From the Editor Welcome to Look Local in May!
More bank holidays to look forward to this month, I could really get used to these four day weeks, couldn’t you? Coupled with the longer days, it almost feels like I have time on my hands, but not quite! We are very happy to hear from an expanding local business about their opening day when the Mayor of Woking was delighted to officiate! A second shop in nearby Horsell for Claygate fishmongers Williams and Bunkell. This is a wonderful local fish shop which boasts ‘award winning smoked salmon’, as well as a whole host of other fishy delights! Well worth a visit to either of their branches, I’d say.
Local celebrity/film star James Cosmo is taking part in a massive charity cycle ride across Zambia, riding from Lusaka to Victoria Falls. What a great adventure and a great way to help so many children too. Read all about his adventure inside this month. You will all spot a whole host of information about some brilliant local events going on in and around Weybridge in May which I hope you will enjoy. Add to this all the regular Look Local features….
Enjoy May, everyone! Until next time, take care,

he long-awaited Williams and Bunkell Fishmongers, famous for its smoked salmon, has joined the parade of independent shops in Horsell village near Woking. A grand opening, complete with bubbles, award-winning smoked salmon and a ceremonial cutting of the fish net was held on 10 March, attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Woking. The Mayor of Woking, Cllr Tony Branagan, said: “I feel particularly pleased and proud to open another business in Horsell. We have an excellent butcher, a fruit and veg shop and now a fishmonger’s. It really enhances and makes the place better.” Local residents have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the new fishmongers which, together with the new greengrocer Boz and Ali next door, has brought a much needed revival to the High Street in Horsell. Also based in the quaint Surrey village of Claygate since 1985, Williams and Bunkell Fishmongers already has an excellent reputation in the local area. It is renowned for its great customer service and stunning displays of sustainably-caught fresh fish and shellfish. The shop in Claygate also has a smoker on the premises where salmon, haddock and tuna are smoked. Director of Williams and Bunkell, Matthew Clift,

has been a fishmonger since he was 15. He started as a Saturday boy in Claygate and become a full time member of staff after he finished college. Known to everyone as Matt, his skills as a fishmonger won him the junior craftsmanship at the National Oyster and Seafood Fair when he was only 19. Matt became director in 2009, and since then has taken the business further and further, gaining Elmbridge’s Best Independent Retailer of the Year award in 2013, and a star at the 2014 Great Taste Awards for the salmon which is smoked and hand-sliced at the shop. Matthew says: “It’s great to be able to bring tradition back to a village where local residents love to shop locally, just like in Claygate. I am fortunate to have been made to feel extremely welcome here in Horsell. I’m very ‘old school’ trained, and I believe in gaining trust and respect first and foremost from my customers. I was taught everything I know by the late Brian Bunkell, who was renowned in the trade, and where our name Williams and Bunkell comes from.” Visit www.surreyfishmonger.co.uk to find out more about us, the products that we sell and how to find our shops. hen a cow is calving or a sheep lambing, there is a danger that the uterus (womb) will follow the calf or lamb out of the cow or ewe. It is like taking off a sweater. It comes out inside out and it is a very serious condition. I was calving a cow out in the middle of a marsh with a veterinary student called Amy. It was too wet to get my van further than the gateway, so we carried the equipment we thought we would need. The cow was lying down exhausted on her brisket. She was trying to pass a normal-sized calf but it had its head back. We gave her an epidural anaesthetic to anaesthetise her back end, so although she could no longer feel anything, she could still do some pushing. We managed to get the calf out and were delighted; it was still alive but not very lively. I left Amy rubbing the calf with an old towel after we had
18 Looklocal Magazine - May 2015
cleared the mucus from its nose and mouth. I went to examine the cow to see that she was not torn. Disaster. She was starting to push her womb out. I shouted to Amy to hold the womb in while I ran to the van to get a big ‘Buhner’ stitching needle and some white uterine tape. I pushed the big needle through the anaesthetised vulva and threaded the tape. I then went to put tension on the tape, only to find I had threaded Amy’s blond hair through the needle instead of the tape. She was being drawn to the backside of the cow! All was well in the end, with a cow happily licking its calf without a veterinary student stuck to its backend. Luckily, Amy scrubbed up well and we are still friends. So, if you have problems with a cow calving, please ring Green Counties Vets. You will always get a proper farm vet, not a small animal vet in disguise, & we will try not to leave anyone stitched to your cow.

ON S AT U R DAY 1 6 T H M AY AT 8 . 0 0 P M Since their dynamic young Musical Director, Jonathan Kilhams, took the baton in April last year, the ever-popular Weybridge Male Voice Choir has gone from strength to strength. Last year, our Spring Concert was the very first big concert with the choir that Jonathan performed and it was a great success for the audience, the choir and for Jonathan himself. As they left, the sell-out audience showed their appreciation, digging deep for Sam Beare Hospice in the retiring collection. This year’s concert will be even better. Our programme is very varied, including songs from musical shows, spirituals, Welsh hymns, traditional songs and ballads, plus choral arrangements of popular modern numbers; and at least half of the choir’s programme will be different from last year, including some well-known pieces arranged by Johnny himself for the choir. When the men of Weybridge Male Voice Choir take to the concert stage, they never fail to entertain. To be one of them looks fun and is fun.
Nearly everyone loves the variety of Male Voice choir singing, with its spine-tingling four part harmonies and great contrasts, from quietly reflective to full-throated choruses. And Weybridge Male Voice Choir are entertaining and accomplished local exponents. Ask anyone who has been to one of our performances.
WE ARE DELIGHTED THIS YEAR TO WELCOME AWARD WINNING CHOIRS FROM HAMPTON SCHOOL. ‘Voices of Lions’ are a male voice choir of 30 young singers. They were finalists in Choir of the Year 2014 (two appearances on BBC Radio 3) & The Voice Festival 2015. They have a wide repertoire and present songs from many different genres: pop classics, show tunes, spirituals, traditional songs and barbershop. The Voices of Lions will be making their third appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe this year with their highly-acclaimed show.
The Hamptones is a barbershop group drawn from the Voices of Lions. Finalists in the Voice Festival, they make regular appearances at local events and venues, including the Rose Theatre. Repertoire includes traditional barbershop, jazz standards and Disney! The Hamptones often write their own arrangements and are regulars at quiz nights, performing for the ‘guess the intro’ round. Hampton Boys’ Choir consists of the treble and alto voices in Hampton School, plus several existing choral scholars at the Chapel Royal. They perform a wide variety of music from popular ballads and up tempo numbers to traditional choral repertoire. So what more could you want? Great singing and entertainment from men, young and old, who love singing and have fun singing.
Tickets are bound to be in demand. So make sure to get yours early!! Tickets £10 from 01252 326514 or online at www.weybridgemvc.org.uk Also from St James’ Parish Centre, Weybridge on weekday mornings from 30th April
A retiring collection will be made for the Sam Beare Hospice, Weybridge
GARDEN
H O U S E K E E P I N G
It’s time to get to grips with a little garden housekeeping so that our favourite outside space doesn’t turn itself into an overgrown jungle.
The grass will be starting to grow actively now, but don’t be tempted to lower the blades of your mower. Mow just often enough to stop the grass growing away, & don’t cut the grass too short, as you’ll starve the roots of vital nutrients. Moss - If there are huge patches of bare soil where moss has been removed, buy a patch pack of grass seed from garden centre & re-seed, carefully. My trick for success is to water the area first, broadcast the seed, walk over it to press it down, cover with a thin layer of compost & water again gently. Weeds - Continue to look out for lawn weeds, and dig them out before they have time to flower & set seed. As the weather warms up, you could begin to use a selective weed-killer, (such as Verdone) which you’ll find in any good garden centre. Read & follow the label instructions carefully. To remove thicker-leafed weed grasses, cut a cross into each clump before mowing, which will stop it in its tracks. For the rest of the grasscutting season, make sure that your mower blades are not too low: the finer grasses will develop & squeeze the ryegrass out. You can help by varying the direction of the cut each time you mow. Hedges - Hedges containing small leafed plants such as box, privet, hawthorn & conifers can be pruned, using hand shears or powered hedge trimmer. Don’t worry about any untidy ends, as the hedge will soon rejuvenate to cover
over any rough edges. The large-leafed hedges, such as laurel, aucuba & the like, should be pruned individually, using hand secateurs. Using shears might do the job quicker, but you’ll end up with half-cut foliage, which will look unsightly & leave the plant open to infection. After pruning, give your hedge an application of general fertiliser to help it recover from the shock of surgery, & don’t forget to water it well & regularly. Hanging baskets - There is a huge range of plants suitable for a colourful display, but if you are looking for a change from the usual trailing petunias, why not plant up a tumbling tomato plant with some basil thrown in for good measure? Start by placing the basket on top of a plastic bucket to give it a firm base. Line the sides with moss or any of the artificial basket liners available in good garden centres. Place a cut circle of thick plastic with the odd hole in it, over the bottom. ‘Hundreds & Thousands’ or ‘Tumbler’ are both good tomato varieties to use, & you need only a single plant per basket. Keep the plant well watered, & as soon as the fruits begin to swell, add in a liquid tomato food (such a Tomorite) each week. Don’t put hanging baskets outside until the danger of frost has passed. We always reckon that the long wait for a bonny new baby is well worthwhile. And if, when it arrives,it is cute and appealing, the joy is unbounded. That was the case with Fiat’s new 500, the re-born iconic babycar, which in its first year reached sales numbers of 222,000 and has just gone on and on and on, hitting 44,005 in the UK alone last year. Global sales now stand at 1.5m and the UK total is 220,000. So, what’s its appeal? Plenty, from style to value for money. The figure for the bargain-buy that enchants is guaranteed to grow even more when Fiat stretches its frontiers farther abroad In celebration of its re-birth, 50 years on from designer Dante Giacosa’s original 50s classic 500, the Italian company threw parties around the world for owners from Japan, Europe and South Africa. I joined in with a loaned pearly white model, encircled about its waistline with the colours of the Italian flag - and it was as at home in Milan’s stop-start streets as it was at 90-plus mph on the motorways and the tight, twisty lanes around Lake Como to Bellagio and the superb Hotel Grand Villa Serbelloni.
And I covered the same ground again the other week in the latest Lounge offering, a re-run of absolute pleassure on the go. My 1.2-litre Lounge model, an £11,315 funky little charmer, nestled cosily alongside the Ferraris and Porsches in the Serbelloni’s lakeside car park with as much eye-catching allure as any of the supercars. Okay, because of its invasive road noise on the motorways, it may not be the transport you would choose to drive top to bottom across Europe, despite its generous mpg, but it sure is just the car you’d like to have when you were at journey’s end. Regular readers will note I have gone from the sublime in the shape of the Maybach to the meticulous. Total opposites they may be, but for punching their weight in their specific categories, they cannot be beaten. Safety in all models of the
500 is superb - all have front, side, curtain and knee airbags which helped it to a re-assuring five-star top rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Its retro appeal is enhanced by 14 colour choices, four engine types, three metallic, eight pastel and a selection of seven alloy wheel patterns. Sticker kits, hubcaps and vivid badges mean you can customise the car to your liking, however bizarre your fancy. The four-seater cockpit is legroomier than you would imagine, looking at its diminutive 3.5-metre length from the outside, and the clever clogs Fiat designers have been astute in maximising its minimism. After I’d enjoyed the test car, I was so impressed I bought one, then another which I am currently running in company of, it seems, hundreds of others around Surrey.. And joy of joys to penny pinchers like me, the experts forecast that, after three years, I will get back at least half of what I paid for it. What more could you ask? Specification: Lounge three door 1.2-litre. BHP 69. Top speed 99mph. 0-62 in 12.9s. Fuel 58mpg. Price £11,315.

Ever since I can remember, women have recorded some of the best-loved and iconic songs of all time, & nowhere has the female voice made more of an impact than in country music. Long before girls started taking on the guys in the chart parade, women have played a big part in telling their own stories in song, of lovers, loners & losers. It was way back in 1924 in New York City that Aunt Samantha & Eva Davis wrote & recorded the songs known as ‘mountain music’ which influenced, inspired & gave the confidence to thousands more ladies to sing their way into our hearts to this very day. A brand new collection of some of the most enduring country hits sung by women is now available on a terrific new compilation of country, entitled The First Ladies of Country. You’ll find classics like ‘Crazy’, the Willie Nelson track made famous by the original spice girl, Patsy Cline, & of course the one & only Dolly Parton is represented here with ‘Jolene’ which Dolly, from her base in Nashville, once told me was inspired by meeting a young red-headed fan of hers. You’ll also hear Tammy Wynette, Lynn Anderson & other gals whose own lives became a bit of a soap opera & added even more of an identity to their massive selling hits. Crystal Gayle, who has the longest hair of anyone I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing, is part of this collection with ‘Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue’,& her sister, Loretta Lynn, who I also had the opportunity to talk to, tells her own true story of ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’. The music of modern day country is featured on this album too from the likes of Carrie Underwood, & Miranda Lambert to Kelly Clarkson & First Aid Kit. Gee, all this talk of country music is gonna make me change into some cowboy boots, kick back & turn the music up.

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson. From the bestselling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world’s most underappreciated forces: shame. For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know, they’re being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job. A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. The silent majority is getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people’s faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control. Simultaneously powerful

and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws - and the very scary part we all play in it. This man deserves a mention. Bob Harris, Still Whispering After All These Years. I have early memories watching Bob on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the seventies and I still listen to him today some 40 years later on Radio 2. Here he tells his story of the young, passionate music fan who moved to London determined to make music his life, to being presented with an OBE for his services to music broadcasting. Much like his musical heroes, Bob’s personal life has had somewhat of a rock ‘n’ roll vibe: he has been married three times, gone bankrupt, fought cancer, weathered a very public spat with a fellow DJ and has had to revamp his career four times. Throughout all these times, however, his love
Book Voucher to WIN see p37 of music and talent for broadcasting has endured. The Whispering Years is a frank, vibrant and inspiring tale of one of the most influential names on the radio and reveals the story of the man behind the voice. Anthony Beevor. Ardennes 1944. Beevor’s new book describes the German’s “last gamble” offensive in Belgium which involved more than a million men and became the greatest battle of the war in Western Europe. American troops, taken by surprise, found themselves fighting two German panzer armies. Belgian civilians fled, whole villages were destroyed. Panic spread even to Paris. Whilst many American soldiers were compelled to retreat or surrender, others held on heroically, creating breakwaters which slowed the German advance. The harsh winter conditions, the difficulty of the hilly and river valley terrain, and the savagery of the battle became comparable to the eastern front. And after massacres by the Waffen-SS, even American generals approved when their men shot down surrendering Germans. The Ardennes was the battle which finally broke the back of the Wehrmacht. Out in paperback this month are: Human Universe by Brian Cox. The history of the human race from two million years ago to today. A celebration of our outrageous fortune in existing at all! Anger Is An Energy – My Life Uncensored by John Lydon. A look back at the life of Johnny Rotten Us by David Nicholls. The new novel from the man
who made us cry with One Day. The Children Act by Ian McEwan. The latest novel from the acclaimed Mr. McEwan. Funny Girl by Nick Hornby. A captivating portrait of youthful exuberance and creativity set in the swinging sixties. The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher by Hilary Mantel. Ten stories in settings that range from Saudi Arabia to Greece to London, and the title tale caused controversy in its depiction of an assassination attempt on Margaret Thatcher. Whenever somebody comes into the shop looking for a good read for young boys, I often recommend The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall. It has just been republished to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Young Chas McGill has the second-best collection of war souvenirs in Garmouth, and he desperately wants it to be the best. When he stumbles across the remains of a German bomber crashed in the woods, its shiny black machine gun still intact, he grabs his chance. Soon he’s masterminding his own war effort, with dangerous and unexpected results. David Walliams has very smartly aimed his formidable authoring talents at a younger generation. His bestselling picture book, The Slightly Annoying Elephant, is now available in paperback. What’s big, blue, bossy, and turns up uninvited? What else but a slightly annoying elephant!

urrey resident and internationally acclaimed actor James Cosmo, star of Braveheart, Narnia and Game of Thrones, has joined up with local charity Street Child Africa to cycle across Zambia this September 2015. Cosmo who plays tough, resilient characters onscreen is now taking on a real-life challenge to change the lives of children who struggle to survive on the streets every day. Cosmo is raising essential funds for a local charity that supports vulnerable street children in Zambia by providing safe shelters, access to first aid, education, training and supporting families & communities. Street Child Africa is offering an exclusive opportunity to fellow local people to ride alongside celebrity James Cosmo, before offering places to the wider public. Will you consider swapping your day-to-day reality to ride alongside a fellow local and celebrity on the streets of Zambia this September? We really hope that, like James Cosmo, you will come onboard with this exciting challenge to support street children. Cosmo explains “Being involved in this bike ride for street children is a real life challenge for me. I’ve not cycled since I was a lad, so it’s going to be tough. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be doing it. The courage these children show, out on the streets fending for themselves alone is incredible. That’s why Street Child Africa’s work is so
important. Let’s give these kids a chance”. Sheila Lutchanah, Head of Fundraising at Street Child Africa, commented: “We’ve had a lot of fun organising this cycle challenge. To be able to take our supporters on such an adventure in one of the countries where we work with street children is fantastic. Having the backing of James Cosmo and our local supporters will greatly benefit the lives of the children we work with on the streets.” Will you join James Cosmo in this challenge? Cosmo himself has faced many challenges in his life. He remembers the days of struggling in a one bedroom flat with his wife Annie and baby. Then he received his big break - a call from actor Mel Gibson, asking him to play Campbell with him in the film Braveheart. By taking part in this sponsored challenge, supporters are showing the world that we all have challenges in our lives but that they can be overcome. Cycle Zambia takes you on- and off-road through rural southern Zambia, finishing at the spectacular Victoria Falls. Organised through Discover Adventure, the challenge starts on Friday 25th September and finishes Saturday 3rd October 2015. To take up this exclusive opportunity to join Cycle Zambia and change a street child’s life, email Zoe or call 020 8972 9820 by 10th April. https://www.justgiving.com/jamescosmo/

et’s face it. We all have our moments. We’re doing okay, being nice, getting on with our lives and suddenly we’re triggered. Wham! Before we know it, we’ve morphed into a person we really don’t want to be. Often we feel justified in our anger/upset/frustration and believe it’s up to the other person to put things right. The only problem with this attitude is that it might take a long time or never happen. In the meantime, the relationship suffers and WE are the ones consumed by our negative emotions. Allowing negative emotions to run riot inside our body is like drinking from a cup labeled POISON. Why would we do that to ourselves? As we consume the poison, the poison – anger, resentment, hatred – literally consumes us. And it’s hard to do anything kind or constructive when we’re consumed by hostility. So what’s the answer?
Moving from War to Peace I recently assisted Chloe O’Sullivan of Halcyon Global on a workshop called “War To Peace”, a powerful methodology she developed to help people transform relationships from conflict to harmony. The methodology demonstrates that almost anything we do can be done from one of two ways of operating: at War (in the Red) or at Peace (in the Green). What leads us to being at War or at Peace are our Perceptions, Beliefs and Emotional State. We go to War because someone has done something that annoys or hurts us, and we begin to perceive the person as being lazy, mean, wrong etc. Consequently, we behave in a certain way towards him or her: for example we may become cold or adopt a special tone of voice. The other person then reacts to the way we are being, and we get into a vicious circle.

Here are a few tips from War to Peace that might help us to respond differently next time we’re at loggerheads with someone. It isn’t about suppressing strong feelings, but becoming more resourceful in dealing with conflict: • Become aware that you’re ‘in the Red’ – and begin noticing the stories you are telling yourself about the other person • Change your Emotional State – through your posture, what you focus your thoughts on and feel-good activities • Challenge your Perceptions and Beliefs – if you weren’t being hooked by that behaviour, what else could it mean? If you were full of compassion for the other person, how would you respond to him or her? • Carry out an action, however small, as soon as possible to help the relationship.
In peace,

PS – I strongly recommend experiencing War to Peace for yourself (see www.halcyonglobal.co.uk). In the meantime, try to catch yourself going in the Red and become aware of what you’re telling yourself.
