Snow drops, multi coloured crocuses and bright yellow daffodils are all putting in an appearance in my garden at the moment; so good to see. We welcome you once again, Spring! There is much going on locally this month and we are delighted to share a great selection of events within our pages... Weybridge Male Voice Choir will be in action at East Molesey Methodist Church on 16th March. See page 8 for the low down. Continuing in a musical vein, the Oxshott & Cobham Music Society are delighted to present an ‘International Celebrity Concert’. This will be held in nearby Claygate. Find out more within, and a little Jazz is on offer at Imber Court on 15th and 26th March. See page 31 for that! The Community Support Team at Elmbridge Borough Council are on the look out for some willing volunteers to help out with the life line service “Meals on Wheels”. Do take a look at our feature within if you think you can help. Please also take a minute, to check out our What’s on pages this month. They are full of great ideas; science week at RHS Gardens Wisley, World Book Day at Painshill Park to name but a few. The Weybridge library notice can be found on page 34; they have a selection of great reading groups taking place, so check that out too. And finally, please remember your Mum on Mother’s Day that’s on 31st March. Wishing you all a great month,

Why not making volunteering your New Years resolution for 2019?

Have you ever thought about volunteering, but never found the right time to start? With January being the perfect time for New Year’s resolutions, make volunteering a plan you commit to this year. The Community Support Services team at Elmbridge Borough Council are currently looking for volunteers to support the Meals on Wheels service across the Centres for the Community. Each week, volunteer drivers deliver almost 1,000 meals across the Borough to older and vulnerable residents. A standard delivery round only takes a couple of hours and each volunteering role is flexible, fitting in with personal commitments and lifestyle. The Meals on Wheels service is a life-line for so many residents and more than a meal; a visit from the volunteer is vital for someone that might not see anyone else during the day. Trish, a dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer for over 20 years says: “I just love volunteering as a Meals on Wheels driver. Each time I volunteer I feel like I am giving

16 Looklocal Magazine - March 2019

back to the community. The residents are always so pleased to see me, which makes me feel appreciated in my role”. If volunteering for Meals on Wheels isn’t what you’re looking for, the Centres have a variety of opportunities that can work around your schedule. Roles range from volunteering in the tea bar and leading arts and crafts activities; to providing support to people with learning disabilities or memory loss. Councillor Andrew Burley the Portfolio Holder for Community & Social Affairs notes: “We are so grateful to the volunteers that dedicate their time each week to supporting the local community. Every person plays a fundamental role in keeping our services running. If you’re thinking of volunteering, make 2019 the year you join our team”. To find a volunteering opportunity that suits you, please visit elmbridge.gov.uk/css/volunteer, or alternatively speak to the Voluntary and Support Services Manger on 01372 474 552.

MAKING YOUR MONEY

WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

Are my professional fees and subscriptions allowable for tax? I am employed as a nurse with the NHS and pay a number of professional fees and subscribe to a few medical journals such as Nursing Standard. Am I entitled to tax relief on these payments? You can claim tax relief on fees or subscriptions you pay - but only if you must have membership in order to do your job or it’s helpful for your work. HMRC maintains a list of approved professional organisations which you can view online here. You cannot claim tax back on fees or subscriptions you’ve paid to professional organisations not approved by HMRC, or for: · life membership subscriptions · fees or subscriptions you have not paid for yourself (for example, if your employer has paid for them) You can make the claim on your tax return if you complete one. Otherwise, there is an option to do it online, by post or over the phone.

Q.

A.

My tax bill looks different I have received my tax bill from HMRC but it is much lower than I was expecting. What should I do? There is a known issue with HMRC’s systems that is affecting some taxpayers who have filed their 2017/18 tax returns and have ‘payments on account’ to make. A payment on account is an instalment for next year’s tax. They do not always apply; it will depending on the level of your tax liability and how much tax you have collected “at source” (from your wages or pension income, for example).

Q. A.

It sounds as if you don’t use an accountant or tax adviser, in which case you should check what your 2017/18 tax return said when you filed it. If you find there is a dfference, you must contact HMRC to put it right. If you’re using a tax adviser or accountant, make sure that the amount due on any HMRC correspondence or when you log-in to your tax account, is the same as what your adviser told you it would be. If there is any discrepancy, make sure you call your accountant or tax adviser; you should not rely on the information being sent by HMRC. If you are affected by the issue, you must take action because you are at risk of HMRC accidentally reimbursing the ‘overpayment’ or being charged late payment penalties if you pay too little.

Correcting your tax return I have noticed that I made a mistake on the tax return I submitted on 31st January – am I able to amend it? If you make an error on your tax return, you normally have 12 months from 31st January after the end of the tax year to correct or amend it. For example, if you filed your 2016/17 online tax return by 31st January 2018, you have until 31st January 2019 to amend it. You can only amend your return after this timeframe if you received your return late (after 31st July). If you owe more tax or need to pay a penalty because of the mistake, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will notify you how much you need to pay and when and how to pay it. If you believe you are due a refund, you can tell HMRC how you would like to receive it. If you submitted your tax return online, you can also amend it electronically. And if you chose to file it as a paper copy, there is no need to resend in the whole tax return. Just write to HMRC and attach the pages you want to make corrections to.

Gardening with Auntie Planty The world of plants

I was given a fascinating book to take on holiday - all about plants and how, until the early 1700s, English gardens were really rather colourless especially during winter. It’s called The Brother Gardeners and it’s an absorbing tale that charts the birth of our obsession with plants and gardening. I suspect that most of us take for granted the riot of colourful plants on offer in garden centres today, and how we can now find plants to perform brilliantly in those dark days of winter. And I think we also take for granted the simple naming system created by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus to identify each and every member of the plant kingdom. His binomial botanical latin system could be understood by botanists and gardeners the world over. However, it was his first proclamation that plants didn’t just multiply by the will of some higher being – but that - shock horror - sex was the underlying driving force. It was this assertion that gave him his first bit of bad press in the plant world. Purists just could not believe that their beloved garden subjects would stoop to such bodice-ripping shenanigans in the borders, and, in broad daylight! While I leave you with those thoughts, I’d like to pass on to the afore-mentioned clever two-word plant naming formula that Linnaeus then went on to introduce to the world. He recommended latin as it was a dead language, and unlikely to evolve over time. The first part of the name identified the genus, the second the species. - such © 2019 Valerie McBride-Munro

as with our surname and first name. This may seem kindergarten stuff, but what went before this moment in time was a complete mess. Folk named their plants just as they found them and that meant including quite a description of a plant’s size and shape. Here I will give you the unwieldy pre-Linnaeus example of the white pine Pinus Americana quinis ex uno folliculo setis longus tenuibus triquetris ad unum angulum per totam longitudinem minutissimis crenis asperatis In the binomial system, this was reduced to Pinus strobus. Which would you prefer? However, Linnaeus didn’t have an easy ride in getting the botanists of the day to accept this new system. He suffered abuse from all directions, especially over the plant-sex bit. His rationale was not only practical but also philosophical - he believed that without permanent names there would be no permanent knowledge. That was back in the 1730s, and Linnaeus’ system still holds good today, in spite of its early bumpy ride. By the way, The Brother Gardeners is a cracking read, but I’ll have to have another holiday so that I can finish it. Auntie Planty offers garden problem solving sessions in your own garden. Book Reviews March

‘Asymmetry’ by Lisa Halliday (Paperback, £8.99) On a Manhattan park bench Alice, a young editor, is charmed by Ezra, a much older and well-known author. Their differing ages and finances begin as a playful setting for a connection which grows beyond their initial light-hearted meetings. Halliday writes their relationship from the outside; we are observers. At Heathrow, economist Amar is detained by immigration on his way to Kurdistan. Intelligent and patient, he talks us through his experience first-hand, exploring the practical and emotional delicacies of immigrant life in the US, and family visits to Baghdad. Halliday’s narrative versatility and the many other lives glimpsed in Assymetry open up a wide, rewarding and complex world.

‘In Your Defence’ by Sarah Langford (Paperback, £8.99) Sarah Langford, a bannister, skilfully demonstrates the workings and failings of the underfunded family court system. In each chapter we follow a different character, meeting people from all walks of life. Langford seamlessly weaves us through the law’s process and procedures, and the everyday rituals and routines of barristers. The gripping storylines of each individual are told with heartache and humour, high drama and quiet pain, along with her own feelings as she defends them.

Chéri’ by Colette (Paperback, £7.99) The recent film about Colette’s life is a great reminder to enjoy the delicacy of her writing. Here she explores with wit and poignancy the conflicting demands of society, self-interest and the heart. For six years Chéri, a beautiful young man, has been living a life of idle indulgence with Lea, an elegant courtesan approaching the end of her career. Parted by Chéri’s suitable marriage, the lovers blunder through denial into the realisation of the depth of their loss amidst the deliciously artful malice of society friendships.

400g pack essential British Chicken Mini Breast Fillets 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1½ tsp ground cumin 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 lemon, zest and juice ½ x 375g pack Tilda Basmati & Wild Rice 1 large onion, finely sliced 15g unsalted butter 1 leek, halved and sliced 2 carrots, grated 1 tsp ground cinnamon 50g dried cranberries 25g pack flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped 4 tbsp natural yogurt

Prep: 15mins. Cooking: 35mins Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes

method

1. Preheat the grill to high. Toss the chicken in a bowl with ½ tbsp oil, ½ tsp cumin, the garlic & the juice of ½ lemon; season & set aside. Put the rice in a large saucepan & cover with plenty of cold water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 20 mins; drain. 2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining ½ tbsp oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion & a pinch of salt; fry for 10mins, stirring, until just golden. Add the butter, leek & carrots & fry for another 3-4mins. Stir in the remaining 1 tsp cumin, the cinnamon & cranberries; fry for another 2-3mins. Stir through the drained rice & the remaining juice of ½ lemon; check the seasoning. 3. Arrange the chicken fillets in a foil-lined shallow baking tray & grill for 5-6mins on each side, until the juices run clear & there is no pink meat. Toss the parsley through the rice, then stir most of the lemon zest through the yogurt, with the remainder sprinkled on top. Serve the chicken with the rice & the lemon yogurt alongside.

cook’s tip This spiced rice goes well with all kinds of meat and fish. Try serving it with lamb chops or salmon fillets.

Family business raises vital funds for neighbouring hospice

Award-winning garden centre and farm shop Garsons of Esher has raised an amazing £6,000 for their charity of the year for 2018, the Princess Alice Hospice. The Christmas period alone brought in nearly £4,500 of that figure as generous shoppers placed donations in charity boxes at the tills and collection buckets at the garden centre’s popular late-night festive shopping events. The annual appearance of two live reindeer in the run

up to Christmas helped to further boost funds. Visitors were able to visit them for free but encouraged to give any spare change into collection buckets by the reindeer enclosure. For the first time, Garsons hosted one of the Hospice’s Memory Trees alongside the reindeer, enabling customers to remember loved ones by placing a dove decoration on a lit-up Christmas tree. By the end of the festive period, the tree was covered with around 1,000 memory doves, each inscribed with personal and moving messages and accompanied by a donation to the charity. Princess Alice Hospice senior partnership fundraiser Claire Woodward said: “We have been truly amazed by the generosity of Garsons customers towards the hospice over the festive season, and extremely grateful for the garden centre’s support us this year. “Garsons is renowned for its magnificent Christmas displays - the amazing West End stage theme this year was stunning – and we are indebted to them for offering their customers the chance to remember loved ones by hosting one of the Hospice’s Memory Trees.” It costs more than £9.9 million a year to provide the care Princess Alice gives patients, their families and carers and it relies on local people and businesses like Garsons to ensure it continues to provide this muchneeded support. “We have a close relationship with the Princess Alice Hospice and greatly admire the amazing care that they give families,” said director of Garsons, Ben Thompson. “It has been a privilege to support them through the past year and we would like to thank our customers for being so generous and helping us achieve this fantastic total.” For more information about the Princess Alice Hospice visit www.pah.org.uk

Surrey’s star shines brightly at coveted “People’s Honours” National Awards

Community stalwart and inspirational founder of Surrey Music, Cliff van Tonder, has been recognised at a prestigious ceremony at The Palace of Westminster held onThursday 24th January, and honoured with a British Citizen Award for Services to the Arts (BCAa). The British Citizen Award serves to recognise “determined, committed endeavour in improving the workplace or community, effectively impacting the lives of those around them”. Cliff was nominated by Surrey Music - the community organisation he founded and runs voluntarily as CEO and Musical Director - in recognition of his 13 years of selfless service in creating, nurturing and growing the society, and for the huge impact he has had on his members and the wider community, and for the positive contribution he has made to society. In 2005 Cliff formed Elmbridge Choir in Cobham, to provide an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to enjoy performing choral music while at the same time giving something back to their local community. 13 years later, Surrey Music has raised more than £175,000 for charitable purposes, awarded grants totalling £14,000 for music activities and initiatives, established a big band, supported a youth band, enabled a group of adults with learning disabilities to enjoy weekly music sessions, and now comprises two thriving community choirs - Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir - with a membership of 240 members.

Along with 29 other worthy recipients from all corners of the UK, Cliff was presented with a specially struck medal inscribed with the words ‘For the Good of the Country’, and a framed Certificate of Honour. The ceremony was hosted by patrons of The British Citizen Award, The Rt. Hon. The Lord Dholakia OBE DL and Dame Mary Perkins. Medals and certificates were presented by sponsors of the Award: Specsavers, Unilever, Unity Trust Bank, Experianand The Cooperative Bank. Cliff was presented with his medal by Places for People’s Group Executive Director for Affordable Housing, Pat Egan, who said, “It was an honour to present Cliff with an Award. His efforts towards making music accessible for everyone has brought the community to life. Cliff’s exceptional dedication in creating a community choir has allowed hundreds of people to experience the joys of singing and performing.” “There is no end to Cliff’s drive and energy which he gives freely and in abundance to the members of Surrey Music and to serving the local community,” explains Surrey Music’s Publicity Officer, Debbie Groves, who nominated Cliff for the award on behalf of the society. “Nominating him for a British Citizen Award was a very fitting way to thank him for all he does, and we couldn’t be happier for him that his efforts have been recognised in this way.” “I am so incredibly humbled and honoured to receive this Award, and very proud that I was able to represent Surrey at the ceremony!” said Cliff. “I heard so many inspiring stories of courage and conviction and feel privileged to receive this honour for doing something that I love.” The event was hosted by TV personality Michael Underwood, who stated “Having presented the very first British Citizen Awards, it’s a real honour to be invited back and a privilege. I am in awe learning more about the incredible people being recognised for their contribution to society.”

Toyota Supra Car Review

Supra-dooper! That is Toyota’s upcoming newcomer, a challenger of immense ability in the highly competitive sports car market. And it is due for a mid-summer launch, which is as exciting a prospect as can be. After months of rumour and anticipation the release of the long-nosed two-door coupe, an out-and-out sports car, has been finally confirmed, and already more than 350 buyers have ordered the exhilarating flyer. It was given a sneak preview at the recent Detroit Motor Show and it caused an instant stir and an avalanche of questions on when it would be up for sale. Little wonder. It is pleasing to look at and its underlying performance presence and promise will, I am confidently certain, accelerate it to the top the wish list of those with fifty grand to invest in a showpiece thriller that recaptures both the spirit and appearance of all that genuine sports car enthusiasts desire. It has been an arduous and tantalizing wait with Toyota cleverly leaking hints that the rumours of its appearance are not too far removed from the truth. It has been developed surreptitiously at the Nurburgring in Germany, the track scene of many an memorable car race. So, what about its power play? That is an exciting breathtaker, too. Every Supra boasts a turbo-charged straight six engine, developing 335 brake horse power. The cockpit, under a double-bubble roof, is a treat, designed around a set of race-inspired closely and cosy seats with extra side bolsters, high back support and integrated head restraints. And in every car there is a set of digital dials, and extensively fully informative infotainment screen.

Inspiration!

How on earth...?? It was a brilliant, chilly day at the tail end of January. Sunshine was streaming through the windows. As I walked across the room, my gaze hit the ceiling and I stopped in my tracks. How on earth did all those webs get there? Ok, I did know there was a little web there some time ago, but it was hardly noticeable at the time and I was busy and it must have slipped my mind each time I cleaned the house. Ugh. They have to go. Out with the vacuum cleaner. We can live with something in our lives that doesn’t really bother us too much: Sure, it’s not perfect, but then, what is? / It’s not such a big deal, why make waves? / This isn’t a good time, I’ll think about it later. / I’m not in the mood. / I’m too tired ... And then - boom. Suddenly it hits us between the eyes - or in the heart - and we can’t ignore it any longer. Often, we don’t see the ‘webs’ that have slowly spread through our lives, gathering dust and maybe, if they’re in a little-used corner of our lives, even metaphorical dead insects. We can become adept at walking through life without seeing, just as I successfully walked through my room without looking up at the ceiling in the corner of the room. Sometimes, we really just don’t see things. Sometimes, we avoid looking where we might see something we don’t want to. Until the sun streams in at an odd angle and we can’t not see the mess. And that’s what coaching does, shining a light from a totally different angle, so we get to see the webs that have tangled their way across our life. And then we can decide whether we want to sweep them away or not. That’s what I love about my coaching friends. They won’t say, “Huh, everyone else has seen them, how

come you couldn’t?” or “I’ve been telling you about them for years, but did you listen to me??” or “Don’t worry, they’re not that bad. Everyone has some webs somewhere.” Instead, they ask me questions that come from a place of kindness and curiosity, like “What impact is it having on your life?” and “How would you feel if you left it as it is?” and “What’s one thing you can do today that will make you feel better about it, even if you can’t tackle the whole thing for a while?” Questions that don’t judge or criticise. Questions that help me to understand myself better and make powerful choices that will improve my life. What are you not seeing?? Happy hoovering!

A Great Donation To Woking Lions From Waitrose Weybridge

Left to right: Woking President Bob Hills, Community Partner Tracey Henderson, Waitrose Manager Ian Thorpe and Lion Roger Chamberlain.

Waitrose Weybridge branch has produced a great donation of £217 through their ‘green disc’ scheme in support of Woking Lions. The money has contributed to the Lions’ Christmas Day lunch for people on their own at Moorcroft Day Centre and more than 200 hampers which were delivered across the area to those in need during the festive time. President Bob Hills said: ‘We are very grateful to customers who supported us, enabling us to give pleasure to guests on Christmas Day and others who needed extra provisions to enjoy the celebrations. Waitrose has assisted us in making a difference to many people throughout our area.’
