From the EDITOR

Welcome to Look Local in February! We are delighted to bring you our first magazine of this New Year, and wish you all the very best for a fabulous 2018! We have been making plans for the year ahead, and having recently added to our collection another magazine, The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local, there is certainly lots that needs doing around here, so our first job was to find an extra pair of hands to help out. As luck would have it, fate worked in our favour and as a result, I am delighted to welcome Michelle Hudspith to our Look Local team. I’m very sure she will be a great asset to Look Local and I am very much looking forward to working with her over the coming months. We have plenty more to share with you in this issue. You may remember that in the past we have covered the amazing work of Mr Phil Hawkins. Having been a teacher in the UK for some 20 years, he followed his heart in 2005 and took a sabbatical from his UK teaching job at the nearby Heathside School, Weybridge. Phil headed to Brazil to work; having seen how Brazil’s education system was in crisis, he wanted to help, so he set up a charity, ran workshops and guided many staff in many schools to a better way of teaching. Since then, his work and travels have taken him to many places. We hear about his latest venture which finds him in Lebanon. Along with a dear friend of mine, Rachael Underwood, they have together given hope and education to some very deserving children. It is with absolute pleasure that we present a Look Local exclusive feature, written by Phil, about the invaluable work they are undertaking. In addition to this, we have news from St James’ Church and also from nearby Leatherhead Theatre about a selection of great productions taking place there over the coming months, plus of course, all our regular features too. Happy Valentine’s Day for 14th !

Approved Oven Cleaners www.ovencleaning.net Aside from meeting their essential needs, such as sustenance, shelter and medical care, puppy socialisation Tel: 0208 393 1935 or 07906 567646 should feature very high on the list. This is the process whereby a puppy learns life skills on how to behave and be sociable. Puppy socialisation begins from the day they are born. For the first 6-8 weeks, their mother and siblings will teach them the basics. But once they ‘leave home’ it’s very much down to you, the owner. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we take on puppies from 11 weeks old. They have their own Puppy Nursery where we guide them through their all-important early life. Mixing and interacting with other dogs of similar age is essential, but they mustn’t over-exercise, as their bodies are still developing. Providing comfy beds and quiet areas means they can rest when they need to. While they love to play, they instinctively know when they’ve had enough and need to chill out. Puppies also need more food more frequently than adult dogs. Several smaller meals a day will ensure they have all the nutrition required to develop and grow. And don’t forget lots of human interaction, as this teaches them you are leaders of their pack. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Weybridge.

27 CHURCH ST, WEYBRIDGE KT 1 3 8DF

Could there be a resident, a company director, an employee, a shopper or a café frequenter in Weybridge who is not familiar with the graceful spire of St. James’ Church, especially when floodlit at night? In addition to the expected functions of a church, St. James is also a focal point for the community throughout the year, one dramatic example being the night of the fire at the Health Centre when the church opened its doors around midnight to provide hot drinks, comfort and a refuge for those evacuated from their homes. St. James’ Church was built in 1848 by John Loughborough Pearson, a renowned ecclesiastical architect who was also responsible for Truro Cathedral (1880) and St. Peter’s in neighbouring Hersham (1887). As any organisation conserving a stately home will confirm, a constant headache is how to cover the

12 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018

costs of maintaining a historical and architecturally important building. To this end, The Friends of St. James’ Church became a registered charity in 1988 with the sole purpose of raising funds to help with the building’s repairs, restoration and maintenance through membership fees and fund-raising events. See us on the allaboutweybridge website. To ensure this beautiful landmark remains for future generations, will you please consider becoming a member? Members can be of any faith or none and the subscription per person is any amount you wish over £10 per annum (Gift Aid increases this by 25%). It’s easy to join, just call either 01932 845174 (Membership Secretary) or 01932 848253 (Chairman). Observant readers may have noted that 2018 will be the 30th anniversary of this charity – let’s give St. James a birthday present!

through PAYE on your wages), then you will be expected to make payments on account. These are instalments for next year’s tax bill and are normally 50% of your current year’s bill. As you’ve said, the first one is payble in January and the second in July. Moving forward, they are designed to smooth your tax payments, but in the first year, they can be quite a hit to the cashflow, as you will essentially be paying 1.5 times your tax bill this January. If you think your income and tax bill will be lower next year, you may opt to reduce your payments on account. If you reduce your payments on account too low, you’ll be charged interest. If they are too high, HMRC will of course refund you. Bank interest in my tax code I have just received a tax code and it includes bank interest. Is that normal? Some taxpayers may notice a change in their affairs. HMRC has announced it is planning to use data received from banks and building societies to update tax calculations for 2016/17 and to update tax codes for 2017/18. In your circumstance, HMRC is likely to have used the interest you received in 2016/17 as an estimate to adjust your tax code for 2017/18. At the moment, HMRC only has the ability to do this for sole accounts, not joint accounts. If you’re self-employed, the change should not have a big impact because you will report the bank interest on your tax return as normal and settle your tax liability at the normal July and January payment dates. If you’re employed or in receipt of a pension, you may see a higher amount of tax taken from your income but many people will be eligible for the Personal Savings Allowance. You should always check your tax code or tax calculations. If you spot an error or you believe your actual income will differ significantly to the adjustment to your tax code, you should contact HMRC.

THE MOON WALK LONDON - SATURDAY 12 MAY - WWW.WALKTHEWALK.ORG

In 1996, Nina Barough CBE, founder and chief executive of Woking-based charity, Walk the Walk, woke up one morning with the idea of power walking a marathon in a bra to raise money for breast cancer. Later that year, she led a group of 13 women, wearing decorated bras, as they power walked The New York City Marathon. Two months later, Nina was diagnosed with breast cancer and continued to power walk to keep positive. This was the starting point for Walk the Walk and the famous MoonWalks. The charity is now celebrating its 21st year, and has raised an incredible £121 million to help fight breast cancer. From small beginnings, Walk the Walk has grown into the largest grant-making breast cancer charity in the UK. The MoonWalk London now sees 15,000 women and men pounding the pavements of the capital wearing the charity’s trademark brightly decorated bras. Walk the Walk grants funds to help research into breast cancer and to help improve the lives of those with cancer now. £30 million has been granted to Breast Cancer Now for ground-breaking research which has included their Legacy Study, The Tissue Bank and the Generations Study. The charity also gives grants to Penny Brohn UK in Bristol, Maggie’s Cancer Centres in Scotland and The Haven in London and Leeds, all providing essential support and care in their own unique ways.

22 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018

Walk the Walk has also funded 609 scalp coolers in 214 NHS Hospitals across the UK. Every day, these machines are helping cancer patients to keep their hair whilst undergoing chemotherapy. Women, men and young people are encouraged to unleash their inner cowgirls (and cowboys!) by signing up for this year’s Wild West-themed MoonWalk London. The night-time challenge, taking place on Saturday 12 May, marks the 21st MoonWalk London. It is a funfilled night not to be missed! The charity is expecting a posse of thousands of people, stampeding through the streets of London at the one-of-a-kind event. Walkers have two distances to choose from - the Half Moon (13.1 + 2 miles), or the Full Moon (26.2 miles), and with plenty of time to train, there is no better time to sign-up! People should think John Wayne and Dolly Parton as they decorate their Wild West themed bras. However, there’s no 9-5 at this event, as it starts at midnight! Walkers will saddle up and swing through the saloon doors as they pass some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including the London Eye, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Help Walk the Walk fight breast cancer by signing up for The MoonWalk London on Saturday 12 May 2018 www.walkthewalk.org

Auntie Planty Gardening FEBRUARY TIPS

WINTER LITTLE PEOPLE

Your mood during the winter months can be a little dark and dreary, but this is no good reason to allow your garden to follow suit. There are many exciting shrubs and trees that are at their best during these cold months, but what I say now is don’t forget the little people! Some winter plants have extremely interesting leaves, and with others, it is the flower that brings the sparkle. My first winter stalwart, the mini cyclamen, turns up trumps with both. The little nodding flowers range in colour from deep magenta to pinks various to white. But I never tire at looking at the exquisite silver or white marbled markings on its dark green kidney-shaped leaves. Mini cyclamen can survive brief and sometimes prolonged periods at temperatures below zero, especially if they are covered with snow. As they are fairly small plants, it’s good to plant them where you will be able to see them easily – in big clumps on the side of a path, or under a tree. My second choice is the flowering pansy. Here, plant breeders have been busy and have created a plant that responds to a drop in temperature: the colder the weather, the bigger the flowers will be! If that wasn’t clever enough, someone else managed to insert the trailing gene into the viola (the mini pansy) to make it behave like a trailing petunia and called it Friolina. Put two or three of these Friolinas into a hanging basket and you will be rewarded with an exploding fountain of hundreds of bright flowers throughout the winter. Another winter beauty is the Algerian iris, Iris

unguicularis. It’s a vigorous evergreen rhizomatous perennial that will grow to around 30cm in height. Although its dark green leaves can be rather dull and strappy, it produces deep violet fragrant and flamboyant late winter flowers, five to eight centimetres in width, each fall petal marked with white and deep yellow at its base. Another bonus is that this plant is not too fussy where it grows, as long as the soil is well drained. Primula is another lovely subject that modern breeders have had a good tinker with to give us a plethora of new colours, sizes and improved flowering. Unlike its modest native cousin that flowers only for a short time in spring, these loud boys in the band start their trumpeting from mid-autumn onwards. How could I talk about winter plants without mentioning the snowdrop? It arrives perfectly timed, just as you’re thinking that winter has gone on long enough. If you find that you are getting fewer flowers than last year, then it’s time to thin out the over-crowded clumps. Unlike most other bulbs, snowdrops can be lifted when they are still in full leaf and transplanted. Valerie Munro is a chartered horticulturist. Car review MERCEDES S63 L AMG

FEBRUARY REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

Excitement comes in various degrees, and it is almost impossible to rate and compare its content when it has been so gloriously plentiful for me over decades of privileged assignments in my job as a journalist. So, hopefully without being accused of being a namedropping egomaniac, I would like to pinpoint a few examples of my own experience, such as a series of one-to-one lunches with Hollywood megastar Paul Newman, six weeks on tour with The Beatles, a holiday with football genius George Best in Dubai, a week with Grand Prix hero Nigel Mansell and film star Gene Hackman in Arizona and a trip, first class, to Australia with my best pal, motor bike race genius Mike Hailwood. Add to them a flight on Concorde from Paris to New York, a trip to the USA on board Queen Mary 2 with an invitation by skipper Kevin Oprey to the Captain’s table for dinner, and sheer joy is an overtaking factor. And just when one could be thinking none of this could

26 Looklocal Magazine - February 2018

be matched, another treat to thrill blazes a trail across the imagination, and the build-up and anticipation invade your psyche with stark expectation. This time, a dream of a supercar, the finest example of elegance, poise, romance and sheer style, a Mercedes masterpiece, was centrepiece of an unforgettably luxurious stopover at the ultra-splendid Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni overlooking Lake Como and the spectacular mountain backdrop opposite it on the edge of the village of Bellagio. It was an invitation to celebrate at the scene of my marriage to Trophy Wife, with, firstly, a private jet to Nice where we were airlifted by helicopter onto the shipboard pad of our host’s yacht standing off Monaco. And to add to his surprise anniversary treat for us, he had laid on the loan of a superbly classy Mercedes S-Class, so I could mix the business of a review with the pleasure of a weekend at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and a lunch with F1 champ, Lewis Hamilton.

The coastline drive along the Riviera is a constant awakener, with its breathtaking views and the eventual winding, treacherously narrow road to the ltalian lakeside, with an ever-present threat of cars heading in the opposite direction and riskily cutting the corners. To do it in the likes of the S-Class, marvellously safe, with its sublime ride and reactive performance levels on both the brake and the accelerator pedals, plus the formidable solid size of the handsome Merc, largely removes any fears of coming off second-best in a wallop. The range-topper, the sixth generation of the S-Class, is the result of painstaking and astute planning by the brainy design boys, giving it a crucial mix of practicality and plushness par excellence to overshadow and cause anxiety among its rivals, such as the Cadillac CT6, Maserati Quattro Porto, BMW 7 and Lexus and Volvo in the exclusive luxury saloon class. Even the best Rolls Royces need to be wary… Since it became the first car in Europe to incorporate airbags and three-point seat belts, it has never paused in its pursuit of top rankings. There are even 64…yes sixty-four… colour settings for a sumptuous cabin with top hotel penthouse atmosphere. The extensively

spacious rear seats with leg room to rival any first-class jet plane, massage, warm and ventilate, with a relaxing recline halfway to horizontal. Loads of aluminium has been used to save weight and boost performance. Adaptive dampers tighten the suspension when necessary and there’s a system which sniffs out bumps and sets up the suspension automatically so that you don’t feel them. I could go on and on because the car’s infrastructure is a work of art and common sense in equal and vastly extensive measure. My Monaco-Milan venture in this dream transport for Trophy Wife and me will be a permanent reminder that Mercedes can never, ever be underestimated when the crucial element in style and efficiency in motion is a guarantee. I make no apologies f I appear to have gone over the top in what could be judged as an appraisal to stir the emotions of all of us car lovers. If I had a hundred grand or so to spare, a 2018 S-type would be my treat to myself. Specification: Model S63 L AMG. BHP 612. MPG 32. 0-62 in 4.3 seconds. Top speed 155mph. Price £125,690.

build refugee pre-school LOCAL RESIDENTS

MOUNTAINS OF LEBANON NOW HAS A BRAND NEW PRE-SCHOOL, GIVING QUALITY CARE TO 40 SYRIAN REFUGEE CHILDREN. High in the mountains of Lebanon, a local pastor was caring for a vulnerable and needy community. He had already opened a monthly health clinic staffed by volunteer doctors and nurses, where patients would often walk for 3 hours to wait in line to be seen. The area had experienced an increase in Syrian refugees and the community was anxious about local services. Education, or lack of it, was a major concern. One day, a Syrian family approached the pastor. They had 5 young children but no school. They were desperate to see their family receive an education. “Would you open a school in your home?” they asked. Their children had never been to school. The pastor and his wife prayed about it and opened up their home, using the resources they had, with a team of volunteers who were not trained teachers. They were trying their best in a tough

environment and wanted help to set up the school. Phil Hawkins and family returned in 2016 after a six-year stay in Brazil with Aprender, Bookham’s very own international education charity. Working with a local Brazilian education institute, Phil and local colleague Josebene constructed a new, innovative school improvement model that focuses on development of character strengths and relevant knowledge. Its aim is to help education organisations in developing countries give children an extra boost to their studies. Following successful results, the work branched out into Lebanon, aiding schools for refugees. Could their Latin American experience of cross-cultural education development help in this new context? Rachael Underwood, Aprender’s Early Years Consultant, and Phil Hawkins visited the school

in the Lebanese mountains in May 2017 and were struck by the potential they saw. The building had a good space, a great outdoor area, and, most importantly, folk that had a willingness to grab opportunities to reach their community and learn. The pastor explained the need and his dream to open a pre-school serving Syrian refugees. Rachael and Phil met on their return to the UK to dream and plan. Could they involve a local pre-school from Bookham? They approached Rainbow Play Group who kindly agreed to partner with them and they were soon in, filming the wonderful learning environment and lots of adult-child interactions which they could use in their training materials. They began to construct a new training sequence to help create not just a normal pre-school, but one that would be high quality, and specifically benefit the large numbers of traumatised children in the neighbourhood. As they talked, they felt a clear sense that not only did it need to be great, but it had to be replicable. Could they get across the essential early years DNA in a way that the local educators owned, valued and felt empowered to teach others? Through careful liaison with the pastor and the pre-school director, Rachael proposed three lots of three-day training across a 6 month period with evaluation and support as a foundational promise. As plans gathered pace, local friends and supporters came on-board and soon they had a bunch of folk helping and giving, as they felt the immense importance of what was about to happen. Rachael and Phil headed back to the mountains in Lebanon in November 2017 with suitcases filled with a huge variety of very simple learning support materials. Rachael led the training from Monday to Wednesday, and the team of teachers wrestled with how they were going to make this work in their culture. Because of a solid relational and crosscultural understanding, the team not only wanted to follow the proposed model but understood the ‘why’ - so important for sustainability. Phil said, “It was such an honour and privilege to see the new pre-

school open on the Thursday for 40 refugee children from ages 3 to 5. Seeing the team put into practice ideas that had only been explained 24 hours previously was simply amazing.” Rachael said, “It was really exciting seeing the children arriving and then seeing everyone so engaged and absorbed in what they were doing.” It was such a team effort. Aprender are so grateful for the support, practically and financially, that they received leading up to the trip. Bookham Baptist Church has been a key supporter for the last 7 years and continues to provide resources and prayer that are so welcome. Various groups that meet up in Bookham also made items to send and gave financially too. The ‘Babes on the Run’ fitness group had a pre-Christmas Family Charity Bootcamp on 23rd December, raising funds for Aprender and this pre-school project. Thanks, Kim and the team and everyone that came, burnt calories and had fun! Since returning to the UK, Rachael and Phil have become members of the pre-school’s WhatsApp group and are amazed to see the photos and videos that have been posted showing the transformation happening with the children and volunteers. Aprender continue to support and empower as we conduct the second training event in January 2018, evaluating what has been working and growing understanding of how we can improve. With a great team of volunteers on the ground, we are confident that the new pre-school will go from strength to strength. January is the time of thick snow in the mountains and few venture outside to play. Our hope is that we can help provide some new outdoor play equipment in time for the spring when the snow has gone and the children can play and explore their new emerging world. If you would like to know more or support this on-going partnership and donate to fund training and equipment, please visit Aprender’s website at www.aprender.co.uk and click the ‘Make A Donation’ button. You can also follow Aprender on Facebook and Twitter at aprenderuk. We would love to show Weybridge the results of its generosity, following our third visit in April 2018. By Phil Hawkins

Theatre returns PROFESSIONAL REPERTORY

TO LEATHERHEAD - WWW.LEATHERHEADTHEATRE,COM/LEATHERHEADREPSEASON

Seasonal rep will return to The Leatherhead Theatre after almost 30 years, with a series of three plays presented by professional theatre company Hordern Ciani. This exciting new initiative will be brought to the area by the team behind the hugely successful Swanage Rep. The brand new season for the community of Leatherhead and surrounding areas will see the company of nine actors perform across all three shows, rehearsing one play during the day whilst performing another at night. The Leatherhead season will feature ‘Yes, Prime Minister’, the stage version of the smash hit TV series by the original writers Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, ‘The Secret Garden’, a brand new musical adaptation by Dave Simpson based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and ‘Communicating Doors’ by hugely popular playwright Alan Ayckbourn. The Leatherhead Theatre is a 500 seater, Grade II listed building which originally opened as The Thorndike, a purpose-built rep theatre in 1969, named after Dame Sybil Thorndike. However, the last professional

repertory season to play there was in the late 1980s. Katherine Mount, Producer and co-founder of Leatherhead Rep said: “We are so excited to be bringing our rep season to this beautiful theatre, and feel extremely privileged to be working in a facility that was designed for, and was home to repertory theatre for so long. Regional theatres often overlook ‘traditional plays’ in their programming and we feel lucky to have been welcomed here with such open arms, and to be able to restore this wonderful tradition to the local community of Leatherhead. We hope everyone will come out in support of this and enable the theatre to thrive once again” Tickets for all three shows in the Spring rep season can be purchased from The Leatherhead Theatre box office on 01372 365141 or via their website w w w. t h e l e a t h e r h e a d t h e a t re . c o m / leatherheadrepseason. PANTS!

Coaching with Inspiration “Can I just check you mean trousers?” I asked. “Oh, no”, she told us “I meant underwear” It was during a creativity course I ran last year. We were reflecting on the many and various ways the course was changing us, some small and some significant. One of the participants, an American lady, said she’d realized that all her pants were black and boring and she’d gone and bought some brightly coloured pants. “Can I just check you mean trousers?” I asked. “Oh no”, she told us, “I meant underwear.” We all laughed. She’s lived in the UK long enough to adopt our vocabulary, but her accent remains delightfully American. And my assumption was wrong. Assumptions are easy to make. We hear things and our brains run off and create stories about what they mean. Sometimes, an assumption is just an innocent mistake. Sometimes, the assumption serves to make us feel good. But sometimes, assumptions can make us feel bad! A friend walks past us in the street; we assume she’s ignoring us and we feel hurt. Some friend she turned out to be!! It’s so much easier to check things out than to let hurt feelings fester: “You walked past me this afternoon; had I done something to upset you?” “No! I didn’t see you! I’d just had a row at work and I was upset!” We might even get the chance to support our friend and strengthen the relationship. We make assumptions about life all the time, based on what we see, hear or experience. If I hear people raving about a certain product, I might assume it must be good, even if it’s really rubbish! If I watch news stories throughout the day about violence and aggression, or soaps about hatred and deceit, I might assume the world is a frightening place where people can’t be trusted. If I assume that things always go wrong, that people never believe me or that life is

unfair, I probably won’t want to try new things or have close relationships. But if I focus on the many stories of kindness, cooperation, courage, generosity, and love that I come across, I will be more inclined to assume that people are basically good and can be trusted. I am more likely to share, support and explore. I will give the benefit of the doubt and forgive, rather than assume the worst. And I will believe that life is full of opportunities, and that anything is possible. Assumptions can lead to a distorted understanding of the world. They are not the truth. They are just stories we create based on what we’ve experienced in the past or what other people tell us. So take care who and what you choose to listen to. Ask yourself “How do I know it’s true?” And check things out ... or life could be pants!
