Welcome to April
I am writing this introduction, several weeks before it will reach you. As a result, with news and advice changing daily with regard to the Covid-19/Corona Virus, it is very difficult for us to predict the situation by the time our magazine reaches your home. As a community lead publication, our pages are always full of local events and activities for you to read about and more importantly attend. It takes us all month to collect/collate & compile our events listings and as a result, it is impossible for us to change or remove all these entries as our print press awaits our magazines now. Groups and organisations may decide to cancel or postpone their published events, so please check with the organisers before you go along. Do remember that we include a wonderful collection of local businesses and services for you to take advantage of, maybe now is the time to sort out all those little jobs you haven’t had time to organise before. It is important that we continue to support our local businesses. We all need to focus on what really matters during testing times; we have been very touched at the level of concern locally for the elderly members of our community. A group called ‘Corona Community Care’ has been set up with just this in mind, many local people are keen to help elderly neighbours or those who are having to self isolate and need help. Please see page 6 for details. Simple acts of kindness could make a massive difference to someone’s life. As the main recommendation for keeping well, is good hand hygiene, we have enclosed an official hand washing guide. This is so important and seems to be the number one way to cut your risk of being infected by the virus. Soap and water will do the job, follow the recommended methods and keep your hands away from you face as far as possible. Stay safe good people and I wish you all a peaceful Easter. With Best Regards,
Ros

Close Encounters AN UNCOMFORTABLE BLACK COMEDY by Jimmie Chinn Adapted and Directed by Karen Buchanan
Just drinks and nibbles with neighbours on a suburban Saturday night. And one late arrival. What could possibly go wrong? Set in the eighties, comedic and sometimes tragic, ‘Close Encounters’ takes its audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. c hocolate egg cupcakes The perfect Easter treat, and so easy to make - follow the simple recipe for gorgeously chocolatey sponges, then top with our ready-made chocolate icing and a Mini Creme Egg.
ingredients 100g unsalted butter, softened 175g caster sugar 3 British Blacktail Free Range Eggs 75ml whole milk 150g self-raising flour ½ tsp fine salt 25g Cadbury Bournville Cocoa Powder 400g tub Cooks’ Ingredients Tanzanian Chocolate Icing 2 x 89g pack Cadbury Mini Creme Egg (Serves 12)
method 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4; line a 12-hole muffin tin with Cooks’ Homebaking muffin cases. Using electric beaters, cream together the butter and sugar for 2-3 minutes in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs until combined, followed by the milk. Mix together the dry ingredients and sift into the mixture. Beat in gently until combined. 2. Divide evenly between the muffin cases and bake for 20 minutes. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then lift out and leave to cool completely on a wire rack. 3. Give the chocolate icing a stir, then transfer it to a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle (or you can spoon it on if you don’t have a piping bag). Pipe over the top of the cakes. Halve the Mini Creme Eggs by cutting down the join with a sharp knife. Arrange on top of the icing and serve.
cooking tip An ice cream scoop is useful for dividing the cake batter evenly between the muffin cases.
Prep: 35 minutes, plus cooling. Cooking: 20mins Recipe & Photo reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes
Woodcraft folk
Woodcraft Folk is a national movement for children and young people and Walton District has successfully been running weekly groups and a wide variety of activities for nearly 48 years. We have now launched a brand new Elfin group in Weybridge and are looking for children to join us. We offer a place where children will grow in confidence, learn about the world and start to understand how to value our planet and each other. At Woodcraft Folk we believe passionately in equality and co-operation: everyone is welcome to join our groups. Every week thousands of volunteers and young people meet in school halls, community venues and a host of other places to learn about big ideas through fun activities like singing, camping, playing and debating. Our group nights usually last between one and two hours, depending on the age of the children or young people. Whilst adult volunteers, parents and young people run the group nights we ask children to contribute their ideas and are encouraged to make suggestions for activities, camps and group trips.

Peugot 208 ALLURE CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
There is a real treat in store for the fans of stylish French chic in the petite shape of the new Peugeot 208, a hotshot rival to all the runners in the ever increasing horde of super-minis and city cars. The last 208 was not too great a challenger to the well established likes of the VW Polo, the Ford Fiesta and the Seat Ibiza - but the latest version this sporty and elegant 208 will give them all a run for their money. And I am an unashamed fan. It offers the option of three petrol engines, one diesel and a promise to put an electric model into the fray. This hatchback has been voted the European Car of the Year. It is all set for even further success and even more global awards. It’s a looker. A five seater. And spacious on the inside, even for the leggiest among us. The electric model has a welcoming range of 217 miles. And any noise levels have been suppressed so your eardrums are not invaded either in stop-go situations or flat-out on motorways. The 1.2 Puretech engines have a boom that fades at motorway pace, and the diesel sounds a bit more hoarse whatever your demands on speed, but you would not regard it as unpleasant. The six-speed box may not enjoy the precision of say a Ford Fiesta or the Ibiza - but is responsive and slots easily into every gear. A slight setback are the views from behind the tiny steering wheel. The thickness and angle of the car’s
24 Looklocal Magazine - April 2020
windscreen pillars obscure some of your view through twists and bends - but there are reasonably proportioned door mirrors. However, the rear pillars and sloping roof limit what you can see behind your back. As for parking. No problem. Fitted as standard on all models are rear parking sensors. If you are a penny pincher subject to lengthy journeys and massive mileage all year round then it is worth giving consideration to the diesel powered version purely for economy reasons. And that brings me to the 1.5 BlueHD 100. It has bags of punch from the lowest of revs and feels as sprightly as can be when it sets off from standstill. With its useful pulling power and acceleration you are freed from meddling with the gear stick. Even the least costly trim level ACTIVE is more than adequately equipped with 16 inch alloy wheels, heated door mirrors, automatic lights, air con and a leather steering wheel. The ALLURE adds 17 inch alloys, electric rear windows, climate control, privacy glass, automatic wipers and power retracting door mirrors. And there’s more. Much more.... The brainstormers behind the scenes at Peugeot have come up with a genuine showcase contender in the hard-fought city car battleground. Go for it... Specification: The Allure: Engine 1.2. Speed 0-60 in 9.6 secs. MPG:44.3. Price: £18.870.

Gardening with Auntie Planty S L U G S
This month I’m going to turn my attention on my arch garden nemesis, the slug. And with your help, I could be about to declare garlic war on it.. The slug is undoubtedly numero uno in the garden pest hall of fame, and Britain is definitely slug city of the world. It’s our wet and warm-ish weather that does it. If you are counting, there are around 30 different species of slug in the UK, but for this unscientific study of mine I am only going to look at the big four - field slug, garden slug, black slug and keeled slug. I already know how they chew on plants, using a rasping motion with a devilishly multi-toothed tongue – I mean everyone has had experience of the horror of a totally decimated plant, within hours of it being planted – I need to find an efficient way to keep them at bay. It should be something of a surprise to you to learn than only 5% of the slugs in the garden live on the soil surface; so that means that 95% are playing hide and seek underground. And if you could actually get out and count them, you’d probably find around 200 of the slimey gastropods in each cubic metre of your garden. And did you know that ironically the largest of them (the black slug) causes the least damage? Other fascinating facts are that slugs are hermaphrodite, so they can fertilise themselves although a mate is allegedly preferred; one individual slug lays between 20 and 100 eggs, several times a year, and that these eggs © 2020 Valerie McBride-Munro
can remain dormant in the soil for years. And what’s more, that awful silvery tell tale slimey trail is in fact highly scented so that a slug can find it’s way back to that delicious patch of whatever was being munched the previous night. Are you now getting a sense of the size of the problem? Now here’s where you come in. If you have a patent method of controlling slugs without harming the other wildlife that you share your garden with, then do let me know (Valerie@auntieplanty.com); the wackier the better but it must have the potential to work. I’m also asking you here to test drive a garlic wash to see if this works for you.. Crush two bulbs of garlic and steam or boil in 1.5 litres of water for 3 to 4 minutes until blanched. Strain the mixture and make it back up to 1.5 litres, and leave to cool. When ready to use, mix one tablespoon into a gallon (3.8 litres) of water. Spray on to leaves in late afternoon (in dry weather). However, don’t blame me if your neighbours complain of the resulting stink! Valerie McBride Munro is a chartered horticulturist. She helps you develop your own garden Action Plan to ensure the best possible results for your plants. www.auntieplanty.co.uk

Lost Letters is a community heritage project, funded by the Heritage Fund, to engage people across Surrey with their local history through a partnership with Surrey History Centre and the rich archives they hold. It will highlight the universality of our experiences as residents of Surrey by bringing to life the lives and experiences of our predecessors and asking for a response, by letter or through the visual arts, from current residents, who will be invited to take part. It will culminate in a book, an interactive touring exhibition and an online legacy, displaying the original letters alongside some contemporary responses. Most people can relate to the key experiences and phases of life - childhood, school, love, parenting, friends, work, home, holidays, loss, celebrations - and this project will share them through the medium of letters and visual arts, bringing to life some personal heritage of the people of Surrey and illustrating its importance, value and relevance for people living in Surrey today. Collections in the project include the frank and engaging letters of Lady Mary Wallis to her friend Mary Turner covering all aspects of living life in Surrey whilst raising a family and being married to the engineer Sir Barnes Wallis and the letters of Herbert Henry
Bowerman, a private in the trenches during WW1 “I feel awfully weak some days but they say it is no use going to the doctor unless you are nearly dead. This exciting project is joining forces with The Royal Star & Garter Home in Surbiton, The Princess Alice Hospice in Esher, Hinchley Wood Secondary School and the Halow Project in Guildford where a series of workshops will be run between April & July 2020. The written and visual arts responses to the letters, created during the workshops, will be shared in a free interactive touring exhibition around Surrey during the Autumn of 2020. There will be opportunities for the public to add their own responses. Get in touch now if you are interested in being involved in this project. We are looking for volunteers to help at the workshops and support the tour. For more information and to volunteer email: itsnotyourbirthdaybut@gmail.com or you can write to INYBB, The Old Bank House, 26 Station Approach, Hinchley Wood, KT10 0SR.

Running Out … and Filling Up
Have you ever run out of fuel? Usually, when I notice I’m running low on fuel, I make a mental note to stop for some the next time I pass my usual filling station. If I forget, or decide I’m in too much of a hurry and I’ll fill up the next time, and then I don’t … I know I’m asking for trouble. The time will come when I’m holding my breath, travelling towards an empty tank and a burnt-out engine, wondering if I’ll manage to fill up before I run out. It’s not worth the risk.
and grounded, we have more energy to share, we work harder - and we’re much happier. Being mindful of the thoughts with which we fill our minds is just as important. We wouldn’t put the wrong type of fuel in our car and expect it to run smoothly. Similarly, we know that some of our thoughts lead to a bumpier ride than others. Is it really always raining? Do you only see clouds wherever you go? Or do you remember that the sun is shining behind them, creating those silver linings?
The same thing applies to our emotional fuel tank, except there’s no gauge in front of our gaze to flag up that we’re flagging. When we’re feeling low, it’s our mind that sends us messages: “Hey, don’t just sit there, call a friend / get some exercise / meditate / put on some cheerful music and dance / watch a funny film / do something to help someone else.” But often we argue with ourselves: “I’m too busy … my boss needs this … my children need that.” We ignore our needs. And so the internal messaging system gets louder. Headaches, indigestion, a stiff neck, backache, a tight chest. It’s saying “Listen to me!”
Since we live in the feeling of our thoughts, remembering to fill up with thoughts that give rise to better feelings will make our journey through life smoother and more enjoyable. We won’t pollute the atmosphere along the way. And we won’t need to stop to fill up so often.
We do need to fill up, regularly, if we don’t want to burn ourselves out. (And where would our boss and children be then???)
PS - Wondering how you can change your thinking? Call or email me to claim a 50% discount on an Inspiration! coaching session when you mention LookLocal Weybridge.
Three slow, deep breaths in and out of the belly. A brisk walk, preferably somewhere beautiful in nature, unplugging from whatever we left behind at home or work. A chat with a good friend who cares enough to listen without interrupting or judging or giving advice. Maybe self-care feels indulgent. Maybe we think we’ll be criticized for not working hard enough. Maybe we feel noble putting others first. But when we’re rested
Protect your inner environment. And enjoy the ride,
