From the Editor Welcome to Look Local in June!

Oh no, it’s raining today! I’m not very happy about that! But the upside is that my patches of grass seed in the garden will grow now, hopefully. I know, I know, the plants and the ducks like the rain,

e asked our amazing community what more they wanted at this year’s Claygate Flower & Village Show, and we’ve now got even more to be excited about! • Claygate Tug Of War Competition - will be as much fun to watch as it will be to enter! Everyone loves a bit of friendly competition, so get together your team of eight (over 16s only) and start flexing your muscles! • Ferret-Racing - meet and learn about some loveable ferrets, then cheer on your favourite to win as it races its way through the course. • Amazing juggling and unicycle feats - enjoy lots of comedy and fun as Greg Chapman juggles many strange and odd things. And that’s not all at the biggest event of its kind in Surrey: • Children will love - our new Traditional Village Games, where everyone’s guaranteed to win a small prize! Entering the Children’s Fancy Dress Parade your little ones can let their imagination run wild & come dressed as whatever they like. Meeting all sorts of animals - from cuddly Shetland ponies & naughty goats to bees and owls and even tarantulas! Getting active with mini rugby & of course the Children’s Races (there’s a race for every age).

• Music and Dancing - the Nostalgia Steel Band is back with its infectious Caribbean rhythms to really get the party started! Plus there’s Zumba, Chadsworth dancing displays, and the 1st Claygate Scout & Guide band (which recently led the National St. George’s Day Parade at Windsor Castle). • 2,000 remarkable exhibits are the most popular area of the Show - enjoy displays from talented villagers and schoolchildren alike, ranging from baking to crafts, flowers to photography. • Of course, there’ll be the hugely-popular Dog Show and Classic Cars, imaginative gifts in the Stalls Village, thrilling martial arts displays, Punch & Judy and the Funfair (prices capped at £2.50). Barry Fitzpatrick, Claygate Flower & Village Show’s Chairman, said: “Our survey revealed that people love the Show for its amazing community spirit, fun family feel & for getting together with their friends and neighbours. It’s a great celebration of the local community & is the biggest variety of village life that you’ll ever see!” Tickets are available from Johnstons Newsagent in Claygate (£4 per adult / £2 per child) or on the gate (£5 per adult / £2 per child). Children under five go FREE.

here was a full house at Riverhouse on Saturday for the Anzac Day launch of the Mount Felix Tapestry, the community stitch project celebrating the centenary of WW1 and Walton’s No. 2 New Zealand Hospital at Mount Felix. The designer Andrew Crummy delivered an enthralling presentation on his life and work, including the Prestonpans Tapestry and more recently, the Great Tapestry of Scotland, at 143m the largest embroidered tapestry in the world. Andrew is excited about the Mount Felix Tapestry and has already completed the design for the first panel. The project has generated a great deal of interest and a number of community groups have come forward eager to take part. Its appeal goes across the age groups; Ashley Primary School, Rydens Enterprise School, various WI groups, including one in New Zealand, the University of the Third Age and the Embroiderers Guild are just some of the confirmed groups.

16 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

The launch was an opportunity to discover more about the fascinating history of Walton and Mount Felix, as well as for those hoping to be involved with stitching to understand the commitment required and the support that would be provided. There was a tangible feeling of excitement and optimism about this creative community initiative. About half the required funding has been raised, but more sponsors and donors are needed. Current supporters include the New Zealand High Commission, RC Sheriff, Walton Supersavers and Elmbridge BC. Andrea Watson, Community Services Manager, Walton Charity, another donor, said “We are delighted to hear about this community initiative that not only celebrates Walton’s involvement in supporting wounded soldiers during the First World War, but will also bring people together over the next year to create a fantastic piece of community artwork”. ight local artists will be exhibiting their work in the stable, conservatory and garden at Rose Cottage Stables, 46, West End Lane, Esher, KT10 8LA. Their artwork ranges from painting and ceramics to woodturning, stained glass and sculpture. Sculptress Alison Catchlove is well know at Wisley RHS for her quirky, humorous bird, bug and flower sculptures in metal. The sculpture of Janet Stanley reflects an interest in mythology and natural forms, a subject which Rosalind Moysen’s paintings also explore, using the textural quality of oil and mixed media to convey semi-abstract impressions of trees and landscape. Farida Khan-Evans’ still life and abstract paintings push the boundaries, with a mixture of media such as textiles, metal, photography and paint, whereas Sarah Jane Vickery’s

24 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

watercolour, ink and mixed media paintings have a focus on drawing. Beryl Hole will be showing delicate cut-away porcelain, strong stoneware and naked Raku ceramics. Jane Drown also works in ceramics, producing paper-thin textured vases and vessels inspired by the sea. She also works in stained glass on commission. Roger Marsden is an artistic woodturner who loves transforming the simple beauty of wood into finely-grained bowls, pots, peppergrinders and candlesticks. There will be demonstrations of welding, woodturning and painting. The exhibition starts on the weekend of 6th and 7th June and continues for the next 2 weeks on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, to finish on 21st June. It will open from 11 am to 5pm. Entry free. Dogs, bicycles and children welcome.

My month... …a Q&A with Jackson-Stops & Staff’s Lettings Manager, Camilla Trussler

Moving back closer to my childhood roots in Surrey has been a natural progression.

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself… A. I grew up in Surrey and attended local schools, so I feel that I have an excellent understanding of all that this beautiful area has to offer, with its wonderful mix of town and country living. Q. How did you start your career in Lettings and what attracted you to the business? A. My first role was working as a negotiator for an agent on Lavender Hill in Battersea; moving back closer to my childhood roots in Surrey has been a natural progression. Q. Why do you think Weybridge remains so popular? A. I think it offers something for everybody, whether you’re a professional looking to commute into London or a parent looking to settle children into fantastic schools, it really does have it all. Q. Is it still a good time for buy-to-let investors to put their money into property in Weybridge and the surrounding areas? A. As prices peaked in the central London market towards the end of 2014, we have enjoyed the ‘ripple’ effect of rental prices holding strong as people look slightly west and realise how much more their rental budget will get them in Weybridge and the surrounding areas we cover. Q. What are the three things requested most frequently by families looking to rent? A. Schools, schools, schools! Q. What are the three things most commonly requested by single professionals looking to rent? A. Young professionals are generally looking for convenient access to transport links as well as close proximity to the area’s excellent bars and restaurants; in terms of property types, the preference is towards contemporary, neutrally decorated accommodation. Q. Why does renting continue to be so popular in your area? A. Renting offers greater flexibility than the commitment of buying and also allows people to ‘test out’ an area. With so many corporate companies looking to place their professionals from abroad we are continually busy assisting relocation agents with their search for high quality properties to rent in the area.

OLLOWING the announcement that the UK has become the first country to provide a revolutionary new Meningitis B vaccine to babies, leading UK meningitis charity, Meningitis Now is urging people not to become complacent but to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of the disease. Bexsero, which protects against the UK’s most common form of bacterial meningitis, will be free to babies on the NHS childhood vaccination schedule. Initially, the vaccine will only be given to babies from two months old, with follow-up boosters. Whilst this is good news, it means that the present generation of older children, teenagers and adults is still very much at risk from the disease. Surrey Community Ambassadors for Meningitis Now, Alice and Bryan Austin, lost their daughter Gillian to the disease in 2004. Alice said: “Having experienced the loss of our 31 year old daughter and her baby (she was 28 weeks pregnant) to meningitis, I know how ill-informed the public is about the disease. It is not,

as widely believed, a disease that only affects babies, children and students. Meningitis can kill or maim anyone at any age.” The UK has one of the world’s highest Meningitis B rates, killing more of the country’s under-fives than any other infectious disease. One in 10 people dies and at least one in three survivors suffers lifelong after-effects, including limb loss, brain damage, epilepsy, deafness and blindness. There is no vaccine to protect against all types of meningitis, and so, if meningitis is suspected, it is vital that you remain vigilant, trust your instincts and seek urgent medical help. Meningitis Now, a UK charity working to save lives and rebuild the futures of people affected by meningitis through research, support and awareness, offers free wallet-sized signs and symptoms cards and phone apps. One of the most important plants in a garden is most likely to be the one that gets ignored the most. Give it the care it deserves, and it will serve you well.

TOP TIPS S U M M E R

Question: What’s green all year round? What gives all the colourful plants a gorgeous green backdrop to show off in front of? What plant is so tough that you can walk on it and yet it’s soft enough to sit on? And which of your garden plants will guarantee to look good all year round, even in the depths of dim, dark winter? Answer: the lawn. In my humble opinion, there is nothing more satisfying than to see a well-fed & watered lawn, with its edges sharp & well-defined.

The best time to feed a lawn is in the spring time, but if you have missed this window, then now is better than never. There is a flurry of foreign authors being published in the UK this month. The Reader on the 6.27 by Didier Laurent. This is a French bestseller about the redemptive power of books. A worker at a book pulping factory, leading a dull and solitary life, falls in love with the author of a diary he finds stored on a USB he finds on his morning train. Very warm and funny. My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises by Fredrik Backman. A new novel from the Swedish author of the international bestseller A Man Called Ove. This is a story about life and death and the right to be different. Will appeal to fans of Harold Fry and The Rosie Project. Ove was a Radio 4 Book At Bedtime and was chosen for Simon Mayo’s Radio 2 Bookclub. The Road Back by Di Morrissey. A novel about the choices we make and the costs we bear, from a much-loved and successful Australian author.

Journalist Chris Baxter is at a crossroads when he returns with his teenage daughter to live with his mother in the beautiful township of Neverend. Sentenced To Life by Clive James. I can’t recommend this collection of poems highly enough. Clive James looks back over an extraordinarily rich life with a clear-eyed and unflinching honesty. There are regrets, but no trace of self-pity in these verses, which, for all their open dealings with death and illness, are primarily a celebration of what is to be treasured and memorable in our time here. Again and again, James reminds us that he is not only a poet of effortless wit and lyric accomplishment: he is also an immensely wise one, who delights in using poetic form to bring a razorsharp focus to his thought. Miraculously, these poems see James writing with his insight and energy not only undiminished but positively charged by his situation: Sentenced to Life represents a career high point from one of the greatest literary intelligences of the age.

Book Voucher to WIN see p35 Globe. Life in Shakespeare’s London by Catharine Arnold. The life of Britain’s greatest dramatist was inextricably linked with the history of London. In 1599 Shakespeare’s company, the Chamberlain’s Men, opened the Globe playhouse on Bankside under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I. Globe takes its readers on a tour of London through Shakespeare’s life and work, as, in fascinating detail, Catharine Arnold tells how acting came of age. We learn about James Burbage, founder of the original Theatre in Shoreditch, who carried timbers across the Thames to build the Globe among the bear-gardens and brothels of Bankside, and of the terrible night in 1613 when the theatre caught fire during a performance of King Henry VIII. Rebuilt, the Globe continued to stand as a monument to Shakespeare’s genius until 1642 when it was destroyed on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. And finally, we learn how, 300 years later, Shakespeare’s Globe opened once more upon the Bankside to great acclaim, rising like a phoenix from the flames. Arnold creates a vivid portrait of Shakespeare and his London from the bard’s own plays and contemporary sources, combining a novelist’s eye for detail with a historian’s grasp of his unique contribution to the development of the English theatre. This is a portrait of Shakespeare, London, the man and the myth.

Pratchett, who sadly died very recently. Beautifully illustrated throughout by Mark Beech, each of the stories shows the seeds he developed in his later work, making this a fascinating collection from the fans’ perspective, as well as for children. Ages: 7+.

The Usborne Official Astronaut’s Handbook. All wannabe astronauts need to know about living in space, and the dedication and training that goes into a space mission. Includes a foreword from Tim Peake, the first British astronaut to embark on a mission to the International Space Station. Published to coincide with Peake’s mission, in November 2015. Ages: 9+.

The Parent Agency by David Baddiel. An epic wishfulfilment adventure for every child. Transported to a world where children are allowed to choose their parents, it seems like a dream come true for Barry Bennett, except things turn out to be not quite that simple... Illustrated by Roald Dahl Funny Prize winner, Jim Field. Ages: 9+. Shadow Cat by Gillian Cross. Nolan leaves school one day to discover that his mum has dyed her hair bright green, sold everything they own, and they’re going on a road trip of a lifetime. Meeting up with Feather, an unlikely friendship begins as they discover an escaped wild cat, a serval, that needs their protection. Together they vow to keep it a secret. But someone else wants the serval too. Someone who will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. A moving and compelling story of friendship and hope against the odds, from the Carnegie winning author, Gillian Cross. Ages: 9+

We believe in sustainable fishing and eating fish when it is at its best. This is a great time of year to buy this wonderfully versatile fish which you can do so much with. It’s perfect when baked or pan fried, and thanks to its firm texture, would work equally well in a stew. Cod can take strong flavours, such as chilli or rich tomato sauce.

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is ‘what are you listening to at the moment?’

To answer that, I thought I should compile a monthly listing of my most-played classic album and my favourite current album. Although Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hours’ first saw the light of day about a year ago, it still resonates with me as one of the finest recordings of recent times. Just 21, Sam sings with a purity and sublime beauty rarely heard in these times of bland ballads & wishy-washy cover versions. Sam is anything but bland. He sings from the soul & is surrounded by excellent musicians, producers & arrangers who’ve created a multi-award winning album born of a broken heart, as with so many great loves songs. Altogether a lovely recording, dwelling on the quieter moments in life, best enjoyed with the lights down low. My classic album of the month comes from the late Harry Nilsson, or just Nilsson as he became best known. In 1973, he released ‘A Little Tough of Nilsson in the Night’ which features his version of American classics or 20th century standards as they are often called. Released long before Rod Stewart struck gold with his collections of music for crooners, Harry gathered notables like Frank Sinatra’s arranger & the Beatles press officer, Derek Taylor, who produced it. It’s one of those albums that never fails to generate questions at parties, such as ‘wow, who are we listening to?’ & ‘what a wonderful collection of tunes!’ which includes ‘Thanks for the Memory’, ‘Over The Rainbow’ & ‘It’s Only A Paper Moon’. I got to know Harry Nilsson when he once called me out of the blue & invited me to have lunch with him. He told me that after seeing me on TV, I reminded him of a younger version of himself & he wanted me not to be tempted by rock ‘n’ roll excesses as he felt he had been. I assured him that I was born to be mild not wild (much the pity), & that I would treasure his advice. We shared an unforgettable meal & ever since, I’ve always taken a special interest in his recordings, of which ‘ALTNN’ is an outstanding example. Priceless!

The coincidental arrival of sunshine and a drop-top Beetle Cabrio from Volkswagen could not have been more timely, as I planned to head for a family get-together Wittering way. I skipped the motorway and instead breezed the old A3 countryside-view route, as pretty and picturesque a trek as you could want, with plenty of opportunity to test the VW’s many roadholding attributes. The car is its own silent witness, pulled along to upwards of 100mph, with nippy dashes by a whisperer of an engine smoothed to perfection off the back of long experience. Since Nazi despot Adolf Hitler urged the company to build a valuefor-the-pfennig people’s car and it made its debut in 1938, with some of his own design ideas in place, around 25million have been sold worldwide. It was then badged the “Kafer” - English for Beetle - and when it was introduced in small numbers into the UK in 1952 by Colborne Garages - now Lookers - in Guildford and Walton-on-Thames, it began its iconic existence for us.

My treat was to play catch-up, hood down and cosy going, hood up and cool coming back, with great views of rustic, green and hilly Surrey etc from the Cabrio’s panoramic windows front and side. It is a car that oozes satisfaction, a relaxer, uniquely stylish, and nowadays nowhere near the tin-can rattling noise machine of yesteryear. The body may roll a wee bit around the tighter corners, but not enough to have your passengers biting their nails, and on the straighter bits and motorways, it is immaculately behaved and the fabric roof does its duty in staving off any wind and road noise. When you wake up to the fine retro styling, the superbly equipped cabin and comfort level of the seating for four people, all at a price under £20,000, you realise you are

enjoying one of the best value droptops of them all. Better yet, those experts who eye the motor market and advise buyers reckon you should and could haggle the asking price down to around £17,500. For the likes of Trophy Wife, a natural-born and shamelessly cold-eyed negotiator, that would be a matter of course. For the shrinking violet likes of me, it is a heaven-sent tip. Economy-wise, and with a superbly performing 1.2-litre turbo-charged engine which is both punchy when the right foot makes its demands and smoothly efficient in the longer unhurried motorway moments, it is lightly demanding on the purse or wallet. I enjoyed our all-too-brief companionship more than I have done for a good while with any similarly equipped car. VW? Very Worthy... This Cabrio is drop-head gorgeous. Great idea of yours, Adolf. Specification: VW Beetle 1.2 TSI 105. Speed 111mph. 0-62 mph 11.7 secs. MPG 46.3. Price £19,010.

ou can call someone an idiot lovingly, and maintain & even strengthen the connection between you. And you can tell someone ‘You’re so nice’ in a way that’s intended – and received – as an insult. How come? Behind both statements is an intention that gives the words their meaning. But all too often, our intention is to make a point/have our way/be right/get the other person to do - or not do - something, rather than to build connection.

Connection? What’s that?

When I’m talking to you and feel you’re really listening to me without making any judgement, criticism or demand, that you care about how I feel & that my needs matter, I’ll feel connected to you & be more likely to listen to you in the same way. Non-violent Communication, or NVC Verbal violence can include coercion, manipulation, criticism, blame & shame. Non-violent communication (NVC) on the other hand encourages us to have empathy for ourselves & others. It holds that we all have the same basic human needs & our actions are merely strategies to meet them. It’s a process that respects everyone’s feelings & needs, & seeks ways of increasing connection, harmony & well-being. Simple – but not easy I have been dabbling in NVC for years, but it was only when I recently went on the NVC foundation course run by Jo McHale that I really got to grips with it & witnessed its power to transform relationships. While NVC is an excellent tool for dealing with difficult conversations, it can also be used to maintain harmony at home or work, to restore peace in war-torn communities (you can watch a YouTube video of NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg in Palestine) & everything in between.

 

At its simplest, NVC is a process that shapes clear & respectful communication. But when you get deeply into it, it becomes a way of being. Its four main steps are: Observation - describe what a video camera would see and hear without making an interpretation Feeling - say how you feel about what you have observed Need - identify what need of yours is or isn’t met as a result Request - express clearly what you would like the other person to do or not do. (Note: if you’re not prepared to hear ‘no’, you’re making a demand, not a request!) Yes, it might be a pain to have to think about what you’re going to say before you say it. But in my experience, it’s a lot harder to put things right after you’ve put your foot in it (though NVC can be helpful there, too).

In hope,

Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC

PS – – If you have a relationship to heal or you just want to communicate with more compassion and understanding, Jo McHale’s NVC Foundation course (www.jo-mchale.com) is a great place to start.
