Happy birthday to us Happy birthday to us Happy birthday, dear Look Local Happy birthday to us!
Eleven years old and still looking as fresh as a daisy, thanks to our wonderful Look Local designer, Kirsty Hamilton! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal readers and advertisers who continue to support and hopefully enjoy Look Local. And a special thank you must go to my wonderful Look Local team who continue to support me on an ‘over & above’ basis, you know who you are! X We look forward to bringing you community information and local services again next year. In fact, here’s to the next eleven, I say! ‘It’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas’ in Weybridge! Christmas lights are appearing, and the heart-warming sound of Christmas carols can be heard ringing around the village from time to time. Heatwave or anow is the burning question, of course, as the warmest year on record comes to a close. My plan to get ahead with my Christmas shopping has worked well, and I’ll soon be ready for the big day. Normally, I haven’t even started by this time, but I really wanted to avoid my normal last minute panics. Just got to get down to some serious wrapping now and I must remember to order my turkey too! Good luck with your own preparations and do remember to support our wonderful local businesses who offer a fantastic selection of goodies. This festive issue of Look Local will take us through until the end of January, when we look forward to launching into 2017 for another busy year in Weybridge. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas & a happy and healthy New Year. Until next time, take care.

AROUND THE WORLD’
CONCERT With Weybridge Male Voice Choir
Weybridge Male Voice Choir presents a fun-filled Christmas cracker of a concert - with an international flavour - at St James’ Church Weybridge on Friday 9th December at 7.30pm. Come, sing and enjoy! The concert will feature traditional music perfectly capturing the true spirit of Christmas, but spiced with joyous seasonal classics and Christmas music from around the world. This year’s Christmas concert is extra special, not only because the Weybridge Male Voice Choir will be joined by the choir of St James C of E Primary School as it traditionally is, but also by - this year for the first time – the St James’ Hand Bell Ringers. The joint piece with the school, “O Holy Night”, at the end of the concert, will be an incredibly poignant end to a varied programme. All-time favourite carols will include O Little presents Town of Bethlehem, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Good King Wenceslas. This is the first time the choir has featured a global theme for its Christmas concert, and just some of the international songs include: with St. James Hand Bell Ringers

ANXIETY What is it and how can counselling help?
Many of us experience anxiety at times – we may worry about fitting in with friends, doing well, money and so on. This is entirely normal. It may reach a point, though, when it becomes a problem and negatively affects aspects of life such as school, work and relationships.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems and everybody’s experience of it is individual. Anxiety is our natural reaction to danger - a primal survival mechanism. It causes adrenaline to be released into the bloodstream and produces a myriad of physical changes designed to protect us - the ‘fight or flight’ response. This response worked well when people lived in caves and had to defend themselves against wild animals; and is vital in modern day life-threatening situations. It’s less helpful, however, when starting a new job, sitting an exam, or travelling on public transport, for example. In these situations, there isn’t an actual threat, but it’s perceived as one because of the person’s thoughts and feelings about it.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of anxiety vary hugely, from regularly feeling unsettled, to incessant worrying, to experiencing debilitating panic attacks. The physical effects, such as rapid heart rate, sweating, nausea, muscle aches and pains can be as frightening as the source of anxiety. This can create a vicious circle. Psychological symptoms can include: • Unrelenting worry about past events or ‘worst case scenarios’ • Loss of memory and concentration • Anger and impatience
• Repetitive thoughts • Overwhelming fearfulness As a result, we may avoid particular situations, places and people. This can compromise relationships and employment, lead to risky behaviour and affect school or college attendance and exam success.
How can counselling help?
Increasingly in my work with adolescents and adults, anxiety is the main presenting issue. An important first step in my work as a counsellor is to reassure people that they are not alone. There is plenty of help that can be given and self-help techniques that can be learnt to reduce symptoms and bring about positive changes. In a safe and confidential setting, I can help people learn to: • Recognise their anxiety triggers and why they exist • Explore and challenge thoughts about themselves and the world around them • Develop skills and coping strategies to manage and reduce symptoms • Gradually confront the fears which feed the anxiety Sessions are tailored to suit the individual, their needs and what they would like to achieve from the counselling experience. Hannah is an experienced counsellor & psychotherapist, private practitioner; Counsellor for Heads Together, Positive Autism Support and Training (PAST) and Happy Healthy Me.

DISCOVERY
Ted Macauley test drives the Land Rover Discovery, and lets us know what it has to offer....
SPECIFICATION: The 3.0 SDVG SE.Twin turbos. Fuel; Diesel. BHP 256. MPG 35.3. Speed 112mph 0-60 in 8.8 secs. Price £41,600.
T
he welcome news that fines and punishments for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving are to be upped to £200 with a six points penalty, still falls well short of a legal hit serious enough to put a stop to the life-threatening stupidity, at least to my mind and many others,. And here I speak from experience, after a narrow…very narrow…escape when a woman, quite clearly steering one-handed and animatedly blabbing on her mobile, recklessly jumped the traffic lights into Esher’s high street in her BMW as I moved, luckily slowly, on green. She missed me by fractions and only because I spotted her at the last minute and braked to a standstill. How I was not walloped was little short of a miracle. And she didn’t even glance in my direction. Mind you, she might well have come off worst - deservedly. At a crunch, her transport would have been no match for mine: she would have been seriously outclassed, bantam versus heavyweight. I was sitting in a veritable tank of a car,
a Land Rover Discovery, an enormously robust, tall and sturdy vehicle designed to cope with estate managers’ bumpy, bouncy and chassis-testing journeys over rough terrain, and yet at the same time to offer an unsurpassed comfort level and feeling of safety. It was upgraded about two years ago and still fits admirably into the bracket of off-roaders quite capable of carrying its seven-seater passenger load in its capacious and comfy inside around town and on the school runs. Driving is a treat, with its loftiness offering all-round visibility and its eight speed automatic gearing silkily smooth. With the vast improvements made by Land Rover to its suspension system over the passing years, and in answer to the pleas of its buyers, the Discovery makes light work of the most demanding and challenging ground. That’s all helped by a clever Terrain Response button which has useful icons to give the driver the option of suitable 4x4 settings. Inside too, all the control switches and clickers, pushers and pullers have high visibility and a

simplicity and ease of use that lessens the burden for whoever is behind the wheel. And just to take your mind off the racket of the school-bound kids packed noisily into the pew-like seats, there is an all-round sound stereo system of superb quality. Kerbside, the Discovery‘s presence is one of height, weight and practicality, with a steadfastness that is a solid advantage when you are looking for a stolid safety for you and yours on the move. Economic? Er….well, maybe not quite the value for money on that front, but helped by an automatic stop-start facility that does offer some fuel-saving to ease the burden on the wallet and purse. Overall, and with its vital surround-view cameras to aid parking, the Discovery fits most of the requirements demanded of an all-rounder when you are looking for capability combined with comfort and top-class safety. That brainless woman, whose nearmiss could easily have been a disaster, is lucky to have escaped bumping into my veritable armoured car…

PLANT
VA R I E G A T I O N Look at your Christmas pudding and consider for a moment that at least four of its main ingredients are highly prized in ancient history and have journeyed many thousands of miles for your delectation! I’m talking about cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger.
C
innamon Cinnamon is the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum in the laurel family, native to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Malabar Coast and Burma. It was imported to Egypt as early as 2000 BC. The tree is grown for two years and then all stems are cut to ground level. These cut stems must be processed immediately after harvesting while the inner bark is still wet, allowing it to curl and be cut into those ‘quills’ that we readily recognize. Nutmeg The tropical nutmeg tree is unusual, as it gives us two distinct spices from the same plant, nutmeg and mace. Nutmeg is the seed, roughly egg shaped and weighing around 5-10g when dried. Mace is the dried, lacy, reddish covering or aril of the seed. The tree must be 10 years old before harvesting starts, and the trees reach full production after 20 years. Nutmeg is known to have been a prized and costly spice in European medieval cuisine as a flavouring, medicinal and preservative agent.
In Elizabethan times, nutmeg was believed to ward off the plague, and as a result, demand increased and its price skyrocketed. Cloves These are the unopened flower buds of a cultivated tree in the myrtle family. The earliest references to cloves are in ancient Chinese literature. Courtiers and officers of state were required to have a few cloves in their mouths when addressing the Emperor to keep their breath sweet. At the height of the spice trade, sailors whiled away the hours by making model boats out of cloves.. Go to Museum Number 1 in Kew Gardens to see an amazing clove
model boat given to Kew in 1845. It had been bought in the Moluccas at a cost of 6 shillings and 8 pence. Ginger This familiar root comes from an herbaceous perennial and is one of the oldest and most important spices cultivated in Asia for more than 3,000 years. The rhizomes were easy to transport and so ginger was the first oriental spice to be widely introduced elsewhere, arriving in Europe in the 1st century AD. The rhizome is lifted and immediately scalded and scraped to kill it to prevent it sprouting. Even today, its classic warming qualities are frequently used to calm digestive disorders.

YOUR BLESSINGS...
Like many children, I grew up with exhortations to be grateful, but they were often more of an admonition than a celebration. Be grateful when I’d just been told I couldn’t have what I’d asked for? How was that meant to work??
F
ortunately, I’ve learned a bit about gratitude over the years. Recently, I experienced a situation where an organisation’s errors could have led to significant financial cost and great inconvenience for me. I felt so grateful when it was sorted out, it was as though I’d been given a huge gift. In reality, I was exactly where I’d been a few days before, but it felt so good to be there and not where I might have been had things not been resolved. Gratitude filled me up and kept me buoyed up all day. In the past, I might have been in a different state, one focusing on the irritation that it shouldn’t have been like that in the first place, that someone had been wrong or inefficient or unfair. The situation outside me is the same in both states, but inside, I am living in different worlds. My old inner experience feels hard, betrayed by the world and as though something has been taken away (even though technically it hasn’t), while my new inner experience feels warm, as though the world is supporting me and I have gained something (even though technically I haven’t).
Creating our own world
From the old inner world, chances are I wouldn’t have felt inclined to help anyone else because I would still be annoyed about what happened and would not trust the world to be fair. I would probably have taken my anger into the next things I did, and possibly dumped it on the people I cared most about. From my new inner world, I can give freely to people around me, enjoy the rest of my day and create more positive situations.
Be grateful

It can change your life. Seriously. Each night, or morning, or once a week (whatever works for you), think through your day and remember three people or events or things, big or small, that you’re grateful for. Really feel grateful - it’s not the words that count, it’s the emotion that goes with them. You could journal them, or reflect on them and why they made a difference and how. You could collect small notes of gratitude in a gratitude jar and look at them at the end of the year. You could write a letter of thanks. It’s good for you. And studies show that the benefits last. With gratitude to the many who have shown me kindness this year,
Sonia Duggan CP CC ACC
