Welcome to October

The autumn is really here, and the weather seems to be as unpredictable as ever. What a strange year it been so far with regard to that! Rain in July, heat-wave weekends in September. I wonder what this month has in store for us all? I have seen reports that we are in for a ‘very harsh winter’ but to be honest, I don’t pay much attention to any such predictions these days, they always seem to be wrong! We have a couple of lovely local charities asking for help this month; Elmbridge CAN who give very much needed help to Syrian Refugee families are in need of volunteers. I don’t think O YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS BRILLIANT AT ALOUD? weREADING can even begin to understand what these people have been through, but with the help and support of Elmbridge CAN might be someone in your family, your babysitter, atheir nursery nurse, school lives are beginning to come together again. There are many opportunities to aloud. help, so if you are able and willing please do see teacher or volunteer or anyone else you love listening to reading page P20 for more details. It will make a huge difference to so ’d like to hear about them and what makes them so good at reading aloud. many. Marie Curie are looking for volunteer fundraisers. An absolutely amazing charity who offer support at such difficult times. Maybe this is your calling? See page 20 for details. As well as these, you can find our regular Volunteering Opportunities on page 30. Any time you can offer will be so appreciated. Remember that the clocks will be going back on Sunday 27th October, so let’s all enjoy the last few weeks of light evenings in 2019.

This autumn The Lightbox will present the new Upper Gallery exhibition The Outside and The Inside which brings together fascinating and diverse works from two collections – ‘The Ingram Collection’ and ‘Outside In’. The Outside and The Inside (26 October 2019 – 5 January 2020) provides a unique opportunity to discover new artists and unseen work, offering fresh perspectives and a chance to question the nature of art itself. Fadra Velic, Machine for Cutting Grass © The Artist Ria Pratt, It’s a dog’s life II, Outside In Guest Collection curator Marc Steene, director and founder of award-winning charity Outside In, has selected works from both collections by drawing connections between the artistic process, its source of inspiration and the expression of the artists’ inner and outer worlds. Marc said: “I want visitors to go away thinking art can come from different places, beFadra made a variety of Grass purposes and Velic, for Machine for Cutting © The Artist tt, It’s a dog’s many life II, Outside In Collection by a wider body of artists than we normally consider.” Many of the works from The Ingram Collection come from its “Inside Out” strand of non-traditional artworks. A number of these were made by prisoners and ex-prisoners, and often examine the experience of being incarcerated. Similarly, many Outside In artists explore in their work kindred experiences, either of being committed in institutions or a strong relationship

to places and spaces. Featuring everything from rare pieces by Scottie Wilson and Madge Gill to the first display of Wilhelm Werner’s drawings in the country, The Outside and The Inside seeks to connect with the audience at a creative and emotional level. The interpretations available in the gallery will follow the model of Outside In’s previous exhibitions, where information about the artists’ sources of inspiration, as well as details about their practices are included to provide context to help inform the viewers’ understanding of the works. The Lightbox exhibition will be accompanied by the panel discussion, ‘Collecting Outsider Art: A Discussion’, led by Marc Steene on 14 November 2019. The panel will comprise an array of experts who will explore the issues and challenges of collecting outsider art, both practically and ethically, including its international context. WORK HARDER. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

My new employee has a student loan, what do I have to do? I have just taken on a new employee and they have just finished university. They have told me they have a student loan. How does this work and what do I have to do?

Q. A.

The good news is you don’t have to do anything complicated as the Student Loan company and HMRC will sort out the hard stuff out for you. They will issue a ‘Student Start’ notification to you once you have set the new employee up on your payroll. The rate of student loan repayments is normally 9% above the relevant threshold. The threshold at which your employee will start to repay will depend on which repayment plan they are on. The plans are based on the type of course they attended, where they live and when they first applied for the loan. Broadly the plans can be summarised as follows: · Plan 1 if they: - Are an English or Welsh student who started an undergraduate course anywhere in the UK before 1 September 2012 - Are a Scottish or Northern Irish student who started an undergraduate or postgraduate course anywhere in the UK on or after 1 September 1998 They will only repay when your income is over £364 a week or £1,577 a month (before tax and other

deductions) · Plan 2 if they: - Are an English or Welsh student who started an undergraduate course anywhere in the UK on or after 1 September 2012 They will only repay when your income is over £494 a week or £2,143 a month (before tax and other deductions). · Postgraduate Loan repayment plan if they are an English or Welsh student who: - took out a Postgraduate Master’s Loan on or after 1 August 2016 - took out a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan on or after 1 August 2018 They will only repay when your income is over £404 a week or £1,750 a month (before tax and other deductions). Your employee should tell you which plan they are on. If they aren’t sure, they will have to phone the student loan company. On your payroll software, you must select the relevant plan and it should calculate the right amount of repayment each pay period for you. The student loan repayments you deduct from your employee will be paid over to HMRC alongside the tax and national insurance liability you deduct from your other employees. HMRC will then automatically pay it over to the student loan company to offset your employee’s loan balance. At TaxAssist Accountants, we can help you with student loan repayments. Alternatively, we can look after your payroll completely, leaving you to concentrate on the business Please get in touch today,

“I WAS AFRAID BEFORE. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. BUT EVERYTHING IS BETTER NOW.” Bana is 12. She likes to draw colourful pictures with her best friend, Jessica, at their school in East Molesey. Eight years ago, both girls had days that they would never forget. Jessica had her first day at school in East Molesey, UK. Bana had her last day at home in Aleppo, Syria. Jessica was nervous. Her parents were nervous for her. Would she make friends? She barely recognised herself in her new uniform. For Bana, there was no time to think. Her parents had no choice but to leave. The war in Syria had made it impossible to stay. From Syria to the UK In eight years of conflict, Syria has been in and out of the news. Interest, like sympathy, has risen and fallen. In that time, Bana’s family fled their home, travelled across the Syrian border, struggled to build a life in a refugee camp, were resettled to the UK, and had a chance to rebuild their lives. That Bana and her family were able to start a new life in England is thanks to a scheme announced by the UK Government in 2015 to resettle 20,000 refugees by 2020 and to the local councils that committed to taking families under this scheme. Resettlement offered safety, but not always stability, economic security, or emotional wellbeing. Elmbridge CAN

20 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

Elmbridge CAN was formed in 2016 out of a belief that the community could and should help. Our priority was to welcome families – collecting donations, furnishing homes and helping new Syrian families to settle in the UK. Muhammad came to the UK in 2014. “I was very happy when I was told I would be going to Britain,” he explains. “But I was also afraid. I thought - how I am going to do this?” “When I arrived, I came to a house with furniture, food, toys and clothes,” Muhammad told us. “I found a welcome card for me and my family. I felt like here, we could start again.” Since then, our work has expanded to providing weekly English lessons, employment support, and small grants to help families become independent. We have advocated for a more humane refugee policy, and welcomed five more families through the Government scheme and supported countless others in our community. We have mobilised a team of committed volunteers, and held monthly events with our new Syrian neighbours. Like Bana and Jessica, we have come a long way in the last few years – but we still have a lot of work to do. To find out how you can help, please go to our website, www.elmbridgecan.org.uk

Gardening with Auntie Planty AUTUMN LESSONS

Let’s face it, we Brits are pre-programmed to talk about the weather, and now that autumn has arrived, let’s have a big fat moan about how our gardens have suffered the dry, dry summer conditions. The issue of summer garden watering started no bigger than a mini speck on the distant horizon. However, as the droughty weeks passed, we all now know what happened next. For weeks and weeks, our garden plants ached for water and our lovely green lawns turned into something that closely resembled coir door mats. We reeled dangerously close to a hose pip ban. These were indeed strange times, and everyone old enough harped back to the last time it happened in 1976. Well, for the sake of our plants, we should take heed while the memory is fresh, and put habits in place should we get hot and dry again next year. Water when it’s not windy. A quick water every day for 15 minutes at a time may be convenient for you, but be disastrous for the plants. Frequent shallow watering causes a plant’s roots to stay near the surface, where they will quickly dry out. It’s better to give the garden a good soaking, less often. Gardens are best watered early in the morning to reduce evaporation. Evening watering leaves water on the plants overnight, which can then encourage fungal diseases. Did you know that you cut the amount of water used in the garden by up to 33% if you water plants manually instead of using a sprinkler. Water that’s been used once in the house, and then

22 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

collected, is called grey water. One of the most important things to remember here is to use this water within 24 hours of collecting it; after that, bacteria multiply rapidly, turning your grey water black! The dilute soap residue won’t cause too much of a problem with ornamental plants - remember that your great grandma probably chucked her washing up water over the roses to kill off the blackfly. However, if you have a water softener in your water system, don’t use it as the salts used can harm the plants and soil. Avoid using grey water on edible plants as it may add more harmful bacteria to the soil than regular water. Have a bucket in the bath to catch the early shower cold water run off until the hot water kicks in; you’ll be surprised at how much you can save from disappearing down the plughole. But, a prime job for autumn has to be to give your garden borders a generous mulch with organic matter; this will go a very long way to help your garden hold on to moisture, should we get a repeated drought next summer. Make sure your soil is well hydrated first though! Auntie Planty is a chartered horticulturist. As Auntie Planty she offers gardening problem solving sessions in your own garden. www.auntieplanty.co.uk © 2019 Valerie McBride-Munro

sticky sausage & mustard rolls ingredients method 1 tbsp olive oil 2 red onions, cut into wedges 3 thyme sprigs 6 Heck British 97% Pork Sausages 150ml dry cider 1 tsp clear honey 1 heaped tbsp English mustard 4 ciabatta rolls 1 heaped tbsp dijonnaise 1 tsp lemon juice ½ small red cabbage (about 300g), finely shredded (Serves 4)

1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or casserole over a medium heat and add the onions, thyme and sausages. Fry for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Pour in the cider and add the honey and mustard. Simmer, stirring regularly, for 10-15 minutes until the sauce is sticky and reduced, and the sausages are cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, put the ciabatta rolls in the oven to warm for 10 minutes while you make the slaw. Mix the dijonnaise, lemon juice and 1 tsp water in the base of a mixing bowl, then add the red cabbage and toss through to dress. 3. Halve the sausages lengthways (otherwise they’ll fall out of the rolls). Split open the rolls and fill each with 3 sausage halves and a heap of slaw, with extra on the side.

Inspiration!

Will you EVER learn!?! Long ago, in the days when satnav and googlemaps were twinkles in their respective inventors’ eyes, I was preparing to co-lead my first parenting course. As I had never driven to the venue before, I studied the atlas (remember them??) before setting off. There was a large, confusing, poorly-signposted junction on the way that didn’t match my directions and I arrived stressed!

entrance to the short cut. The following week, I was prepared. I looked out for the landmarks that would tell me I was approaching the turnoff - and swung triumphantly into the short cut. Success (and less stress) at last!

As I scanned the map before leaving the second week, I noticed a short cut that would avoid the major junction. Great! But I was in the wrong lane in heavy traffic as I drove up to it, and I missed my short cut. I told myself off.

We often get mad at ourselves – or worse still, at our children – for not getting things right the first time. “How many times do I have to tell you …?” But change does take time. We have to catch ourselves about to do the wrong thing and correct ourselves. And when we’re hard on ourselves or others, the brain shuts down and can’t function.

And then I remembered the Learning Steps and the advice I’d dished out to parents at the first session! “Be patient and kind to yourselves as you move through the course. It takes time to change behaviour. And just as it takes you time to change yours, remember it will take your children time to change theirs!”

How do you talk to yourself or others when things go wrong? Are you critical or supportive? Is it safe to fail and learn from failure, or do you end up shaming and blaming?

Think of learning to drive. We start off in Unconscious Incompetence – we don’t know what we don’t know. Even as lifelong passengers, we don’t think about the process of changing gear or looking into a rear view mirror. Then we move up a step to Conscious Incompetence, aware of all the things we don’t yet know how to do. With practice, we climb up to Conscious Competence, driving correctly most of the time with effort and concentration! Eventually, we reach Unconscious Competence: we know how to drive without even being aware we’re doing it! The next week, I drove along, deep in thought about the material we would be covering - and I just missed the short cut. Not again! But instead of chastising myself, I studied my failed attempt in order to learn from it, noting landmarks to look out for at the

Porsche Cayman T CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

In bygone days, when rashness, flash and show-off were my middle names I owned...successively...a Sunbeam Talbot 90, three E-type Jaguars, a Mercedes sports and a scarlet Lamborghini Espada. Then I grew up and awoke to a sense of responsibility which took the fine form of a Porsche Cayman, in my humble opinion the greatest value for money sports car that has ever been the temptation for the more monied among us, or the not so well-heeled, to want to be seen driving. It is driven by Trophy Wife much more often than me and she loves it. No wonder. It does exactly what she tells it to do. A bit like me! Whatever mood any driver finds themselves in, reflected in the right foot, the Cayman’s response is instant whether to be docile or daring, snail pace or involved in motorway top speeds. And it is equally at ease whether dashing at an M-way rate of knots or lingering idly along twisty and narrow country lanes, evidenced lately by a journey of the Macauley-twosome to deepest Cornwall, that give the car such an agreeable response, we would not swop it...except for another one!! The latest has just come on the market, the Cayman T, an extension of the fine and desirable reputation this brand of Porsche has developed. Among the mass of so-called super and sports cars, this newest and freshest challenger has just about everything even the fussiest of owners could want...speed and comfort, all in absolute safety. It zooms from zero-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and,

26 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

if our authorities allowed it, would roar onto the 170mph mark. Phew! You can feel chuffed just sitting on that potential. You know the stunning acceleration is there at the merest pressure on the pedal if needs be. The up-to-date sports car market is bursting with ranks of rivals and hot shots like the Alpine A110 Pure or the Toyota GR Supra Pro which loom large but Porsche have honed their challenger...nay...leader...to the finest of levels and performance with economy to satisfy the most tight-fisted, like me, in our midst. The so-called add-ons that can boost the price to £67,000 are to my mind not such a good idea or value when they are not really necessary. So, what makes the now-lighter Cayman with its sportier chassis such a genuine treat? It is mid-engined and superbly balanced. In my opinion just about the finest handling car on the highways and byways scene. It goes around corners with a focus on the challenge that is laser-like. The weighty steering, its mightly powerful and effective brakes, all combine to fill whomsoever is behind the wheel with utter and complete confidence in this compact offering of motoring perfection. As an all rounder, lolly-wise and good looking without being OTT, the five-star Cayman is a real beaut - and the latest edition merely serves to underpin its already matured assets. Specification: Porsche Cayman T. Top speed 170mph. Mpg 32.8. 0-62 in 4.7 secs. Price£54,358.
