What a mixed bag of weather to start this decade! Such extremes reported from around the Globe. At the time of writing, Australia are awaiting a much needed ‘5 day rain storm’ which hopefully will extinguish the dreadful bush fires. What an awful time they have been having, it makes me stop and think before I complain about our damp weather here. A few muddy dog towels is really nothing to worry about ! This month we hear from Rebecca Webb who shares some information with us about Girlguiding in Surrey East; they are looking for inspirational leaders so do get in touch if you are interested in getting involved. There are many options, and groups include Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers to cater for a wide array of ages… We have a lovely pussy cat in need of a loving home by the name of Benji - see our Cat’s Protection page - let’s get Benji his forever home ! Local group ‘Just Good Friends’ will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year! This is a lovely club for the unattached, over 60’s. They offer a great selection of events and activities. Well worth a look. Weybridge Male Voice Choir have our centre pages this month, they are back in action shortly, possible date for you diary? Finally, a fabulous Book Fair is taking place in Epsom soon, a little drive away I know, but if you enjoy your books, I am sure it will be worth it! Details on page 30. Wishing you all a good month and a Happy Valentines Day on 14th! Best Regards,

Ros

HOME WANTED! Benji

Adorable Benji is around 7 yrs old. He came into our care as his owner passed away. Benji was traumatised when he first came to us but is now really beginning to settle and show his very sweet personality. He is quite shy so would benefit from an understanding owner prepared to give him some time and space. Once he gets to know you he is a very gentle cat who is really loving. He is long haired and loves to be brushed; he now greets his foster carer with a little meow and a kiss to say good morning! Benji needs to be the only pet in an adult household to give him the quiet and relaxed environment he is looking for. If you feel you can give Benji his well deserved forever home please call 0345 260 1387 or email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

Just Friends

JUST FRIENDS celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2019 with a special lunch last September at the Warren Lodge Hotel in Shepperton, and later a birthday party in October with a large 3 0 cake at the Ashley Park Hotel in Walton. A Christmas Lunch was also held at the Silvermere Inn on the Lake just before Christmas with a free initial drink to toast the club. All of which rounded off the 30th Anniversary celebrations very well. The club is for 60+ unattached people and was formed in 1989. It quickly grew in numbers and covered a wide area of Surrey. Over 700 people

have joined Just Friends in the last 30 years and some of the inaugural members are still active in the membership today. Many friendships have been formed and a recent talk highlighted the very varied events that members have enjoyed over the years. The club meets each month at the Ashley Park Hotel, Walton when the next month’s programme is issued. Members provide items for the programme which varies each month but can include parties, theatre visits, walks, pub and restaurant meals, summer croquet and winter Ten Pin Bowling, trips to London, Jazz evenings and quiz nights etc. The annual subscription is just £13 a year but prospective members are welcome to come to a few events before joining. New Member Welcomers are on hand to help new members get to know everyone. More information on Just Friends and how to contact the club can be found on our website: www.just-friends.co.uk.

MAKING YOUR MONEY

WORK HARDER. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

I had pitches at a couple of car boot sales to get rid of unwanted children’s clothes, toys and various other items in preparation for Christmas. I am a self-employed hairdresser and have to complete a tax return - will I also be taxed on the £350 I took at the car boot sales? Your income from hairdressing is taxed because you are running a trading business with a view to making a profit. Selling goods at car boot sales is potentially also trading income, however each case must be considered on its own merits. For somebody like yourself who has only sold their own unwanted second hand goods on a couple of occasions, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) would not deem there to be a trading activity so the income received would not need to be declared on a self-assessment tax return. As the income is not declared, relief for any associated expenses incurred (such as pitch fees and petrol/motor costs) cannot be claimed. On the other hand if somebody regularly attends car boot sales (for instance every month) with a view to making profits, HMRC will deem them to be trading and they would need to be registered as self-employed for tax and National Insurance purposes. However, HMRC have recently introduced a £1,000 allowance, whereby any trading business doesn’t have to register or declare income where it doesn’t exceed £1,000 in a year. If they earn above this then they will then need to become registered and declare the income. If this happens then they also get the choice whether they want to deduct the £1,000 allowance off their income or deduct actual expenses (whichever is greater) to arrive at their taxable profits for that year.

Q.

A. Can I claim legal fees chasing payments as a tax deduction?

I am considering taking legal action to recover a debt from a customer who has a history of not paying me. Therefore, can my solicitor’s fees and other legal costs be regarded as a legitimate business expenses for tax purposes and are there different procedures depending on the size of the debt? Legal and professional costs that a business incurs are allowable when they are wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the trade. Legal fees resulting from attempting to recover bad debts are deemed to be incurred for the purpose of the trade and are therefore considered to be allowable expenditure in establishing your business profit for the year. It should also be noted that where a bad debt relating to ordinary trade transactions with a specific customer is written off, that amount is also an allowable deduction. This contrasts with the rules for a general bad debt provision, which is not an allowable deduction for tax purposes. So yes, the legal fees incurred in respect of that debt recovery are allowable as a deduction for tax purposes and you get an allowable deduction in the accounts for the bad debt itself, as the debt relates to a specific customer.

Kia XCEED CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

The motor car market is awash with bargains galore, and yet another wee treat has arrived to excite those who enjoy being seen in the latest offering. It is Kia’s brand new Xceed - a funky looking SUV, a sporting crossover and a distinct challenger to reigning rivals without it breaking the bank or failing to give value for your lolly. The Korean car makers are so confident they have designed a winner with stamina as well as style, they back their invasion on to the SUV scene with a staggering, unrivalled and unprecedented 100,000 mile/seven year warranty. Wow wee!!! In a recent reliability survey Kia finished sixth out of 31 manufacturers - just behind Toyota, but better than Skoda and streets ahead of Ford and Volkswagen, with that record breaking warranty - the best on any car. So what do you get for your hard-earned? A real treat in my humble opinion...a kerbside beauty that is both a pleasure to walk up to and to drive, whether around town or on longer motorway journeys, both of which it manages with panache and economy with 50-odd plus miles to the gallon. It revels in a softer setting with clever dampers, but

14 Looklocal Magazine - February 2020

loses nothing in its all-round ability to cope with bumps or silky smooth surfaces, while at the same time keeping drivers and passengers nice and comfy with an infotainment system that is a joy to listen to — the product of a treasure of a touch screen. The best bargain buy I reckon is the 1.0-litre petrol engined model with its low CO2 emissions and is cheaper to purchase than the 1.6 litre diesel. And that is welcome news for private buyers and company car users alike. Altogether the Xceed is powered by three engines - two petrol, one diesel, all six speed. The 1.6 litre diesel has a bit more mid range attitude, but it is slower in outright speed than its kin. Only high mileage drivers seeking to maximise on economy could be justified in paying its price premium. For me it ticks all the boxes and in its class, probably the toughest and most testing branch of motoring, the latest Kia is a sure fire winner. XCEEDingly good in fact.... My favourite: The XCEED 1.6 CRDI3. Engine 1.6 litre. Four cylinders.134 Bhp. Six speed. 0-60mph in 10.2 secs.Top speed 122mpg. Mpg 64.2. Price £25,345.

Gardening with Auntie Planty SNOWDROPS

There is no more welcome sight at the end of those cold and wet days of winter than to see the tiny tips of snowdrop leaves poking through the soil. Spring is just around the corner. If you don’t have any of your own, why not visit to one of the gardens which will be opening to the public with The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) from January through to March. (https://ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/ snowdrop-gardens/) Snowdrops can arrive looking in perfect condition because their leaf tips are specially strengthened –they literally bore their way through frozen soil. If you think that you are getting fewer flowers than last year, then it’s time to think about thinning out the overcrowded clumps. Unlike most other bulbs, snowdrops can be lifted when they are still in full leaf. Daffodils Although some varieties of daffodils are early flowerers, others may wait until well into April to show their faces. Like all spring bulbs, these should have been planted in the garden last autumn. But if you missed that particular boat, worry not: why not go to your favourite garden centre, buy up some miniature daffodils in pots (Tete a Tete will do just fine) and then bury them, pot and all,. No-one will ever know! Dying leaves It is extremely important for daffodil leaves to be allowed to die off naturally, as this is nature’s way of replenishing the store cupboard for the following year’s

18 Looklocal Magazine - February 2020

floral performance. There can be no escaping the fact that daffodils in their final days do look exceedingly scruffy. Do not be tempted to do a quick hair-cut with scissors; all you will succeed in doing is condemn the bulbs to a starvation diet, and next year your daffodils may end up with empty flower buds – or put another way, they will be blind. Removing the dead flowers is OK, but each plant will need at least 4 weeks for their leaves to wither, and then you can cut them off at ground level. You may see some gardeners valiantly tying their daffodil leaves into neat bundles; this is also a dreadful thing to do as it garrottes the supply of food, and you may as well have used the scissors in the first place! Feeding Bulbs that are to stay in the ground from year to year can be given a feed, and the critical time for doing is between the time when the flowers first appear and when all the leaves are brown. Any later than this, and your efforts will be wasted. Auntie Planty is a chartered horticulturist. As Auntie Planty she offers gardening master-classes in your own garden. www.auntieplanty.co.uk © 2020 Valerie McBride-Munro

Weybridge Male Voice Choir

Spring Concert CATHOLIC CHURCH OF CHRIST, PRINCE OF PEACE, PORTMORE WAY, WEYBRIDGE KT13 8JD

FRIDAY 6TH MARCH 2020 AT 7.30PM Our Spring Concert is now much earlier in the year; we’ll all be celebrating the start of Spring in March! And it’s on a Friday evening. We’ll be back at our traditional and well-loved venue of the Catholic Church, Christ Prince of Peace, with its beautiful atmosphere and wonderful acoustics. The choir recently had a very successful sell-out Christmas Concert, which sent our audience out knowing that they had well and truly started their Christmas celebrations. This Spring concert will be our first big concert of 2020 and it will feature a great variety of pieces to entertain and move you. For the guest spots for this concert, we are delighted to welcome pianists Hannah Stanley and Gareth Giles for both solo and duet performances. Hannah and Gareth are both wonderful long term friends of the choir. They are probably well- known to many of our audience for their brilliant virtuoso performances in a wide variety of styles including jazz, cocktail, show tunes, ballads and light classical. If you’ve heard Hannah and Gareth before, you will know you are in for a real treat! As always, the choir’s varied programme has something for everyone with many modern classics and several pieces new to our repertoire, together with more traditional male voice choir pieces including songs

20 Looklocal Magazine - February 2020

from musical shows, spirituals, Welsh hymns and traditional songs. All this sung in 4-part harmony with that wonderful solid sound from the very quiet and unaccompanied to stirring crescendos. As a flavour of what you can expect, here are some of the newer pieces in our repertoire that we are certain to be performing: The iconic Top ten 1983 hit- ‘Africa’ by Toto; ‘Run’, the Snow Patrol 2004 alternative rock hit; Queen’s Freddie Mercury’s 1976 hit ‘Somebody to Love’; Elvis’s 60’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’; Gershwin’s ‘Fascinating Rhythm’, and Glen Miller’s big band piece ‘In the Mood’; and as a complete contrast a wonderful haunting a cappella setting of Tennyson’s famous poem ‘Crossing the Bar’. We promise to send you home delighted with your evening with us and with our guests Hannah and Gareth. Our retiring collection will be for Elmbridge Rentstart, who support local people who are homeless or vulnerably housed. Each year they house and support around 150 people and help them move on with their lives. This is a great and successful local charity that needs and deserves all our support. Inspiration!

Inside Out Thinking Have you ever been annoyed by something or someone, and lived out the next few hours or days from that annoyed feeling? I used to believe that situations ‘out there’ created the circumstances of my life. And my reactions to them affected my outlook on life, my relationships with those around me, and the possibilities I saw that determined my subsequent actions. That’s Outside In Thinking. Something outside us influences the way we see the world, and we’re stuck in that situation. Then I came across Inside Out Thinking.

have to listen to awful music that’s driving us crazy! We just wouldn’t do it. We’d change the music to something we enjoyed or turn it off for some peace and quiet. We can do the same with our thoughts. The thing is, many of us have a default way of looking at the world and an automatic emotional response, such as My partner is selfish / My boss is mean / Things never work out for me. We tune into those perspectives without even realizing we’re doing it, and end up having the same row / bad day at work / feelings of failure we’ve had a hundred times.

What’s that? I hear you ask. Inside Out Thinking was inspired by Sydney Banks back in 1973 and goes something like this: We feel our thinking, and it shapes our perceptions and creates our experience of life.

So what can we do instead? Become aware of our default way of thinking. Ask ourselves whether it’s enhancing or detracting from our experience of life. Choose a thought that feels better. Enjoy the new possibilities those better feelings lead to.

Things happen - that’s life. But we have the power to choose how to think about the event.

Happy New Thoughts,

Every thought gives rise to a feeling. In the past, if I felt annoyed, I hung on to that annoyance. It spoiled my day and limited my ability to feel affection and enjoy life. However, we can feel annoyed / angry / upset in the moment, decide we’d prefer to feel good, and let go of the emotion. We’re then able to enjoy the rest of our day. Either way, the ‘thing’ happened. But we can choose whether or not to give it the power to spoil our experience of life.

Sonia Duggan

An original emotion in response to any event sends different chemicals or hormones circulating around our system for around 90 seconds. The only reason we feel unpleasant emotions and bathe in those chemicals any longer than that is because we replay the scenario. That’s like hearing a music track we hate, repeatedly putting it on replay, and then complaining that we

tomato & spinach bucatini with prawns ingredients method 1 tbsp cold pressed rapeseed oil, plus extra to drizzle 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp double concentrated tomato purée 1 tsp Cooks’ Ingredients Wild Oregano 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 tsp clear honey 150g Waitrose & Partners No.1 Bucatini (or spaghetti) 300g baby spinach 150g pack Duchy Organic Cooked King Prawns 3 tbsp freshly grated parmigiano reggiano (Serves 2)

1. Heat the oil in a wide pan, then add the garlic. Sizzle for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the tomato purée and oregano and cook for 1 minute, or until the purée is turning burnished orange and smells sweet. Add the tomatoes, ½ a can of water and the honey; season. Simmer for 10-12 minutes until rich and thick. Taste; if it seems acidic, add a squeeze more honey. 2. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil, then add the pasta. Return to the boil, then cook for 10 minutes or until al dente. Drain, reserving a cup of the cooking water. Meanwhile, put the spinach in a large colander, pour over boiling water from the kettle until wilted, then rinse with cold water. Squeeze out the excess water and drain on kitchen paper. 3. Add the prawns and spinach to the pasta sauce, then simmer until warmed through. Toss the pasta into the sauce, along with 2 tbsp water to loosen, and ½ the grated cheese. Transfer to warmed pasta bowls; finish with a little more cheese, serving a crispy green salad alongside, if liked.

cooking tip For even more flavour, add a handful of pitted olives to the recipe as the sauce is simmering.
