This month Buy to Let Hunter are chatting to a client who uses his investment properties to finance his retirement: Paul was busy running his own fire safety business and never intended to become a landlord, but when his son went to uni Paul found his digs woefully lacking. “I borrowed money against the business and bought an old terraced house.” His little darling moved in whilst Daddy, in his spare time, did the place up, soon enabling more students to move in. It then dawned on Paul that he was making money on the student rentals, so he decided to cut his losses, focus on the Southampton lets and sold up the fire biz. But, as he became more (ahem) senior and less keen on being a landlord, Paul changed tack, sold all the student lets and invested in something more conventional: a cottage by the sea. “When I first bought it I just loved it, always imagining we would live there – a short walk to the town or beach and just a bike ride to the New Forest.” Paul took this new project on with gusto, with visions of his imminent retirement with his lovely wife, Pauline. But, once finished, Paul wasn’t ready to retire, so he handed the management of his perfect “holiday home” over to Buy to Let Hunter.

cottage became fantastically desirable. “Now I am converting the old art studio in the garden to a Summer house.” After a discussion with the BTLH team it seemed a no-brainer to make the small investment to get an even greater return. BTLH can help you find the perfect holiday home, too. Whether it is a place for your own retirement one day, or to use in the meantime in conjunction with renting out or if it is dedicated to guests is totally up to you. But staycations have never been more popular, so if you have been toying with the idea, the time may be now. And Paul’s plans for the future? “I’m too happy where I live now, too entrenched in a fabulous community and frankly too busy to retire!” laughed Paul – but it is nice to know the perfect bolt hole is there waiting for them should they make the decision to pick up their bucket and spade and go fossicking on the beach. In the meantime, Paul just cashes his cheques and plans his next holiday. Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. Easter holiday fun with the kids

I’m sure most parents are more than a little fed up with hearing the phrase ‘I’m bored….’ It’s been a difficult year for most of us, especially children/teens who have desperately missed their usual socialising at school and in their free time. Parents have tried their best to try to keep their spirits up by keeping them busy, but a whole year of coming up with new ideas can be a little draining for even the most inventive individuals. Here are a few ideas that you can try over the Easter break! 1. TakE a vIrTuaL TrIp – a number of museums, zoos and other organisations are offering virtual tours, one of our favourites is the Johnson Space Center – Boeing leads the tour through the Houston, Texas facility, covering the history and future of aerospace innovation. Have a search online for some interesting tours, most of which are free of charge. 2. pLay comE dInE wITH mE – ideal with teens, firstly decide on your teams and a prize for the winner(s), each team can then decide on a theme for their evening and create menus. You may want to record the preparation, the meals, and any entertainment, to show to friends or grandparents. At the end of each teams meal the guests score the chef out of 10, the scoring is kept secret – put score cards into labelled envelopes until the big reveal at the end.

5. gET crafTy – Easter gives us a whole host of new craft projects that can be undertaken, pompom chicks, egg cress men, egg decorating, easter bunnies, easter bonnets and cards. The list is almost endless and will provide hours of fun to both little and older children. If you can’t face the mess, then wait for a dry day and take the activities out into the garden. 6. Light some candles, put soothing music on, make homemade face packs and scrubs, soak your feet in warm scented water and treat each other to a hand massage, manicure or pedicure for a real treat!

Green light for Weybridge After extra challenges due to COVID-19 and more than a year of careful evaluation, visits to other Sheds and completing the arduous planning process, the Trustees of the Weybridge Men’s Shed Charity are delighted that their aim for Weybridge to have its own Shed is about to become a reality. The buildings are on order for delivery in April 2021. Starting in Australia in 1998, Men’s Sheds are now a truly global phenomenon providing real and relevant purposes. In the UK and Ireland Men’s Sheds are growing at the rate of more than 2 per week. Shed’s activities are whatever their members want them to be, but they are all about being a welcoming safe place for people, generally but not always, men, to

16 Looklocal Magazine - April 2021

go to share hobbies and skills and/or learn new ones, make and repair things, do community projects and of course to drink tea, meet neighbours and new mates, and above all share in the banter. To start with we expect our Shed to be doing woodwork and carpentry, and some computer/internet familiarisation. That may change as members interests change.. Being ready to open for the summer after Lockdown has eased, the Weybridge Shed will be welcoming people who have skills and trades to share, as well as those who just want some company. Attendance will cost a cup of coffee or tea - no fees, and apart from health and safety requirements, nothing is formal. Find out more on www.weybridgeshed.org

to get its own Men’s Shed Right now the Trustees would also like to hear from people (email: info@weybridgeshed.org) who would like to join them in being part of the Shed team, who maybe have some tools that they no longer need, or who know where there are materials that could be upcycled into new use. And, of course, Trustees will always greatly appreciate offers of financial support to get the sheds built and equipped. Maybe you know of someone recently retired with time on their hands and a handy trade skill or knowledge, or maybe someone who always wanted to try their hand at something new. Tools and materials will be provided. Maybe someone who is recently bereaved, made redundant, or divorced, and who

would like a new place to hang out. Banter is more fun standing Shoulder-to-Shoulder doing something worthwhile; even if that’s just chatting over a cuppa! Scheduled to open in July, the plan is for our Shed to run 3-hour sessions, 3 times a week, with about 10-12 people attending each one; nothing formal. Every shed in the UK and elsewhere has its own success stories; there’s even a Men’s Shed Radio. For more information and news on the Weybridge Men’s Shed check out the website www.weybridgeshed.org, and several social media sites, including Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WeybridgeMensShed1) and NextDoor.com

Book Reviews APRIL 2021 ‘The Survivors’ by Jane Harper (Hardback £14.99) Jane Harper’s latest novel is set in the Tasmanian beach community of Evelyn Bay, a place that only comes alive during the summer. The title refers to a shipwreck. Kieran, who feels responsible for two deaths, including that of his brother in a fatal storm 12 years earlier, returns to help his mother move house. When the body of a woman is found on the beach, people start wondering if this is somehow connected to the earlier tragedies. Another great crime mystery and a compelling story of guilt and grief.

‘The Bass Rock’ by Evie Wyld (Hardback £16.99) In her first two novels, After the Fire, A Still Small Voice and All the Birds, Singing, both set in Australia and England, Evie Wyld wrote with the some intensity about toxic masculinity and emotional damage. Her latest novel The Bass Rock is set in Scotland and the action occurs across three time frames, while connecting to the themes of her previous work. The book is divided into several parts, each stepping from Vivian to Ruth to Sarah and then forwards into the future. The elegant structure of the novel and the delicate links between the three narrative threads lead, inevitably, to challenging reading, but as always with Evie Wyld this is a fascinating, well constructed novel well worth the effort.

‘Cunning Women’ by Elizabeth Lee (Hardback £14.99) In 1620s Lancashire the Haworth family are outcasts, dwelling beyond the village. A mother with an unruly son, conflicted daughter Sarah, and little Annie, the youngest of all. Many respectable villagers seek them out for plant medicine, while others require the kind of cunning aid that some would describe as witchcraft. As young Sarah Haworth grows into her gift and learns from her mother, she finds herself tempted not only by the strength of her power but also her longing for a normal life away from hunger and fear. This debut novel full of history, herblore, suspense and romance is published on 22nd April.

Zesty semolina sponge cake in syrup Revani This months Recipe is from

Özlem’s Turkish Table www.gbpublishing.co.uk/ ozlemsturkishtable (link includes a 25% discount on a signed book when you buy Ozlem’s embroidered Turkish Table apron).

Ingredients Revani is a deliciously moist semolina sponge cake in light syrup, very popular at my Turkish cookery classes. It is easy to make, light and fluffy in texture - a real crowd pleaser. Revani has been a popular dessert with Turks since the Ottoman period. It is believed this dessert was named Revani when the Ottomans conquered the city of Yerevan in today’s Armenia. Revani has many variations and is enjoyed especially in the Eastern Mediterranean countries including Turkey. Rose water, orange flower water, or orange zest can also be added to Revani for a natural delicate flavouring. Revani is often decorated with ground pistachios or desiccated coconut and served with a cup of çay or Türk kahvesi.

(Serves 6-8) 165g/6oz coarse semolina 200g/7oz sugar 45ml/3 tablespoons all-purpose/ plain flour 5ml/1 teaspoon baking powder 225g/8oz plain whole milk yoghurt 3 medium eggs, beaten 60ml/4 tablespoons light olive oil 10ml/2 teaspoons vanilla extract Zest of 1 lemon Juice of ½ lemon

For the syrup: 300g/10 ½ oz sugar 360ml/12fl oz water Juice of ½ lemon Ground pistachio nuts and desiccated coconut to serve

Method Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 First make the syrup, as it needs to cool down. Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan at a medium heat. Stir and bring the mixture to the boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to low and let the syrup simmer for about 10 minutes, uncovered. Add the lemon juice, mix well and simmer for another 5 minutes. Turn the heat off and let the syrup cool down while you make the semolina cake. Grease a square or rectangular baking dish 8in x 10in/20cm x 27cm with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Beat the eggs and combine with the sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat and combine well for a few minutes, until the sugar dissolves. Then add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil, yoghurt, semolina, flour, the baking powder and beat well. Stir in the vanilla extract, lemon juice and lemon zest and mix well until you have a smooth batter. Pour the batter into the greased baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, until the cake is golden brown. To check; insert a toothpick into the centre of the cake, if it comes out clean, that means the cake is cooked. If not, bake for another 3-5 minutes. Using a large spoon, drizzle the cooled syrup all over the semolina cake. Let the cake absorb the syrup and cool down. Once cool, cut the Revani in square or diamond shapes; you can serve Revani with ground pistachio and desiccated coconut over the top like we do back home. Afiyet Olsun.

Citroen AIRCROSS CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

If you are considering splashing some cash on a new car hang on for a wee while.... There is a real treat heading for our showrooms this summer - it is the brand spanking new Citroen Aircross SUV. The facelifted newcomer has undergone an extensive overall and cuts a handsome shape for its June debut. It was not too bad a looker before its updated changes with useful and atttractive colour choices for its body. But now its a wow.... It’s a real temptation with a terrific choice of 70 colour combinations and choices of exterior styling that leaves the car’s appearance to the fussiest buyer’s preferences. So what’s different from its older predecessors? It now advances with Citroen’s Advance Comfort seats as standard plus a whole fresh raft of ultimate, confidence-boosting safety systems. Not only that: this model is mega on practicality with a redesigned centre console - and with an even roomier storage area for your holiday baggage or goodies for your celebrations and family entertaining get-togethers.

24 Looklocal Magazine - April 2021

The Aircross, with a choice of diesel or petrol power, will be available with a 1.2 three cylinder or a 1.5 four cylinder engine. It is compact and funky without looking silly and it will be equally at ease on the open and inviting roads as well as the nose-to-tail crawls in the hectic and frustrating city streets. Five wide seats, with spreadeagle leg and arm room aplenty and all-round visability ensure the driver and his passengers do not suffer cramped discomforts or miss any of the sights on the longest treks or during the most irritating city jams. As for fuel consumption no problem. The combined estimate is a return of between 56 and 71 mpg.In the city? Around 48-60mpg. And on a motorway or highway run you can confidently rely on a return of 63-81 mpg for your heard-earned. There is not much more I can say except that for a starting price of £18,180 this singluar presence on a jam-packed SUV scene is a deal not be missed. Go for it... or at least take a long look at Citroen’s painstaking effort before you plunge into the SUV market.

Inspiration!

Letting Go A friend was telling me that she wanted to re-train and was excited about her new career. But she was just emerging from a difficult marriage and stressful divorce, and was feeling resentful that she could only apply to her local university, as she had to live within a reasonable distance of her young child’s father. If it weren’t for him, she said bitterly, she could apply to several other universities. Her emotions were so strong that they were clouding her thinking.

front of your face. What do you see?

I asked how she would be feeling about it without thoughts of her ex-husband getting in the way. “Oh,” she said. “Well, … ”. The town was actually ideal because the local university had some of the best courses in her subject. Transport to the university from her home was easy. There were good local childcare options where she lived. She had good friends nearby, and their support had really helped her through some tough times. And there was beautiful countryside minutes away from her home where she loved going for long walks.

Many of us have had a tough year, with all kinds of things going on in our personal and professional lives. But often the situations we’re struggling with are made worse by the way we think and feel about them.

“So,” I said, “it sounds like it’s only thoughts of him that make you not want to study there. What if you let go of him and your stress and resentment?”

Take a deep breath, and let it all go,

“Oh,” she said again, after a short silence. “It would be ideal!” When she heard herself say that, she could hardly believe how lucky she was. She did apply, and is over the moon that she’s just been offered an unconditional place on the course she really wants, starting this September. It can be all too easy to fall into the trap of allowing our emotions to cloud our thinking. Has that ever happened to you? Let’s do an experiment: take your hand and place it in

26 Looklocal Magazine - April 2021

In fact, when your hand is too close to your face, you can’t see much of anything, let alone your hand. That’s what it’s like when we get fixated on a problem. It’s all we see, all we think about, and we don’t even see that clearly because our emotions are too strong to let us see the issue as it really is.

How can you put some space between you and the problem? Could you step back and look at it from a different angle? Imagine it’s happening to a friend – what advice would you give? Or simply take some time to meditate!
