Welcome to our super summer issue which covers both July & August. Inside, we are delighted to bring you coverage of a lovely open day at nearby Bruce’s Doggy Day Care... looks like the humans and the canines had such fun ! We also hear about a very generous donation to Weybridge Bowling Club. This will go towards a new grandstand and is very much appreciated. See page 20 for all the details. Weybridge Choirs are busy and we have two great events for your diary:Weybridge Male Voice Choir and Elmbridge Ladies’ Choir. I’m sure both will be very entertaining and very popular, so get your tickets now to avoid disappointment Details within. There are lots of other lovely local events going on in the area over the summer months and we include a good selection on our What’s On pages. I hope there is something there which appeals. We will be taking a short break during August but look forward to bringing you more coverage of local events and news in September. I wish you all a lovely summer and do take care not to burn if you venture out in the sun (this seems like appropriate advice as I write this in a heatwave in mid-June - 30+C - but of course, it may well be totally ridiculous by the time you read this. In which case, don’t forget your umbrella!) Take care, until next time…

bowled over + BY SUPPORT FROM LEADING WEYBRIDGE ACCOUNTANTS +

A Weybridge-based bowling club has been ‘bowled over’ by a donation from one of the town’s leading accountancy firms. The Midsnell Activity Fund, established by MGI Midgley Snelling LLP, has donated £1,000 towards the new grandstand at Oatlands Park Bowling Club. Oatlands Park Bowling Club was established in 1924 and has 43 members, of whom 35 are active bowlers. It plays in the North West Surrey Bowling Association Leagues, as well as in regular friendlies, with a number of its players bowling for Surrey at county level or in county competitions. The club is keen to welcome new players of all standards. It has a clubhouse and has recently constructed a grandstand for players and spectators. The donation of £1,000 from the Midsnell Activity Fund has contributed towards the construction of the grandstand, which the club hopes will help get more people interested in bowling. Tracey Wickens, a partner at MGI Midgley Snelling LLP, said: “I was delighted to be able to present this cheque to the club. The new grandstand looks fantastic and is sure to encourage more people to join the club and get active. “Bowling is a sport which is accessible to an especially

wide range of people, and so to be able to help invest in the club’s facilities is a particularly effective way for us to help increase levels of physical activity in the community. “Here at MGI Midgley Snelling LLP, we are committed through the Midsnell Activity Fund to helping people in Weybridge and the surrounding area to become more active. Barry Judd, President of Oatlands Park Bowling Club, said: “We are very grateful to MGI Midgley Snelling LLP and the Midsnell Activity Fund for this kind donation, which has helped upgrade our facilities significantly for members and visitors. We are keen to see as many people as possible getting active, playing bowls and joining our club. I hope this will be the legacy of the donation from MGI Midgley Snelling LLP and the Midsnell Activity Fund.” MGI Midgley Snelling LLP established the Midsnell Activity Fund to promote engagement and participation in a range of different activities, enabling more people to live active, healthy and interesting lives. Let’ s Rock Shrewsbury THE RETRO SHOW
I had a truly poptastic weekend in Shropshire recently co-hosting Let’s Rock Shrewsbury, the Retro Show with Pat Sharp. It’s a movable festival, rocking and roaming the land far and wide for fans of the 80s and lovers of some of the most entertaining stars who bring the music of yesteryear to the fore with some electronic wizardry and clever musicianship. Some of the outstanding musicians graced the stage, while 10,000 fans danced and sang along to the cascade of hits. Among the entertainers were Nick Heywood, once of Haircut 100, now an established solo star, who had the good grace not to play songs from his great new solo release, which is out in few weeks. His set in Shrewsbury consisted of his impressive repertoire of hits and yet more hits. The ever-popular Tony Hadley did a full hour of hits from his spell as lead vocalist with Spandau Ballet, as well as several cover versions which reminded us just what a treasure he’s become. Nick Kershaw was at first unrecognizable with his white goatee, but once he plugged in and strummed his way into Wouldn’t it be Good!, there was no mistaking that guitar sound of his. Jaki Graham was her usual foot-stomping self and Billy Ocean topped the bill with unforgettable dynamics and a brilliant back-up band. Other fine hit-makers included Altered Images, Heaven 17, The Real Thing and local faves, T Pau. I had a ball and hope you’ll be able to join the Retro show sometime over the next few months.

Weybridge Male Voice Choir +
AUTUMN CONCERT SATURDAY 16 TH SEPTEMBER
The choir is in good heart, good fellowship and good voice, having performed and competed amongst the country’s biggest and best male voice choirs in the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival in April, and we are now working hard at some of the numbers that we heard other choirs sing there. Our varied programme has something for everyone and is designed to be above all entertaining and uplifting, but also reflective and moving. We include songs from musical shows, spirituals, Welsh hymns, traditional songs and ballads, plus choral arrangements of popular modern numbers, and because we now have rehearsal tracks to help us learn at home, we can bring in new pieces more quickly than we used to. With 60 of us singing together, you get that wonderful solid sound that only choirs of this size can achieve, even in the quiet pieces. And when the men of Weybridge Male Voice Choir take to the concert stage, they never fail to entertain.
O
What did our audience say about the Weybridge Male Voice Choir’s Spring Concert, which was sold out to an audience of 400 seven weeks in advance, and ended with a standing ovation?
‘It was wonderful. The singing was superb...all in all, the entire evening was a delight. All the numbers were lovely’. ‘What an amazing evening it was... we have invited friends of ours to join us later in the year to hear the choir sing’. ‘This was the first time that I had heard the Weybridge MVC. The evening was truly memorable. The singing was of a very high standard and the varied programme allowed them to demonstrate their versatility. A wonderful evening’.
‘I did not want it to end, and I know that I was certainly not the only one…an unforgettable wonderful evening’.
ur special guests at this concert will be The Chris Winslet Trio: Rhona Millar (sax, vocals), Diane McGuire (bass) and Chris Winslet (guitar, banjo). In 2016, Chris and his trio were a big hit at Treble Clef ’s concert in June and at our concert in October, delighting the audience with their eclectic jazz programme. If you loved them at those concerts, here’s another chance to see and hear them. And we will do a couple of pieces

together. That will be a new experience: the Weybridge Male Voice Choir singing with a Jazz Trio! So, what a treat in store! Great singing and entertainment from men, young and old, who love singing together and have fun singing together, and great jazz from a trio who just love playing. Tickets are bound to be in demand. WITH AUNTIE PLANTY +
Plants will live without being pruned. They will normally survive, though not always thrive, without feed. But the one thing that is a matter of life and death to them is water. Keep plants watered This is a vital month for ensuring that plants get sufficient water to stop them turning to a crisp. Once they reach a stage of dryness, it’s almost impossible to re-hydrate them, and they could peg out! If you use a hosepipe, then it’s much better to apply a thorough soaking once a week, rather than watering little and often. If you do the latter, the water only reaches the upper layers of soil, and roots are then encouraged to remain near the surface where they are more prone to dry out when the weather gets hot. A good trick to use with trees and shrubs at the time of planting is to sink a length of pipe with its bottom end just beneath the rootball. You can then water into the pipe, delivering water where it’s needed most. Weed control With most weeds growing actively now, it’s important to keep on top of them, otherwise they’ll take over. Hoeing once or twice a week is the best way to keep annual weeds under control, and it’ll also weaken the perennial weeds. If all else fails and you haven’t time to do this, at least remove the flowering head of any weed plant and you’ll stop the seed factory developing. Roses Keep a sharp eye out for pests and diseases, especially aphids, blackspot and mildew. Regular deadheading will encourage repeat flowering, but don’t do those varieties © 2017 Valerie McBride-Munro
grown for the autumn display of hips or you won’t get any. Be warned, the awful truth is that a female aphid doesn’t need a fella to get into the family way, and she will give birth to live young, rather than producing eggs which then need time to hatch. The clue here is time – allow one aphid a free shot at the beginning of the month, and as the temperature rises, the population explosion could be more than a million before you have time to sneeze. Hanging baskets Before hanging these up, make sure that the wall brackets are strong enough for the task: remember, a fully watered hanging basket can weigh a great deal, and last year’s wall fixing could have rusted and loosened during the winter months. Keep baskets well watered, and if you’ve forgotten to incorporate swell gel crystals, make a few deep holes in the compost using a pencil, and sprinkle a small pinch of these water retaining granules into each hole. Pots A plant in a pot is entirely at your mercy on the amount of water and nutrients it can use - unlike a plant in the open garden that can send out roots in search of water. And, pots have a horrible habit of drying out very quickly, and are very difficult to rehydrate! Valerie Munro is a chartered horticulturist. She offers unique and personal tuition sessions, explaining the whys and wherefores of good gardening techniques in your own garden www.auntieplanty.co.uk

Peugeot 3008 +
T
SUMMER REVIEW
hankfully, I have been stared at for reasons vastly different from when I was driving the freaky Post Office mail van lookalike, the bizarre offering by Citroen of the forgettable C3. And last time out in this column, I did reveal I would be reviewing the brand new Peugeot 3008. It is, thankfully, a top cat car…a PURRgeot…that got the cream and the award as Car of the Year in a respected prestige international motor magazine – all down to the brilliance and initiative of the admirable French company’s designers’ dash and inventiveness under pressure. The upshot, as welcome as can be, is a vastly improved second-generation 3008 that bears the significant hallmarks of improvement on its dull predecessor, and in the hotly contested SUV/Crossover market that is crucial to making it a real all-round treat for the buyers and, therefore, a surefire financial hit for the Gallic manufacturers. After all, style is said to be second nature to the French and here they have fully justified that reputation in the completely overshadowing of the 300’s now-gone older sibling SUV. I was mystified by the niggly nitpicking and trivial faultfinding of an irritating fellow reviewer who seemed to see more bad than good in the newcomer, which in my humble opinion has more pluses than minuses and seems to be the ideal contestant to set the pace in the SUV race. After my exasperating spell in the multi-coloured C3, it was a real joy to be seated in the refashioned 3008 on a trek to the Lake District with Trophy Wife, vast suitcases an’ all, under the gaze of amused and scoffing fellow motorists in their runof-the-mill cars. The 400-plus mile round trip, taking in motorways, alternately crowded and crawling and fast-moving, and then onto the twisty lanes around Coniston, was achieved

+
without a single moment of discomfort, anguish or regret and with a firm ride and safe feeling feedback. We arrived as fresh as can be with hardly a dent in my wallet…or TW’s purse…with the fuel flowing sparingly and returning a smooth and economical journey. Our traded thoughts were an agreement that the design team and engineers have done a superb job in turning out a nice looker with performance to please. And our upmarket lake view hotel car park was a fitting showcase for our upmarket transport. TW drove us home and she too echoed my appreciation of the willingness and response of the engine and the car’s solid and secure feel with its electronic grip traction control facility actioned. It is NOT a real off-roader in the rough riding, mountain-climbing 4x4 Range Rover sense, but the switch-on control smooths out the bumps on the lumpier lanes. Gadgetry? Yes. Aplenty. And completely uncomplicated, even for tech dunces like me. The upgraded and uprated Mark 2 offers a 12-inch instrument digital display feature and touchscreen, taking in sat-nav, rear parking sensor, climate control and a thorough infotainment system. The teeny-weeny steering wheel seems odd at first sight and initial grip, but it gives the driver an impression of fast and keen response and consequently boosts confidence that the car is heading the way you want it to go. And that’s my baseline thought on this near-perfect Peugeot innovation which mixes excitement and economy in a rare combination and is heading in the right direction in every sense. Specification: my try-out model was the SUV3008 GT, Blue HDi 1997 cc. Horsepower 180@3750rpm. Speed 131 mph. Acceleration 0-62 8.9secs. Fuel 58.9 mpg. Price: £33,155.

Elmbridge Ladies Choir
Surrey Music’s ‘Razzle Dazzle’ charity concert on Saturday night at Addlestone Community Centre evoked a mix of emotions for the society’s members and audience alike. Whilst the two community choirs were delighted to be performing and to be raising money for yourSanctuary (a charity which supports victims of domestic abuse), the evening was tinged with sadness, as it was the last time Elmbridge Ladies’ Choir’s Musical Director, Dale Thomas, would be conducting the choir. Dale, who was originally a singing member of the choir and has been Musical Director for 6 years, is moving back to her home town in Texas, USA to be with her family. ‘My time with Surrey Music has truly changed my life, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given,’ says Dale. ‘I’ve found new confidence, learned new skills, and made lifelong friends. I will hugely miss the choir, but they gave me a memorable send-off with their fantastic performance on Saturday night.’ Cliff van Tonder, CEO of Surrey Music, paid tribute to Dale and presented her with a framed certificate of honorary membership of Surrey Music. ‘It has been an honour and a privilege working with Dale and we will all miss her greatly. She has brought so much joy to all of us, but particularly her friends in Elmbridge Ladies’ Choir.’
Cliff van Tonder (CEO Surrey Music) thanks Dale Thomas
The mixed voice Elmbridge Choir kicked off the razzling dazzling spectacular by performing a number of songs from stage and screen, as well as a few more traditional choral pieces. Poignantly, the choir, led by Cliff van Tonder, dedicated their last song to those who have suffered as a result of the recent attacks in London and Manchester. When Elmbridge Ladies’ Choir, led for the last time by Dale, took to the stage after the interval, the audience was transfixed by an emotional but nevertheless perfect and powerful performance. Dale’s successor, Christine Parker, was introduced as she made her conducting debut for one song. ‘The evening was amazing,’ says Cliff. ‘This is the first time we have performed in Addlestone and we had a full house! We would like to thank the Deputy Mayor of Runnymede, Cllr Dolsie Clarke, for attending the concert, as well as Fiamma Pather, CEO of yourSanctuary. We are so thrilled to have been able to support the vital work of the charity, and wish them all the best in this, their 40th anniversary year.’ Proceeds in excess of £1500, in addition to £650 collected on the night, will be presented to your Sanctuary. COACHING WITH INSPIRATION
+
It was a dark and stormy night. Seriously, it was! I needed to do a friend a favour as I drove out of London. I stopped in a red route parking bay, looked out of the car window into heavy rain to read the signage on the lamp post and saw 7am – 7pm. It was almost 9pm, so I was ok. I ran into the shop and three minutes later, ran back and drove off. I thought nothing more of it until a couple of weeks later, when a brown envelope appeared in the post. I would have received a parking fine.
I
felt indignant. I hadn’t broken any rules - I’d checked the sign! TfL’s stupid system had got it wrong. A few days later, I drove past the spot in broad daylight to check the misleading sign, and found to my dismay that it wasn’t quite so simple. I hadn’t been able to see the whole sign from my car window and had missed a vital part. I was gutted. I decided to appeal and logged onto the TfL website. I gave my story: honourable motive, innocent mistake, heavy rain, couldn’t see sign in dark, truly sorry, learned my lesson, wouldn’t do it again if they’d be kind enough to waive the fine. A couple of months later, TfL replied, roughly along the lines of “Thank you for acknowledging that you made a mistake. It was your responsibility to know and comply with the regulations. We’ll let you off with a 50% discount if you pay £65 within the next 21 days, otherwise it’s £130. Your choice.” I was disappointed. I was also annoyed with myself, because if I was honest, I’d felt a tiny fluttering of discomfort as I’d left my car, as though my intuition had read the situation better than my eyes, and I’d ignored it out of expediency. They were right. It was my mistake, my responsibility, and now I had to pay the price. But I also learned to be more careful when checking things out. I learned to pay more attention to that still, small voice in the pit of my stomach. The lesson cost me £65, but the price for not learning it could have been a lot greater. So often in life, when we’ve done something wrong,
36 Looklocal Magazine - February 2017
we get angry with the situation. We make out the other person is being unreasonable. We call foul play, complain that it’s not fair. Sometimes, we even try to change the rules retrospectively. It’s like dropping things and then blaming gravity that they fall. Have you ever found yourself railing against reality? What can you do next time that will serve you better?
