From the Editor Welcome to our April issue,
TREBLE CLEF CHOIR
I do hope you are all well and that you enjoyed a lovely Easter break. I spent some of the long weekend sorting out my garden, and although I certainly don’t claim to have green fingers, it was good to tidy up a little after the dull months of winter. The grass is growing and the trees are budding. I’m looking forward to the green outlook after the bare tree view of the past few months. I must say, I’m even tempted to grow some veggies this year, nothing too ambitious, but the memory of the aroma and the taste of freshly picked tomatoes is tempting me to get my hands dirty! We have lots of fun things to share with you this month. I received a lovely message earlier last month, asking if I would share the following with you. The story started back in the mid-1960s in Twickenham and draws to a conclusion in Twickenham on the 16th April this year. It all hinges around a lovely old bus which, after all its trips abroad back in the 60s, has thousands of miles on the clock! Many of the young people who travelled around Eurpe on the bus back then came from the Surrey area and it is hoped that we can find and remind any of them reading this of those halcyon days and encourage them to attend a reunion after some fifty years. See inside for more information. Ted has been globe-trotting too, not on a bus, though. Read his account of a trip to remember aboard the QM2. A very brave and inspirational little lad also features this month. Please read Christian’s story, I’m very sure it will touch your heart and maybe together we can help him receive the life-changing surgery he so deserves. Fashion 4 Good is back, fundraising fashion at its best, and The Treble Clef Choir will also be back in action. Both lovely local events which are always a joy to attend, book your tickets now and save the dates! Added to this mix our regular puzzles, recipe, gardening feature, book reviews, lots of local events and so much more, I bring you this month’s Look Local in Weybridge.

n 7 February 1964, an advertisement appeared in The Times: “Young people over 18. See Europe in a double-decker bus. 25 July - 16 Aug. 6 countries. £28. Probably less. Phone POP 1841.” 22-year-old Tim Lewis came up with the idea and bought an old London Transport bus for £400. Actually, it was Cliff Richard in his film Summer Holiday who came up with the idea! On Saturday, 25 July, it left Twickenham with 23 girls and 17 boys on board - students from across Britain on a 2,000 mile, 3 week camping holiday across Europe. As dream holidays go, one that involves camping with a bunch of strangers and spending 3 weeks seeing Europe from inside an old bus that is hot, slow and as noisy as a steam kettle may not be everyone’s idea of the trip of a lifetime. But wind the clock back to ‘swinging’ 1964, and make that vehicle a gleaming red double-decker bus, still resplendent in London Transport livery, and everything changes. It was a trip that somehow captured the spirit of the age. The bus also attracted much press attention and

public curiosity. We’d stop at a garage to fill up with diesel, and a French TV film-crew would appear. In Paris, local press photographers insisted that we drive round and round the Arc de Triomphe in heavy traffic to get the perfect shot for their newspapers. In 1965, we formed the Double-Decker Club (DDC) and more holidays followed throughout the 60s. “Aside from the inevitable punctures, our biggest problem was low bridges. We’d even go down a country lane to avoid one. In mid-France, we were going through a vineyard when suddenly a group of French labourers working in the fields stopped working and started waving at us as if we’d come to liberate them. It was really quite emotional.” “Yes, it was all a bit hippyish and these were, of course, the groovy days of long hair, mini-skirts, psychedelic rock and free love. But the holidays themselves weren’t in any sense salacious, they were just immense fun, and many of the friendships that were made have lasted half a lifetime”. We have now organised a nostalgic DDC reunion in Twickenham on 16 April. For more details, email: ddc.alan@yahoo.co.uk

Christian’s Story This is Christian’s Story. 7½ years ago, 9 weeks early, a very special little boy came into this world, fighting. Christian was a twin and we discovered sadly when attending a routine scan that his twin brother Joshua had died, and as a result, had to be delivered by emergency Caesarean. Whilst we were devastated, Christian gave us strength by his sheer determination and fight. Unfortunately, at 18 months old, Christian was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and his battles began all over again. Christian is unable to walk unaided and faces many challenges in his life. He never compains and is an inspiration to all those around him. His determination has allowed him to thrive in main stream school and only rarely will you see him without a smile: he has a great sense of humour. He has fought many battles on his own in his life so far and has done so with sheer determination and also support from his family, but he has now been given the opportunity to have an operation, selective dorsal rhizotomy, which could allow him to walk unaided and improve his independence for the future. The operation and intensive physiotherapy was pioneered in the United States and is now available in the UK, but it has limited funding on the NHS, and we have been told by his specialist consultant at Great Ormond Street that whilst he is an excellent candidate for this operation and it will benefit him greatly, he will not receive funding, due to the limited funds in the NHS. While it is a great disappointment and easy to question why this funding is not available, we want Christian to have this life changing opportunity and are eager to find any way possible to fund this for him, so that our inspirational little boy has the very best chance of leading a normal adult life. www.justgiving.com/smileofinspiration Facebook/Christian Rogers - a smile of inspiration

he motor-mad fraternity is about to be wooed by a handsome newcomer, or to be more accurate, an updated and uprated version of a long-standing legend. So, stand back and admire Volvo’s latest desirable stunner, the XC90, and if you are looking for sheer value for money, dig out the cheque book. NOW!! This re-booted seven-seater family wagon is a surefire winner on the hugely competitive SUV battlefront, following on in fresh form from its beloved predecessor which first graced the roads 12 years ago. And the likes of rivals BMW X5, the Audi Q7 and yes, even the immaculate Range Rover, are in danger of being overshadowed by this kingpin car with its five-star lustre. A harmony of great looks and sumptuously elegant style allied to absolutely spacious comfort, safety and performance are guarantees of another formidable market run for
the Scandanavian manufacturers. Unlike some opposing SUVs, the three rows of fulsome seating capable of coping with seven long-legged adults are Business Class, bordering on First, and with the sensibly situated sideways-on engine cockpit, room is extensive. As a family transporter, it could not be better. The first two rows have five seats that all recline and slide, and the third row is more than adequate for teenage restlessness.Behind all of that is a boot big enough to swallow up all the kit you and the kids would want to carry away on holiday. The 2.0-litre, four cylinder engine and four-wheel drive all add up to admirable refinement and driving ease, with eight automatic gears to smooth you and yours along motorways and down wiggly country lanes with equal agility. The whole plot is almost five metres long, so Volvo, mindful of parking problems and rear-viewing for space, have fitted a park-assist system that guides you safely into your tight target gap.
And just in case you fail to notice an invasive cyclist or a road-crossing pedestrian, mobile pressed to ear and absent-mindedly failing to see you coming, there’s an auto-brake that detects them and any other vehicles and stops you in your tracks. The drivers’ eye view in a wholly wow-factor interior, all glorious leather and grainy woodwork, is just the job, and all the on-board functions are controlled from a nineinch tablet touch-screen set-up that dominates the centre dash. And you need only wag and wave a finger, gloved even, near the screen to operate all sorts of services, such as the cute infotainment system, satnav, climate control and all manner of jam-packed technology. I have to say the entire experience, taking in short or long journeys alike, in town or out, is a real treat in a versatile all-rounder of upper-class style. Specification: the Volvo D5 Inscription. 2.0-litre. BHP 228. Top speed 137mph. 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. Mpg 48.7. Price £50,685.

Looking ahead, locally... Tim Firth, Director of Sales at Jackson-Stops The fundamentals & Staff’s flagship Elmbridge office, takes a of supply and look at the local property landscape.
demand remain conducive to continued activity and price growth
Last year, house prices rose across Surrey by 8%, as reported by the Land Registry, which was higher than the country’s average of 6.4% but below London, which enjoyed increases of 12.4%. A trend that we witnessed over the course of last year was that the outer London boroughs began to outperform central London. Since the beginning of 2016, demand for properties at the upper end of the market has suffered from a degree of uncertainty, stemming from a series of tax changes, most notably the Stamp Duty Land Tax which the market is still absorbing. The Elmbridge market holds similar demand characteristics to these seen in Greater London and is more tied to domestic demand, which has gained momentum from continued low interest rates and higher confidence. Recently we have experienced an increase in purchasers registering with our office on Queens Road and across the markets demand exceeds supply. The fundamentals of supply and demand remain conducive to continued activity and price growth. The higher value markets remain price-sensitive and we anticipate the rest of this year will see little change to last year. Do get in touch to arrange an up-to-date market appraisal of your property, we would be delighted to help.

Queen Mary 2 The Statue of Liberty, highlighted by a shaft of dawn sunlight against a backdrop of New York’s spectacular silhouetted skyscraper lights, was the greeting icon as Queen Mary 2 sailed majestically towards landfall after a week-long crossing of the Atlantic from her UK base in Southampton.
Despite a night’s farewell partying until 2am, my and my wife Delia’s 4.30am awakening by the butler tending our Queen’s Grill stateroom, was boosted by the anticipation of being welcomed by the skylined iconic figure towering over New York harbour, America’s gateway. Like standing beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, eyeing Japan’s snowcapped Mount Fuji from the cosy comfort of the Bullet Train or visiting the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, as if beckoning, offers untold promise of new experiences. It was a scene described to me years ago by my grandfather who was Third Engineer on the original Queen Mary...that and his tales of revelling and cocktailpartying with movie legends such as Erroll Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, David Niven, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. A summons to New York by my publisher was the perfect opportunity
for me to realise a lifetime’s ambition and follow in the footsteps - or rather the ocean wake - of my grandfather and sample ultimate style on the go. And, believe me, the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest, widest, tallest liner ever built, exemplifies the highest grade possible of totally pleasurable life on the ocean waves. I reckoned she would be big, but even my wildest imaginings fell far short of actuality when I left the reception zone at Southampton and was confronted by the Queen, towering as high as a 23-storey building, 200 feet above the waterline and stretching 1,130 feet long. My amazement rarely faltered over the following eight days at sea in this 150,000 tonner which, with its Rolls Royce units, equivalent to 115,328HP, and stabilizers, made such lightwork of three days of riding gale force eight waves that it barely stirred a ripple in our pre-dinner bubbly. For those who worry about sea-
sickness, the worst the notorious Atlantic can throw at a ship like the QM2 is little more than a mere disturbance without discomfort easily dealt with and levelled out. And that brings me to another worthy aspect : the exquisite dining. Every night was a black tie and cocktail dress event for couples who revelled in the formality and festooned themselves in finery worthy of any red carpet showpiece gala. If you had forgotten to fill your Vuittons with the necessary evening apparel, there was a full range of the poshest formal wear available for hire. Feasting in the 1,347-seater Britannia Restaurant, an elegant dinery stretching the width of the ship, three decks high - and with a vast staircase, the grandest of entrances - was the perfect setting for some show-offery. Talking about showing off, Trophy Wife Delia and I were invited ahead of nearly 2,000 fellow passengers to dine exclusively with the captain, Kevin Oprey, at his table, along with
tenor Jonathan Ansell, starring on more than two million albums, and the top of the bill in the QM’s tiered 1094-seater theatre. The delights did not end there. I found myself heading daily to the classy bows-end pianobar Commodore Club to meet up with new-found friends.

Our highest grade stateroom, with its balcony, bar, TV and vast doublebed, was a spacious sanctuary, served discreetly by our own immaculately dressed butler who, at whatever time, day or night, he was asked to be in attendance, was never a splitsecond late. We ate mostly in the exclusive and efficient cosy 200-place Queen’s Grill with its ocean views and cuisine on a par with the finest on-shore dineries. Passenger care was the watchword, with attention paramount, whether in or around one of the four swimming pools, the spa, the gym, any of the 14 bars, the cigar lounge or the planetarium. If isolation is your preference, there is ample deck space to find a quiet spot where you can snuggle on a deck chair under a blanket and read a borrowed book from the library and its 10,000 tomes. Before you know it, your butler, bearing your regular nightcap, is inquiring:”Shall I awaken you in time for your first sighting of the Statue of Liberty?” With the apology: ”It will be about 4am.” And there she is on Liberty Island, one of our planet’s most notable landmarks, 93 metres high, with seven spikes in her crown representing seven oceans and the world’s seven continents, and with 354 unseen steps up to her crown
Ritz-Carlton Hotel opposite Central Park and a casual stroll away from Fifth Avenue and Times Square. And our fussed-over luxury lifestyle starts all over again. Not since I was last in New York, when I arrived by Concorde from Paris, had I been fortunate enough to sample the high life unique to this vibrant metropolis, like the tasty cuisine in the uppercrust diner, the Auden Bistro, in the Ritz-Carlton. And in between, the down-to-earth value-for-money warmly welcoming Italian family restaurant Antica Bottega del Vino, a five minute stroll away from the hotel’s front door to its pavement terrace. I was very pleased to see that the place had not really changed since my last visit. My four days in New York passed in a flash and I would have eagerly made a leisurely return to London aboard the Queen Mary 2. But sadly, an urgent diary date in Cobham had me flying home. Ah well, it was very nice while it lasted... By Ted Macauley

If I had a penny for every time I brought up the subject of feeding plants, I’d be very rich indeed. Just as the human body needs the right food for health and vitality, so do your garden lovelies.

In the food world, we have become quite used to reading pack labels to establish ingredients – low fat, salt content, etc., so I’m now advocating that you do the same with plant fertilisers. First, let’s take a brief look at the three major nutrients that are vital to a plant to guarantee it a healthy life. Understanding this will take you a long way to success. Nitrogen (N) This is the plant’s leaf maker, and is a major component of chlorophyll, the stuff that makes leaves green. Plants that will have the greatest need for nitrogen are those vegetables grown for their leaves and lawn grasses. If your plant’s lower leaves are turning yellow, but the growing tip remains reasonably green, your plant is calling out for nitrogen. Iron is needed when the upper leaves look mottled green/yellow. However, if your flowering plant is producing lovely leaves, but it isn’t flowering then the chances are you are feeding it too much nitrogen and not enough potassium (see below) Phosphorus (P) Often described as the plant’s root-maker, it’s a component of DNA and regulates the rate of growth and reproduction of cells at the plant’s growing tip (and this includes the growing roots too) and germination of seeds. In a nutshell, no

phosphate, no plant growth! Potassium (K) Potassium is needed by the plant to set flower buds, which go on to give the plant sufficient energy for the buds to open to then set fruit and seeds. If your flowering plant is either not flowering at all or producing flower buds that fail to open, then the nutrient needed is potassium. All plant fertilisers must declare their nutrient content on the label. It’s expressed as a ratio, giving the values in a block of three numbers. For example, with the plant food that I always recommend for flowering plants, a slow release granule product where one application will last for six months, the NPK ratio looks like 12:7:19. This reading tells me that there is a higher ratio of potassium to nitrogen (with tomato food this will be twice the amount) and therefore perfect for all plants but the grass. Slow release v liquid Unless you can guarantee that your soil is well hydrated at all times, I would choose granules to scatter around the base of each plant. Stop...
...That’s what I told myself a few weeks ago. I’d had it with my lifetime habit of nibbling nails and picking cuticles. Actually, only my index and middle fingers were subjected to this abuse, but that was bad enough. I’d watched someone recently at a meeting gnawing his nails, and knew it looked weak, immature and ugly.
I
had just listened to a famous motivational speaker recounting how, in his youth, he’d been about to sign a contract with a powerful and successful woman when she saw his raw, bitten nails. She’d tossed back the contract and declared she couldn’t do business with someone who had such little self-discipline. That wasn’t how he saw himself! Suddenly, the pain of continuing his habit was greater than the pain of changing it. He immediately stopped biting his nails. It wasn’t how I saw myself either, nor how I wanted to be seen. If he could do it, so could I. My nails weren’t even as bad as his. So why hadn’t I stopped before now? Lack of commitment. I had often thought, “I really must stop this”. But I just told myself off every time and did it again. There was always the excuse of “The nail is torn – I’ll bite it off before it gets worse”. I’d also conned myself into believing that no-one noticed. Which was rubbish. I scoured the internet for ‘How to stop biting nails’ advice. It ranged from covering nails with sticking plaster or masking them with fake nails, to painting them with foul-tasting solutions. None of those appealed. Surely the point was that I needed to be grown up enough to do whatever it took? I’d once given up chocolate for 23 years and I knew that all it took was a good reason – and a decision. A reason - I realized it wasn’t the doing that was the issue. It was the being. I didn’t want to be the woman who nibbled nails. Or who lacked discernment, selfdiscipline or determination. Who did I have to become for nail-nibbling not to be an option? I felt my posture,
my thoughts, even my internal chemistry, change as I stepped into the ‘new me’. And a decision - “I’m going to stop. Now!” It’s been really easy since that moment. As soon as my fingers approached my mouth, the ‘new me’ told herself “I’m not the kind of person who does that”. She expected more of herself. And she got it. My fingers came down. Within a few days, they had almost stopped going there. Are there things you do that are at odds with how you see yourself? Who do you need to become in order to change them?
Take Action!

The wonderful Ray Davies is one of the most successful and influential songwriters to emerge from the glorious British invasion of the international pop scene of the mid-60s. He formed the Kinks with his brother, Dave, in North London in 1964, and Ray went on to sing, write, create some of the best-loved songs and anthems of the era. Hits such as You Really Got Me, All the Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting, Set Me Free, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Apeman, Come Dancing and Where Have All the Good Times Gone (which was later covered by David Bowie on his Pin-Ups album) are all evocative memories from an amazing time. Actually, I’ve always thought that Ray and David Bowie had something in common by singing in their English accents, unlike so many who adopted an American accent while singing about and also celebrating the sights and sounds of everyday life here. Other artists who would end up competing with them for chart places were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, the Animals, Them, the Who, Small Faces and many more. So, with all that as a background, it was a real pleasure to visit The Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End one evening last week to see Sunny Afternoon, the multiaward winning, feel-good musical which is based on the music of The Kinks. Life wasn’t always smooth for the Londoners. Having got into a dispute with America’s musicians’ federation, they were banned from touring in the US for 4 years, which cost them millions, and the on- and off-stage infighting between Ray and Dave often meant an edgy, tense relationship. The Kinks’ extraordinary story, which unfolds in Sunny Afternoon, is a must-see. More than just a cavalcade of some great hits, it’s a show which is both enlightening and entertaining in equal measure and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves the 60s and remembers the Kinks’ contribution with affection.
