I hope you enjoyed a great break over the festive period and that your new year has started well. For me, it’s not been so great! I’ve had a nasty spell of flu which knocked me for six and I’m only now, starting to get back on my feet. I hope you have managed to avoid the inevitable New Year germs! On a positive note, isn’t is great to gradually see the lighter evenings returning? Our days will soon feel so much longer with Spring just around the corner. I’ve already seen daffodil bulbs sprouting from the soil; crazy seasons we have these days! Our February magazine brings a selection of interesting information for you, including a little competition to win a great CD! New artist Alice Merton has a great voice, I’m sure you’ll enjoy listening to her debut album! Good Luck! We were very excited recently when we received an invitation to join the judging panel at Denbies Wine Estate for their annual Art Competition; Michelle enjoyed her visit and was very impressed by the high quality of the entries. See how she got on inside. With spring just around the corner, it’s a perfect time to year to plan your garden for 2019! See our great feature from RHS Wisley and get your veg rotating! Wishing you all a great month and maybe even a little romance around the 14th! Until next time…. Adios Amigos!

WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.
tax computation (called an SA302), together with advice on what you need to do, by the end of November 2018. If you have received an amended SA302, you should carefully check the calculation before paying any balance due. If you have an accountant or tax adviser, please make sure you share the SA302 with them, as HMRC are not sending copies to agents. Please make sure you deal with the amended SA302 as quickly as possible. You either need to pay any balance due within 28 days or lodge an appeal within 30 days. If you don’t take swift action, HMRC may start charging interest on the balance outstanding.
Why is my tax bill so high? Tax Credit estimates
I submitted my Tax Credit forms with my estimated income for the year - I have now completed my tax return but do I need to tell Tax Credit Office? Yes, it will be necessary to call Tax Credit Office to inform them of your actual figures - and this needs to done by 31st January. Although your tax credits would continue if the January deadline is not met, the amount you receive from 6th April may not be accurate. This could mean that you have been overpaid and result in you having to pay back at a later date, with the possibility of also receiving a penalty.
Q. A.
Amended SA302
I have received an amended SA302 for 2016/17. What is it and what should I do with it? From 19th November 2018, HMRC will be reviewing and reworking up to 30,000 self assessment tax returns for 2016/17, where they believe there is a risk that their tax calculator has incorrectly calculated the tax liability. Please note, this only affects returns that were filed online and that were subject to a specific list of “exclusions”. A tax return may be excluded, which HMRC’s tax calculator is unable to compute a tax liability correctly. If your tax return is affected, HMRC will send you a new
Q. A.
I have just completed my tax return online for the first time and it says I owe £8,000 in tax this January. I had already estimated it would be in that region, so that wasn’t a surprise. However, it also calculated that I owed another £4,000 in January and another £4,000 in July for 2018/19. Is this right? The £8,000 you’re due to pay by the end of January is in respect of 2017/18. However, if you’re tax bill is in excess of £1,000 and you’ve paid less than 20% of your tax at source (for example through PAYE on your wages), then you will be expected to make Payments on Account. These are instalments for next year’s tax bill and are normally 50% of your current year’s bill. As you’ve said, the first one is paid in January and the second in July. Moving forward, they are designed to smooth your tax payments but in the first year, they can be quite a hit to the cashflow, as you will essentially be paying 1.5 times your tax bill this January. If you think your income and tax bill will be lower next year, you may opt to reduce your Payments on Account. If you reduce your Payments on Account too low, you’ll be charged interest. If they are too high, HMRC will of course refund you.

Gardening With Auntie Planty Green Fingers
I’m convinced that there is an unspoken language between plant and gardener, and even plant to plant. But proving this little theory of mine to you is going to be difficult. Have you ever wondered why some people have more success with plants than others? In this country we call these folk that are blessed with a gardening talent having green fingers. On the other side of the pond, Americans call them green thumbs. My reasoning doesn’t have to hang on your belief in magic, although it might help. I often tell the tale of the Irish farmer who, on finding a bird-planted hawthorn tree in the middle of a cornfield field will leave it there. He will go to great lengths to plough around it, leaving the tree undisturbed. Why? Because all self-respecting Irish farmers believe that the fairies live at the base of the tree and others who have evicted the plant have suffered extreme (and I mean extreme) bad luck. Some think that green fingers are an extension of a verdant heart, and that plants respond well only to gardeners who understand plants in a very real sense. However, there have been others who believe that love was the vital source of nourishment essential to plant raising. Someone in Dorset was living in a house with a fine
18 Looklocal Magazine - February 2019
and healthy willow in the front garden. They sold up and moved to another village closeby. After about eight years, they met the new owners in the street who asked them about what special food they had given the willow tree, as it was now suffering badly. Knowing that some willows like to be talked to, the original owners returned to have a chat with the ailing tree. After that, the willow revived, but it obviously needed more than one conversation. It later died. Surely this was a good example of a lonely tree pining for its lost love? So, if you’re asked to water your neighbour’s plants while they are away on a long holiday, especially if there is a willow tree in the garden, take heed. Even if you do little to love the other plants, do please pay special attention to the willow. Water it well, talk to it kindly, acknowledge that it could be pining for its holidaying gardeners and reassure it that Fred and Vera (whoever) will be back soon, otherwise expect the worst! Annual Art Competition at Denbies Wine Estate
Winner Jilly Butcher with Bridging the Gap Over the flowery dell by Janet Bryan
Memories of Grandma by Imogen Hartridge
Well, in our time we have been asked to judge vegetables, plants, dogs, hanging baskets, stalls at various village events, groups dressing to a theme, window displays etc! (thankfully never babies, way too much pressure!) So when we were asked to help judge the Denbies Annual Bacchus Art Competition-piece of cake! Not!! Such a high standard of entries and talent left me with the difficult task of deciding the winners. Thankfully I was not alone!! Upon arrival I was shown up to the gallery where I met our fellow judges (pictured), two of whom were last years winners. Debbie Green from Bookham who won the 2018 judges vote with her beautiful painting of the Northern Lights and Grace Ellen a Surrey based artist who won the 2018 People’s Choice with her inspiring landscape painting. After introductions and a cup of coffee it was down to business. So what do I know about art? Not a lot, but I know
20 Looklocal Magazine - February 2019
what I like!! It was not without a little apprehension that I went along to Denbies last month. The theme this year was “Bridging the Gap”, which could be interpreted in anyway the entrants chose. The judges spent time, separately (no collusion!!), studying the exhibits, choosing their favourites and scoring them accordingly. All the works were of an extremely high standard and with so many different styles, techniques and interpretations of the theme, this was no easy task. After a morning of deliberation we were invited to join Gill White of Denbies (and fellow judge) for lunch in the Gallery restaurant while our scoring was collated and the winners announced. It was particularly lovely to talk to our group over lunch, three of whom are regular judges for this event (Gill White, Graham Muncy & John Cawdell) and could relate their past experiences. Also, to sit with the two winners from last year and discuss the different
Denbies Wine Estate London Rd, Dorking RH5 6AA www,denbies.co.uk
techniques we had seen and the pros and cons of the different mediums used. It has certainly given me a much greater appreciation of art than I had before. I love art, but as I said, I don’t know much about it, but I know what I like. Now I am even more in awe of people who produce these amazing works of art than I was before. Debbie and Grace said they had found it very interesting being the judges for a change and that it has given them a better insight into how art is viewed. It was interesting when we collated our marks with the lovely Tiana from the events team, to discover that we had mostly all selected the same pieces in our top ten. No dissent amongst the judges then!! So whatever our individual thoughts and reasons for choosing particular pieces it was a very fair result across the board. The overall winner of 2019 Bacchus Art Competition was Bookham based Jilly Butcher (pictured) with her amazing photograph of a spider and it’s web - “Bridging
the Gap”! Runners up: in second place was “Over the flowery dell” by Janet Bryan, an intricate piece in applied fabric, painted and stitched, and third place went to Imogen Hartridge “Memories of Grandma” an emotive oil painting. Well done to all the entrants. From someone who struggles to draw a stick man, your abilities will forever remain a mystery to me!! My thanks go to you, my fellow judges and Denbies for your invitation and hospitality. It was an immensely enjoyable and memorable day. If you would like to enter the Denbies Bacchus Art Competition 2020, the Theme is “On The Edge” and details of how to enter can be found on the Denbies website: www.denbies.co.uk Denbies Art Gallery is always open and worth a visit. There are art displays and exhibitions throughout the year.

Alice Merton Releases Anticipated Debut Album
‘MINT’ Out 18th Jan 2019
The Berlin-based, British singer songwriter Alice Merton gets ready to release her much anticipated debut album MINT, which includes the singles ’Lash Out’, ’Why So Serious’, ’Funny Business’ and the platinum selling ‘No Roots’, on 18th January 2019. After garnering much attention with the explosive self-release of her debut single 'No Roots', Alice Merton has gone on to build a strong international fanbase, reaching 250M streams and 150M YouTube views so far, with ‘No Roots’ certified Platinum in 7 countries, reaching the Top 10 single charts in 10 countries and recently going GOLD in the US. MINT stands as a testament to Alice’s autobiographical and heartfelt writing, with driving rhythms underpinning catchy choruses and themes of female empowerment and unavoidable insecurities of youth, and her sense of independence; illustrated by the fact that, as well writing and recording the album herself, Alice set up her own label with her manager to release the record, and has produced a series selfdirected music videos as part of the campaign. In the US, partnering with label Mom + Pop Records, Alice has continued to build on the success of ‘No Roots’, touring with the likes of Vance Joy and The Killers, featuring in Billboard Magazine and
performing on both Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight’s Show and James Corden's The Late Late Show, as well as receiving a nomination in the 'Best Rock' category at the Teens Choice Awards. Closer to home, Alice has played sold out tours in the UK, featured on Tom Odell's latest single 'Half As Good As You', with radio support from Annie Mac and the Matt & Molly Show on Radio One and Radio 2, as well as coverage from MTV, Nylon, 1883 Mag and others. Jeep Renegade February Car Review
Jeepers-Creepers! Here we go with a distinct new and updated challenger in the bustling small SUV Crossover segment - the retro-styled eye-catcher, the Jeep Renegade. It has all the makings of a surefire success. After a costly setback in sales a couple of years ago, when numbers collapsed, the Jeep, painstakingly cared for and re-designed behind the scenes has come into full flow with a flair to frighten the rival front runners in an over-crowded market. It’s bid to overtake in the off-and-on-road market of the weenier and firmly established challengers is now solidly underway with a neat and tidy effort produced in Italy as a dramatic change from it’s historic American upbringing and pedigree. Indeed, the first all new Jeep for almost a decade - the first built outside the USA,

a clever and astute collaboration of US and European designers and engineers. Their radical thinking and painstaking concerns as to the public’s interest is superbly reflected in the new Renegade, a masterpiece of economy, good sense, comfort and a worthwhile reward for a buyer with a bargain £18,740 to spare for the starter model. After shifting the Jeep design and manufacture from the USA to Melfi in Italy, to arrest the dramatic decline in sales, the Fiat/Chrysler overlords have hit a new chapter in the success story - and it looks all set to run and run. It will most assuredly put on their guard, the established likes of the hot rivals Mini Countryman Renault Captur. By Ted Macauley

RHS Calls for Wartime Veg Plot Photos The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is calling on people to submit photos of their wartime vegetable gardens as it gets ready to mark 80 years since the outbreak of World War II and the Dig for Victory campaign. The charity will display advisory material and wartime propaganda that inspired people to grow more food to supplement ration-book diets at its library and gardens in the autumn and will include photos of families’ own gardens and allotments. The RHS began working with the Ministry of Agriculture on the Dig for Victory campaign at the point at which war broke out in 1939, having already begun making detailed plans in preparation for war in
1938. Advice was distributed via pamphlets, leaflets and exhibition packs that toured towns and villages across the country and included guides to cultivating
vegetables all year round, the storing of produce and making a compost heap. With wartime shortages gardeners had to show a great deal of ingenuity, creating vegetable plots in unlikely places. Employees at the Wolsey Motors in Birmingham made cloches out of scrap car windscreens for their workplace allotment. By 1943 it was estimated that around 55% of households were growing fruit and vegetables and their efforts made an important contribution to the nation’s health. Fiona Davison, Head of Libraries and Collections at the Royal Horticultural Society, said: “RHS information and advice helped get a nation growing at a time when food supplies were at an historic low. Many are likely to recall parents and relatives turning previously unloved plots into efficient and prolific green spaces. We’re asking the public to share those pictures and memories with us so we can celebrate the contribution of gardening to our wartime history.” Photos and additional information for the Dig for Victory exhibit should be sent to libraryenquirieslondon@rhs.org.uk. Dig for Victory will be on display at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon, RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex and RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire from 14th October – 17th November. Inspiration! That’s just the way it is It’s a bit embarrassing to admit that I didn’t know how to do up my new furry-lined jogging pants. Some things are obvious, right? You shouldn’t need a degree in getting dressed to figure out that if you’re doing up trousers with a tie-waist, you need to hold the left cord with the left hand, the right cord with the right hand, pull them towards each other and make your knot. Except that the ends of these cords were so short and there was so much resistance from within the waistband that I could barely pull one end over the other. I just decided they were a stupid design and put up with them being loose around my waist because they were the cosiest trousers I’d ever possessed. Nothing’s perfect.
everything else: I was right – people do always let me down! If we believe good things don’t happen to us, then when something looks like it might go wrong, we’ll give up without really trying: I knew it wouldn’t work! Do you ever put up with things … people … circumstances …? It’s so easy to make judgements, to assume That’s just the way things are / he is / they do things around here, and end up with situations that wear us down. It’s easy to rationalize that It doesn’t really matter / It’s not a big deal / There’s no point in bringing it up. But if we avoid looking into things that aren’t working in our lives and sorting them out, we could be filling our lives with niggling discontents unnecessarily.
One day, when I inadvertently pulled the cords in the wrong direction, away from each other, I realized that they had each just grown from a stubbly inch to around ten inches! With all that cord out of the waistband, the resistance had gone and I could easily tie the ends together. My cosy jogging pants were now perfect.
What are you putting up with in your life? And what would it be like if you could work it out?
Clearly, the potential of my trousers to co-operate with me had always been there. I had just made some unhelpful assumptions: • They were stupid (yes, classic pot calling the kettle black) • “That’s just the way it is” (so there was no point trying to do something about it) • I had better things to do with my time than try to sort out such a trivial problem (it was easier to put up with it and have the occasional moan, than to tackle it).
+ CPCC ACC +
We often make assumptions that fit into our expectations about life. If we expect to be let down, we’ll notice anything that disappoints us and ignore
