WELCOME OUR SEPTEMBER MAGAZINE Who said British Summers are awful? It’s certainly been a scorcher this year hasn’t it? As World Cup fever and the Wimbledon tennis season both seem like distant memories, I wonder if this year will be etched in our memories like the last big heat wave summer of 1976? I was 12 then and I remember being on holiday in Cornwall with my family, it was totally lovely, and will always be a cherished memory. This year I’ve struggled to keep my hanging baskets alive and like all the gardens around here, my grass has looked so brown for most of the summer but by the time you read this, I hope it will have perked up a little ! We have news this month from Claygate Youth Club; the steering group are delighted to report the continued success of this popular group, including news on a recent, very well deserved award the youth team have recieved! See page 12. Also this month we have details of the packed itinerary from Oxshott & Cobham Music Society, well worth saving dates in your diary/ booking your seats… Calling all young artists. See page 24 for details on a national competition which could see your art work on display in the Natural History Museum! Fresh starts for many young people, we send Good Luck to all the children starting school this month, and also to the young adults flying the nest and heading to Universities far and wide. May all your new adventures be good ones … That’s about it from me, until next time, do take care.

Claygate Village Youth Association, or Claygate Youth Club, worked for many years in collaboration with Surrey County Council (SCC) until the funding was cut in 2015 and paid youth workers were made redundant. A meeting was called by a group of concerned local people & a steering group was formed. It was decided that volunteers would provide a youth club & in April 2016 it reopened one evening a week with 11 members and grew to an average of 35 by the following year. Fast forward 2 years, & the youth club is a wellestablished volunteer run youth club led by founder member, Jamie Blake, a long term resident of Claygate. There are now 17 volunteers working together to provide a safe & enjoyable space for young people of Claygate and beyond. The youth club is open every Thursday evening from 7pm until 9pm & we start each evening with pizza from the local restaurant. The rest of the evening offers a wide range of activities such as football, basketball, arts and craft, pool, air hockey, drama workshops & much more! Others services include a tuck shop, socials, computers & printers for homework & the occasional D.J night!
12 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
Volunteers are always on hand for support & advice if needed & they can also offer many skills to share with the young people who feel they can come along & chill out, chat with their friends & have fun in a safe environment. Recently, the volunteers were awarded “Surrey Youth Team of the Year” by Surrey Clubs for young people. This is a marvellous achievement and one that we could never have imagined receiving so soon after saving the youth club 2 years ago. Our long term goal has always been to offer an extra night. As our leaders are volunteers with full time jobs, its currently not possible to offer further nights. To make it so, we need more regular volunteers. Therefore, we are always on the lookout for new volunteers. You need no previous experience, qualification or skills. We welcome anyone to come along and experience the youth club, and to see if it is right for them. (DBS check is required). We are also excited to be almost ready to have a new kitchen installed. Thanks to the local Co-op backing our project, we have been able to raise over £1500 towards the new kitchen. This will enable us to provide basic cooking, baking and hygiene skills to our young people.
At Sir William Perkins’s School our aim is to build confidence, integrity and excellence in a caring, innovative and happy community so that each student leaves with the best possible chance of achieving their full potential and ready to take on the world. As shown by our regular excellent exam results, academic success is a priority of ours, but we feel strongly that education is about more than just achieving top grades. We believe in educating the whole person and equipping our students to make their mark on the world. We encourage them to get involved in the many

co-curricular activities we have on offer and to take every opportunity they can to develop their interests and creativity, their interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills, while also reaching into the wider community. The only way to really get the full picture is to come and visit the School. We invite you to attend one of our Information Mornings where we look forward to welcoming you, giving you a tour of the School, as well as answering any questions you may have about us here at Sir William Perkins’s School. Wild Alaskan Salmon WITH CAULIFLOWER & CELERIAC MASH Ingredients Method ½ tbsp unsalted butter 1 echalion shallot, finely diced ½ small cauliflower (about 300g), in small florets 200g celeriac, peeled and diced 100ml semi-skimmed milk ½ lemon, zest and juice ½ tbsp olive oil 2 Waitrose 1 Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Fillets

Add the milk & simmer gently, uncovered, for 10mins until the veg are tender (don’t worry if the milk looks split). DRAMA Claremont Fan Court School
Show week for Year 6 is a wonderful celebration of the children’s time in the Prep School. Working on the production brings the School community together in a special way, with its success due to the huge effort made by the staff, parents and, of-course, the children. For
most children, it is the only time that they will appear in a production of this calibre and it is a week when lifetime memories are made. Our audience are in for a treat!’ Mrs Helen Hutton-Attenborough, Head of Claremont Fan Court Preparatory School.

YOUNG SURREY ARTISTS!
GLOBAL CANVAS CHILDREN’S ART COMPETITION 2019
If you’re young, arty and concerned about conservation, why not enter this year’s ‘Global Canvas’ contest? Your colourful creation could end up on display at London’s famous Natural History Museum! The annual Global Canvas Children’s Art Competition was set up in 2004 by the Shalford-based David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, to encourage young people to express their concern for wildlife and the environment through art. This year’s theme is ‘Habitats of the World’ and group entries are invited from Surrey children aged 16 years and under. Entrants can use creative media including art, sculpture, textiles, collage etc. to present a mini-exhibition reflecting the competition topic. “This year’s theme is a celebration of all the wonderful and weird places where animals make their homes whether that’s an ocean, a desert, or even a rotting log!” said DSWF’s Education Manager Jo Elphick. “Global Canvas gives young artists the chance to investigate the threats faced by wild animals and to their habitats and think about what they can do to help. We encourage an emphasis on wildlife, but all of earth’s
24 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018

OXSHOTT & COBHAM MUSIC SOCIETY ocms-music-org.uk
One of our most recent soloists was Sheku KannehMason, 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year. He has since played at the Proms, the BAFTA Awards Ceremony, the Royal Wedding at Windsor as well as at our OCMS Celebrity Concert last year.
Many of our recent new members were surprised that, having lived in the area for years, they had only just heard of the Oxshott and Cobham Music Society. So, to widen our local appeal, we shall be advertising all our classical concerts this season in this magazine. For 77 years the Society has had a long and distinguished history of encouraging young talent who later became leaders in their field of classical music, such as Nigel Kennedy, and also of promoting famous international musicians in its Celebrity concerts. Our previous concerts have included Tasmin Little, Stephen Hough, Nicola Benedetti and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, to name but a few. If you are interested in checking this, look at our
website where they are listed - ocms-music.org.uk. All our concerts are held on Saturday evenings in the superb acoustic and comfortable venue of Holy Trinity Church in Claygate. Most concerts begin at 8pm, except the one in January which will begin at 5.30pm. Membership is very good value at £80 per annum which covers tickets for each of our six concerts, amounting to little more than £13 per concert ! Nonmembers pay £20 per ticket and £22 for a Celebrity Concert - so it is far better value to join the Society. Compare this to the cost of tickets to hear such talent at the Wigmore Hall, the Festival Hall or the Barbican, -and all without the need to travel by train in these uncertain times!
To mark the start of this year’s programme we are offering a non-member entrant to our quiz, a prize of two tickets to the October concert or an £80 membership of the society at half price i.e £40. “What (more or less) numerically links the following composers? Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Vaughan-Williams, Dvorak” Please send your answer by email to mfwoods71@gmail.com or by post to OCMS, 7 Fishersdene, Claygate, Esher, KT10 0HT CLOSING DATE -10th September 2018. CHOIRS ON SONG FOR CHARITY
From a dramatic candle-lit procession to a feather boafestooned Musical Director, Surrey Music pulled out all the theatrical and musical stops in their ‘Life is a Song’ concert in July to raise more than £2000 for the family support charity, Home-Start Guildford. Spectacular lighting, a smattering of choreography and plenty of humour accompanied a packed and varied programme of choral delights from Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir, ensuring that the audience of 270 at Holy Trinity Church in Guildford was fully entertained from start to finish. Performing in Guildford for the first time, the two Cobham-based community choirs were delighted withthereceptiontheyreceived. ‘We thoroughly enjoyed performing in such a great venue,’ said Christine Parker, Musical Director of Elmbridge Ladies Choir. ‘The church was full and we had a very lively and appreciative audience, who were treated to some of our latest songs from our new repertoire.’ The concert was attended by the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Mike Parsons, as well as several Trustees, volunteers and staff of Home-Start.
30 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
Ruth Jubert, Patron of Home-Start Guildford, and the Mayor both spoke of the importance and power of volunteering, particularly for charities such as HomeStart, which relies on a steady supply of volunteers to meet the demand for the charity’s services. Speaking after the concert, Ruth said ‘It was fabulous. Right from the dramatic entrance and Cliff’s exuberant conducting, you could tell it was going to be good! The best thing is that everyone on stage looked as though they were enjoying themselves too. All in all, a very happy event.’ Cliff van Tonder, Surrey Music’s Founder, CEO and Musical Director, was thrilled that the concert was such a success. ‘’Life is a Song’ was all about the joy and happiness we can bring to each other. As volunteers ourselves, we know only too well that the gift of time or a small act of kindness can make a big difference to people’s lives, and we would like to thank our audience for their support and generosity. ’ For more information about Surrey Music visit

DRIVER BAD HABITS
I am on a swerve, changing direction a wee bit in my motoring column. And how about this for a talking point? Motorists in our region are rated among the country’s guiltiest of bad drivers. So there... Who says so? Not me. It is the result of a countrywide survey by the well respected Accident Advice Helpline, one of the UK’s main injury claim specialists. They help thousands of road accident victims, physically and financially, in legally dealing with the disastrous outcomes of poor and careless driving. Road hoggery (my newly invented dictionary entry) is a curse we careful and considerate drivers abhor - and this survey, citing the South East as a culprit zone, pinpoints the rank bad and their risky attitudes. Bad habits apparently creep in less than two months after drivers have removed their L-plates. And spokesman David Carter revealed:”Our study found that lots of drivers are happy to admit bad practices when they are behind the wheel - and, sadly, we have to deal with the consequences.” So just what are the bad and dodgy habits? Before their first six months are up on their full licence some motorists will have stopped holding the steering wheel in the “ten-to-two” position and are unlikely to check their rear-view mirrors every time they make a manoeuvre. There’s more, says Mr Carter. The average driver, putting their own safety at risk by abandoning the seat belt inside three months, will have run a red light inside four - and, by month five, will be making dodgy illegal U-turns as second nature. “Bad driving habits,” he adds, “can compromise safety and
32 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
our research suggests it is all too easy to let driving standards slip. In fact, a tenth of all those surveyed admitted to having had an accident due to getting slack with following the rules of the road.” So how long does it take drivers in the south-east to fall into dangerously and stupid bad habits? Here’s the Accident Advice Helpline list.... Holding the steering one-handed - three months. Abandoning the “ten-to-two” position - three months. Not checking your mirrors - three months. Changing direction without indicating - four months. Tailgating - four months. Hogging the middle of a motorway - four months. Overtaking dangerously - four months. Running a red light - four months. Driving without a seat belt - two months. Illegal U-turns - four months. Throwing litter out of a car window - three months. Fumbling for something in your bag while driving - five months. Parking on double yellow lines - four months. Pulling out in front, cutting up another car - five months. What the survey failed to reveal was how many loonies on the move in our -four-by-four territory do you see gabbing on their mobile phone or munching butties? Hands up ( but not if you are reading this while driving) if you are blameworthy for any of the above motoring sins. Come on...be honest. By Ted Macauley

BUILDING THE DREAM
How exciting to be building a new house or extending and improving an existing home. What an opportunity to create a much better living environment with garden and house working really well together. A garden designer can help assess the plot and help you ensure that you get the most from the whole plot. I’ve been to see some house extensions in my time, some which are brilliant and sadly others which unfortunately divide the plot up or have large windows facing the neighbours flank wall or doors which open to a hugely overlooked space. It would have been easy before it was built to suggest a few simple adjustments, but once its built its invariable too late and the money has been spent. Considering the landscape, both of the garden and the surrounding area means that the whole project can be informed by the context of the site and the gardens can compliment and enhance the house and your use of it. Often a landscape plan (garden design) is requested by the planners as a condition of the planning permission and it is better to have the gardens designed alongside the house, so that it’s not just a rushed afterthought once planning permission is granted. A
36 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
garden designer will be able to work alongside your architect during the design stage so that the whole site is considered, not just the house. The architect will design the house and the garden designer the landscape design. There are also good practical and economic reasons to plan the garden early. It may be that clearance or any level changes are best done whist the access to the site is at its best before the extension or house is built. Sometime it may even be appropriate to plant new screening trees as early as possible during the build if they can be protected and watered throughout the build. On a sloping site the design of the garden may even influence the levels of the house as often a key planning consideration is that the new house is in keeping with its surroundings. Your house builder may suggest building up the level with he spoil from the house excavation but this may not be a good idea and built up ground may often subside and it may also affect ground water or run off and even create an uncomfortable feeling garden space. It the garden has been designed prior to the house building work starting, then the house builders can
quote to do all the ground work and lay the sub base for patio areas according to the garden design and specification and to the levels set by the garden design. There will be economies of scale with this approach and the house builders will have the appropriate machines on site and the skills to do the ground works. The added benefit is that this ‘hard’ space can be used by the house builder for storing materials during the build and areas of the site which will be soft landscaped can be cordoned off to protect them and ensure that no rubble is dumped in your garden. An early garden design also means that the position of drain covers and underground services can be considered too, so there are no man hole covers right in the middle of the lawn or just outside the front door. Electric and gas housing units can be positioned out of the main views or screened appropriately. Once the garden design is detailed, landscapers can quote for all the hard landscaping and the soft landscaping so that a competitive price is obtained from specialists for all the landscping work. Some architects advise that the hard landscape work is added to the main house builder’s contract, but unless all the landscape plans were included in the original tender
you won’t have three competitive quotes. The other crucial consideration is that the house builders may not have the appropriate skills in landscaping and then you have to find competent people to do the soft landscaping later which is harder and sometimes not even practical (due to reduced access across newly paved areas). If the house and garden build can be phased, then once the house building work is done then a team of specialist landscapers can be brought in to do the hard and soft landscaping so that all the skilled landscaping work is done by experts who know how to set the correct falls /drainage and any other landscaping features which are detailed in the garden design. As with everything the devil is in the detail and having a good team who can help you will make the whole process run much more smoothly. A wonderful time was had by all (about 5,000 people) at the Claygate Flower & Village Show on Saturday 14 July, as villagers and visitors kicked up their heels, despite the very hot weather. The 105th annual Show was formally opened by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Shweta Kapadia at 2:00pm by the cutting of the doorway sash to the impressive exhibition marquee. Families enjoyed the wonderful adult and junior exhibits which included flowers, fruit, vegetables, art, photos, and domestic delights including cakes, cordials, wine and beer. They also loved participating with their beloved pets in the Companion Dog Show and admiring the vintage cars and motorcycles as well as watching the entertainment in the arena programme, which included local dancers (Chadsworth Stage School & Zumba Dancers), the 1st Claygate Scout and Guide Band, the Thames Valley Morris Men and displays of martial arts by Kuk Sool Won. Children of all ages were particularly thrilled with the large fun fair, the running races, the farm animals, exotic animals, ferret racing, girl’s football and the mini rugby

try-out, while younger children were all smiles as they participated in the Fancy Dress Parade, judged by Hon Vice President Mike Aspel OBE, had their faces painted, played traditional games and watched Punch and Judy. Adults enjoyed the tug-of-war, the variety of products and services provided in the Stalls Village, the food and drink, primarily provided by the Ajax Sea Scouts, the Beer Garden and the Prosecco & Gin Tent. Towards the end of the afternoon the 2018 President, Vicky Lord-Taylor presented cups and trophies to the many adult and junior prize winners as well as honouring the long serving head master of Claygate Primary School Darryl Taylor. On Sunday Evening 15 July, at the same venue,The Claygate Recreation Ground, Like The Beatles, The Beatles tribute band entertained 600 guests either standing outside, or sitting in the marquee. The Gig On The Rec has been going for 6 years now and with the flower show forms the Claygate Village Weekend. Monies raised from both events will be used to fund local charities and the rebuild of the Claygate Clubhouse which was destroyed by fire in November 2016.
