Welcome to September
Welcome to our September issue of Look Local! I do hope you have all enjoyed a good summer and that you’re feeling refreshed and ready to step into the new autumn season… Here’s hoping for an ‘Indian Summer’ as the schools head back to start the new term and the more senior students head off to Uni or work experience, Gap Years or even new jobs! It’s always a time of year for new beginnings and I wish you all the very best with these new adventures, whatever they may be! There are lots of events to look forward to this month, including a fabulous food festival taking place at near-by Painshill Park, which should make for a really nice day out. We are also delighted to include two very different book competitions this month. Good Luck to all who enter. We thought we’d share a selection of images taken at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in early July. You may remember that we ran a competition to win tickets a few months back. These lovely images were kindly sent in by one of our lucky winners (who wishes to remain nameless) but he was happy for us to include them. I think he captured the day beautifully… We are always happy to welcome new advertisers to our pages, and would love to hear from you if you would like to promote your business locally. We have been circulating Look Local in Weybridge for many years and as a result we are well known and well read each month. Why not give us a call or drop us an email to see how we can help your business? Wishing you all a great month, until next time,
Ros

35TH ANNIVERSARY
This coming November will mark thirty-five years since Ashford Kitchens & Interiors was first established. Along the way, we’ve developed our knowledge of kitchens, bedrooms and home-offices and we’ve carried out thousands of bespoke installations around the local area. We’ve expanded our team while remaining, at the core, a family-run business. Every passing year, we have grown and we’ve loved every moment of it. Our Objectives and Approach Our primary driving force is a love for all things home design. There is a great enjoyment to be had in adapting and designing a client’s surroundings and we love putting smiles on people’s faces by transforming their living spaces. Every project is unique. Whether it’s a bespoke luxury kitchen installation, a bedroom refurbishment or a home office extension, each project offers its challenges and has its own charm. For us - regardless of the size or shape of your design - our objective is to fulfil and surpass your expectations and it gives us great pleasure to see our customers’ happiness. A Short History of Ashford Kitchens & Interiors Ashford Kitchens & Interiors began thirty-five years ago in 1984. Founders Richard and Tracey Flower decided to open their first showroom in Ashford, Middlesex and have been part of the Kitchen Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) ever since. When the doors first opened the company was known as Ashford

Fitted Furniture. For the next thirty-five years, Richard and Tracey designed, supplied and installed quality fitted kitchens, bespoke bedrooms and innovative home-offices. In 2010, twenty-six years after Richard and Tracey founding the company, their son Stephen joined the team. His wife Grace joined him soon after, followed by their brother-in-law Guy. Four years down the line, following the success of their initial Ashford showroom, the team launched their second showroom, this time in Buckinghamshire’s Farnham Common. The company continues to expand from its humble origins as a family owned and family run business. The Flowers still operate the two showrooms and Ashford remains a local, friendly, family-run business. Last year the Ashford Middlesex kitchen showroom was relaunched after undergoing a three-month refurbishment that saw ten new kitchen displays, nine modern bedroom and home-office displays as well as an entirely new shopfront. Stephen summarised Ashford’s desire to keep developing and renewing Ashford’s two showrooms: ‘Over the years we have firmly believed in the importance of showcasing the very latest design ideas in kitchens & bedrooms. Customers want to see and touch the product in a stylish setting which is why our showrooms are regularly updated.’ The Ashford Kitchens & Interiors Team We have a fantastic, dedicated team who have carried out several thousand installations over the years. The design team, project management team and installation team all boast a wealth of experience and expertise gained over years of working in the industry. Want to know more? Feel free to pop into one of Ashford Kitchens & Interiors two showrooms in Ashford, Middlesex and Farnham Common, Buckinghamshire. Both showrooms are open Monday to Saturday 9.00am - 5.30pm. Can’t make it in? No problem - get in touch with our Ashford Showroom on 01784 245964.

Q.
I haven’t given any expenses or benefits to staff this year, do I have to let HMRC know this or will they just assume this is the case if I do nothing.
You only need to report to HMRC if you have been issued with a paper P11D(b), an electronic notice to file a P11D(b) or a reminder to file a P11D(b) letter. This would happen if you have filed P11Ds previously. If you have been asked to submit a P11D(b) to HMRC but have nothing to report then you will need to tell them this is the case, because if not they will issue penalties as they will assume you are just late. However, you can click here to inform HMRC that you have nothing to report. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/payeno-return-of-class-1a-national-insurance-contributions P11Ds only have to be submitted to HMRC for each employee that you have provided benefits or expenses to. The filing deadline for forms P11D and P11D(b) is 6 July following the tax year and penalties will be issued if the forms are filed late. If you would like more information in relation to P11Ds and P11D(b)s please feel free to call us on 01932 850600 or email us a weybridge@taxassist. co.uk.
A. Q.
I want to keep track of what my customers owe me, and I don’t know what I should be doing to enable me to reliably keep track of it all.
The best solution would be to use a digital bookkeeping software. This will keep track of everything you are owed but also have the detail as to what each individual customer owes you and also which specific invoices they haven’t paid. Now you may be thinking, this sounds complicated or like too much work, but you will be pleased to hear that the software takes the hard work out of it for you. Most software will enable you to record the money you have received, and it will automatically try to match it against the relevant invoice for you. Once this is done, it really is just a click of a button and you can see how much all customers owe you as well as what each individual customer owes, saving you time and aiding your cashflow position. We can help you with all of this from which software to

Gardening with Auntie Planty SEED DISPERSAL
Autumn is the time when many plants prepare themselves for the long cold winter. Apart from the safe shedding of leaves, there is one very important job to be done to secure its future - seed dispersal. Here Nature has devised some pretty cunning tricks to use wind, water, birds, mammals, insects and others to complete the task. Colour plays a vital role to decide who is going to do what. In very general terms, birds see bright colours, mammals (other than humans) are colour blind but have an enhanced sense of smell, even slugs and ants have a role to play in getting seeds as far away from the parent plant as possible. Mango I first met the mango in the Far East, and have long been puzzled as to why such a delicious fruit should be so difficult to eat. Chefs have found a cute way to separate the stone from the flesh, but they have had to leave a lot of valuable fruit sticking resolutely to the stone (the seed). Nature’s answer is easy; the pulp was never meant to be divorced from the seed. The perfect seed carrier here is the elephant; s/he doesn’t waste time trying to pare away the flesh, getting covered in juice. Its gullet is wide enough to swallow the mango whole. The stone then travels through complete digestion, to be deposited many miles away, beautifully prepared for germination. Avocado Unlike the mango, the avocado seed is smooth so for
18 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019
humans it’s really easy to separate the flesh from the stone. However, it contains a chemical protection to prevent it being chewed to bits. We shouldn’t ever put this to the test, but if an animal starts to chew on an avocado and crunches into the stone, this will release such a bitter taste the whole fruit is either swallowed whole, and like the mango the stone will have a happy ‘preparation’ journey through the gut, or just gets spat out, to start a new life where it lands. Quince, apples and pears It’s no coincidence that autumn-ripening fruits are targeted by hibernating bears. Such a bear will not be bothered to climb a tree for just one fruit so for the prehibernation autumn feast s/he waits for the wonderful fruity scented fruits to drop, and the bear gut does the rest. Monkey’s earrings Here Nature is not so kind! The seed is called a cheating fruit - it looks delicious, with an orange outer with black centre - there is no delicious pulpy outer, all of it is just hard as nails. By the time that the poor bird realises this, it drops it in disgust, far from the parent plant. In seed distribution terms - job done! Auntie Planty is a chartered horticulturist. As Auntie Planty she offers gardening problem solving sessions in your own garden. www.auntieplanty.co.uk © 2019 Valerie McBride-Munro

Mark Bisson’s George: The Cat Who Lost His Confidence
Following a conversation with his daughter Gemma, who was struggling to find a book to support conversations with her young son regarding a perceived loss of confidence, which his teacher had brought to her attention, executive coach and mentor, Mark Bisson, known to his grandchildren as Grandad Fox, set about finding a solution. Gemma was searching for a book which would act as a conversation starter but not a parenting book. This got Mark thinking about his role as an executive coach and the topics clients brought to coaching sessions, which were similar to the ones Gemma and her parent friends were discussing. Mark, who lives in Esher, is also an author. So he looked at how fables can be used to create new awareness and insight in a fun and creative way. And so “George -The Cat Who Lost His Confidence” was born. The book is based on George, a cat that Mark and his family had when they lived in Bookham. As is retold in the fable, George who was a very large cat, used to sit with the foxes in the bushes at the end of the garden and it seemed like he had become an honorary fox. George the cat and Grandad Fox offer a delightful, child-friendly introduction to the world of selfconfidence - and more importantly how to combat the
impact of negative comparisons by coaching your child to focus on their skills, talents and attributes. This enables them to gain new awareness and find their own solutions to the challenges they face. George is sad because he has lost his confidence and decides that he wants to be a fox instead. Grandad Fox helps George become aware of what he likes about himself. When Freddie the fox cub is drowning in the swimming pool, George needs to act quickly and show great courage in order to rescue him. Will George decide that he likes being himself after all? Mark uses his professional coaching expertise to help parents and carers support their children to think more clearly and guide them to organise their thoughts and feelings about the tricky topic of inner confidence.

LOCAL AUTHOR DELVES INTO SURREY’S MILITARY HISTORY
Since moving to Surrey in 2006, Paul Le Messurier has developed a keen interest in the local and military history of the surrounding area and the county of Surrey. After a career in business, he has now turned his attention to research and writing and has produced several articles on local history including a series on the Home Front during World War 2. Located immediately to the south of London, between the capital and the English Channel, Surrey has long played a significant part in the defence of the nation. During the Civil War, Surrey was firmly on the side of the Parliamentarians. From their base in Farnham Castle, they controlled the vital Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, near Guildford. The threat to the country during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars led to the construction of a line of semaphore signalling stations through Surrey to provide a fast communication link between London and Portsmouth. The line was replaced in 1822 by semaphore towers, some still existing today. In the late 19th century a 72-mile ring of fortified positions was established from Guildford through Surrey towards Kent and Essex, known as the London Defence Positions. In World War 1 The Queen's Royal West Surrey and the East Surrey Regiment lost over 13,000 men between them. On the first day of the battle of the

Somme troops from the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment were waiting for the signal to go over the top. To encourage his men, Captain W.P. ‘Billie’ Nevill provided them with footballs which they kicked as they made their way across no-man’s land. Captain Nevill was killed but his men went on to capture the enemy trenches. During World War 2 Surrey was home to several RAF fighter squadrons. Due to its proximity to London, Surrey residents were to suffer at the hands of the German Luftwaffe during the blitz. Parts of Surrey, together with Kent and Sussex, became known as ‘Bomb Alley’, with Croydon suffering more damage than any other district during Hitler’s flying bomb campaign. “Surrey’s Military History” is a fascinating window into Surrey’s military history. It gives a terrific insight into the events, people and places that are Surrey’s Military Heritage. A thoroughly good read. £14.99, www.amberley-books.com

POEM CORNER Friends In recent times, we’ve lost some pals It can be quite depressing Our range of friendships old and new Requires some re-assessing Friends from our youth are rather few But those ones are the best They know so much about you No need to pass a test We value them for who they are And take them as they come We’ve known them all for ever And every one’s a chum But new friends too are lovely A bell rings straight away It’s always nice to listen To what they have to say So on the whole we’re happy The mix is on the mend There’ll never be a time to spare A person who’s your friend

F IAT 50 0 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
Let me start with a question. How many Fiat 500s do you see, even on the shortest of journeys? More than one I would wager. Little wonder, because this wee treat has become a mega seller, a prized possession in the hotly contested city car market. Just like yonks ago, when the Volkswagen Beetle & the Mini jostled in truly vast numbers on roads of all types, bustling city highways & byways & remote village lanes giving both pleasure and economic relief. The same goes now for the Fiat 500. I am not the least bit surprised because, truth to tell, it is honest value for money, as appealing as can be, and bursting with the feel good factor; a loveable little looker. That is why I bought one & I am still running my shiny little black beauty after two years. Penny pincher that I am & a leggy six footer, the car more than adequately satisfies both my spendthrift attitude & my comfort levels for my daily demands.
And when weekends tempt Trophy Wife Delia & me to a seaside escape we have as much space in the boot as we need for our comfies & the tightest of promenade parking has never, ever been a problem. The vast worldly sales have left broad grins on the faces of the money men at Fiat’s Italian HQ - and they are figures that also give joy to the planners & design engineers whose genius richly deserves world admiration - and envy, among rival city car builders. The offbeat, funky & utterly desirable retro-looking petite 500 is now an established icon - I cannot envisage the slightest change in that situation for a really wholesome while to come. It revels in a choice of good, effective & efficient engines, the all round visibility is perfect & without hindrance, and the cabin comfort zone is as good as it can be, not so much for four, as for two people.Though the family weenies will be comfy enough in the back seats. Okay, okay, it is not a racer & won’t be a challenger to the Ferraris at the traffic lights change - but is quick enough to get you into the melee without getting in anybody’s way. Again, for tight wads, it’s residuals are high and if & when you decide to sell - maybe to buy another one you won’t lose too much lolly from your original forkout. And what’s more tempting than that? Specifications: Engines, three petrol, one diesel.Seven trim levels. Warranty three years/ 60,000 miles Prices £12,00-£23,380. Cheapest 1.2 69bhp Pop.My choice:Twin Air Lounge. 105bhp. Mpg 50.4. Speed 0-62mph 11s. Around 100mph.

THE HERBERT PROTOCOL Safe & Found
Imagine the situation. Your loved one, who has dementia, is missing. The police are in your home asking for personal details which, because you are sick with worry, you are finding hard to provide. Of course, they need to know your loved one’s name, height, any distinguishing marks, what they were wearing, mobile phone number, medication and the type of dementia they have. Also, if they have any money or a travelpass and, if they drive, the type of vehicle, registration number and colour. If they usually go for a daily walk the police need to know where they would normally go and, if they have gone missing before, where they were found. All this when the only thing you want is for your loved one to be found safe and well. Well help is at hand in the form of The Herbert Protocol. This initiative is named after George Herbert, who served in the Second World War and who was a veteran of the Normandy Landings. He lived with dementia
and would repeatedly be reported missing from his care home whilst trying to return to his previous home. Surrey Police and its partners are part of the national Herbert Protocol initiative which is a risk reduction tool for people living with dementia who may be reported missing from home. The form has been designed to provide the police with as much information as possible, including a photograph, so they can start a search immediately. Most importantly it avoids putting families through the stress of having to answer questions from the police at an incredibly distressing and worrying time. The form can be downloaded from the Surrey Police website at www.surrey.police.uk/contact-us/herbertprotocol-missing-person-form/ and should be updated regularly and kept in a safe place. The police will only ask for the form if a person is reported missing but you will have peace of mind that, should the unthinkable happen, you are prepared. Annabelle Yeomans.

Inspiration!
Biting the Bullet Have you ever had to do something that terrified you? Years ago, I was out on a day of gorge scrambling and rock climbing. It was the first time I’d done anything like that. My walking boots had already had a dunking in a fast-flowing stream and we were climbing up a near-vertical rock face with chin-high toeholds much smaller than my boots could fit into. I was petrified, but there was nothing remotely stone-like about my legs, which were as wobbly as jelly and not serving me very well. I couldn’t bear to look down and see the drop beneath me, and I didn’t want to look up and see how much further I had to go. I longed to give up, but I couldn’t let down the teenage boys I was with who were scrambling over the rocks like mountain goats. Our guide encouraged, cajoled and finally pushed me up with a “Come on, you can do it”. At the end of the day, I asked him what would have happened if any of us had injured ourselves. “Oh, there’s a track that runs up the mountain just over there,” he replied casually. “What??” Had I known that at the beginning of the day, I might have been cheering the others on from the safety of the sidelines - and missing out on the challenge, the adventure - and yes, the fun. I once coached someone who hadn’t sung for over thirty years. She’d been a child performer and had won awards for acting and singing until the age of 10, when one of the judges at an audition stopped her with “I thought you said you could sing! Try again!” Her voice stuck in her throat at her second attempt, and she hadn’t sung in public since then. She longed to go back to musical theatre, but she felt physically sick at the thought of auditions.
I knew that talking about things wasn’t going to make any difference. She was experiencing fear, so she needed a safe space in which to experience courage. I invited her to stand up. “Oh no”, she exclaimed, “you’re going to make me sing”. I said I couldn’t make her do anything against her will, but I was inviting her to call upon her courage. I sang a few notes into the phone, and then she said, “Oh, all right then”. A moment later, a beautiful, rich, sonorous voice filled my ears. At the end of our call, she said she’d look into finding a singing teacher and a singing group. She emailed me before the end of the day to tell me she’d done so. Courage exists in the moment, not in the future. What have you been putting off? Do it today! Live courageously,
