From the Editor Happy New Year, Happy Valentine’s Day Happy Pancake Day Happy Leap Year too...
What a busy month it’s going to be, and one day longer too! As I write this, the predicted overnight temperature is -4 degrees! So far this year, it’s been extremely mild, extremely wet and now extremely cold and we’re only a few weeks in. Good old British weather, it keeps us on our toes, I guess. We welcome a new Q & A feature, starting next month, from Bruce at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, so please do email in with your canine questions, see page 10 for details. I’m looking forward to reading this new feature over the coming months. Competition time again too, and up for grabs is a delightful children’s storybook, ‘Cinnamon and the Bat People’, by Cookie Thomas (no relation!) This lovely story is aimed at the 9 years and above age range. We will announce the winners in the March magazine. Info within, good luck to all who enter. Tuesday 9th Feb is Pancake Day, so we have included a lovely Waitrose recipe to brighten up your day. Pancakes are always a favourite in my house and a wonderful breakfast option too. Everyone here enjoys cooking their own! In addition to all this, you’ll find our normal regular features inside, plus a whole selection of other bits and bobs. I hope you enjoy exploring our pages. That’s enough from me for now, so I’ll sign off. I wish you all a great month,

A wonderful service was held at St James before Christmas under the auspices of the Alzheimer’s Society for those with dementia and their carers - but all were welcome and there was a congregation of 80. With Christmas approaching, St James never looked better and the service was warmly conducted by Rev’d Theresa Ricketts. There were four readings which covered the Christmas story, interspersed with favourite carols Once In Royal David’s City, In The Bleak Midwinter, The Angel Gabriel, Away In A Manger, While Shepherds Watched

On Dismissal, everyone enjoyed some social time, with all manner of tea and cakes at the back of the church to the accompaniment of Mike Woods, organist for the service, who played a selection of Christmas numbers, such as Winter Wonderland, White Christmas and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. It was a great success. The next “ALL OUR YESTERDAYS” service will be held on WEDNESDAY 2ND MARCH – so do make a note in your diary.

DON’T FORGET THEIR TEETH A NEW YEAR AND A NEW START.
Most of us will have spent January setting New Year’s resolutions, with a focus on health and fitness for us and our dogs. And while this is commendable, an area of dog well-being that is often neglected is their teeth. My own dog recently suffered from a cracked canine tooth which led to a visit to a veterinarian dental specialist and a few home truths. Like us, dogs should have their teeth brushed daily to protect and prolong them and help with the notorious ‘dog breath’ with which we dog owners are all too familiar! But it’s not all about fancy toothpaste and top-of-therange toothbrushes, it’s simply about frequency. In fact, brushing your dog’s teeth daily with just water will be more effective than a weekly or monthly session with an expensive toothpaste. Yes, really. So, when you’re brushing your teeth each day, please remember to do your dogs too: think regular, not random. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. We are delighted to introduce a new feature from Bruce’s Doggy Day Care..

I was delighted to receive a call recently from a radio producer asking if I’d be available to interview The Corrs. “Haven’t they split up?” I wondered, but as the violinplaying vocalist Sharon told me “The Corrs never ended. Because even when we’re not in the band, we’re still the Corrs”. Sharon, who now lives in Andorra, has enjoyed a fair amount of success as a solo performer, but is delighted to be back in the limelight with her brother Jim and sisters Andrea and Caroline. They recently played in front of over 50,000 fans in Hyde Park and have just released a great new album, White Light, which is their first in ten years. As a group, they’ve sold in excess of 40 million albums, so when multi-instrumentalist Jim says “I have no doubt that this is our best record yet”, it’s worth checking out. Jim went on to claim that “the best of all of us is in this music”. At the heart of White Light lies the tragic loss of their father, Gerry, who motivated, inspired and supported the band from childhood. When he was suddenly taken ill in Dublin, the group supported him in hospital and later played at his funeral. Caroline said that it was an incredibly emotional time for them, and when they played at his funeral, it marked the first time they’d played together for 13 years. Andrea admitted that the experience brought them closer together because they were the only ones that have had this shared history and shared loss. Andrea went on to tell me that the album is certainly not a sombre affair. “There is defiance in the record rather than melancholy”. Andrea went on to say that there is a life-affirming feeling in the music, “bring it on, we can deal with it, because we’re here now and we have to”. To celebrate the release of White Light, they’re embarking on an 8 date UK tour in January and will play the O2 on Saturday, January 23rd . Lets’ hope that, in this case, the band that plays together stays together.

ovember was an exciting and truly historic month for the Lower Years’ pupils and staff of St George’s Junior School, Weybridge, as the doors to their amazing new building called ‘The Ark’ - opened. Imaginatively built and brightly decorated throughout, The Ark provides 240 girls and boys in the Lower Years with a range of modern learning facilities, including animal-themed classrooms, cleverly designed resource areas, a dedicated IT suite, a new ‘Rainbow Room’ for assemblies and various outdoor learning spaces, as well as a living grass ‘sedum’ roof to help the building blend into its surroundings. Friday 23 November saw the boys and girls in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 helping to box up their belongings and going ‘on the move’ into their new classrooms. Awe and wonder filled their faces as they took their first tours around the new building, which they have watched gradually come to life over the last year. Lessons started the following Monday, and over recent days, the children have been enjoying the many benefits

of their new surroundings. The response so far has been incredibly positive from pupils and staff alike, and there is a collective confidence that The Ark will provide a fun and fulfilling learning environment in which current and future generations of Georgians can thrive. Referring to the new interactive whiteboards which are one of the features of the new classrooms, Year 1 pupil Beth said: “My favourite thing about The Ark is the big screen in my classroom, because we can draw patterns on it”, while her classmate Thomas said that he liked “the beautiful carpet and the automatic doors”. When asked what he liked best about it, Reception pupil Oliver was stumped. “I can’t choose my favourite thing about The Ark because it’s so cool!” he said. Speaking this week, Junior School Headmaster, Antony Hudson, said: “The Ark is a very welcome addition to the facilities that the Junior School provides, and demonstrates just how vitally important Early Years’ education is. The children love ‘coming home to school’ each day and they are already making the most of their new surroundings!”

Marie Curie is calling for more volunteers to help them in 2016 by signing up to collect at one of the 100 collections across Surrey. Most shifts are for 2 hours and it’s a great thing to do with a friend or family member, as most places allow two people to collect at a time. Dogs are also welcome! The first is the blue Himalayan poppy, Mecanopsis betonicifolia. It’s a wonderful blue colour and no one could dispute that, but allegedly a rather tricky plant to grow here in the South of England. Should you wish to try, remember that it will be happiest in a cool damp atmosphere, with plenty of moisture in the summer, but kept relatively dry in the summer. Think ‘Himalayan’ and try and emulate those conditions as possible - actually, Scotland might be closer to home. A National Trust head gardener once told me that the only way that he could keep blue poppies safe was right at the back of a border - that way, he said, and I quote, ‘little old ladies with their scissors found it more difficult to reach’. Oddly, the second plant heralded as a blue champion was the humble forget-me-not (Myosotis alpestris) - as difficult to suppress as getting the blue poppy to grow. Once you have one little forget-me-not in your garden, it’s an open invitation for it to fling its seed hither and thither, and not necessarily where you would have planned. One ancient forget-me-not story is that this flower begged Adam and Eve not to forget it as they were leaving the Garden of Eden;

there are others, but the plant is generally a symbol of faithful love and memories. If we look at the colour blue itself, it’s Nature’s colour for water and sky, but rarely found in fruit and vegetables. However, I think it’s interesting to note that 53% of the flags in the world contain the colour blue. Also, blue is apparently the most commonly used colour in corporate identity, and aristocrats are said to have blue blood. But blue does funny things with your eye, and this is important to appreciate when planting blue in the garden. Blue is sharply refracted by your eye and this causes the lens to flatten and to push the blue image backwards. We then perceive that blue areas are receding and appear smaller; this means that if you put a blue plant at the bottom of the garden, it could visibly ‘disappear’. For maximum impact, you need to plant blue (and very trendy) lovelies closer to the house so that you can enjoy them for their amazing brilliance! Valerie is a chartered horticulturist. She helps you develop your own garden action plan to ensure the best possible results for all of your plants. www.auntieplanty.co.uk © 2016 Valerie McBride-Munro

ON NEW EQUIPMENT FOR THE PLAY AREA IN CHURCHFIELDS RECREATION GROUNDS IN WEYBRIDGE Elmbridge Borough Council is planning to redevelop the play area in Churchfields Recreation Ground, Weybridge, and needs your help to design a new space where children can make the most of the new equipment in place. Churchfields Recreation Ground is popular with local families, and the play area attracts many children of all ages. With pieces of equipment in need of replacement after many years’ use, the time has come to look at upgrading the play area. This will offer children and their families a wider choice of equipment that will encourage imaginative, innovative and stimulating play opportunities. Councillor Mary Sheldon, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture, said, “Our aim is to create an area where
young children can play safely and happily. As well as being a source of fun and enjoyment for children and their parents or carers, the new equipment will be a valued part of the local environment. This is why your views and those of your children are so important to help us plan for the new playground. Please take part in the survey to tell us what type of equipment you want to see there. Please also encourage your friends to complete the survey - we really do want as much feedback as possible”. The online survey can be found at www.elmbridge.gov. uk/leisure and closes on 8 February. It includes only a few questions, so should only take a short time to fill in. For more information, call 01372 474568 or email leisure@elmbridge.gov.uk

PEUGEOT A R R E V I E W
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW PEUGEOT 308 GTi HATCHBACK
Looks, as the old saying goes, can be deceptive. And that could not be more apposite an adage than when applied to Peugeot’s 308 GTi Hatchback, the freshly-arrived French baby, devoid of teething problems. Wow! C’est magnifique! It may not revel in eye-poppingly spectacular kerb-appeal but, cor blimey, it is a rewarding experience from the moment you ease your derrière onto its bum-hugger seats in this ever-so-comfy hatchback and give it some stick. The response, especially if you really go for it, is a breathtaker reminiscent of any robust two-seater sports car shaped and built for performance and agility. The 308, outwardly a car with a familyouting/school-run appearance, and not at all threatening or looking like an open invitation for roadside speed cameras or traffic cops, is a reversion to fine tradition for the Gallic car maker. Remember the rather excellent 205s of the 80s, the transport for yuppies who yearned for performance without having the lolly to pay for a sporty flyer? Well, this latest five-door, low-slung presentation is a motor of that level of earlier excellence, expertise and
excitement, a recovery of oooomph and zip, and a surefire fightback on the extensive hot-hatch battleground. If I am coming across as overenthusiastic or as a suspect fan or victim of the Peugeot publicity machine, I apologise, but nothing could be further from the truth. My assessment is based solidly on a week of open and honest admiration for a car that gave me back all I asked of it and more. The speedo’s top end figure is 155mph - and I would guess it would reach into that promise if our road rules did not forbid such pace. As it is, it is electronically restricted, and its burst of relentless energy must remain a distant dream for the would-be racers. Whether you are skirting around town or streaking up our motorways, the 1.6-litre turbo-charged engine is your humble servant, obeying whatever heavy demands or otherwise that you impose upon it.The power seems to come from nowhere when you hoof it. In the deceptively roomy cabin, sport bucket seats, like home comforts, cope cosily with the longest treks, and the clutter-free dashboard with its multitasking colour touch-screen serves up all
the essential info. GTi trimmings abound, 19inch lightweight alloy wheels with low profile tyres, red-painted brake calipers with 380mm front discs, twin exhausts, and a GTi grrrrille. Throw in a reversing camera, parking sensors front and rear, cruise control, automatic folding door mirrors and an electric handbrake, and you are hard-pressed to think what else you might need. And the sheer generosity of deceptive space in the boot left Trophy Wife, an eager packer of a frock wardrobe fit for three, in a state of wideeyed gratitude as we headed for a partyfilled weekend. I am told that, when the hitherto heroic 205Gti was on offer in the UK from 1985 to 1994, it hit sales levels of 66,226. If that figure, despite opposition from, say, the Honda Civic Type R and the Seat Leon Cupra, is not beaten, then sacré bleu, buyers don’t know what they are missing. A real Purr-geot treat. The car that got the cream. Oh là là... Specification: Peugeot 308 GTi Hatchback. Engine 1.6T, 1598cc. BHP 2897. Max speed 155mph. 0-62 in 6.O secs. MPG 47. Price £28,155.

he hospice buildings are at the heart of the care which Woking & Sam Beare Hospices provide across Surrey. A brand new hospice premise is being built in Woking and the existing premises at Sam Beare Hospice redeveloped, and this year, the charity is launching an appeal to raise funds for the developments. Construction is well under way, and in autumn last year, the Mayor of Woking, Councillor Derek McCrum, and Councillor John Kingsbury, Leader of Woking Borough Council, paid a visit to the site to officially mark the commencement of building works. In Woking, a former office block on Goldsworth Park estate is being transformed into a state-of-theart 20-bedded Hospice and Well-being Centre for the provision of in-patient care, a wide range of therapies, treatments, counselling and day care activities. Once the build on Goldsworth Park is complete, the existing premises at Sam Beare Hospice in Weybridge will be reconfigured to house a new Wellbeing Centre, as well as facilities for the therapies team and community nurses. With more than 70% of the care offered being provided in patients’ own homes, the hospice buildings are an invaluable base for the growing community nursing teams to work from, as they serve residents as far away

as North Guildford, Egham and Virginia Water. The improved facilities will greatly help them with the incredible work they do for so many people across the whole of Surrey. For the past 20 years, Woking & Sam Beare Hospices have been providing care and support at one of the most important times in the lives of its patients and their families. Staff at both hospices are really excited about what potential the new facilities will have in order to provide even better services to patients and their families, all of which will remain completely free of charge. Thanks to support from local funders, businesses, trusts and foundations, we have been able to raise the first 60% of the project costs and begin to build our new hospice in Woking. This leaves us with £3.4million still to find and that is the amount of money we are asking the community to help us raise. The appeal is being launched in February 2016 in Woking and Weybridge town centres, when the public will be able to learn more about Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ vision for developing hospice care throughout Surrey. You can find out about ways to get involved with the appeal by going online to www.wsbhospices.co.uk or call 01483 881752 and ask for the Marketing Department.

t’s so easy to give up at the first hurdle, to decide “I’m hopeless at sticking to my word/I didn’t want to do the stupid thing anyway/I broke my resolution, so there’s no point in going on with it – I know I’ll just break it again.” It can be easier to give up straight away and label ourselves as losers than to forgive ourselves for taking our eye off the ball once or twice and to bounce back more determined than ever.
To do or not to do?
Don’t give up
Know thyself Some of us need big, life-changing goals and enjoy pushing ourselves past our limits. And some of us like to take things more gently: we know that if we change just 2%, in time we will have made huge changes. Neither way is right, neither is wrong. We just need to find the way that works for us. And start.
From time to time, we all get things wrong/slip up/ forget/give in to weakness/feel fed up and don’t want to bother. If we learn what it is that takes us away from our intended goal, we can use that knowledge to help us succeed the next time. Failure doesn’t need to lead to defeat. Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company and pioneer of the assembly line technique of mass production, said “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” So, stop and figure out what’s going on. What? Did you give yourself a resolution you don’t really care about? Ditch it! Choose to do something that you do care about. Why? Do you want to achieve your goal but feel unmotivated? Ask yourself “Why is it important to me?” Will it improve your health or fitness? Your relationships? Your finances? Your chances of success in life? What will it give you to achieve your goal? How? Find another way to achieve the same result. Maybe you hate going to the gym but would love to go swimming with a friend.
Does your resolution involve doing something (exercise, studying, drinking more water) or not doing something (driving or taking the bus when you can walk, wasting time, eating junk food)? Brainstorm ways that can help you. If you need to do something new, what are the steps involved? Break it down until you come to one small thing you can easily do, and do it until that thing becomes a habit. Then move on to the next step.
Keep going

NEW YEAR’S
HONOUR & SMASHED RECORDS THOUSANDS DESCEND ON HISTORIC SITE FOR RECORD-BREAKING CLASSIC START TO 2016!
T
he January Sales were practically nonexistent for anyone within driving distance of Brooklands Museum on January 1st. Over 7,000 people visited during the day from as far afield as Ormskirk in the north and Bournemouth in the south, with more than 1,500 classic vehicles making the annual pilgrimage to the historic setting in Weybridge, Surrey, to see in the New Year. The driving force of this unique event at the historic 32-acre site is inclusion: the beautiful, the ugly, the celebrated and the forgotten share equal billing at what is believed to be the UK’s largest January 1st classic gathering. And it isn’t hard to see why when you wander through row after row of family saloons, pre-war sports and touring cars, motorcycles, American hot rods and sixties icons, all packed onto the picturesque setting. Among the highlights were some heavy commercials, like the ‘cabover’ Chevrolet truck in a striking art deco style, a 2.5ltr Riley drophead and a very original Fiat 131 rally car recalling its heyday in the 1970s. Oddities ranged from a Citroen AMI6 with period Airstreamstyle caravan in tow, a pre-war Renault and an AEC WWI-era truck in combat finish. A Nash Metropolitan in two-tone raspberry and cream caused a stir, as did a beautifully restored rare RHD Jaguar XK120 fixed head

coupé in teal blue. Clubs represented included Rover P5 Owners, Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts, Porsche and Alvis Owners, and a gaggle of 1960s Minis from a number of clubs. As part of the Alvis OC display on the Hangar apron, one could see a 1927 1250 Alvista Saloon with a fabric body and a 12/60TK 2-seater sports Beetleback from 1931. On the Finishing Straight behind the Hangar, VW Camper Vans, a green Jensen Interceptor 3, Austin Healey 3000 MkIII from 1964 and a Rover 3500 happily shared the same concrete, whilst the crowds peered inside, chatted and took pictures. The swarms of eager visitors also filled all the exhibition areas to see the Museum’s own collections of classic racing cars, aircraft and motorcycles. The 4D Theatre and Concorde ran their respective virtual experiences, and the café and barbecue outlets just about kept up with the demand for hot food and drinks. Blessed with a cold but dry and crisp climate, the day heralds a fantastic start to the Museum’s calendar of events that run throughout the year. Brooklands Museum is open from 10am - 4pm (5pm in summer) every day, apart from a few days at Christmas. Admission is £11 for adults, £10 for seniors, £6 for children (aged 5 – 16) and just £30 for a family ticket. www.brooklandsmuseum.com | 01932 857 381
