turning back the clocks later this month, an abundance of autumn leaves and shiny conkers will fill our village any day now, I’m sure! There’s certainly a lot to read about inside Look Local this month: handy tips from Bruce of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care about owning a new puppy (very handy as I just so happen to have one of those, see front cover!), David ‘Kid’ Jensen tells us about a new musical talent

in Music Matters, and we share our photographic montage of the recent Brooklands Family Fun Day, a great feature about the Talking Newspaper, and lots of other local titbits too. I’m off to the garden now with my umbrella and wellies to crack on with the puppy housetraining. She’s doing very well! Next training project has to be to persuade her that she really isn’t a mole! My poor lawn!

SEVEN LETTERS
02/09/2015 14:35
Rian Flatley’s play Seven Letters is a poignant story of three spirited elderly women whose circumstances have brought them together. Their past lives are told through flashbacks, graphic monologues and song. The hope is that everyone will recognise that each old person was indeed once young and vibrant, with hopes and dreams.
‘It is a witty & thought-provoking story, powerfully told, & sometimes uncomfortably raw.’ Performances: St James’ Hall Weybridge KT13 8DN
Friday 16th October at 7.30 pm, & Saturday 17th at 2:00 pm & 7:30 pm To reserve tickets: please call 01932 853709 or email sevenletters2015@hotmail.com

TALKING
N E W S P A P E R
FACES A GREAT MANY NEW CHANGES
I
n the last few months, a great many new changes have been faced by the long-standing Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper, which was first produced in 1975. Following continuing health problems, Chris Gilroy tendered his resignation from the post of Chairman, which he had held for seven years, having previously represented his fellow listeners on the Executive Committee since 1999. At the Annual General Meeting, he was unanimously appointed Life President of the Talking Newspaper.
He has been succeeded as Chairman by Jonathan Fisher, who is also blind and runs this Talking Newspaper’s Helpline service. In addition to his many interests in action for disabled people in Runnymede and Surrey, Jonathan teaches Braille to other visually impaired people. Following the resignation as Hon. Secretary of Jackie Scobling after five years in the post, the Executive Committee appointed Mrs. Nicola Maxwell as her successor. Nicola worked part-time as an Employment Consultant and has continued her studies, adding

a European Computer Driving Licence and a Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Certificate to her degree in Business Studies and her Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources Management. Prior to this, Nicola worked as a Human Resources Manager. During the past months, in addition to the sad loss of David Warner, Production Manager, several volunteers have left. The change of production date from Thursday to Friday, due to the closure of the Surrey Herald and the reliance on the Surrey Advertiser for material, led to
the resignation of volunteers who were no longer able to help us, as well as others who have left the area. This has caused a serious problem in our numbers and we particularly need volunteers on Fridays to

PUPPY LOVE Puppies are cute and hard to resist, which is why many dog owners choose them over older dogs. But turning your playful puppy into a well-rounded ‘grown-up’ takes time and patience.
Where to start? Puppy socialisation. The core period for this and the whole puppy learning process is from birth to 14-16 weeks. And for the first 6-8 weeks (a puppy should not leave its mother before then), it’s very much down to its mum and siblings. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we take on puppies from 12 weeks old and ensure this steep early life learning curve is followed through in three key steps: 1. Interaction with other dogs to develop social skills, coupled with plenty of time to chill-out and rest. Puppies mustn’t be over-exercised, as their bodies are still developing. Too much activity can be as harmful as not enough. 2. Several small meals throughout the day. Just like babies, puppies need to eat little and often to ensure they have all the nutrition required to grow into healthy adult dogs. Feeding them regularly and separately is also a valuable training tool, as the best-behaved puppy gets fed first and the others soon learn that good behaviour is rewarded. 3. Lots of human contact so they recognise their human handlers as leader of the pack. This is not just a good social skill but a safe one too, as all dogs are so much easier to train and develop when they are puppies. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

magical princess spinning mystical tales, a spooky treasure trail, plus homegrown pumpkins galore ... sounds like a spellbinding Hallowe’en is in store at familyowned Garsons of Esher this half term. So grab your broomsticks and fly over to Winterdown Road for stacks of spooky fun, including the chance to pick your own pumpkin fresh from the field (weather permitting of course). They will also be selling pumpkins and squashes in all shapes and sizes at the award-winning farm shop, along with delicious handmade sausages, toffee apples and spooky chocolates perfect for trick or treaters. Here’s our round-up of the goings-on at Garsons this Hallowe’en: On Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th October, the Pumpkin Princess will be making her annual fleeting appearance, floating around the garden centre, sprinkling magic and overseeing free cupcake decorating sessions in the restaurant (9am - 11am, while stocks last). also be on hand to guide young ghosts and ghouls as they head off for the Monster Hunt, which is running throughout half term (Monday to Friday). This free instore treasure trail requires cunning, as youngsters are charged with detecting clues sneakily hidden in Garsons farm shop and garden centre. One lucky prize winner will be drawn at random. And if all this isn’t enough to leave the most eager ghost gasping, Garsons is also conjuring up a free colouring competition because, after all, every spook loves practising a spot of wizardry with the colouring pencils. Three lucky winners will be picked to win wicked prizes. • 26th – 31st October: Free Monster Hunt • 26th – 28th October 9am to 12pm: Pumpkin Princess floats around the Garden Centre • 26th – 28th October 9am – 11am: free cupcake decorating sessions in Garsons Restaurant • Pick Your Own Pumpkins while stocks last (and weather permitting – please check website) or until 1st November when PYO closes for the season • Latest updates at www.Garsons.co.uk Garson Farm, Winterdown Road, West End, KT10 8LS

irginia Water based ‘The Wonderyears’ are delighted to have been invited to perform to raise funds for Surrey North Area Cruse. With an average age of 70 and the oldest at 90, The Wonderyears are the UK’s oldest Seniors Rock Chorus and Band. The traditional view of grandparents is soon shattered when they start to belt out hard rock and punk as well as contemporary pop. Since their formation in 2007, The Wonderyears have not only performed in many venues in the UK but have also been filmed for national TV and were quarter finalists in Britain’s Got Talent 2012. The Wonderyears have raised many £thousands for charities. Founder and Musical Director, Dave Thomas, says that ‘life truly begins at 70.’ ‘The Wonderyears demonstrate very powerfully that just because you qualify for a bus pass and a winter fuel allowance, you are not ‘over the hill.’ ‘Their performances are both inspirational and entertaining and leave audiences with the feel good factor.’ CRUSE Bereavement Care Surrey North Area has its office base in Chertsey and covers the Boroughs of Runnymede, Spelthorne, Elmbridge and Woking.
32 Looklocal Magazine - October 2015
They offer support, advice and information to children, young people and adults when someone dies and to enhance society’s care of bereaved people. Surrey North Area needs to obtain funding of £30,000 per year to operate. This is made up of some grant funding and donations from clients who have received support but the shortfall has to be made up from fund raising. Last year their volunteers gave over 10,000 hours to help 329 people in the community. This was an increase of 28% on the previous year, a testimony to the need for this service. They provide One to One support, Group Support and Children and Young Person’s support. Plans are also being drawn up to provide email and telephone support. Please show your support by going along to this concert on November 13th 2015 at 7.30pm at Magna Carta School, Thorpe Rd, Staines on Thames, TW18 3HJ. Tickets are £10.00 per person available from the CRUSE Office at 6,The Sainsbury Centre, Chertsey, KT16 9AG or by calling 01932 571167 / 07752 396780 or email to surreynorth@cruse.org.uk

One of the great things about my chosen vocation is being able to champion new, rising and exciting talent and pass on their music to friends and family through my radio programmes. One such emerging star who caught my eyes and ears is the wonderful British singer/songwriter, Ella Eyre, who first found fame when collaborating with Rudimental in 2013 on their number-one selling hit, Waiting All Night, which also went on to win a Brit award for Best British Single of the Year. In 2014, she won a prestigious MOBO Award for best newcomer. Just 21 years old, she has a voice as striking as her huge hair-do. She tells us that her musical influences include Lauryn Hill, Etta James and Basement Jaxx. However, listening to her sing, she puts me in mind of Adele and Amy Winehouse. Her real name is Ella McMahon and her first love was competitive swimming before finding success and plaudits as a singer. She was raised in Ealing, West London, and is of Afro-Jamaican, Maltese and Scottish descent. She studied at Millfield School and attended the world-famous BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology where she studied musical theatre. The BRIT School was also responsible for launching the careers of the aforementioned Adele and Amy. In fact, it was her talents as a songwriter that gave her early commercial success and this venture led to her being discovered and encouraged as a performer in her own right. She found thousands of new fans when supporting the likes of Take That and Olly Murs a few months ago. As if all these credits weren’t enough, Ella also became the face of the advertising campaign for Emporio Armani Diamonds perfume. However, her most recent triumph is the recent release of her excellent debut album, Feline, which is bound to accelerate her ultimate destination of global awareness. Ella embarks on a UK tour in November, so try and catch her while you can.

They may be late on the specialist scene, but with the CX3, Mazda has played a crucial game of catch-up in the cut-throat business of crossovers. It has come up with a sweetly handling and good-looking rival to the established and puzzlingly named Nissan Juke, Citroen Cactus and Vauxhall Mokka. What delayed them isn’t clear, and the Japanese crack at the compact crossover market may be a latecomer, but it is a sweetie of a small and useful SUV well worth the wait. And the money. The company’s styling studio ventured a design to rival the existing competition crossovers, and when the management first set eyes on the full-sized clay model, they did not falter for a second and ordered its immediate build. And the cut-throat area of crossover auto sales was quickly invaded by a slicker, smarter-looking rival to the Jukes, Cactuses and Mokkas...namely the CX3, baby brother to the CX5. Nothing was lost in the downsizing, quite the opposite. The newest challenger on the cylinder block in
the hard-fought crossover class is the personification of style, economy and practicality. What’s more, it is fun to drive. Even Porsche-owning Trophy Wife, a fussy and readily critical driver if a car fails to meet her preferences, was impressed by its firm feeling and crisply slick action six-speed gearbox. To say nothing of the chic styling and ample boot room for her Michael Kors cocktailwear on a party weekend away. It is not wanting on cabin space either, with enough legroom for four grown-ups and a go-any height driver’s equably adjustable seat. The general concensus of opinion among we so-called motoring experts is that the pint-sized CX3, the desirable sibling city car to the CX5, is a trendy and worthy top points
earner. Frugal, too. But in efforts to keep its price tag under £20,000, and this is not meant to be a picky moan, Mazda has perhaps over-indulged in too many plastic variants that could give it a rather cheapskate inside appearance to some buyers. The kit levels are definitely up on some of its rivals and even the entry level models enjoy benefits such as cruise control and touchscreen infotainment, power windows and door locks with a remote keyless entry facility. Because of its hard ride and susceptibility to sharp bumps, it is maybe not as at home on arduous motorway treks as it is in the city, but then you would probably buy it for the second purpose, in-town short commutes, rather than the first, longer and more arduous runs. Overall, in a sector where looks count for such a lot, the petite CX3 is a bargain buy. A winner.... Specification: my favourite, 2.0 2WD SE Nav. BHP118.Max speed 119mph. Zero-to-60mph 9.0secs.Mpg 47.8. Price £18,195.

NEW CAMPAIGN ’AP-PEALING’ LAUNCHED

oking & Sam Beare Hospices have launched their new campaign ‘ap-pealing’ for new volunteers to join their existing bunch of supporters who give their time on a regular basis to support the local charity. Under the headline ‘One of your five-a-day’, Volunteers Services Manager Mary Morgan hopes to convey the fun and well-being people gain from volunteering and will in the coming months be out and about in her banana suit to spread the message.
“We have a fantastic group of volunteers helping us, but as we’re expanding our services to reach more people, we need to increase the support in our teams. This campaign is specifically focussed on recruiting more fundraising and retail volunteers,” explains Mary, and adds “volunteering is fun, rewarding and purposeful, good for you, good for us and good for everyone!” Helping others is scientifically proven to lead to enhanced well-being and it also benefits the charity, which provides hospice care free of charge through-
out Northwest Surrey. Every year, they support around 5,500 local people and their families and look after patients in their own homes, in the hospice buildings, as well as through day care services and counselling. Volunteers play a major part in raising funds for the clinical services and the Hospices are therefore looking for people to support their fundraising and shop teams. If you would like join the Hospices’ volunteer team, then please contact Volunteers Services on 01483 881750 or email volunteer@wsbhospices.co.uk

any years ago, if something went wrong in my life, I wanted someone to fix it – and that someone wasn’t me!
For example, I was once referred to a podiatrist. There were structural problems from the tips of my toes to the tops of my hips (try saying that very quickly ten times!) and I ended up with insoles individually moulded to the shape of my insteps. As far as I was concerned, I’d paid for expert advice plus far-too-expensive insoles, and that was that. The podiatrist had other ideas. Apparently, my gluteal muscles were much too weak and I had to strengthen them. She got me to clench them as I walked. “How often do I have to do this?” I asked.
“Every time your feet hit the ground.” “You’re kidding!” I was aghast. How would I remember to do that? (Or “bother to do that”, my inner voice corrected.) Wasn’t my life hectic and stressful enough without this? And so, having decided it couldn’t happen, it didn’t. What never occurred to me, and what my podiatrist didn’t mention, was that it’s easier to start with baby steps – or in this instance, with just a few steps at a time. If she’d said to me: “Just start by trying to remember to clench your glutes for five steps in your living room, and when you get comfortable with that, do it for five minutes every day while you’re out and about,” I would probably have given it a go. I might even have found it quite easy and done it more than once a day. Maybe I would also have extended the timeframe and done it for half an hour while walking to work. And if not, at least I would have started and given it a go for five minutes a

C O N F E S S I O N day most days, or whenever I remembered. Which is a lot better than the nothing that I ended up with. I look back on that with a mixture of amusement and embarrassment. Many years later, after I discovered some very useful life lessons through my coach training, I started to exercise my glutes the way she’d advised. It felt so good to be doing something to help myself. Sometimes I remembered, sometimes I forgot. But little by little it started to become a habit. Occasionally, I have clients like that, people who are willing to pay for coaching but who want me to fix their problems without them making changes in their lives. It doesn’t work! By taking responsibility for our own lives, we can change any aspect we choose – one step at a time.
What step will you choose?
