MAKING YOUR MONEY
WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.
I am an employer with a handful of staff and some of them were automatically enrolled. Are the pension contribution rates increasing? The total minimum contributions that must be paid for all workers automatically enrolled or opted in to your workplace pension increases again from 6th April 2019. The rates will increase from a total of 5% to a total of 8% going into the pension. From this the employer must contribute a minimum of 3% and by doing this, it would mean the employee therefore has to contribute 5%. As the employer, you can choose to pay in more therefore, reducing what the percentage amount your employee has to pay in. For example, you could pay 4% and therefore the employee would have to pay in 4%. This is because a total of 8% is going into the pension pot and at least 3% is coming from the employer. If your pay reference period straddles the 6th April 2019, you will need to pro-rata your calculation.
most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world, via its initiative called Making Tax Digital (MTD). All VAT-registered businesses with a turnover above the current VAT registration threshold (£85,000 until March 2022 under current plans) will be legally required to digitally record their books and file VAT returns using MTD-compliant accounting software. MTD applies to VAT returns starting after 1st April 2019. You must sign up for MTD at least one week before your VAT Return is due, and at least 24 hours after your last non-MTD VAT return was filed. Your accountant or bookkeeper may be able to do this for you if they have the right authorities in place with HMRC. Businesses that pay VAT by Direct Debit cannot sign up in the 7 working days leading up to, or the 5 working days after their VAT Return is due. Example of when you must register for MTD VAT returns are quarterly, ending March, June, September and December. The first MTD VAT return will be the one ending 30th June 2019. VAT is paid by Direct Debit You could sign up any time from 15th May 2019 and no later than 31st July 2019 VAT is not paid by Direct Debit You could sign up any time, but must be registered by 31st July 2019 Once you’ve registered, HMRC will send you a confirmation email within 72 hours of signing up. You should not submit a VAT Return until you receive the confirmation email.

Roasted sweet potato & goats’ cheese salad ingredients 500g (about 2 medium to large) essential Waitrose Sweet Potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil 50g pecan halves 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 small red onion, finely sliced 130g tub pitted black olives, drained & roughly chopped 1½ tbsp balsamic vinegar 250g pack pre-cooked red & white quinoa 115g bag baby spinach 125g soft goats’ cheese, crumbled Squeeze lemon juice (Serves 4)
method 1. Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. Cut the sweet potatoes into 3cm chunks & toss with the olive oil in a large roasting tin. Season & roast for 25mins, stirring halfway. Put the pecans in a smaller roasting tin & place in the oven for the final 6mins of the cooking time. 2. Meanwhile, heat the extra virgin olive oil in a small pan over a low heat & very gently fry the red onion until softened, about 4-5mins. Tip in the olives & balsamic vinegar, warming through, then season & set aside. 3. Heat the quinoa according to pack instructions. When the sweet potatoes are done, take out of the oven & stir through the quinoa to combine. Transfer to a large serving plate with the spinach, then roughly chop the pecans & scatter over. Spoon over the red onion, olive & balsamic dressing & top with the goats’ cheese, a grinding of black pepper & a squeeze of lemon juice.
cooking tip There’s no need to peel the sweet potatoes, as the skins are a good source of fibre. Just give them a rinse or light scrub, if need be.

Word reached us here at Look Local, that The Swan Inn Pub in Claygate had been taken over by the popular London chef Jose Pizarro recently, so we went along to find out more. Upon arrival we were met by General Manager, the lovely Huw Johnson, who was previously managing Jose’s Bermondsey Street restaurant before moving to run The Swan. The bar area is very roomy, the tables well spaced and has a very relaxed feel. There was a gentleman sitting quietly with his drink and working on his I-pad, another sitting reading the paper, a small group of friends having a drink and sharing some Tapas, and others just having a drink and a chat. Whilst you can sit and eat anywhere in the Swan, the main dining area is offset from the bar and you can prebook these tables. The Swan has a really lovely traditional English pub feel with a modern twist and the menu reflects this. The

menu is inspiring and very flexible. Our lovely waitress for the evening, Kaz, was very knowledgeable and was able to talk us through the menu choices. Mostly made up of a wide selection of tapas there are a handful of more traditional menu choices with a special Jose twist, such as Fish & Chips. Whilst we waited for our meal to arrive we nibbled on Gordal olives stuffed with blood orange, and ciabatta with a bowl of olive oil for dipping. Heaven! We had chosen the Presa Iberica (100% acorn fed Iberico pork) with baby potatoes, pimenton, to share and a selection of tapas. Our meal arrived and we sampled the delicious delights that this lovely pub has to offer complimented by a bottle of the house red Syrah Cuvee. It really is a lovely way to share food with friends. We finished our meal with a bowl of Spanish strawberries served with vermouth vinegar, white chocolate & pistachios (Yes! That really does work!)

and Almond & Prune tart served with Sherry cream. A family of four was on the table next to us, a couple with their two young daughters. What a lovely way for them to eat out and no doubt accommodate all the differing appetites and tastes that a family has. Comfortably busy, the pub offers a relaxed atmosphere, flexible dining, excellent food and great service. In addition to all this there is a really lovely outside seating and eating area. It feels like a secret hideaway. Enclosed by high fencing and walls it is a surprisingly peaceful area despite the busy road nearby. This area also brings extra culinary delights! There is a char grill alongside a Green Egg (a smoker and charcoal barbecue) and a Paella stand. The paella stand has a wood fire in the centre, similar to a fire pit, (where the paella pan can stand) and is surrounded by a cast iron griddle for cooking all the components for your paella. These fabulous additions to the core menu will mostly
be in use Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Roll on Summer I say. I cannot wait to go back when the weather is better to try this part of the inspirational dining experience The Swan offers. Part of the garden will be available for private hire, so you could have your very own Paella party with your private chef for the event! Mmm! When’s my birthday? Also available for hire is a private dining room upstairs in the pub that seats up to 16. There will be special events coming up, with music, dancing etc. One of these will be a dinner on 10th July to celebrate Jose’s new book “Andalusia”. I cannot recommend a visit to the Swan enough. We had a fabulous evening and are planning a return visit very soon. Our thanks go to Huw and his team for making us so welcome. Gardening with Auntie Planty THE ROSE
The rose is undoubtedly the nation’s favourite flower. To help keep yours in tip-top shape for the summer, here are some questions I’ve been asked recently on specific thorny problems. Q1: I have noticed some large, almost completely round holes appearing on the leaves on one rose bush. Could this be slug damage? A1: No, the smooth outline and regular shape of your holey leaves means without doubt that there is a leafcutting bee about, rather than caterpillars or slugs. Having cut the leaf, the female bee uses these leaf pieces to make thimble-shaped cells in her nest. A nest may contain up to twenty cells.
when all the new growth is 20 ft in the air, and you are left with bare wood at the bottom of the plant. This is the time to remove some of the oldest wood right back to the base to encourage the rose to produce new vigorous growth from ground level.
Q4: We have recently moved into a new house, and I want to remove some very old rose plants and replace them. But I have been told that new roses will not grow well in this spot. What can I do? A4: The problem that develops is called ‘rose sickness’ and it’s difficult to say exactly what this is except it’s a build up of pathogens in the soil. You can solve the problem in one of several ways. The simplest is by removing the plant/s to give the soil a rest which means Q2: I have found that one of my roses produces either planting with another type altogether or putting flower buds that fail to open, and then turn brown. down grass on the spot for about four years. A2: This condition is known as bud balling, and is due The alternative is to replace the soil. Even in a small to the effects of wet weather. The problem will always be garden, this is not impossible and simply means digging worse in shady corners where the plant is not given any a slightly bigger hole than would normally be the case, benefit from the drying rays of the sun. and replacing with soil from another part of the garden I would suggest that you prune off the affected stems that has not supported a rose plant in the last five years. and buds to an obvious growth point. Keep your plant well fed and watered with any good rose plant food. Auntie Planty is a chartered Q3: Is it true that I should not regularly prune my climbing rose? A3: Climbing roses need very little pruning, and can be left to their own devices. However, the time does come © 2019 Valerie McBride-Munro

Inspiration!
Do what you love Years ago, when I was taking a statistics course as part of my maths studies, I realised that I wasn’t interested in the measurement side of statistics at all, the collection and organisation of data - but I was fascinated by the human aspect. Why did people do X? What made Y work for some people and not others? How could Z be used to inspire greater productivity or success? Many years later, when I was taking a marketing course, I became aware that I wasn’t interested in strategy and planning. But I was fascinated by the modules on understanding people’s needs and how to meet them, and also those on communication: How did it work when it was going well? What got in the way when it broke down? What made it more impactful? I did work as a maths teacher for a while but I knew that wasn’t ‘my thing’. I also worked in marketing for some years and realised that that, too, wasn’t my calling. But an understanding of human psychology and communication are both intrinsic parts of being a coach, and when I finally started my coach training, I knew I’d ‘come home’.
Are you doing what you love? If not, try asking yourself what you’ve done in your professional or personal life that you did love or find fascinating. A change of job doesn’t have to be a sideways or upwards move in the same environment. I once met a dog-lover who also loved walking and was leaving a corporate job to become a dog-walker. Often, we don’t even need to leave our job. It’s enough just to give ourselves permission to pursue the activities we enjoy in our own time. Maybe the house won’t be so clean or tidy if we spend all weekend working on that book we’ve always dreamed of writing, or taking apart and cleaning the motorbike, or messing around on the river. But we’ll be happy. And when we’re happy, we are less stressed and nicer to be around. Do something you love today!
Sonia Duggan + CPCC ACC +
Now don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I hated everything about working in teaching or marketing. But I wouldn’t have been doing the work in my spare time just because I loved it. With coaching it’s a different story, and I love to do pro-bono work for charities.
PS - Do you need a hand creating a life - or a job -you
I often get asked for career coaching. So many people would like to change their job but don’t know what they want to do instead. And the prospect of actually being able to love their work seems totally selfindulgent and unrealistic to them. (I was one of them until I met my coach!)

POEM CORNER Ode To Teresa Doing a temping job - share at the offices of Esso, in Leatherhead. May 2000 Without Teresa where would we be, Two temps from Reed, Margaret and me? “My cursor’s stuck, Outlook’s hazy, This wretched table’s driving me crazy!” Pleas for help, where? And how? What happens to this “send out” now? The sums on “Expenses” don’t agree, Where’s Augusta? What’s PMT? From this confusion there emanates A quiet voice that simply states, The solution and though up to her eyes, Always stops to help and advise. Margaret and I would’ve been up the creek, Without your help week after week. So a very big “Thank you”!

VOLVO XC90 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
Wow factor cars are few and far between; rare commodities in a market hungry for good taste & value for money. And that brings me right-away to a success story of a supply to please, & thoroughly satisfy, in the attractive shape of Volvo’s latest SUV challenger, their XC90. As a treat of fulsome & comfy features, of family requirements on the move, it ticks all the boxes. And what a looker, too!!! Their deservedly legendary seven-seater, has been given a clever & welcome overhaul, but it holds onto one crucial factor; a transversely set-up engine whose huge share of its length can be handed over to the car’s interior for a generously spacious lounge-like atmosphere. In fact, just about every item in XC90 is fresh - right down to its refashioned Volvo badge. That just about sums up how beneficially caring the designers have been. Now what about its all embracing cabin/cockpit, call it what you like? Little or nothing has been left to chance in the Scandanavian company’s quest to give value for your hard-earned. The all-new infotainment set-up is all singing, all dancing and it dwells in a system that occupies most of the central dash, with stylish graphics, high resolution & clear to read & understand menus, and fixtures and
28 LookLocal Magazine - June 2019
switches which require the least effort. But all credit to the designers: their principal concern has been all about comfort for the driver & passengers relaxing over the seven seats. And to add to the joys of the riders, the handling of the car is excellent, with very little roll or understeer, and offers a general feeling of ease and relaxation. Ultra-safe, too. A four-wheel-drive, offering the most secure traction on the wettest and most threatening skiddy roads, that would easily trap lesser, well-equipped rivals. If you plan a marathon drive for a holiday, in say, far off Scotland, have no frets about the family’s full comfort, with the arrangement of seating with its three-row design. The first two with five places, that all recline & slide to cope with whatever room is needed and the third row is just the job for the restlessness of leggy teenagers. Behind that is a fair-sized boot that can be extended by folding up one or all of the five back seats. The cheapest in the range is the D5 Momentum priced at £50,435. But personally I would go for D5 Inscrip’ Pro, nearly ten grand more, but with very top spec and a just about everything you need to hand, to hold a front running lead over of its rivals. XC90? On Song for A Decade Elmbridge Ladies Choir celebrates 10th Anniversary
One of Surrey’s largest and liveliest community choirs are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a concert at Cornerstone the Church in Walton-on-Thames on Saturday 29th June 2019. The 90-voice Elmbridge Ladies Choir, under the direction of Christine Parker, will perform “Now we are Ten”, a compilation of the choirs’ favourite songs from the last decade, plus the very first performance of the choirs’ brand-new repertoire. “We are all very excited about this concert as it gives us a chance to sing our hearts out with all the songs we absolutely love, as well as showcase our new songs,” says Christine Parker. “It’s hard to believe we are ten years old; many of our current members joined the choir at the very first rehearsal! The ladies are so supportive of each other and so enthusiastic, and as Musical Director I couldn’t be prouder.” Elmbridge Ladies Choir, together with Elmbridge Choir, form Surrey Music, a community organisation which has raised in excess of £200,000 for charities and worthy causes. This concert will raise funds for the Dylan Howells Foundation, a charity which supports local individuals
and sports clubs in Surrey, encouraging children and young adults to progress in their chosen sport and to help them enjoy life and fulfil their ambitions, irrespective of ability. The charity was set up in memory of Dylan Howells, who passed away suddenly aged 41. “We are delighted to support this charity, not least because Dylan’s mum, Doreen, is a long-serving member of Elmbridge Ladies Choir,” explains Cliff van Tonder, CEO and Founder of Surrey Music. “The ladies have achieved so much in ten years, and I feel so proud that simply by doing what they love to do – sing! – they bring joy to so many people and have helped so many charities.” Surrey Music’s concerts are known for the fun they bring to their audience, and this one promises to be no different. With a diverse programme of songs from 60s kitsch to contemporary pop and rock, a special performance from the 100+ mixed voice Elmbridge Choir and guest appearances from Musical Directors from the past ten years, an evening of great celebration is planned! The concert starts at 7pm. Tickets costing £12 adults, £5 under 16 or £44 for a group of 4, are available now from www.charityconcert.co.uk.
