to Summer

Welcome to our Summer issue of Look Local! The school holidays will soon be upon us and many of you will, I’m sure, be looking forward to some time off. Whether you are going away or staying local, I hope you have a great summer. If you’re intending to be around the local area during the summer months, there are a whole host of fabulous events to enjoy! We’ve packed as many into our pages this month as we possibly can and I hope you are able find at least one that takes your fancy! You could WIN a great prize this month; we are delighted to offer not 1 or 2 BUT 3 fabulous prizes in 3 very different competitions! • A family ticket for a day out at Chessington World of Adventures. • A really impressive hard-back book which would be treasured & enjoyed by any F1 fan. Formula 1 - The Knowledge - 2nd edition. • A family ticket to see a local production of Alice in Wonderland performed by the Immersion Theatre Group. We are also delighted to share news from the Churchfield Allotments; if you fancy growing your own fruit & veg but you don’t have the space to do so at home, this is a great option, why not investigate? I’m signing off now, but I do hope you all enjoy a great summer. I’m hoping for a sunny one as I am getting married at the end of July! With Best Regards,

Ros

ALLOTMENT GARDENING AT CHURCHFIELD ALLOTMENTS

A well kept secret in the middle of Weybridge is the Churchfield Allotments. Nestling just behind St. James’ Church is nine and a half acres of organically cultivated land bound by Molyneux Road, Melrose Road, Curzon Road and Churchfields recreation ground. Anyone, of any age, who is resident in the local area is entitled to take up a plot. There are no restrictions on applying for one - apart from a commitment to cultivate it - and no previous gardening experience is necessary. Just some of the benefits of cultivating an allotment are: · fresh, organic vegetables and flowers · healthy exercise coupled with fresh air, peace and tranquillity · low cost seeds and gardening supplies from our Trading Hut · personal satisfaction in seeing the fruits of your labour · the chance to meet a group of the friendliest people

8 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

you can imagine. Plots are available in varying sizes from small to very large to suit the amount of time each individual has available to cultivate them. You never know, you might even be the proud winner of our annual competition, awarded to those who cultivate and produce the widest range of fruit and vegetables on their plot of land, or to those whose plots show the most promise after less than a year of cultivation. If you feel tempted to have a go, or would like to find out more, we’d love to hear from you. Why not come along to our Open Afternoon on Sunday 14th July from 12-3pm, when we’ll be inviting the local community to come and enjoy a stroll around the allotments? Alternatively, please email info@ weybridgeallotments.org.uk or visit our Trading Hut at the main entrance to the allotments on Curzon Road. We’re open from 10am-12pm every weekend. www.facebook.com/weybridgeallotments/ www.weybridgeallotments.org.uk

MAKING YOUR MONEY

WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

Q. A.

I have been sent a letter telling me I need to submit my confirmation statement and I don’t know what this is. A company needs to file a confirmation statement to Companies House every year and pay the appropriate filing fee. If you need to file an amended statement there will be no further charge, you only pay the fee once a year. Your first confirmation statement will be due a year from incorporation and then annually thereafter or 12 months from any amended statements filed. You have 14 days to file the statement from the due date. The confirmation statement shows general information about the company such as company directors, secretary, registered office address, shareholders, share capital and people with significant control. You must file a confirmation statement even if the company is dormant. Just started a business and have registered for VAT – but I had to make several purchases before the business actually started, so am I allowed to claim these? Yes you can providing the expenses were made for business purposes. These expenses will be treated as though they were incurred on the first day of trade and tax relief will be given where appropriate. VAT will also be able to be reclaimed on these business

Q. A.

expenses made prior to the date of VAT registration – the rules for this are different for goods and services. You can go back up to 4 years from the date of registration for VAT on goods you still have on hand or that have been used to make other goods you still have. It’s 6 months for services.

Q. A.

Does the medical insurance that I have provided to my staff have to be declared anywhere? As an employer you may need to report the medical benefit you provide your staff with on a P11D if it is not exempt. Circumstances where the benefit maybe exempt can be found here https://www.gov.uk/expenses-and-benefitsmedical-treatment/whats-exempt If you, as the employer are invoiced and pay the provider directly for the medical benefit for your staff then you will need to report it on form P11D and pay Class 1A NIC on the value. Class 1A is payable at 13.8% The reporting treatment maybe different if the employee is invoiced for the insurance but you the employer pays the provider or if you reimburse the employee for the costs. P11D’s and form P11D(b) need to be filed with HMRC by 6 July, following the tax year in which the benefit was received by your employee and, any Class 1A NIC owed on the benefit needs to be paid by 22 July (19 July if you pay by cheque). A medical benefit is just one of many benefits that may need to be reported to HMRC.

FORMULA ONE - THE KNOWLEDGE (SECOND EDITION)

Memory Lane, the pathway to personal history, can be a revelation of treasured moments, not always easily brought back to mind - and that’s when help, particularly from printed records, can be an absolute pleasure. From a personal point of view, that is what has happened to me in the form of a newly issued volume. Vast in its content, in the considerable and impressive shape of the tome, “Formula One - The Knowledge” 2nd Edition. In 544 pages, with 90 pictures, I have been captivated in recapturing my days as a world wandering F1 journalist. Writing on the thrill-a-minute grand prix world championship scene for the Daily Mirror when, at its most popular, the paper served five million readers a day. I revelled in shared lunches and dinners in far away places, in the one-to-one company of the likes of British legend Nigel Mansell, wonder-man Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Watson, John Surtees, and many, many more, Even Hollywood mega star Paul Newman, a committed car race fanatic and gifted driver, with whom I once spent a week. Many of them remain firm friends to this day. I hope you don’t think I am name dropping; they and their GPs were all in a very enjoyable day’s work for me. And, thanks to “The Knowledge” moments spent watching them race have all come flooding back and stirred forgotten and extra-special memories. I often disregard the publisher’s blurb, backing a book, but I agree with every single word of the support for this classic. And therefore, I shall give it an airing. Here goes.... And I quote: “The updated and extended 2nd edition of

this popular title is the most complete record of Formula 1 statistics ever published. More than 1200 sections on the drivers, the cars, the engines, the tyres and the circuits. Original ideas for analysis that won’t be found anywhere else. Performance records of every driver, every constructor and every engine make, to have taken part in F1. “Amazing coincidences, amusing anecdotes and many funny stories, as well as some serious ones. A summary of regulation changes since 1950, detailed insight into the variety of qualifying procedures throughout the years, a quick reference guide to every grand prix result. All the facts and figures you could ever want to know. “It is the only book ever to focus in such detail on Formula One records and to contain many new ideas for looking at Formula One. A new collection of carefully selected photographs depicting the history of Formula One. “This second edition by author David Hayhoe, has been entirely updated with three seasons of updated information. Apart from that, the content has been considerably extended with many sections re-designed featuring a complete new set of images.” So there! And I could not agree more. Veloce Publishing, as respected a publisher of motorsport books and records as you could find anywhere in the world, has done a fab job. It is priced at £55 and worth every penny.

Gardening with Auntie Planty PLANTS BY POST

With this year’s Chelsea Flower Show still a fresh memory, I was happy to receive a large cardboard box this morning containing two pots of Sedum takesimense ‘Atlantis’, the winner of the RHS Plant of the Year Award 2019. I haven’t bought too many plants by mail order as I have long held the memory of a precious parcel of Marmite arriving in Papua New Guinea, with its completely flat and ouzing wrapping. If this could happen to my must-have breakfast spread, I thought, what hope does a precious plant have! However, when the offer came to get my hands on this bright new plant, I just couldn’t resist. I am always on the lookout for plants that will fit into difficult corners of the garden and a dry shade must be one of the most problematic By the time that I had read that Sedum takesimense ‘Atlantis’ is an attractive, easy to grow, versatile and multifunctional plant I was hooked. The description continued that it forms 30cms high cushions of variegated foliage, topped with yellow flowers from June to September. The plants are described as robust and drought resistant, and the blooms are attractive to insect pollinators. And now I turned my attention to this winning plant’s foliage. A variegated plant is extremely useful for a number of reasons. First of all, if you feel that you have too many all-green plants in a group, then something with either white or yellow in its leaves will produce

24 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

a wonderful sparkle in the border, especially if it is in shade for part or most of the day. I’m always interested in how these new plants develop. Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting the renowned hybridiser of phormiums in New Zealand. All those lovely vibrant colours happened by chance as she was feeding the seeds of Phormium cookianum to her doves. Some of them got eaten, but some would germinate and one day instead of a rather boring olive green plant developing, an attractive green and yellow striped ‘sport’(natural mutation) was formed. This new sedum was discovered as a sport on a nursery on the banks of Lake Michigan by a grower called Dave Mackenzie, who specialises in plants for ground cover, green roofs and walls. How could you possibly imagine anything else for a hard working, attractive, new to the market, insect friendly, easy to grow international plant than giving it the accolade of the RHS Plant of the Year 2019? With a reputation like this, it won’t be long before ‘Atlantis’ appears in your local garden centre! Auntie Planty is a chartered horticulturist. She helps you develop your own garden Action Plan to ensure the best possible results for you and your plants. www.auntieplanty.co.uk © 2019 Valerie McBride-Munro

Inspiration!

Darn It! I recently threw out a whole pile of socks. Now, I don’t like waste and always prefer to give unwanted clothes to charity, but I couldn’t give these socks because they were wearing thin. I felt bad about that because they were good quality, expensive socks and it seemed such a shame to throw them out, but I knew darning them wasn’t even on my ‘To Do’ list, never mind anywhere near the top of it, and clearly wasn’t ever going to get done. (And yes, I know, who darns socks anyway?!) Every time I saw them they reminded me of what I hadn’t done and wasn’t going to do, which wasn’t a good feeling. There are other things I don’t get round to doing, and I’ve sort of … almost … stopped chastising myself about them because I know I can’t do everything. I still sometimes find that hectoring “You really should …” voice catching me unawares. But to beat myself up about things that, if I’m honest, I know I’m not likely to do seems futile and self-destructive, and I make a conscious effort to send it away. I find it much more useful to decide what’s important. What, if I do it, and do it well, would have the biggest positive impact on my life and the lives of others? I can prioritise those things, and if I still have time at the end of all that to darn socks, then great! But if I don’t, then darn it! I’m no longer going to feel bad, because the things that I have done will have been of greater benefit to me, my family, my clients and my world. It can be hard to say, “No” / “I won’t” / “I could, but I’m not going to” to things that we’re capable of doing. But

28 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

every time we choose to do one thing, whether we’re aware of it or not, we are simultaneously choosing NOT to do others. And if we don’t say “No” to the less important stuff, or at the very least, “Not right now”, they just end up on an ‘Oh My God Look At All The Things I’ve Got To Do!’ list that grows ever longer, is totally unrealistic, and stresses us out. Maybe creating a ‘Things I Would Do In An Ideal World But Probably Won’t Get Round To This Year’ list can help us to be more conscious about letting go gracefully. Activities can earn their place on our ‘To Do’ list by meeting whatever criteria we choose to place value on. And we can acknowledge that the rest are no longer a priority and stop feeling bad about them. Toodle-do

This September residents and visitors will have the chance to sample food and drink from around the borough at the free to enter, Elmbridge Food Festival at Painshill in Cobham. Taking place over two days, the Elmbridge Food Festival aims to showcase the very best culinary delights the area has to offer, as well as delighting visitors with music from local musicians and entertainment to keep the kids amused. There will also be a food and drink theatre with a varied selection of cooking demonstrations and all within the stunning surroundings of Painshill landscaped gardens in Cobham. Both Painshill and the Elmbridge Food Festival will be entirely free that weekend. Councillor Christine Elmer, Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Community Affairs, is delighted Elmbridge Borough Council is bringing this free event to residents: “On September 21 and 22 I would encourage all our residents to grab a picnic blanket and bring their

friends and family to Painshill for this free celebration of Elmbridge food and drink businesses. We are determined to support our businesses and this event is one of the many initiatives in place to ensure we continue to have a thriving economy in Elmbridge.” Paul Griffiths, Director, Painshill added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council to host their food festival here at Painshill. We are very much looking forward to welcoming lots of local food and drink businesses from our community as well as offering people in the area the chance to sample and purchase tastes of Elmbridge whilst experiencing our amazing 18th century landscape, where the walk is the work of art” Updates on the various food and drink businesses attending the festival will be available through our Twitter and Instagram accounts @elmbridgebc, on Facebook at ‘My Elmbridge’ and via our website elmbridge.gov.uk/foodfestival. Add the date to your diary and look out for the updates over the next few months.
