THE BAKER’S DAUGHTER
The daughter of a well-known Weybridge baker is to have her family’s tea shop tales and recipes published in a baking memoir by Pan Macmillan. Louise Johncox grew up helping her father, Peter, run his bakery & tea room, Peter’s, on Church Street, Weybridge. The tea room was a staple in Weybridge life and was known for its homely and nostalgic 1940s style and fittings until its closure in 2000.
of 2007, Louise decided to follow her father’s advice to get “her hands messy” and Peter set out to teach her to bake for the first time. Sadly, Peter died in April 2012 as Louise was still learning from him. This final period spent with her father had a special value to her: “Looking back, the experience of baking with my father brought me closer to him and taught me far more than just the recipes from the shop. I learned a lot about his life and my mother’s life and marvelled at the success they had with Peter’s and a long marriage of over 50 years.” Although Peter had been surprised that Louise was writing about the tea shop for her Ph.D, he had offered his full support, frequently asking “how’s the book going?” Although he did not live to see the book published by Pan Macmillan, Louise is sure that he would have been contented: “Family members have said how proud he would have been to know that all the hard work I had put into the book over so many years led to two published versions.” The book already has its endorsements: Louise’s mother Frankie, who had worked as the “welcoming face of the shop” and now in her 70s, has become a keen baker after testing the recipes along with other family members and friends. The chef, Albert Roux, has written the foreword. With the book finally released, Louise herself is “letting all the ideas bake” for the next. The Baker’s Daughter by Louise Johncox is published by Pan Macmillan and is available from all good book shops & retailers for £20. Written by: Henry Turner
Louise’s book, aptly named The Baker’s Daughter, is part-cookbook, part-family history, and catalogues recipes going back generations to Louise’s ancestors on the Swiss-Italian border, as well as nostalgic remembrances of life in the tea room. Each chapter is tied to a facet of life in the shop with an accompanying narrative, and includes recipes grouped by theme, such as children’s cakes, classic tea shop cakes and European pastries. All are complemented with related anecdotes and descriptions, as well as stories about individual customers. Many wrote to Louise expressing fond memories “for the handcrafted cakes and chocolates and the warm family atmosphere created in the tea room”. Louise’s work on the project began in 2007 when she was participating in a writing workshop and decided to write about her childhood in the family tea room: “I was partly inspired by the book, Toast, written by food writer Nigel Slater. I was struck by the fact that he formed stories about his childhood through food.” The idea had merit and when starting a Ph.D in Creative Writing, Louise got to work writing a 60,000 word manuscript. Looking to expand the work to include her family’s unique recipes, she quickly received a shock when she discovered that her father hadn’t recorded them in detail. Louise therefore took it upon herself to do so with her retired father. It became quickly apparent that formally interviewing Peter with a dictaphone wasn’t a substitute for practical experience. Despite their ancestry and family heritage, none of Peter’s children had opted to follow their father’s footsteps into baking. So in the autumn

WEYBRIDGE MALE There are two chances to hear the very popular Weybridge Male Voice Choir in concert in April and May. When the men of Weybridge Male Voice Choir take to the charity concert stage, they never fail to entertain. To be one of them looks fun and is fun.
Nearly everyone loves the variety of male voice choir singing, with its spine-tingling four part harmonies and great contrasts from quiet unaccompanied pieces to full-throated choruses. And Weybridge Male Voice Choir is entertaining and an accomplished local exponent. Ask anyone who has been to one of ita performances. The typical programme is very varied, including popular opera choruses, songs from musical shows, spirituals, Welsh hymns, traditional songs and ballads, plus choral arrangements of popular modern numbers, and always some solo spots from choir members and guest soloists or groups. So, entertainment and variety well sung. And we guarantee that even those of you who come to hear us often will hear many items you’ve never heard before.
Weybridge Male Voice Choir concert for RNLI at St Mary Oatlands Saturday 12th April at 7.30 p.m.
The choir is delighted to be giving this concert for two very good reasons: RNLI is a very worthwhile cause, and this will be a new experience for the choir - we have not sung at St Mary Oatlands for many, many years. Our guest soloist will be Angela Springett, accompanied by Margaret Searle. Angela sang with Cambridge University Music Society under Sir David Wilcox, and has performed with Geneva Operatic Society, Walton and Weybridge Operatic Society, and more latterly, the Ember Choral Society. Margaret started learning the piano at the age of five and later studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. She has been accompanying principal singers most of her lifetime.
VOICE CHOIR The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea in and around the UK and Eire. 236 lifeboat stations - four along the River Thames and four inland in Scotland and Ireland -; 1,000 RNLI Lifeguards, covering 200 beaches around the UK; specialist flood rescue teams across the UK and Ireland: all resources are devoted to combating water putting lives at risk. It relies entirely on public donations. Since it was founded in 1824, lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew.

GARDENING MATTERS Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are in decline globally, and one of the main causes is the loss of flowers, especially in the countryside. Increasingly, gardeners are looking for ways to help bees and other insects by providing attractive flowers for them to feed on. To do this, they often use ‘pollinatorfriendly’ plant lists, but these lists are generally based on opinion/experience, rather than scientific research. Professor Francis Ratnieks and his Ph.D student, Mikhail Gaburzov, from the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects at Sussex University completed one of the first scientific studies to put the recommending of pollinator-friendly garden flowers onto a firmer scientific footing. Funded by the Body Shop Foundation, it involved counting flower-visiting insects repeatedly over two summers as they foraged on 32 popular summer-flowering garden plant varieties in a specially planted experimental garden on the university campus (each variety in two 1x1m beds). Plant varieties included 19 species and hybrids, both native and exotic to Britain, with particular focus on 13 varieties of lavender (Lavandula spp.), as it’s known to be attractive to bees, and also four dahlias. All the plants studied had to be popular garden plants, be easily available to buy and had to flower mainly or exclusively in July/August.
The key findings were: • Bees (87%) and hoverflies (9%) were the most frequent visitors, with butterflies and moths just 2% and all other insects also 2%. • There were clear differences in the mix of bee and insect types attracted by different varieties, indicating that careful plant choice can not only help insects in general, but also a range of insects. • Open dahlias attracted many bees, especially bumble bees, whereas pompom dahlias attracted few insects because the highly-bred flowers make it difficult for insects to reach the pollen and nectar. • Highly-bred varieties of lavender, including interesting colours, such as white or pink, or hybrid lavenders, proved very attractive to insects. The researchers recommend the following plants to gardeners: • Marjoram - the best all-rounder, attracting honey bees, bumble bees, other bees, hoverflies, butterflies. • Lavender and open-flowered dahlias - the best for bumble bees. • Borage - the best for honey bees. • Erysimum Bowles Mauve (hardy wallflower) - the best for butterflies. The least attractive flowering plant to insects was the pelargonium. Although this trial isn’t exhaustive – they looked at a small selection of the thousands of plants found in a typical garden centre – the study shows clearly that planting pollinatorfriendly flowers is a win-win solution to help bees. The plants attractive to bees are just as cheap, pretty and easy to grow as those that are less attractive. Helping insects in your garden is a no-brainer: plant the right flowers and they will zoom in.

In 2012, the first Sam Beare Hospice Ladies Lunch and Fashion Show was held at the Hilton Hotel, Cobham, and has since become an annual event greathy looked forward to in the social calendar. On Monday 10th March, 126 ladies gathered once again at the Hilton to enjoy a delicious lunch and then to watch a fashion show featuring the latest Spring/ Summer looks. However, this was a show with a difference, as some of the outfits were from
Debenhams and Surrey Brides, but others came from the Hospice’s own charity shops. A fun competition was held to see how easy it would be to spot the difference and we fooled them all! The organisers, Margaret Watford and Pam Ling, have been friends for over 40 years, and following the sad death of Margaret’s husband John in 2011, they decided to raise some much-needed funds for the Hospice in
FASHION SHOW & LADIES LUNCH IN AID OF
SAM BEARE HOSPICE
recognition of the wonderful care and support John had received there. Since then, the friends have been involved in raising many thousands of pounds through a variety of events, from tombolas at Sandown to donated days from local businesses, pamper evenings and of course, the ever-popular Ladies Lunch & Fashion Show. The pair assures me that they have great fun as ‘ad hoc fund raisers’ but say this is mainly due to the wonderful
people they meet and the support of people for whom the Hospice, in the heart of Weybridge, is a most important facility. They are deeply grateful for the help they receive from friends and family, a lot of whom were ‘persuaded’ to model in this year’s event!! Apparently, plans are already underway for next year’s event, so put a note in your diary for early March and watch this space for details.

A Good Read Armand Wadsworth
The Baker’s Daughter by Louise Johncox. For over forty years, until 2000, Peter Johncox made wonderful cakes at Peter’s Tea Shop in Weybridge. As a child, his daughter Louise would sit on a flour tin at her father’s side and eat whatever was fresh from the oven. In The Baker’s Daughter, Louise weaves delightful childhood memories of life in her family tea shop with her father’s recipes, honed by over forty years of instinct and experience. From classic cream cakes and traditional buns to celebration cakes, handcrafted chocolates and her father’s signature cream meringues, these recipes come laden with the sights, smells and warmth of the tea room and bakehouse. ‘An affectionate memoir that will both entertain with stories from a bygone world of tea and cakes and inspire people to bake.’ Albert Roux.
Meet Louise Johncox Author of The Baker’s Daughter at Weybridge Books on Saturday 26th April at 2pm. There will be cakes and buns & signed books Are you challenged to be creative? Daily Rituals: How Great Minds Make Time, Find Inspiration, and Get to Work by Mason Currey. Anthony Trollope wrote three thousand words every morning before heading off to his job at the Post Office. Toulouse-Lautrec did his best work at night, sometimes even
setting up his easel in brothels, and George Gershwin composed at the piano in pyjamas and a bathrobe. Legend has it that Edith Sitwell used to lie in an open coffin for a while before starting work. This foretaste of the grave apparently inspired her macabre fiction and poetry. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in gin-fuelled bursts - he believed alcohol was essential to his creative process (not alone there, was he?). Daily Rituals examines the working routines of more than a hundred and sixty of the greatest philosophers, writers, composers and artists ever to have lived. Be inspired. Look who’s Back by Timur Vermes. It is summer 2011. Berlin. Adolf Hitler wakes up on a patch of ground, alive and well. Things have changed - no Eva Braun, no Nazi party, no war. Hitler barely recognises his beloved Fatherland, filled with immigrants and run by a woman. People certainly recognise him, though - as a brilliant, satirical impersonator who refuses to break character. The unthinkable, the inevitable, happens, and the ranting Hitler takes off, goes viral, becomes a YouTube star, gets his own TV show, becomes someone who people listen to. All the while he’s still trying to convince people that yes, it really is him, and yes, he really means it. Look Who’s Back is a black and brilliant satire of modern mediabloated society, seen through the eyes of the
Books Bought Fuhrer himself. Adolf is by turns repellent, sympathetic and hilarious, but always fascinating. Look Who’s Back is outrageously clever, outrageously funny - and outrageously plausible. Here in summary are a few highly recommended paperbacks out this April: • A Delicate Truth by John Le Carre. Fast paced Le Carre novel set in Gibraltar & Cornwall. • D-Day. The Battle For Normandy by Antony Beevor. An impressive military history of the D-Day landings and the battle for Normandy. • The Humans by Matt Haig. A hilarious story putting the absurdities of the human species in the spotlight. • And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. From the man who wrote The Kite Runner. • Dear Lumpy. Letters To A Disobedient Daughter by Roger & Louise Mortimer. • The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. The Man Booker Prize winner for 2013. • All Change by Elizabeth Jane Howard. Book five of the hugely popular Cazalet Chronicles
Book Voucher to WIN see p43 My Brother’s Keeper by Tom and Tony Bradman gives young adults a very good insight into the hell that was the trenches of the First World War. Carried away by patriotic fervour, Alfie, aged just fifteen, signs up for the army. But life in the trenches is a far cry from his dreams of glory. It’s hard and cold, and it’s boring. Alfie is desperate to see some action. But when, against the advice of his comrades, he volunteers for a raid on the German trenches, Alfie begins to understand what war means, and to see the value of the lives that are being thrown away on the Western Front. Wild Swim. The Best Places to swim outdoors in Britain, has been a bestseller in Weybridge for the last a few years. Now we have Wild Swimming - Hidden Beaches by Daniel Start. It presents Britain’s most beautiful beaches, lagoons, sea caves and amazing places to snorkel, together with the best beach cafes, local food, pubs and campsites. Where to sea kayak, coasteer and swim with dolphins and the best activities with children and families, it is the definitive guide to Britain’s secret beaches and hidden coastline.

For areas where malaria is a problem, stringent care to avoid mosquito bites is paramount. Malaria mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, so if out and about at these times, best to cover up with long sleeves and trousers. Take an insect repellent with you (usually better than buying locally) which contains up to 50% DEET. Malaria tablets may need to be started up to three weeks before travel, so again, factor this into your plans. Unleash Your Creativity!
What would happen if you gave your creativity the space, time and permission it needed to thrive? We are all born creative and creativity is an essential part of the world we live in. But many of us grow up with labels that convince us otherwise. “He’s the artistic/ musical/creative one in the family” can have a profound effect on siblings who grow up considering themselves to be less so. “She’s the academic one” can push a child into a high-flying career that stifles her creative expression. As adults juggling work, study, family responsibilities and other pressing commitments, creative pursuits can seem a luxury. For some, it’s a question of confidence. If we haven’t had much encouragement as children, we may feel self-conscious about our artistic endeavours. If you are being creative in order to hang something in a gallery, you will probably never dare to lift a paint brush. But if painting is your personal creative expression, then there is huge freedom and an opportunity for more fulfillment in your life (and if you turn out to be the next Picasso, well thank goodness you gave yourself permission to give it a try!) Even practising artists can become uncreative, repeating what’s worked in the past rather than running the risk of creating something new that might not succeed. So how can you get the creative flow going? Start by giving yourself small chunks of time in which to do whatever you enjoy. It doesn’t have to mean a change in lifestyle: 15 minutes twice a week is a great start.
It takes practice to improve at anything, so give yourself permission to start where you are in order to get better at it. I recommend Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way for anyone who wants to live a more creative life. It unlocks your creativity in a process that includes daily writing, weekly readings, a weekly date with your creative self and weekly tasks. The small print: What is your inner critic saying? (“You’ll never be good enough …”, “That’s a rubbish drawing/story/song …”) Ignore it. And do something creative. Allow yourself playtime. Don’t look for perfection – quality comes with practice If those around you are likely to belittle your early work, keep it to yourself until you become more confident.
Be Creative
Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC
PS – As you can see, I believe everyone is creative. I work with people who want a hand overcoming blocks to their creativity or are struggling with confidence or self-belief. If that’s you, let’s have a chat about how you could design a more creative life for yourself. I also facilitate the Artist’s Way course for recovering creativity, and give workshops to writers’ organisations.

A Note from the Editor As I write this note, there is a real feeling of spring in the air. So with summer in striking distance, it is time to leave the comfort of the sofa and enjoy some truly delightful local events, including spring fairs, charity walks, music festivals and more. And with so many fun national events falling in May and June – Bike Week (shake o those winter blues); National BBQ Week (make the most of the warm weather); and the Wimbledon tennis fortnight (with a real chance for a home grown winner this year) ... it’s no wonder that spring is a favourite season!
