Auntie Planty tells us about the benefits of talking to our plants
From the Editor Welcome to our Summer Issue!
Once again, as I write this message, the rain is falling outside! What a great British summer! I’m not sure about the predictions for the weeks ahead, but let’s just hope that there are enough sunny days to warm our bones! We decided not to let the weather get us down here in the Look Local office. We are in summer mode, despite the weather, and have just enjoyed a ‘deadline ice cream treat’ with the heater on !
We have plenty for you to enjoy in this issue. Weybridge Open Gardens weekend in aid of the Sam Beare Hospice was a wonderfully sunny event. I went along on the Sunday afternoon and enjoyed seeing some delightful riverside gardens. Thanks must go to the owners of these fine examples of all things horticultural and also to the good folk of Weybridge who attended and supported this very good cause. I hope you enjoy my photographic coverage!
Have you been to The Medicine Garden? It’s on the road between Effingham and Cobham, with plenty of free parking and a selection of lovely refreshment areas. It makes for a really splendid afternoon out. I went along recently to an open evening at The Art Shed, one of the small businesses within the grounds, and I was very impressed by the selection of art on offer. Not just the obvious either: this collection of artists provides an eclectic selection, demonstrating a wide array of skills. My photos don’t really do it justice, but hopefully might just inspire a few of you to visit. I’m sure you will enjoy it and it’s not far
to travel for a lovely afternoon out. See inside for more details. This month, we have included a bumper double page of ‘What’s on’. I hope you will find this useful and will be able to enjoy some of the events which we have included. That’s about it for this month. We will be back in September, following a short summer break. Until then, stay safe and I wish you a wonderful summer! Kindest regards,

he sun came out and shone down on the Open Gardens in Weybridge last month. In aid of the wonderful Sam Beare Hospice, a selection of green-fingered locals opened their stunning gardens to the public. I decided to join in and to see if I could glean any inspiration for my own garden! My first stop, however, was to the Hospice itself, which is based in the centre of Weybridge. I wanted to meet and chat to some of the hard working volunteers and trustees who were serving cream teas with the biggest selection of cakes when I arrived. What good timing! They were all very friendly and I immediately noticed the happy and warm atmosphere as I walked in. One gentleman I spoke to told me how well his wife had been cared for at the end of her life ten years ago, and how kind and supportive the care had been, not only for her but also for his family when she sadly passed away. He said he was so grateful for how well they were all looked after, and he still helps out and volunteers at the Hospice to this very day. I was shown around by one of the trustees and enjoyed hearing about this amazing local charity. The facilities are very good and I am sure very much appreciated by all who visit Sam Beare as patients or as relatives. It was then time to visit some gardens. There had also been a selection of gardens open on the Saturday. Sadly, I’d missed these, but I was looking forward to seeing the Sunday selection which were all river side! Here are my photos from the day, which say it all, I think‌. Thank you to all the garden owners for supporting Sam Beare Hospice and also for letting me photograph your totally stunning gardens. I’m in awe!

So what’s your ultimate super group?
Back in the days when proper musicians played proper music…I recall a dinner party game in which everyone round the table would invent their own pop/rock outfit & try to outshine the rest of the guests with their choice of band members. It comes from a time when it was big news if, say, the lead guitarist of one group left one big name group for another. This would have applied to The Who, Cream, Yardbirds, Yes, the Faces & many more. So if I was to play this game of creating brand new bands, I’d probably pick the late drummer with the Who, Keith Moon as my drummer. Wild at times but I also found him to be the perfect gentleman on other occasions. Bass guitar would have to be played by the lovable man from the Small Faces & later the Faces. A solid, dependable guy called Slim Chance who also wrote enduring songs for Rod Stewart & co. as well as his own backing band that he left The Faces for. Keyboards would need to be played by my old mate & keyboard genius Rick Wakeman who played with Cat Stevens, David Bowe & Yes before going solo. Rhythm guitar is tricky but I’d have to go for George Harrison, an under rated maverick who was as influential as they come & would qualify for lead guitar had I not picked Jimmy Page for his incredibly full & dynamic presence with Led Zeppelin; & as for vocals…... Chrissie Hynde, the Pretenders singer with her fantastic range of styles, from hard hitting rock to delicate soul, as demonstrated on Thin Line Between Love & Hate. So what do you think? Now all I need is a name for my band….?

I’m convinced that there is an unspoken language between plant and gardener, and even plant to plant. But proving this little theory of mine to you is going to be difficult.
A
PLANT L K
Have you ever wondered why some people have more success with plants than others? In this country, we label these folk that are blessed with a gardening talent as having green fingers. On the other side of the pond, Americans call them green thumbs. My reasoning doesn’t have to hang on your belief in magic, although it might help. I often tell the tale of the Irish farmer who, on finding a bird-planted hawthorn tree in the middle of a cornfield field, will leave it there. He will go to great lengths to plough around it, leaving the tree undisturbed. Why? Because all selfrespecting farmers believe that the fairies live at the base of the tree and others who have evicted the plant have suffered extreme (and I mean extreme) bad luck. Some think that green fingers are an extension of a verdant heart, and that plants respond well only to gardeners who understand plants in a very real sense. However, there have been others who believe that love was the vital source of nourishment essential to plant-raising. One American breeder of note would regularly assure his plants of his appreciation of them, and ask them for help in producing new cultivars. His relationship with plants was so legendary that during the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, although much of the city was destroyed, not a single pane of glass in
his greenhouses was broken, nor a single plant injured. More recently, someone in Dorset was living in a house with a fine and healthy willow in the front garden. They sold up and moved to another village close by. After about eight years, they met the new owners in the street who asked them about what special food they had given the willow tree, as it was now suffering badly. Knowing that some willows like to be talked to, the original owners returned to have a chat with the ailing tree. After that, the willow revived, but it obviously needed more than one conversation. It later died. Surely this was a good example of a lonely tree pining for its lost love? So, if you’re asked to water your neighbours’ plants while they are away on a long holiday, especially if there is a willow tree in the garden, take heed. Even if you do little to love the other plants, do please pay special attention to the willow. Water it well, talk to it kindly, acknowledge that it could be pining for its holidaying gardeners and reassure it that Fred and Vera (whoever) will be back soon, otherwise expect the worst! Senile decay is a wicked saboteur of the occupants of Memory Lane and it wreaked its havoc yet again on me when I strove to recall what Lexus saloon I tested a decade or so ago. I was stirred to jogging my mind for a flashback as a comparison when I set about reviewing a complete contrast to the whispering wotsit I sampled ages ago to Lexus’s RCF roaring firebrand new release. The roomily elegant saloon of yesteryear revelled in a hush of an engine so quiet that I was duped into worrying it had packed up as I waited at, say, traffic lights. The same level of dupe cannot be said of the latest Lexus, their wonderful new challenger in the wild and woolly world of high performance 2x2 sporting speedsters. But you’ll have to be fast off the mark to grab one: I’m told that only 200 initially will be on sale in the UK. What you will get for your hardearned is a whizz of a hand-built motoring treat - the most powerful V8 road car the company has ever
built, endurance-tested to the limit on the world’s most demanding race circuits by skilled drivers who know how to take a car way beyond the safety limits that we sensibly impose on ourselves. To sit in the snug, superbly appointed leather-clad cockpit in front of two rather tight socalled passenger seats is an oasis of simplicity and calm with a nonbewildering array of instruments. Those minimal back seats, hardly roomy enough for the offspring, are further rendered useless by the severely curved roofing that dips deeply over the rear end. The benefit is that the boot is of a very useable size, and that’s more than most of its main rivals, such as the F-type Jaguar, dare boast. And the whole Lexus set-up carries
enough insulation and electronic gizmos to keep the engine noise at bay and ensure the driver is aware of any looming perils. As an example, there is an alert to remind you sharply if you carelessly wander out of your lane, plus blindspot monitoring. The RCF is a welcome breakthrough for a car maker better known for its SUVs and big saloons, and to take on the established likes of Jaguar, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes is indeed a bold move. But esssentially, it ticks all the crucial boxes and, to my mind, is a surefire winner, albeit a heavyweight two-tonner compared with, say, the 150kg lighter BMW M4. When you give the engine some hearty revs and stir the rear-wheel drive into full action, the rewards, either on the tight and twisty side road wiggles or cruising M-way stretches, are a feeling of composure and safety. RCF? Racy. Comfy. And fast.. Specification: Lexus 2x2 V8.HP 467. Top speed 168mph.0-60 in 4.5 seconds. 26mpg. Price: £59,995.

can receive discounts on entry to Painshill Landscape Garden in Cobham – two adults admitted for the price of one, saving £7.70 - & Brooklands Museum, where adults receive a discount of £2 (£9 instead of £11) and children £1 (£5 instead of £6). It will also be a wonderful way for teenagers to get around during the school holidays at just £1 per journey for under16s. Chatterbus Chairman Sir Gerald Acher said he was
“thrilled” by the way in which the bus is being used. At a two month review, some 2000 journeys had been made with around 50 passengers a day, Monday to Friday. 100% rated Chatterbus as good or excellent & 100% per cent would use it again. Mary Lewis, Surrey County Councillor for Cobham, expressed her delight that the service is enabling people to get from Cobham to the Jobcentre Plus in Weybridge, one of the reasons the bus was founded: “It just shows how something as simple as transport can make such a difference to people’s lives.” These statistics come to life in a film specially made by ex-BBC presenter & Cobham resident Michael Rodd. A commuter describes how “I get the bus every morning. It links with the trains and it’s excellent. It’s what the community has always needed”, while school children on the way to St Andrew’s in Cobham & St Matthew’s in Downside are delighted, as are their
parents. One lady used to spend £25 per day on taxis. Many, especially the elderly & non-drivers, find access to Brooklands Retail Park & the drivers a godsend – “They are very kind – they help you on with the shopping.” The survey has shown how there could be some adjustments to the service, however, to better serve local needs. Chatterbus organisers are considering changes, such as the simplification of the Saturday C2 timetable & the inclusion of Cobham Sainsbury’s during the week as well as on Saturdays. Revisions will be made with Surrey County Council’s autumn/ winter general timetables. The special offer vouchers, the film, timetables and fares can be found on www. chatterbus.org.uk.

GRAND HOTEL

s the holiday season gathers momentum, I want to tip you off about a spectacular dining setting ... a tree
house. And, no, don’t panic, you don’t have to swing up to it like a loinclothed Tarzan. Trophy Wife managed it elegantly, gliding 30-feet up the spiral staircase in her Michael Kors cocktail frock and altitudinous high heels. Two glam friends, Sara and Denise, both City financial company bigwigs, also hit the heights for a gettogether with the Macauleys at the memorable Gran Hotel Son Net in Majorca. When you traipse to the top of the sturdy tree in front of the centuriesold hotel, the eagle’s eye view across
the Sierra Tramuntana Mountains is a breathtaker. Sun-drenched day gives way to balmy evening, and whether you are a romantic twosome or eight gourmandising chums, ten if you are only up there for a stand-up cocktail party, you will revel in the twinkle of lights from the villas of the well-off that illuminate the black mountain backdrop. The 31-room hotel, opened in 1998 and developed from a 17th century mansion belonging to a gallant Spanish knight, has been the luxy stopover for an endless list of international royalty, US presidents, supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Heidi Klum, fashion queen Stella McCartney, Rod Stewart and Hollywood idol Michael Douglas and his missus Catherine Zeta Jones,
to list but a few of the glittering guests. No doubt they all slept in the awesome Presidential suite, my and TW’s kip for a privileged doze. If, like me, you feared the island was a haven for the tattooed bucketand-spade hordes, all you have to do is take an inexpensive cab ride halfan-hour north of Palma airport to the village of Puigpunyent and the overlooking Son Net, a new way of spelling t-r-a-n-q-u-i-l-l-i-t-y. I have visited half a dozen times and I am sure that figure will be doubled ... just as it is repeated by the VIP drop-ins who, like me and TW, are content to stay put ... but realise that, barely 20 minutes away in any direction, there is yet another Majorca surprise waiting to be discovered.

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee is the eagerly awaited, rediscovered sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman is set during the mid-1950s and features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Scout (Jean Louise Finch) has returned to Maycomb from New York to visit her father Atticus. She is forced to grapple with issues, both personal and political, as she tries to understand both her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.

Because We Say So by Noam Chomsky. Whatever the world may think, US actions are legitimate because they say so. The West’s most prominent critic of US imperialism returns with another essential counterpunch to American hegemony. Noam Chomsky is one of the world’s bestselling and most influential political writers.
Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson is another matter, however. In 1993, before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire to move back to the States for a few years with his family, he insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. His aim was to take stock of the nation’s public face and private parts (as it were), and to

Lawrence Osborne has been touted by the Sunday Times as a modern Graham Greene. I’ve just read his new book Hunters in the Dark. I suggest you don’t bother. Poor prose, bad grammar, ridiculous metaphors. Whoever proofread it was half asleep. Thin, implausible characters in a ridiculous implausible plot. It’s an insult to Graham Greene – who wrote such beautiful moving novels in a unique and exquisite style.
Book Voucher to WIN see p28 analyse what precisely it was he loved so much about a country that had produced Marmite; a military hero whose dying wish was to be kissed by a fellow named Hardy; place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey and Shellow Bowells; people who said ‘Mustn’t grumble’, and ‘Ooh lovely’ at the sight of a cup of tea and a plate of biscuits; and Gardeners’ Question Time. Notes from a Small Island was a huge number-one bestseller when it was first published, and has become the nation’s most loved book about Britain, going on to sell over two million copies The Bolds by Julian Clarey. Mr and Mrs Bold are just like you and me: they live in a nice house (in Teddington), they have jobs (like writing Christmas cracker jokes) and they love to have a bit of a giggle. One slight difference: they’re hyenas. Yes, that’s right - they’re covered in fur, have tails tucked into their trousers, and they really, really like to laugh. So far, the Bolds have managed to keep things under wraps, even when their children Bobby and Betty were born. But the nosy man next door smells a rat (or a hyena), and a trip to the local wildlife park and the brilliantly wacky heist that results could be the end of Teddington’s bestkept secret. Whatever will the neighbours think? Ages: 7+. The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers. The hilarious sequel to the international bestseller The Day the Crayons Quit, which sees the crayons back, and
crosser than ever. Duncan receives a set of postcards from his crayons, who have been lost, forgotten, broken, and even melted in a clothes dryer and stuck to a pair of underpants! Hilarious text and brilliant illustrations. Ages: 3+. The Door That Led to Where, by Sally Gardner. The latest novel from the Carnegie Medal and Costa Award-winning author, now in paperback. AJ has failed his GCSEs. For him and his friends, the future looks grim until he finds a key which opens a door to the past. Suddenly, they find that they are no longer sad youth statistics, but young men with purpose, and at the heart of everything is a crime that only they can solve. With important underlying themes of how the education system lets many pupils down, something Gardner herself experienced as a dyslexic teenager. Ages: 12+ Hugless Douglas Goes to Little School by David Melling. The sixth adventure in the bestselling series sees Douglas go to school. There is so much to do - and lots of hugs to be given out! Now in paperback. Ages: 0+. The Rest of Us Just Live Here. A bold and irreverent new novel by Patrick Ness, which powerfully asks, what if you weren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts? What if you were like Mikey, who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school? Ness’s A Monster Calls is soon to be a major film, for release in 2016.

e often fill our heads with thoughts more harmful than any junk food could be in our bellies. “It’s hopeless”, “I hate him / her / my job”, “I’ll get him / her back for doing that”. Rather than deal with each negative thought as it arises, try to create a healthy climate in your heart and mind, like taking probiotics for your gut helps your overall health. Here are some ideas to get you started. They’re free, don’t need anyone else and can be done anywhere, any time. Smile before you open your eyes in the morning. Smiles – whether forced or involuntary – have been shown to reduce stress, lower your heart rate, strengthen your immune system, and release endorphins (the same chemicals you get with a runner’s high but without the effort!) that make you feel happier and reduce pain. A genuine smile will do more good than a fake one, so think of happy memories or people you love if you aren’t in the mood. If nothing else, you’ll have laughter lines instead of frowns when you’re old.
1.
2.
How you want to feel in the day ahead? Set your intention and keep coming back to it. There will always be something to throw you off course – some bad news, an argument at home or work – and you can either let it ruin your day or steer your way back to your intention. Was it for peace? Lightness? Connection? Decide how you want to FEEL during the day and keep coming back to it, consciously and intentionally.
3.
Forgive - someone, anyone, for something, anything. We have all these hooks from people in
the past that keep anger or resentment alive within us. And the worst of it is, the other person isn’t feeling the pain - we are. Forgive and let go. You¹ll feel better for it.
4.
Do a random act of unnecessary kindness. Just because. Kindness is contagious, so start a kindness epidemic and some will inevitably come back to you. And if you’re feeling drained from always doing kind things for others, chances are you need to be kind to yourself for a change.
5.
Last thing at night, think back over your day and pick five things you’re grateful for. Really FEEL the gratitude. Having trouble? Think about the things you’d miss if you lost them and really appreciate their presence in your life.
Have a great day,
Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC
