Welcome to our May Issue! I do hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Easter break, and with a few more Bank Holidays to look forward to this month, we welcome the month of May! Isn’t it great enjoying these longer evenings? Really makes me feel like summer is just around the corner! I am delighted to welcome back guest writer, Henry Turner; this month, Henry visited some local churches and tells us all about The Churches Conservation Trust local tour he attended recently. I enjoyed an evening celebration of the first year in business for a lovely Weybridge company. See the photos of the event inside. As well as our normal crossword competitions which can be found on pages 43/44, we have another chance to win this month: this time, two sets of two tickets for a musical concert being held at The Riverhouse Barn. Turn to page 26 to enter! There are lots of other interesting bits and bobs for you to discover inside, so I’ll leave you to it. Until next time…
Wishing you all a great month, Warmest regards,

HISTORIC CHURCH TOURS 2014 The Church Conservation Trust, a charity that maintains old churches no longer in use, is hoping to invigorate Britain’s interest in exploring the hidden historical gems around us by organising several tours through May to October across the country. I was offered the chance to investigate Surrey’s “Lords and Gentry” tour and visit three of the four churches, each sharing historical links to the aristocracy, that
participants would visit by coach. The tour’s first destination is the village of Albury. Nestled within the grounds of the imposing mansion is the small Saxon church of St Peter & St Paul. Surrounded by grass and sporting an original medieval porch, it looks idyllic. I met local volunteer Daphne Foulsham, who took me into the church through its huge original door. Stepping through, it felt like
I’d travelled back in time. The church was a bright and open space, made airy by its relative emptiness. It seemed devoid of ornamentation; its white-washed walls were bare for the most part, except for a large painted medieval mural of St. Christopher and Christ. Daphne told me that the striking work had been washed over to save it from the Reformation and the image was reportedly exposed inadvertently by a workman fitting a nearby plaque; he was said to have been terrified as, atop his ladder, he was brought face-to-face with a staring saint. The church was key to village life, but things changed when the landowners sold out to the Drummonds, who came into conflict with the local congregation. The parishioners were convinced ultimately to move to a new church, paid for by the family. This left them free to alter the old church, adding in a chapel designed by Pugin, famed for designing the Palace of Westminster’s interior. The colourful Gothic splendour of this small adjoining room strikes a real contrast with its spartan surroundings. The next stop was St Mary’s in Stoke d’Abernon, Surrey’s oldest church, which is still in use to this day. Its interior was large, well-ornamented and full of objects showcasing different points in English history. Stephen Chater, the man running the tour, spoke with me about it and the work of the CCT. He observed that churches offer a lens into the history of Britain, and as they change and adapt over time, they exhibit evidence of the standards of those who worshipped within them. St Mary’s itself is a living example of this and evidence of its Saxon origins were apparent. An inaccessible doorway, visible high on one of the walls, is believed to have
opened onto a Saxon Lord’s private gallery. Like many others, this church suffered from the Reformation: monuments near the altar were smashed, along with the original stained glass. Nevertheless, many preReformation relics remained, such as a pair of Britain’s oldest military brass memorials., and these were later complemented by an intricate 18th century pulpit. The last church to see was St George’s, Esher, a Tudor church in Esher’s town centre. It sports a quaint stonework exterior and has a notable original clock, still in fully working order. If St Mary’s had struck me as a fusion, this was an outright amalgamation. Upon entering the church, my eye was immediately drawn to an out-of-place Georgian gallery built into the south wall. This “pew” was built by the Duke of Newcastle. With its own entrance, it enabled the haves to avoid the have-nots when attending services. In a bid to keep things fashionable, the family also replaced all the church’s windows. The church is also known for a Royal connection: one marble memorial is dedicated to the death of the popular Princess Charlotte, who, with her husband Prince Leopold, was a part of the congregation while the couple lived at Claremont House. But many elements pre-date the 19th century. The building possesses an original 18th century pulpit and, impressively, has the original Tudor beams visible above in the roof. All in all, it was a pleasant day spent exploring Surrey’s heritage. It’s clear that the CCT does important work in maintaining our living history. A Good Read Armand Wadsworth
Born in Weybridge in 1972, Howard and Austin Mutti-Mewse were raised on a diet of black & white movies. Encouraged by their grandmother, as teenagers they started writing to the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era. I Used To Be In Pictures is a collection of correspondence between Austin and Howard and some of the biggest film stars from the silent and ‘golden’ era of film-making. The brothers’ foray into this glamorous world began with a simple fan letter to Lillian Gish, followed by another to Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. This gave rise to a wealth of letter-writing. Yet, the most interesting part of this story is that Austin and Howard’s unique relationships with these screen legends developed long after the height of their celebrity, a quarter of a century after the cameras had stopped rolling, at a time when they were able to reflect back on lives lived in the spotlight. During the nineties, the brothers were entertained by stars, including Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor who, thrilled at this late recognition, invited them into their homes in California to reminisce over afternoon tea. Accompanied by many intimate and candid photographs of screen icons both at the height of their stardom and in later years, this is a collection for anyone looking for an insider glimpse into arguably Hollywood’s finest hour. Howard and Austin have captured it all in this beautiful book. Mandela. My Prisoner. My Friend. By Christo Brand. Christo Brand was an Afrikaaner farm boy and Nelson Mandela was the black son of a tribal chief who trained as a lawyer to take
up the fight against apartheid on behalf of a whole nation. Their opposing worlds collided when Christo, a raw recruit from the country’s prison service, was sent to Robben Island to guard the notoriously dangerous terrorists there. The two of them, a boy of 18 and a long-suffering freedom fighter then aged 60, could well have become bitter enemies. Instead, they formed an extraordinary friendship through small human kindnesses. When Nelson Mandela’s mother died, he was refused permission to go to her funeral. Mandela, her eldest son, wept with shame and despair. Christo was to witness that despair many times during his years as Mandela’s prison warder. When his wife Winnie secretly brought their tiny granddaughter to Robben Island, it was Christo who risked his own freedom to put the baby in Mandela’s arms. As President of South Africa, he called for Christo and gave him a job in the archives department in Parliament. He invited Christo and his family into his home and advised his two sons on their careers. A few weeks before his death, Mandela made another call, to say goodbye. This book tells the story of their friendship in Christo’s words for the first time. This I find an appealing concept. The Bookshop That Floated Away by Sarah Henshaw. It’s the true story of how Henshaw set up a bookshop on a boat and set out on a bookselling journey for six months. Books were bartered for food, accommodation, bathroom facilities and cake. During the
Books Bought journey, the barge suffered a flooded engine, went out to sea, got banned from Bristol and, on several occasions, floated away altogether. This account follows the ebbs and flows of Sarah’s journey as she sought to make her vision of a floating bookshop a reality. Do No Harm. Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery by Henry Marsh. What is it like to be a brain surgeon? How does it feel to hold someone’s life in your hands, to cut into the stuff that creates thought, feeling and reason? How do you live with the consequences of performing a potentially life-saving operation when it all goes wrong? In neurosurgery, more than in any other branch of medicine, the doctor’s oath to ‘do no harm’ holds a bitter irony. Operations on the brain carry grave risks. Every day, Henry Marsh must make agonising decisions, often in the face of great urgency and uncertainty. If you believe that brain surgery is a precise and exquisite craft, practised by calm and detached surgeons, this gripping, brutally honest account will make you think again. With astonishing compassion and candour, one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons reveals the fierce joy of operating, the profoundly moving triumphs, the harrowing disasters, the haunting regrets and the moments of black humour that characterise a brain surgeon’s life. It is an unforgettable insight into the countless human dramas that take place in a busy modern hospital. Above all, it is a lesson in the need for hope when faced with life’s most
Book Voucher to WIN see p 43 difficult decisions. Novelists of books for teenagers and young adults are not afraid to tackle difficult and sometimes controversial issues. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is a beautifully written and riveting look at anorexia. Cassie and Lia are best friends, and united in their quest to be thin. But when Cassie is found dead in a motel room, Lia must question whether she continues to lose weight, or choose life instead. “Brilliant, intoxicating, full of drama, love, and, like the best books of this kind, hope”. Melvin Burgess, The Observer. Heart Break Girl by Malorie Blackman. The new novel from the Children’s Laureate is a companion story to Boys Don’t Cry. Something happened to Mel when she was just a little girl and it haunts her every waking moment. When she discovers that she’s pregnant at seventeen, she’s terrified that the events of the past could reoccur. Suitable for 12+. ‘Blackman is a bold, engaging storyteller whose intellectual daring and clear prose reaches kids whom other authors don’t’ Amanda Craig, Sunday Times The Great Moon Confusion by Richard Byrne. Aldrin the raccoon likes to think he knows it all, and if he doesn’t, he just makes it up. But are the bears in the forest really the reason why the moon seems to be disappearing? A mix of humour, science and psychology make this a winning picture book for the under-fives.

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY As the weather warms up, garden pests come into their own. This month, we turn our attention to the aphid. Ignore this pest at your peril. The aphid can wreak havoc in two ways. Firstly, it’ll cause direct damage to the plant by draining vital cell sap through its needle-like mouthpart, and secondly it’s a known carrier of plant viruses. They are found clustered all over the growing tip of a plant, where it’s easier to feed on fresh new cells. There are two words associated with the aphid that should strike fear in every gardener’s heart: parthenogenesis and viviparity, known in the bug trade as P & V, and the aphid has both. Parthenogenesis means that reproduction of progeny can occur without fertilisation, or put another way, a female doesn’t need the services of a male to produce offspring. Viviparity is the ability to produce live young, without having to lay eggs to hatch out later. And the news gets worse: in cool weather, full reproduction might take 21 days, but when it’s hot, it’s job done in around 8! One single aphid can become a million in a flash.. Aphids are also known as blackfly or greenfly, and they can also be yellow, grey, brown or pink. All aphids will look similar in appearance. Dealing with the aphids outdoors * vigilance: catch them early before the population explodes in your back garden. Avoid giving plants too much nitrogen-rich fertiliser, as this encourages the lush growth that aphids love * wipe young aphids off with your finger & thumb * prune out any aphid-infested shoots and put them into the dustbin * allow Nature to lend a helping hand. The
ladybird, hoverfly and lacewing are particularly partial to aphids and will help clean up for you. To encourage these natural predators, stop using pesticides round the garden and grow the plants that they love best, such as poached egg plant and calendulas. * spray with insecticidal soap and water. I suppose this is a modern interpretation of Victorian ladies chucking their washing up water over the roses. The soap isn’t poisonous, it merely strips off the waxy covering from the pest so that the little darlings dehydrate to death. * protection. By spraying with a systemic insecticide, you’ll achieve two things. Firstly, the chemical will kill on contact with any insect that happens to be on the plant. Secondly, the active ingredient is absorbed by the plant and drawn into the cell sap, so that any feeding sap-sucker that stops for sustenance is killed off on feeding. Auntie Planty is a qualified horticulturist who offers gardening know-how sessions in your own garden. Catch her on Brooklands Radio every other Friday, at 14.30. © 2014 Valerie McBride-Munro

MEDICAL MATTERS!!
DIABETES Let’s take a look at diabetes over the next few issues...there is an epidemic that we need to be taking seriously. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) accounts for about 85% of all cases of diabetes and is often, but not always, related to lifestyle. There are strong family links with T2DM and the risks can be as high as 75% for some individuals. With T2DM, we are basically looking at two issues. The pancreas does not produce as much insulin as is needed, along with the body being unable to use that insulin effectively. This is known as insulin resistance and can be the biggest challenge with T2DM. Insulin is needed to regulate blood sugar levels, and a reduced level of insulin that works less efficiently leads to a rise in blood sugar levels. This is usually when a diagnosis is made. However, there are manageable factors which can help reduce the body’s resistance to insulin. The two most common factors contributing to this resistance are a lack of exercise and excess weight, so an increase in activity levels, weight loss and a change in diet can have huge health benefits and may even help renormalise blood sugar levels. Being more active generally and trying to factor this into a daily routine is usually most effective and sustainable. Diet is fundamental to managing diabetes by minimising sugar intake and managing sensible carbohydrate portions. We will be looking at this more in the next issue.... Look at it this way...
Have you every felt stuck in your life? When we feel stuck, we usually feel we don’t have any choice. Take, for example, being stuck in traffic. How do you feel? Relaxed, happy to watch the world go by slowly - or maybe not go by at all? Worried – now you’re going to be late …? Annoyed – why can’t the wretched cars just move so that you can keep driving …? Say I’m in the last category, feeling annoyed. The longer I sit in this traffic jam and in this perspective, the angrier I get, the more stressed I feel, the more I become focussed on wanting to move ahead, the more I feel stuck and powerless ... Getting angry and feeling stressed aren’t going to clear the traffic or give my car wings. They’re only going to affect my mood, which will influence my actions (and possibly my health too). At this point, I’m not only physically stuck in traffic, I’m also in a perspective of feeling stuck. So, what can I do? I can find some new perspectives and give myself some choice. I have the power to choose how I look at each area of my life. For example, new perspectives while stuck in traffic might be gratitude - enjoying a gift of time in which to practise some deep breathing and improve my wellbeing; curiosity – looking out for what I can see that would otherwise have passed me by at speed; enjoyment – listening to something funny on the radio or my smartphone; freedom – being able to give more attention to learning something new from the radio or
concentrating better on a recorded language course or making plans for the future. Once I’ve found some new perspectives, I can explore them to see which one feels the most exciting. When I’ve made my choice, I can think of all the actions that are possible from that new perspective. Of course, there might be consequences to being stuck in traffic that cause me problems, but by choosing a more powerful perspective, I can be more creative about resolving them. The small print: Warning: Changing your perspective can change your life. When you’re thinking up different perspectives, throw in the complete opposite of your default one, however unlikely – it will open up your thinking. Choose a perspective that has you feeling more powerful and alive.
Be Creative
Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC
PS – As you can see, I believe we have choice in all areas of life, even when it doesn’t seem like it. What belief keeps you stuck? And, if there was one thing that could help you change perspective, what would it be? If you need a hand, let’s have a chat about how you could get unstuck and enjoy life more.

Oatlands School Half Marathon Team Exceeding all expectations! On 30th March, a group of 20 intrepid parents from Oatlands School took part in the inaugural Brooklands Half Marathon to raise funds for two very worthwhile charitable causes. Braving the cold at 8am, the team had tremendous support along the route from a number of families whose children attend Oatlands School and they exceeded all expectations in terms of performance and fundraising efforts. With every member of the team over the finish line within 2 hours & 4 minutes, the team raised an incredible £11000, against an original target of £5000. Half of the monies raised is going to St Peter’s Hospital Little Oaks Ward, the children’s oncology unit, in support of seven year old Harvey Broekhuizen, an ex-pupil of Oatlands School. At the age of six, Harvey was diagnosed with leukaemia whilst on holiday in Portugal. He had to be blue-lighted to a specialist oncology hospital 3 hrs drive from where they were staying, where he received emergency treatment to make him healthy enough to fly back to the UK. Once home, Harvey had 6 months of intense treatment, with the first couple of months spent in hospital. The treatment sadly caused him to lose his
sight, which has only partially returned. Now in remission, Harvey’s maintenance treatment involves daily oral chemotherapy, a monthly visit to St Peter’s Hospital for another type of chemotherapy and steroids, as well as a visit to the Royal Marsden every three months for another form of chemotherapy. The school decided it wanted to raise money for a charity related to Harvey’s condition, and after speaking with Harvey’s mum, Nital Broekhuizen, they decided on the Little Oaks Ward at St Peter’s Hospital. The school’s PTA also decided that they wanted to give some of the money to Harvey & his family to have a day out. Harvey has decided he would like to take his family to go and see Matilda at the theatre. The other half of the money raised will be going towards the development of a new sensory facility on the school site. The specially selected interactive equipment can benefit all children but is of particular benefit to children with special educational needs. The Oatlands School team was spear-headed by Julie Martin & Graeme Fergusson (both parents from Oatlands School), & Jacksons Stops & Staff was the local corporate sponsor.
