduced fat soured cream ½ lemon, zest and juice 1 tbsp chopped tarragons

1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan over a medium- high heat. Season the pork escalopes & fry for 2-3mins on each side (in batches if necessary) until golden & almost cooked through. Lift from the pan & set aside on a plate. 2. Heat the remaining ½ tbsp oil in the pan & turn the heat to medium. Sauté the leeks with a pinch of salt for 10mins until soft. Tip in the peas & stock & simmer over a high heat for 2 mins. 3. Slice the pork & return to the pan, along with any resting juices, the mustard & soured cream. Season & stir everything together. Fold through the lemon zest & juice & tarragon before serving with new potatoes or steamed rice, if liked.

Cook’s Tip Wholegrain mustard works just as well as dijon in this recipe.

MAKING YOUR MONEY

WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

If your gross receipts are more than the limit, you may still be able to benefit under the Rent-a-Room Scheme because you can opt to deduct the Allowance of £7,500 (rather than your actual expenses). This may be beneficial if your actual expenses are less than £7,500. If you opt to deduct the Allowance rather than your actual expenses, you cannot create a loss. Your gross receipts include rental income (before expenses), any amounts you receive for meals, goods and services, such as cleaning or laundry and any balancing charges. Late confirmation statement

Renting out my home on Air BnB

Q. A.

I’m thinking about renting out my home on Air BnB whilst we’re on holiday. Will we have to pay tax on the rent we receive? If you provide furnished accommodation in your main or only home, (whether you own or rent the property), you should be able to use the Rent-a-Room Scheme. The Rent-a-Room Scheme allows you to receive up to £7,500 tax-free per annum (2017/18). This reduces to £3,750 if someone else receives income from letting accommodation in the same property, such as a joint owner. The limit is the same even if you let accommodation for less than 12 months. There are some conditions to meet to qualify for the Renta-Room Scheme, but they’re not difficult to achieve. You can’t use the Scheme if the accommodation is: · not part of your main home when you let it · not furnished · used as an office or for any business · in your UK home and is let while you live abroad The list above is not exhaustive of all the conditions of the Rent-a-Room Scheme. If your gross receipts from letting aren’t more than the Rent-a-Room limit of £7,500 (or £3,750), you don’t pay any tax on your rental income.

Q. A.

I got my dates muddled up and have filed my company confirmation statement a week late. What fines can I expect? The confirmation statement replaced the annual return in 2016 and serves roughly the same purpose. Companies must file their confirmation statement to provide Companies House with up-to-date information for inclusion on the public register. The confirmation statement must be filed within 14 days of the end of the review period, even if there haven’t been any changes during the review period. Companies only have to file one confirmation statement a year. However, you can choose to file a confirmation statement early, or more frequently than once a year. Late filing penalties do not apply to an overdue confirmation statement. Instead, failure to file confirmation statements, annual returns or accounts is a criminal offence which can result in directors being fined personally in the criminal courts. Any criminal proceedings taken as a result of non-filing of confirmation statements is separate from and in addition to any late filing penalty imposed against the company for filing accounts late. Companies House may also seek to strike the company off if documents are delivered late.

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS

The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, was a Victorian-era means of communication. Various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken. So which flowers said what? Rose Ok, we’ll start with the nation’s favourite flower – roses. Here the Victorian interpretation of colour is quite specific. Red roses do generally signify true love, but what about yellow? According to my scale of roseology, the message sent with a yellow rose ranges from platonic love to jealousy and infidelity – ouch, get that one wrong, and it could hurt! Roses have had a long and venerable history, stretching back as far as China some 5,000 years ago. From the sixteenth century on, roses were carefully selected, bred and improved to form new rose varieties, especially in Holland. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries roses enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, and many of the rose classics we admire today stem from that period. In my book anyone who is sent a bunch of roses can assume that it has been given in a friendly gesture. The trick to making sure that they last well in the vase is to remove the bottom few centimetres of the stem, and strip off all but the upper leaves. If you have also been provided with a packet of floral feed, then put

© 2018 Valerie McBride-Munro

this into the vase as directed. Otherwise, just make sure that the vase water is changed every few days. Carnation Now, if you’ve been given a bunch of carnations (Dianthus sp) – the colours might be stunning, but each one brings a different code. The Victorian message for red carnations would have been ‘my heart aches for you’, but the if florist of the day had run out of stock and had substituted yellow – oops. That would have read ‘you have disappointed me’; or with pink, ‘I’ll never forget you’; or anything with a stripe – golly, gosh that would read ‘Sorry I can’t be with you’. Daisy It’s not often that anyone would present you with a bunch of daisies, but in Victorian times that would have (sweetly) indicated innocence, purity, faith, cheer, simplicity. But you might like to know that the common name daisy (Bellis perennis) means day’s eye, and it comes from the fact that the flower opens in daylight and closes when night time falls. It really is a day’s eye. So, before you reach for that bunch, just take a minute to think about the unintended message that you may just be sending! BMW3 Saloon CAR REVIEW

One of the rewarding treats of for any car enthusiast has to be the highly sophisticated & stylish Paris Motor Show. And it was no different this time around, a showpiece battlefront of car sales. For me, the car of class was the new BMW 3 Saloon. The seventh generation of the brand & bound to continue. Since its launch in 1975, BMW’s most successful model has continuously improved. No wonder more than fifteen million have been sold worldwide. The latest motoring masterpiece, with its revised styling, superb driving dynamics, supreme handling & a host of innovative features, will be up for grabs from March 9, next year. On its captivating debut, in October in Paris, it had a look of quality without a mind-boggling asking price. The company’s 129,932 workers, and especially its inventive brain-box designers & specialised engineers, must be proud of their product. BMW claim the 3 Series saloon, with sales of 15 million, is the heartbeat of the company. The latest design benefits from revised proportions, a longer wheelbase, reduced weight & drag with neat & tidy precise lines that underpin it’s superior driving dynamics & road holding. It also revels in a fresh range of standard options for the clear & precise centre console, as well as safe feel revised leather steering wheels with multi-function buttons and thumb rests. It is taller, longer, roomier and wider than its predecessor. The cabin has been improved to maximise comfort with more leg & headroom for the occupants. Even getting

out has been made easier for rear passengers with the door aperture height increased. Occupants will be joined by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a clever digital operation that responds to the spoken prompt “Hey BMW”. This triggers the new era for the group in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions merely by speaking to it. Wow! The system helps the driver; learns their preferences, is familiar with their favoured settings; seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation facility. “Take me home” you order and it does. You can even give your Personal Assistant a pet name to create individuality. Not only does it obey your command it assists and provides casual rejoinder conversation. Saying “I’m cold” will stir the Assistant to adjust the temperature. Ask it where the nearest petrol station is and, warning you about traffic jams, it will guide you there. The astute updates on the car’s advanced technology allied to BMW’s anxiety to ensure the customer is satisfied they are getting their moneys worth, is a treasure. I don’t want to appear to be assuming the role of a salesman, but I confess I am a fan and would advise a potential buyer : go for it... Specification and choice. BMW320d. Power 190HP. WILL LIGHTNING STRIKE TWICE ON EMBER PLAYERS?

The Ember Players of Thames Ditton are about to raise the curtain on their 2018/19 season with David Tristram`s comedy “A Bolt From The Blue”. Director Steve Clunn said “Edward Jones is just an ordinary guy, doing ordinary things – if you count scaling towering electricity pylons for a living as ordinary! Then, the day before his 40th birthday, he gets struck by lightning.” What happens next is, quite literally, incredible. It defies logic and the fundamental laws of nature. “It`s is a very funny and quite poignant story,” says Steve. “It sets all the nerves tingling before reaching an extraordinary conclusion.” Actor Richard Lyons (pictured) plays the `electrified` Jones - and he`s hoping to avoid the `Ember Players Curse.` On an opening night, exactly 25 years ago, member Tony Smith (a former Deputy Head of St. George`s College, Weybridge) was playing a leading part in“Nightwatch”. “I was watching a rugby match that afternoon,” he recalls. “Suddenly an electric storm hit – and I was, quite literally, struck by lightning. The

metal handle of the umbrella I was carrying spat out an enormous, smouldering spark and the thing shot out of my hand. Fortunately for me, I was wearing rubber boots - or I doubt I`d have made it to the opening performance.” A lightning bolt carries twenty to thirty thousand amps of electrical current when it makes contact with the ground. That’s about 2,300 times more electricity than that used to power an average washing machine. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, between 30 and 60 people are struck by lightning each year in Britain and roughly three of those are fatalities. Tony Smith said “I`ve warned Richard not to play golf, use umbrellas or shelter under trees until the show is over…and, if we do get a major storm over the next couple of months, to avoid attending any outside sporting events - especially rugby!” “A Bolt From The Blue” is at The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames from Thursday 15th – Saturday 17th November at 8 p.m. Tickets from: www. ticketsource.co.uk/emberplayers or 07752 655087.

Inspiration! CHASE YOUR

OWN DREAM How can you tell if a dream is really yours? When I was a young girl, my mother used to say I would be a professor of mathematics like her brother. In fact, her own frustrated dream of achievement was at play; she was one of the brightest in her class but had to leave school early to support her parents while her older brother won scholarships to pursue his studies. I loved maths and did, in fact, end up studying the subject at university. I also loved languages, singing and writing, but it never occurred to me to study them. While I loved maths, I was not brilliant at it as my uncle was. Some years later I taught maths for a while, but that did not fill me with joy. After that, I worked in other areas that seemed like a good career move. They didn’t fill me with joy either. So what? you might be thinking. Joy? What a luxury! We’re lucky to have jobs. Stop moaning about joy and fulfilment and just get on with it. There was a time when I might have thought something similar. Now I see the other side of people who live joyless, unfulfilled lives. When my son was about to choose his A-level subjects, his headmaster urged all parents not to tell our children what subjects to take. He told us too many students dropped out of university because they realized they weren’t cut out to study law, medicine or whatever worthy career their parents had carved out for them. That realization can come in the middle of an expensive course of study – or after a lifetime spent chasing the wrong dream.

Chasing the wrong dream Today my client came to our coaching session with a revelation. It was only our second session working together. Last week she had been full of despair, consumed by a sense of failure, weighed down by years of disappointment at not having achieved her ambition, and the awareness that at her age, she was unlikely ever to do so. As a result of our coaching and her reflection between sessions, she had realized that the dream she had been pursuing all her life had not been her own. It was her father’s own ambition, and when he did not achieve it himself, he passed it on to her. It had taken her all her life to find this out. Now, she literally felt as though the responsibility to fulfill this objective had been lifted off her back. She felt lighter, free to find her own dream. How can you tell if a dream is really yours? Start by asking yourself how it makes you feel. And look for joy. I hope you find it!
