Hello & welcome to Look Local in November! I’m in the process of embracing the winter! Not always easy, but it has to be done. Walking twice a day with my four-legged furry companion certainly helps to lift the spirits and I highly recommend a daily stroll

if you can fit it in. We enjoyed a lovely time at The Elmbridge Food Festival recently and hope you did too, if you went along. We share some images from the event. Whether we like it or not, the festive season is just around the corner and there are lots of local fairs and events coming up. We include a selection of details which I hope you find useful, and that you enjoy supporting local people and local businesses this Christmas. Fireworks to look forward to as well this month... or not, depending on your species! Again, details of a few local displays can be found within. And of course, we must all remember to remember on 11th November.

See what’s on in and around Weybridge in November.

Have a great month, all,

GORGEOUS GROOMING Autumn is here, and as the season changes, so does your dog’s coat. As they shed their summer coat and grow a new layer for winter, so the grooming challenges begin. Owners with long-haired double-coated dogs, such as labradors, golden retrievers and huskies, will know about this more than anyone! Whilst moulting is Nature’s way of regulating your dog’s temperature, a little helping hand is most definitely needed when they live in your home, as opposed to outside in the wild, At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we have installed a brand new purpose-built dog grooming parlour recently and have recruited a highly-experienced head groomer. Here are her top five tips for keeping your dog looking gorgeous: 1. Invest in good grooming tools, such as a slicker brush, rake and comb. 2. Brush your dog regularly to ensure all unwanted dead hair is removed. Better in the brush than on your sofa. 3. Get into the habit of washing and drying dirty doggy paws after muddy walks. 4. Keep up-to-date with your flea treatment. 5. Book professional groomer appointments every 8-10 weeks for that extra special touch. “Having moved to Weybridge Eye Clinic last year, it has been lovely to see familiar faces from my 25 years of eye care in Weybridge”

Weybridge Eye Clinic is a friendly independent opticians, situated on Queens Rd next to Café Rouge. Our team is dedicated to giving you the highest standard of professional eye care. We provide an extensive eye examination using the latest technology, which allows early detection of eye conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Whilst we charge a fee for our comprehensive eye examination, some sight tests are FREE under the NHS.

Back to School Now the kids are back to school, it’s worth getting their eyes checked to ensure they are not missing out. It is important to protect your children’s eyes from as early as possible and regular checks will help us detect any issues. These tests are free under the NHS and recommended by schools for those children starting pre-school.

WHY THE

Gurkha Diner Do you need a

BOOKKEEPER? I am self-employed with 15yrs experience of:

A

s most of us know, Gurkhas are world famous soldiers, highly prized in the British Army and known for their bravery and courage. They come from the mountainous country of Nepal which nestles in the Himalayas, bordering Tibet in the North and India on its southern foothills. Nepal has many geographical regions and social influences and this is reflected in the preparation of the food, which varies from region to region. The common factor is the use of spices and flavourings, such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, peppers, chillies, cumin, coriander, cilantro and fresh herbs. Combined with the fact that produce at the Gurkha Diner is delivered daily, this means that the end result is superb! There are seasonal changes to their menu, the mark of truly fresh food, I always think. The chef at The Gurkha Diner does not use any artificial food colourings or flavourings. The food looks and tastes more natural than most, and even the mango chutney and the mint sauce served with crispy fresh poppadums is freshly and reassuringly home-made! This, and the friendly polite service and very comfortable surroundings, is why Look Local highly recommends Gurkha Diner for your gastronomical Indian pleasures!

Brigitte Trust volunteers visit each week, offering emotional support and carer respite in the home, alongside the care of the medical teams. This enables more people to stay at home for longer and gives family members time to share the complex feelings that serious illness brings. ith so many skin care options out there, it’s often hard to know which way to turn. One very well regarded and reputable choice is the Dermalogica range. With this in mind, I went along to meet Toni Renecal, owner of ‘Skin Talk’. Toni is a highly-trained Dermalogica practitioner and she kindly treated me to a very enjoyable treatment at her home salon in Cobham. The products felt very light and comfortable on my skin; from the pre-cleanse right through to final Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 hydrating moisturiser, the treatment

was wonderful. Toni has been trained to the highest standard & level and offers treatments either at her home salon or in the comfort of your own home. During the months of November & December, you will receive a lovely free gift with every first treatment. I came away with a skin care starter set, containing three items to set me off in the right direction! I have been using them since my visit and I must say my skin feels and looks better than it has for a while. Thank you so much, Toni. I really enjoyed my visit. Look Local... As the stabilising effects of various financial restrictions have been felt in the Prime Central London property market, Elmbridge continues to flourish and benefit from an established ‘ripple effect’ emanating from the Capital. Put simply, people love living here and we can only see that continuing.

In our Lettings department, we are finding that the highest proportion of applicants are from the home-grown market, where we have seen a strong resurgence in demand from professionals and families alike; an improved domestic economy, together with the excellent infrastructure that this highly attractive area provides is what lies behind the strong pricing and rental yields being achieved across Elmbridge. Put simply, people love living here and we can only see that continuing. For advice about Letting your property, please do get in touch or pop into our office on Queens Road, we would be delighted to see you.

It’s at this time of year when the nation’s favourite plant – the rose starts to wind down once more for the winter. Sad this may be, but now is a very good time to deal with rose blackspot, breaking the life cycle of the disease, to ensure your roses stay in better shape for the following year.

a

ROSE l k

The problem Rose blackspot is an extremely common and widespread fungal disease on most rose cultivars, as well as on wild roses. However, there are some cultivars that are partially resistant. Generalisations can be misleading, but certainly many of the older cultivars and proportionately more yellow than red or pink cultivars are susceptible to blackspot. When choosing new plants, this could be worth remembering. It’s a disease that’s allegedly more common in the South West of England and in Wales than in other industrialised areas of the country, due more to increased levels of atmospheric sulphur than post code discrimination. The fungal spores (or conidia) are produced on the actual black spots on the leaves, and are spread around by water splash, rain, tools or on hands and clothing. The disease thrives in warm moist conditions, and most early attacks come from those spores that have spent the winter in uncleared plant debris or in dormant buds. You’ll know if your plant has it if its leaves look anything like that in the photograph above. The remedy At this time of year, good garden hygiene plays a large part in keeping blackspot under control. You’ll go a long way in breaking the life cycle of this disease if you gather up the fallen leaves

28 Looklocal Magazine - November 2015

around the base of the plant. During the season, it’s important to pick off the worst affected leaves and dispose of them very carefully. Place them in a plastic bag and tie the top tightly. Leave the bag in the hot sun for a few days, and then put them into the dustbin or burn them. This should kill off the active organisms to prevent further infection. Under no circumstances put leaves affected by blackspot into your compost heap. I would recommend that you give your plants a good spray with Rose Clear Ultra, drizzling some around the soil at the base of the plant Next year, continue with a regular spraying programme of Rose Clear Ultra ready to use. Use the spray as insurance against attack, rather than as first aid when the problem has arisen. You’ll be able to get this in any good garden centre. Please read and follow the label instructions carefully. Added insurance There can be no doubt that a well-fed and watered plant is better able to withstand any onslaught from pests and diseases. As a long-term Beach Boys fan (and who isn’t?), I must recommend a film which documents the true life events surrounding the making of their brilliant 1966 album, Pet Sounds. Love and Mercy, which stars John Cusack as the angst-ridden genius, Brian Wilson, documents the life and times of a band of young brothers whose primary influence were the male harmony groups of the 1950s. In the mid-60s though, the driving force for the Wilson brothers was chart rivals, The Beatles, and after hearing their album, Rubber Soul, the BB’s prime composer, brother Brian, decided to hang up his surf board (not that he actually surfed) and dedicate his full attention to his own musical vision of the writing and recording of a long-player he aspired to release that he claimed would be “the best album ever made”, Pet Sounds. Along the way, as Love and Mercy documents, his own sanity was becoming a major concern for his nearest and dearest, and at times, the film takes us to the dark heart of a group in and out of the recording studio, as the boys tried to embrace ground-breaking songs that would go on to become classicss, such as Good Vibrations, Caroline No, Wouldn’t it be Nice, Sloop John B and many more, such as God Only Knows, a song that Paul McCartney called the “greatest song ever written”, and he should know! There’s no doubt that Pet Sounds is a masterpiece and a cry from the tortured soul of a man I’ve had the great fortune to get to know over the past few decades. Love and Mercy is without doubt one of the very greatest musical films of all time and I urge you to check it out.

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW FLAGSHIP BMW 7 SERIES

I have found another way to spell “luxury” when it comes to cars. It is quite simply... BMW. And more specifically, the 7-series, a masterpiece of a motor on the move upwards. It was launched UK-wise late October and I forecast it will put a scare into the hard-fought upmarket limo battleground. The brand new flagship 7-series is a brilliant re-hash of the model it replaces, bigger, better, even more efficient and loaded with the latest technical gadgetry. And, what’s more, it is a wee bit cheaper than its biggest, toughest competitor, the Mercedes-Benz S-class. My skinflint instincts, therefore, lean me towards the Bee-Em - but, in view of the vast improvement on its predecessor, the latest 7-series is superb value for money and enough of a hot-shot rival to worry Mercedes. Inside is a treat of luxurious wood veneers, plushy metallic surrounds, gizmos to blow your mind and satisfy the most geeky of us, with an

updated infotainment system that encompasses a touchscreen for the first time. As if the basic model was not roomy enough for four of the lengthiestlegged people, you can upgrade to the long wheelbase version which adds an extra 14cm to its stretch. Just to ensure ultra-comfort for those in the plushily spacious back-end, you can have electrically adjustable heated or cooled first-class lounge style seats. And how about this gimmick? A camera scrutinises your hand movements near the touchscreen and by simply wagging your fingers in its general direction, you can perform infotainment choices and functions, abracadbra-like. If you are not given to such showy handsignalled channel switching, there is a basic button display to do the job

instead. The whole atmosphere is one of hush-hush style, a gentle hum of an engine underpinning the refinement level and enabling the most confidentially-whispered tones from those sprawling in the back seats to be heard by those upfront. The BMW 7-series range topper’s feedback when you hoof its superbly smooth and responsive 3.0-litre diesel engine towards an inviting motorway’s distant horizon is a sheer joy of beneficial performance and un-bumpy response and its attack on the tighter corners and sharp bends has all the feel of a smaller, nippy car. BMW’s planners insist their largelimo customers prefer not too much change, and dodge any ideas of radicalisation, hence the new 7’s almost identical outward appearance to its older sibling. Underneath the profile, however, is a different story. A vast improvement. And a surefire seller. Specification: Model :BMW 7-series 730d.Engine:3.0-litre diesel. Speed: 155mph. 0-60mph in 6.1secs. BHP 265.MPG:60.1. Price: £64.530.

eal reindeer will return to Garsons at Esher on Saturday 21st November to delight animal lovers young and old and mark the beginning of the festive season. Staying at Garsons in their speciallybuilt stable, the reindeer can be visited every day until Christmas Eve, when they will return to help Santa on the busiest night of the year. “The arrival of the reindeer is one of the highlights of the Christmas season for us at Garsons,” says director Ben Thompson. “They’re such beautiful, gentle animals, no-one who meets them can help but love them. We’re so pleased we’ve been able to bring them back to Garsons again this year, and we can’t wait for everyone to come and visit them.” The reindeer will be looked after by specially-trained reindeer helpers, who will be on hand to answer questions and reveal fascinating reindeer facts. The animals will enjoy a walk around the farm every day, and also their favourite reindeer feed which gives them all the vitamins and nutrients they need in order to be ready to guide Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. “The welfare of the reindeer is our most important concern, and we always work hard to make sure they are

C H R I S T M A S

comfortable, healthy and happy while they’re with us,” Ben explains. “Many people will never have seen reindeer before, even though they’re such an iconic part of Christmas. It’s great that by visiting the reindeer at Garsons, we can help children and adults learn about them.” There is no charge to visit the reindeer, but a collection at the enclosure will raise money for Garsons’ chosen local charities. In 2014, generous donations from Garsons’ customers raised over £8,000 for The Rainbow Centre, Fareham and Woking & Sam Beare Hospices. Visitors will also have a chance to meet Garsons’ Christmas Prince and Princess, and children can enjoy other festive activities at the farm, including writing a letter to Santa and a colouring competition – the winner will receive a personal letter and gift from Santa himself. Information: Open from 21st November 2015 to 24th December 2015. Opening times: 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm Sunday, 10am to 1pm Christmas Eve. ou’ve probably seen children with their hands over their ears chanting “Lalalalala, I’m not listening” when they don’t want to hear something. Maybe you did it yourself. I know I did. But more importantly, how often do we still do this as adults? OK, maybe not with the visual and sound effects. But we can be so good at blocking out messages we don’t want to hear that often we don’t even know we’re doing it. It’s a learned behaviour that has probably protected and served us over the years, but like many habits, it robs us of our ability to choose what’s best for us in the moment. After hitting the ‘send’ key on last month’s article, I wondered if my podiatrist, whom I trusted and respected, had indeed continued with some more manageable alternatives to her initial advice, but it was too late and I couldn’t hear them because I’d already flipped into the internal equivalent of

“Lalalalala, I’m not listening!” Sometimes, when something is overwhelming, for whatever reason, we shut down. We stop listening. And we stop being at Choice. There are a number of ways our Lalalalala state can be activated: • When we’re triggered or emotionally overloaded – through surprise or upset or fear or anger. Our senses are overwhelmed and automatically switch off and block out anything else that comes along • When we have a fixed idea or opinion we’re emotionally attached to. If we believe we already know the answer or the truth, it can be hard to hear anything that challenges it, anything different, so we may stop processing the new information and just stay in our familiar story • When we’re too focused on something else – which

is not always a bad thing. For example, even when I’m deeply engaged by a radio play while I’m driving, if a car cuts across me, my attention will automatically focus on the road and I’ll stop listening to the play. But that’s another story … The first, most powerful thing you can do when you notice yourself tuning out is exactly that … notice you are doing it. This may take practice. Get to know your Lalalalala signals. How will you catch yourself when you have tuned out? Noticing you are doing it is the place where you can switch from Lalalalala to Choice. Don’t you want to have a choice about what you hear and what you do with that information? Had I not tuned out, I probably would have asked my podiatrist enough questions to understand my options and how they could work for me, saving me years of discomfort.

Stay tuned...
